Del Walmsley challenges the self-help-book thinking that plagued the 50s, 60s, and 70s, and has come back in a new form today: look the part and you'll get what you want. You see, as much today as back then, Del purged this type of thinking and replaced it with something else: what do I need to do to get what I want? The result was financial freedom. “Your unhappiness cannot be blamed on your past or your environment. And it isn't that you lack competence. You just lack courage. One might say you are lacking in the courage to be happy.” Welcome back to another episode of Made You Think! This week, we're diving into The Courage to Be Disliked by Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga. This book is full of wisdom, challenging you to free yourself from the expectations placed on you by others so you can achieve happiness. We cover a wide range of topics including: Pledging loyalty to yourself How "Insta-therapy" can be simultaneously hurtful and helpful When not to give unsolicited advice Are all problems interpersonal problems? Having the courage to follow through on your ideas And much more. Please enjoy, and make sure to follow Nat, Neil, and Adil on Twitter and share your thoughts on the episode. Written by two Japanese authors, the book is a conversation between a German philosopher and a young man teaching that the past doesn't control you, as you have ownership over your life and your actions. (7:16) Insta-therapy; social media posts all about therapy and unpacking trauma. While it can be helpful and informational, there can be some downside to it, too. When it comes to therapy, there's a difference between unpacking your life and taking action on it. (12:29) The book talks about lifestyles and how it's something that we can choose at any point in our life. (15:17) Everything you experience is in context of other people. Separation of tasks: Don't try to do somebody's tasks for them. "A parent suffering over the relationship with his or her child will tend to think, 'My child is my life.' In other words, the parent is taking on the child's task as his or her own, and is no longer able to think about anything but the child. When at last the parent notices it, the ‘I' is already gone from his or her life. However, no matter how much of the burden of the child's task one carries, the child is still an independent individual." (23:23) Unsolicited feedback. You can usually tell if someone's feedback is sincere or if it's for their own benefit. (29:54) Vegan diet vs. standard American diet, and how elimination diets are a way to see how your body reacts and what you're sensitive to. (34:15) Once we took lead out of gasoline, violent crime rates and other factors went down tremendously. The "Spoonie" community. (40:46) When you identify with a group, you may tend to believe in all related ideas or beliefs in order to stay a part of that group, even if the ideas are questionable. (42:54) The way the book frames ambition and how you shouldn't be seeking recognition. By being ambitious, you can contribute to more people. (45:27) Nat, Neil, and Adil discuss the title of the book and their interpretations of it. It's impossible to get everyone like you. If you aren't disliked, you're restricting your behavior to receive a more favorable outcome, but are you really free? (51:34) Pledging loyalty to yourself and recognizing that you can't please everybody. (54:14) When you think you can't do something, it's often because you lack the courage to follow through on it. You can't fail if you don't start, and that can prevent you from taking action. (56:34) That wraps up this episode! Today on episode 55 I'm honored to welcome Darrow Kirkpatrick, former engineer, climber, investor, author, and the creator of the popular blog CanIRetireYet.com. Darrow began serious saving and investing in his mid-30s and retired at age 50 in 2011 from a career in software engineering. In this wide-ranging interview, we explore why Darrow stepped away from personal finance writing after creating a popular blog, his adventures on the Colorado Trail and the inspiration for a memoir, and the journey and struggle to finding meaning and purpose at any stage in life. Darrow Kirkpatrick: An IntroductionDarrow was eager to share the methods and values of frugality and simple personal finance in the early days of his retirement, leading to the creation of his blog. Over time, though, his interest in the subject slowly waned, replaced by the need for more adventure. He partnered with Chris Mamula, eventually releasing the reigns of the blog to Chris. In the intervening years, Darrow has spent considerable time in contemplation of purpose and meaning in retirement, an often under-discussed and potentially difficult reality. This spiritual journey ultimately led him to pursue a boyhood dream of hiking the Colorado Trail. To achieve this lofty goal, he faced mental and physical hurdles, including walking the length of the trail with forearm crutches. Darrow has been busy writing a memoir of that experience, titled Rain and Fire in the Sky: Beyond Doubt on the Colorado Trail. Additionally, he has created a new website dedicated to cataloguing and reviewing other trail memoirs, at trailmemoir.com, where you can keep up with the latest on his upcoming book. This interview offers a unique perspective on the softer side of financial optimization. We can be masters of technical methods of saving and investing, but ultimately none of that matters without clear direction, purpose, and meaning in our lives. As a retiree of twelve years and counting, Darrow has plenty of lessons for us all. Topics Discussed with Darrow Kirkpatrick:Darrow's climbing life: early free climbing and first ascentsDarrow's career: becoming a software engineer and working remotely, long before either of these career options were commonplaceFinding a path to financial independence in a time before widespread bloggingDarrow's key philosophy and methods to achieving financial independenceWhy Darrow sold CanIRetireYet.com to Chris MamulaFinding meaning and purpose in retirement and deciding to hike the Colorado TrailDarrow's physical and mental hurdles in life and on the trail, and specific methods to address these struggles. How Darrow leveraged financial strength to take a mid-career break for struggles with anxietyReflections on trail life, solitude in the wilderness, and writing a memoir of that experienceBalancing life on the road and a home lifeSocial connections for retirees and for those relocating to new townsMessaging early retirement in social situationsSo much more! The O'Leary Review Podcast Guest: Hartmuth Pelger December 1, 2022 Recently, we got a chance to sit down—virtually, of course, because I'm in California and he's in Austria—with Hartmuth Pelger. Hartmuth is a multilingual business executive with more than 25 years of experience managing a wide range of financial functions, from analysis to auditing. Currently, he is a CFO in the e-Mobility sector. Hartmuth lives in Austria but has also lived in 8 countries across three continents during his well-traveled life. More importantly, Hartmuth started a parallel career in business coaching for high-performing individuals. Tom Woods 100 One of the goals of this program is to get at least 100 people within the Tom Woods orbit on the podcast. “Tom's orbit” is loosely defined, but in our case, Hartmuth is number 8. Ninety-two to go! #TomWoods100 Book mentioned Tomorrow's Gold: Asia's age of discovery by Marc Faber Influences The Peter Schiff Show — where Tom Woods developed some of his radio/podcasting chops as a guest host for Peter. The Mises Institute — The Mises Institute exists to promote teaching and research in the Austrian school of economics, and individual freedom, honest history, and international peace, in the tradition of Ludwig von Mises and Murray N. Rothbard. Founded in 1982 by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr. Hans-Hermann Hoppe — an Austrian School economist and libertarian/anarcho-capitalist philosopher, is Professor Emeritus of Economics at UNLV, Distinguished Senior Fellow with the Mises Institute, founder and president of The Property and Freedom Society, former editor of the Journal of Libertarian Studies, and a lifetime member of the Royal Horticultural Society. He is married to economist Dr. A. Gulcin Imre Hoppe and resides with his wife in Istanbul. Digging through the archives, we found the debut episode of the Tom Woods Show which Hartmuth mentions. Ethnic Germans in Romania The Wikipedia entry – Germans of Romania A New York Times article (behind paywall), “Ethnic Germans in Romania Dwindle” A fascinating 8+ minute video on The Exodus of Romania's German-speaking Minority. More Romanian history Who was Nicolae Ceaușescu? The Wikipedia on Romania's brutal and hated dictator. Romania in World War II. The Wikipedia on the interesting history, from its near alliance with Nazi Germany to its ultimate flip to the Communist side. The e-Mobility Sector Hartmuth works in the off-highway sector within e-mobility. Some manufacturers are now focused on not only alternative fuels, but alternative ways to power machinery in general. The specific application of a fully-electric drive concept is key to knowing if it will make economic sense. For instance, Hartmuth is working on mining and agricultural application, and an important aspect of a firm's decision on whether to go fully-electric or not is the amount of pollution—or lack thereof—that will be produced on-site. Very interesting. Armageddon (1998) How much better would Harry Stamper (Bruce Willis) and his roughneck pals have felt if they had Hartmuth's e-mobility concept working for them on that comet? Assuming they had diesel-powered rigs, they need oxygen to burn the fuel. Does a comet have all that much oxygen available? Since we love Bruce Willis—and most of his movies—we will eventually get to Die Hard later in the holiday season, but we did stumble upon one potential plot hole in the Christmas thriller…or was there ever one? The sovereignty of Hong Kong Wikipedia's breakdown of what happened when the UK handed it over to the Red Chinese. Dubai Wikipedia. Sorry about all the Wikipedia links, but they are pretty good and if you are on your best internet behavior, you'll learn a lot. However, we tend to go down the proverbial worm-hole of Wikipedia from time to time. That's also fun on occasion, but tends to grind down available time in the day. Enjoy the links at your own risk. I haven't finished the video yet as I type this… Hitchhiking I was blown away when Hartmuth told me he hitchhiked in the western US and Canada in the 1990s. I grew up with the notion that hitchhiking was a serious no-no—both to try and get rides or to give rides to potential riders. The days of Me and Bobby McGee were more romantic and innocent, I guess. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IOoMREvsV9E There's a guy I found on the web called Nomadic Matt and he tells you 14 Ways to Safely Hitchhike Across the United States. Read at your own speed or interest level. I'm just leaving it here…I have no interest in hitchhiking anywhere—I am still a child of my parents. Place in Canada mentioned: Prince George, British Columbia How do you contact Hartmuth? You can either contact me or go to his LinkedIn: Hartmuth Pelger. Austria Final Wikipedia entry of today's show notes: Austria. Interesting story of mine somewhat related to Austria—I've never been to continental Europe—in my travels… I was in Japan a few years back and at a coffee shop of sorts for a breakfast. The selection of non-Japanese foods in most places is often quite strange. The desire to imitate Europe or America is strong, but the implementation is often rather weak—save Kentucky Fried Chicken, but that's a subject for an entire newsletter or podcast series on its own. So, craving a typical American breakfast sandwich or something similar, I ordered a “Viennese Sausage.” Never had that before. Figured it was something even more exotic than regular sausage. Wrong. It was a hot dog on a hot dog bun. Served with a packet of ketchup and a packet of mustard. I was very confused and rather irritated until it dawned on me that I had seen Vienna Sausages in the store, usually canned and next to the SPAM. But also that I was eating a “wiener” and that…duh!...Vienna is the anglicized name for the Austrian capital city of Wien, thus wiener. See also: frankfurter, hamburger, etc. for other such examples. I don't think cheeseburger works in this scenario…but I could be mistaken. Long story short: the coffee was good, the hot dog was nothing special and we had great Japanese food most of the other meals we sat down for. As my good friend once said, “When in Greece…” Final book mentioned How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World by Harry Browne. The aforementioned Tom Woods talks about this book in 2017. Highly recommended speech—about a half-hour.
I talk a lot about the moral and ethical illegitimacy of government. But as it now stands, we're stuck with it. So, how do we live free in this unfree world? I talk about it with Tricia Stuart-Mann. We discuss strategies to live more freely, including agorism. Tricia is an anarchist, a Christian and a content creator. Among her many projects, she is the host of the GingerArchy podcast.
Are you free? It seems like a simple question, but the answer isn't always obvious. Most people live with the illusion of freedom. They have a stable job, nice house, and if they're lucky, 2-4 weeks vacation. But is that really freedom? This question is one that today's guest has dedicated his life to answering. I'm talking with Kevin Koskella—lifelong adventurer, free-thinker, entrepreneur, and author of The Rebel's Guide to Freedom. Kevin used to feel stuck in the corporate world, slaving away for money and repeating the same day for weeks, months, and even years on end. But when he lost his job during the dot.com crash, he decided that he would never go back to that life. In this episode, he shares his story from being laid off to starting a lucrative online business, his approach to investing in crypto, and the importance of designing a life on your terms and following your definition of success. Free Gift He's giving you free access to the Freedom Quiz. How free are you in your life? What areas are potential blind spots? Is there any low-hanging fruit? Kevin's quiz will provide an analysis of how to build more freedom. To get access to this gift, visit JustinDonald.com/95 Want the Full Show Notes? Is there a link between good beer and a successful economy? In this episode of the IEA Podcast, IEA Head of Political Economy Dr Kristian Niemietz sat down with host Kieran Neild-Ali and reviewed the book 'Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World' over a pint. The book details two economists, Benjamin Powell and Robert Lawson, who travel the world, sampling food and drink in countries with an historical or cultural link to socialism or communist regimes. We were a little drained recording this one after a big week of some unpleasant but necessary learning experiences in navigating being free in an unfree world. So many questions...how do we navigate different values and beliefs between our unschooling/deschooling world and the dominant culture? How do we meet others that may be bound by old beliefs? What is the responsibility we adults/parents hold in supporting our kids to navigate these worlds as we are all working hard to bridge the gaps and create more togetherness and connection in this world? How do we navigate our multicultural (unschooling and schoolish) experiences? It may not be the most upbeat episode but we start to dive into it all here.
Today's High Performance Human podcast guest is David DiFrancesco. David teaches average human beings to become Living Warriors by helping them to 'live fearfully'. By recognising that life is an inherent unknown, and knowing that we will feel uncomfortable at times, rather than avoiding feeling vulnerable we can develop the strength of resilience and a knowing confidence that we can handle what comes our way. David has learned this from Russian, Israeli, and US special forces soldiers who have the fitness and mindset of elite athletes. Thus, the lessons that he shares in this conversation can equally be applied in your life or in your pursuit of athletic goals. Topics covered include: Why the most physically prepared soldiers often fail the special forces selection process Fear - recognising that it exists and how to deal with the fear of failure and fear of success Appreciating that sharing vulnerability builds resilience Healing stories about yourself Developing the ability to experience and live in the unknown Learning to do what we are NOT good at Dealing with change when it is forced upon us To follow David, please use the following social media links: Website www.terrainfunctionalfitness.com Email David if you have specific questions thelivingwarrior@gmail.com Warrior Workout Youtube channel LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daviddifrancesco/ Some other cool links to check out: Thomas DeLauer Nutrition - How to time coffee/caffeine for best results 8 Stretches you need to do Better Ideas by Joey Schweitzer Atomic Habits Summary David particularly liked this book: Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway by Dr. Susan Jeffers 'How I Found Freedom in an Unfree World' by Harry Browne Join our SWAT/High Performance Human tribe now, with a happiness guarantee! It's not generally in my nature to heap praise upon a place with a 53% tax rate, a 25% VAT, or one of the top ten highest tax burdens in the world. But as I often remark, nearly every place in the world has something great going for it… some unique competitive advantages that set it apart from its peers, balanced against a multitude of disadvantages. Iran is a great example; it suffers from long-term economic decay, constant sanctions, and an authoritarian government. Its disadvantages are numerous. But at the same time the country is an archaeological dream, full of well-preserved ruins from civilizations so old that they were studied by ancient Greek scholars. This is a unique advantage. And for a few people, that sole advantage may outweigh Iran's numerous disadvantages. After all, everyone has his/her own particular set of priorities. Another example: earlier this year when my wife and I were planning out the birth of our child, we chose to have the baby in Mexico. It was a deliberate decision made after careful consideration of our priorities. We wanted extremely high quality and personalized care from physicians, midwives, etc. who would be available to us around the clock. And I didn't want COVID restrictions factoring into the birth at all. I wasn't going to risk being in a place where local rules or hospital policy would have forced my wife to wear a mask during labor… or to keep me out of the delivery room. We very rationally laid out our priorities. And after some research and investigation, we landed on Cancun. For us, it was an incredible decision. Cancun, and Mexico in general, are far from perfect; there are certainly plenty of disadvantages. But for my particular priorities at that moment in time, it was absolutely the right place for me. And that leads me to Sweden. There are plenty of disadvantages. High taxes. High cost of living. Cold weather and lack of sunshine. But for some people those problems might be outweighed by Sweden's long-standing COVID freedom. To this day there are still countless cities, towns, states, and provinces around the world that continue to restrict freedom. They've created first and second class citizenships based solely on someone's vaccine status. It doesn't matter if an individual has a severe medical condition-- like an autoimmune disorder, for which the FDA itself states, “no data are currently available on the safety of COVID-19 vaccines for people with autoimmune conditions.” Yet if someone, under advice of their physician, chooses to delay being vaccinated until more data is available for their particular condition, they can be denied basic freedoms, including being a functioning member of society, or potentially having a job. On the other hand, a registered sex offender with a bad case of tuberculosis is welcome with open arms. Politicians and policymakers have also waffled on mask mandates, school openings, and more. Sweden has famously taken a completely different approach during the pandemic-- one that they have been constantly derided for in the woke media. But Sweden's generally light touch with COVID has proven to be quite effective; they did not suffer the economic devastation. And more importantly they did not suffer the mental health devastation. Sweden has not dehumanized its population… nor cultivated a mentality where people view others as filthy, disease-infested vermin rather than friends and neighbors. And yet their COVID track record is just as good, if not better, than its peers in North America and Western Europe. Again, Sweden is not without its challenges and silly rules. But we thought it was worth investigating further… so I asked our CEO Viktorija to spend some time there are report on her findings. She tells us all about it in today's podcast; you can listen in here.
Not long ago, we stumbled upon a blog post by Jonathan Fields called “Embrace the Thrash.” In it, Jonathan discusses the stressful challenges of building anything new. We loved it, especially the word “thrash.” It really describes what almost everyone encounters when starting something from scratch. It's hard to describe, but you feel it and you know it's for real. In this new podcast, Dave Jenks discusses this “thrash” post and what he has done to help get through tension-filled times. He shares the mindset and the pragmatic techniques that minimize the stress and maximize the success. In the end, he shares the four classic books that have guided him and why they are so helpful. There is a disturbing trend of politicians and their enablers trying to make socialism cool again. Larry White gives it a fitting label — “Murder Chic.”First came the “communist party” shirts — a clever-enough cartoon depicting Stalin, Lenin, Marx, Castro, and Mao having a rowdy time. Then those hideous fur hats came into vogue. But perhaps most unsettling is Kristen Ghodsee's new book, Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism, which has the truly Orwellian subtitle, “And Other Arguments for Economic Independence.”Let that sink in for a second…Luckily, few are falling for the propaganda.Ghodsee's book sales are in the basement (#432,614 in Books and #776 in Communism & Socialism alone), while Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World is already ranked #1 among new releases in the “Beers” category; 38,000th (and climbing) overall — a full week before the release! The book is a hilarious new broadside by the The Independent Institute's Ben Powell and his co-author Robert Lawson.“In Cuba… the central planners decided they only need two kinds [of beer]… Both taste like Budweiser that's been left out in the sun.”Powell and Lawson know that academic arguments did not cause the fall of the Berlin Wall. Rather, it was the superiority of goods and services available in West Berlin that forced the Soviet tyrants to let their people go… shopping. The book demonstrates this with flair—comparing the swill from former Soviet-bloc countries to the diverse and alluring brews of the free world. What better way to dismantle the new wave of socialist propaganda than to launch Socialism Sucks to the top of the Amazon best-seller rankings before its launch?Ben Powell returns to the show this Sunday to share his journey “drinking his way through the unfree world.”Want to annoy a commie?A good buzz may be the most effective form of persuasion out there.Help set Ben and Bob's book to #1 in the Communism in Socialism category. There are many different routes to financial independence. In past episodes I've interviewed people who have achieved financial independence through extreme saving as a salaried employee. My own route was through entrepreneurship—growing and selling a business. Whichever route you take, you need a strategy to address common challenges. There are three core questions that your plan needs to address: How do you plan to make good money? How do you plan to save a huge amount of what you make? How do you plan to invest what you have saved? In this episode I suggest important things to consider for each of these three components of your plan. As always with money topics, you will need to do your own research. I'm not a financial advisor.
