In this episode, host Lina Apsheva talks to Benjamin Powell, head of sustainability in Fixed Income at SEB and Madeleine Moe from SSA origination at SEB, about the sovereign, supranationals, and agencies (SSA) segment and how these actors work with sustainable finance. They discuss examples of SSAs, types of sustainable finance products they engage with, and how this financing is used to support sustainable development across the world.
When newly elected President of Argentina Javier Milei described his anarcho-capitalist position, he referenced economist Bob Murphy's Chaos Theory. So I asked Bob to come on the show and explain to everyone what anarcho capitalism IS.We cover a lot of ground in this one, discussing how a society could operate with privatized justice, law enforcement, and even defense, and taking on all of the usual objections, from the control of nuclear weaponry to preventing new states from arising. Bob even answers the age-old question: Why should anarcho capitalists move to Somalia?Prepare to have your perceptions of governance and societal organization challenged.Bob Murphy is a renowned Austrian economist. His podcast is The Bob Murphy Show, and he is on Twitter. His essays on anarcho-capitalist principles, "Chaos Theory", can be found here and here. He also speaks about anarcho capitalism here and here.Hayek's "Law, Legislation, and Liberty" is here. And the article by Benjamin Powell, "Somalia After State Collapse: Chaos or Improvement?" can be found here.
On this podcast I discuss the book Socialism Sucks, Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World, by Robert Lawson and Benjamin Powell. Travel to failed socialist states and learn valuable lessons.

The story was subsequently produced on Suspense" on May 3, 1945. + There is a picture hanging on a wall, you look at it casually an extraordinary picture you'll say skilfully done, look at those fine brush stokes those superb colors but isn't the subject matter a little bizarre? It is something more than just bizarre, but let us begin from the beginning with the death of Benjamin Powell a rich and strange man. There were dark rumors about the Powell's, his wife had died many years ago, no one knows how. But Benjamin Powell had a daughter Julia a high-strung and neurotic girl and many wondered about her too. Benjamin Powell died and made Julia heir to a considerable fortune on certain condition. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/waldina/message
Images of illegal crossings are disturbingly chaotic and make it clear that there is indeed an immigration crisis. People perceive that chaos means we need government to exercise even more control, even when government is to blame for the chaos (as in the case of immigration). And so we get the vicious cycle that ends with our broken immigration system.Alex Nowrasteh, the director of economic and social policy studies at the Cato Institute, returns to the show Sunday to lay out pragmatic solutions for alleviating the chaos at the border. It starts with simplifying the system, and allowing more opportunities for immigrants to live and work here legally.Alex is the director of economic and social policy studies. His popular publications have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Washington Post, and most other major publications in the United States. He is the coauthor (with Benjamin Powell) of the book Wretched Refuse? The Political Economy of Immigration and Institutions (Cambridge University Press, 2020), which is the first book on how economic institutions in receiving countries adjust to immigration. He is also the coauthor (with Mark S. Krikorian) of the booklet Open Immigration: Yea and Nay (Encounter Broadsides, 2014) and has contributed numerous book chapters about immigration to various edited volumes. Our own immigration series “Let Them All In” has answered 5 of the main populist objections to open immigration. The series will conclude with an essay on policy solutions - the topic for our show this week.

https://youtu.be/fmh1JeGAVP0 Here's why: almost a hundred years ago, the Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises explained that socialism, even if run by benevolent despots and populated with workers willing to work for the common good, could still not match capitalism's performance. Socialism requires abolishing private property in the means of production. But private property is necessary to have the free exchange of labor, capital, and goods that establish proper prices. Without proper prices, socialist planners could not know which consumer goods were needed or how best to produce them....Socialism also gives tremendous power to government officials and bureaucrats who are the system's planners—and with that power comes corruption, abuse, and tyranny. It is no accident that the worst democides of the twentieth century occurred in socialist countries like the Soviet Union, Communist China, and Nazi (National Socialist) Germany, where planners simply decided to eliminate populations they thought interfered with their plans. - Robert Lawson and Benjamin Powell, Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World Dr. Ben Powell is the Executive Director of the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University and a Professor of Economics in the Rawls College of Business and a Senior Fellow with the Independent Institute. Economists almost universally agree that immigration provides net benefits to the countries that allows it, yet the public stubbornly clings to myths about immigrants "taking our jobs," or otherwise reducing natives' welfare. Benjamin Powell compiled the best scholarly economics research on immigration, gathered by multiple experts in the field, to write the conclusive book on the subject: The Economics of Immigration: Market-Based Approaches, Social Science, and Public Policy (2015).Since then, he collaborated with frequent guest and Cato scholar Alex Nowrasteh in revisiting the subject in the book *[Wretched Refuse? The Political Economy of Immigration and Institutions](https://www.amazon.com/Wretched-Refuse-Political-Immigration-Institutions/dp/1108702457).*Both books mix rigorous scientific analysis from the field of economics with clear explanations of how various studies should inform public policy. **Powell joined me to narrow the gap between public perception and economic reality when it comes to the vital issue.

While Biden's idea of a solution includes cash payments to would-be immigrants to get them to stay in their home countries, Alex has a better plan that also doesn't cost nearly as much: "Encourage free trade, end the drug war, and liberalize immigration," he says.Of course, the President is not entirely to blame for 150 years of bad immigration law - ultimately it's up to Congress to replace the patchwork of executive orders with a rational framework and plan for naturalizing future American immigrants, while disincentivizing dangerous illegal crossings.Wretched Refuse?Alex Nowrasteh - my go-to immigration expert - returns to the show to unpack the root causes of this chaos, and offer practical solutions that don't put the blame on those seeking a better life in America.I was eager to discuss Alex's new book, co-authored with Benjamin Powell, Wretched Refuse? The Political Economy of Immigration and Institutions (Cambridge University Press, 2020). We grappled with the political problem of immigration reform, along with the misconceptions underlying nativist hostility to more open immigration.
A largely unexplored counterargument to immigration liberalization is that immigrants who come from countries with worse institutions will make the institutions in their destination country worse. In Wretched Refuse? The Political Economy of Immigration and Institutions, Alex Nowrasteh and Benjamin Powell respond to this argument and today we have Alex on the show to elaborate on their findings. Our conversation begins with a discussion on the foundational piece by Michael Clemens, ‘Trillion-Dollar Bills on the Sidewalk'. This paper finds that the marginal immigrant to the United States from a developing country can expect a fourfold increase in their wages, and the result of a global, free migration policy would be to increase global GDP by about 50% to 150%. Alex then unpacks why immigrating would be the most efficient option for improving an immigrant's life. He responds to the arguments that immigrants should improve their home countries rather than immigrate and that the home countries of immigrants will worsen thanks to ‘brain drain'. Later in our conversation, Alex addresses the deep roots theory which proposes that the ancestry metrics of societies influence their GDP per capita. He then weighs in on whether culture impacts economic production. We hear about the central finding of Wretched Refuse, which is that immigrants don't worsen economic institutions in places where they go and in some cases improve them. Wrapping up, Alex shares his perspectives on changing immigration visa laws in the US and what the next ten years might hold in that respect. Tune in today! Key Points From This Episode: • The argument that immigration does not destroy the institutions responsible for prosperity in the modern world to be found in Alex's book. • Why immigrants from Yemen will 16X their salary after moving to the US. • Alex's response to the ‘Why don't immigrants fix their home country rather?' argument. • The question of brain drain when immigrants leave their home countries and why matters are more complex than this. • Why the overall economic gains immigrants offer to the US outweigh the threat they pose to some salaries. • Why Alex is a skeptic when it comes to the deep roots argument for prosperity. • Perspectives on the many reasons for why economic status of a country can change. • The impacts of culture and trust on economic growth and whether immigrants erode this. • Examples of mass immigrations to countries with poor institutions that experienced massive economic reforms in a liberalizing direction as a result. • Alex's thoughts on shifting H1B visa allocation from a lottery to a wage-based system. • How the heartland visa system might encourage higher rates of legal immigration. • What Alex thinks will happen around immigration liberalization in the next 10 years. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- After the fall of the Soviet Union, I thought everybody would realize that socialism brings misery. But no, “intellectuals” like Professor Noam Chomsky convinced many that it was capitalism that was “a grotesque catastrophe,” and “The Soviet Union … was about as remote from socialism as you could imagine.” But that’s ridiculous. Economist Benjamin Powell explains that when the Soviets made private business illegal, “that’s about as close as the world ever saw to the purest socialist end of the spectrum.” That’s “Myth 1”. Whenever socialism fails people always say, “but that wasn’t ‘real’ socialism.” In this video (and our next) we debunk 5 ridiculous myths about socialism. https://youtu.be/bGURPuoXgW45 Socialism Myths: Part 2John StosselMany young people love socialism. They don’t like capitalism. They don’t notice what capitalism give them. They protest in Nikes, and tweet about it from their iPhones. In this video, I continue where I left off in my last video, and debunk more myths about socialism. The first 2 socialist myths are here: https://youtu.be/RVBPgvY3TbU ---- Don't miss the weekly video from Stossel TV. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- Myth #3: Socialism brings good things if it’s DEMOCRATIC socialism. “Democratic socialists believe both the government and the economy should be run by the people by way of the ballot box,” says Van Jones approvingly on CNN. By the ballot box—that’s how Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez took power. “They can start off democratically elected [but] once they centralize control over the economy, it becomes impossible to democratically unelect them,” explains economist Benjamin Powell. “Now democracy in Venezuela is a sham.” Socialism ALWAYS ends up authoritarian. We explain why in the video above. https://youtu.be/e5jr50rrkkA Thomas Sowell vs The LeftJohn StosselAfter last summer’s BLM protests, “experts” declared what America must do for black people: “reparations!", "abolish policing!", “socialism!” These are AWFUL ideas that will hurt blacks, says economist Thomas Sowell. ---- Don't miss the weekly video from Stossel TV. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 —— Sowell is brilliant and courageous. An upcoming Free To Choose film about him, "Thomas Sowell: Common Sense in a Senseless World,” highlights Sowell's incredible life story, and his reasons for opposing big-government policies. Sowell grew up as an orphan in NYC, where he educated himself by reading. He became a Marxist. But that changed when he worked in government and studied economics. "I was a summer intern at the U.S. Department of Labor," he explains. "One of my biggest concerns was about minimum wages. At first, I thought 'well this is good because all these people are poor, and they’ll get a little higher income.'" “Then as I studied economics, I began to see, well, there’s a downside-- they may lose their jobs," he adds. The Department of Labor didn't appreciate that point of view. Ending the minimum wage would take away their power. "I realized the U.S. Department of Labor had its own agenda and interests," he says. Now, at age 90, he still educates about free markets & race-blind policies. He says today’s complaints about America's “systemic racism” are “propaganda". "If you go back into the ‘20s, you find that married-couple families were much more prevalent among blacks then ... As late as 1930, blacks have lower unemployment rates than whites," he points out. More of his excellent points are in the video above. https://youtu.be/Ns3BaXu2kkU Teachers Unions vs StudentsJohn StosselIn the last year, teachers unions showed their true colors, as they placed their own interests ahead of both science and students. ---- Don't miss the weekly video from Stossel TV. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- Teachers unions claim Covid makes schools too dangerous for teachers. That may be true for elderly teachers, but overall, reopening schools is safe. "If we look around the world, 191 countries, there is no consistent link between reopening schools and increased rates of Covid transmission," Heritage Education researcher Lindsey Burke points out. Schools are rarely Covid hotspots. "But it's logical that they would be,” I push back. “The kids are bunched together!" Burke responds: positivity rates in schools are generally below those in the broader community." Studies on tens of thousands of people in the United States do find that closing schools made no difference as far as Covid. Closed schools hurt students, especially poorer kids, because they can’t afford the alternatives available to the privileged. California closed government-run schools, while governor Gavin Newsom sent his kids to a private school that’s open. Why do unions support closures that hurt students, and won't make people safer? It's about money and power. In Oregon, the state teachers union even blocked students from transferring to virtual charters -- schools that pose no Covid risk. We asked the Oregon Education Association -- and twenty other unions -- to respond to these criticisms. None would. The unions are winning. Nice for them, but it’s a big loss for students, parents, and taxpayers. https://youtu.be/VCisCyS4btg Covid HypocritesJohn StosselHypocrites! Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- Just hours after signing an Executive Order requiring masks on federal property, President Joe Biden broke his new rule. California governor Gavin Newsom went to a “friend's" birthday party at a restaurant serving $800 plates. His friend turns out to be a big time lobbyist. My mayor, Bill DeBlasio, danced in Times Square. Normal people had to stay home. Republican governor Tate Reeves, of Mississippi, hosted three Christmas parties that broke his state's guidance. When confronted, he said his party hosting "allows us to really send a message to the people of Mississippi that you can return to a life that is somewhat normal." But it seems that life can return to normal only if you’re a politician. Those four cases are just a sample of politicians’ hypocrisy. The video above includes more. Peter Schiff. John Stossel- 5 Socialism Myths, Thomas Sowell, Peter Schiff- Everything is Going to Get Wiped Out. EVERYTHING John Stossel 5 Socialism Myths Thomas Sowell vs The Left Teachers Unions vs Students Covid Hypocrites Peter Schiff. Everything Is Going To Get Wiped Out. EVERYTHING. https://youtu.be/RVBPgvY3TbU 5 Socialism Myths: Part 1 John Stossel Socialism is now as popular as capitalism among young people. That's because they are being told nonsense. So in this video (and the next) we'll debunk socialism myths. ---- Don't miss the weekly video from Stossel TV. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- After the fall of the Soviet Union, I thought everybody would realize that socialism brings misery. But no, “intellectuals” like Professor Noam Chomsky convinced many that it was capitalism that was “a grotesque catastrophe,” and “The Soviet Union … was about as remote from socialism as you could imagine.” But that's ridiculous. Economist Benjamin Powell explains that when the Soviets made private business illegal, “that's about as close as the world ever saw to the purest socialist end of the spectrum.” That's “Myth 1”. Whenever socialism fails people always say, “but that wasn't ‘real' socialism.” In this video (and our next) we debunk 5 ridiculous myths about socialism. https://youtu.be/bGURPuoXgW4 5 Socialism Myths: Part 2 John Stossel Many young people love socialism. They don't like capitalism. They don't notice what capitalism give them. Sign up here: https://johnstossel.activehosted.com/f/1 ---- Myth #3: Socialism brings good things if it's DEMOCRATIC socialism. “Democratic socialists believe both the government and the economy should be run by the people by way of the ballot box,” says Van Jones approvingly on CNN. By the ballot box—that's how Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez took power. “They can start off democratically elected [but] once they centralize control over the economy, it becomes impossible to democratically unelect them,” explains economist Benjamin Powell. “Now democracy in Venezuela is a sham.” Socialism ALWAYS ends up authoritarian. We explain why in the video above. https://youtu.be/e5jr50rrkkA Thomas Sowell vs The Left John Stossel After last summer's BLM protests, “experts” declared what America must do for black people: “reparations!", "abolish policing!", “socialism!” These are AWFUL ideas that will hurt blacks, says economist Thomas Sowell. At first, I thought 'well this is good because all these people are poor, and they'll get a little higher income.'" “Then as I studied economics, I began to see, well, there's a downside-- they may lose their jobs," he adds. The Department of Labor didn't appreciate that point of view. Ending the minimum wage would take away their power. "I realized the U.S. Department of Labor had its own agenda and interests," he says. Now, at age 90, he still educates about free markets & race-blind policies. He says today's complaints about America's “systemic racism” are “propaganda". "If you go back into the ‘20s, you find that married-couple families were much more prevalent among blacks then ... As late as 1930, blacks have lower unemployment rates than whites," he points out. More of his excellent points are in the video above. https://youtu.be/Ns3BaXu2kkU Teachers Unions vs Students John Stossel In the last year, teachers unions showed their true colors, as they placed their own interests ahead of both science and students. Closed schools hurt students, especially poorer kids, because they can't afford the alternatives available to the privileged. California closed government-run schools, while governor Gavin Newsom sent his kids to a private school that's open. Nice for them, but it's a big loss for students, parents, and taxpayers. https://youtu.be/VCisCyS4btg Covid Hypocrites John Stossel Hypocrites! President Biden, Governor Newsom, Mayor DeBlasio, Governor Tate Reeves. In this video, I show how they cheat on their own Covid rules. ---- Don't miss the weekly video from Stossel TV. When confronted, he said his party hosting "allows us to really send a message to the people of Mississippi that you can return to a life that is somewhat normal." But it seems that life can return to normal only if you're a politician. Those four cases are just a sample of politicians' hypocrisy. The video above includes more. Peter Schiff. Trump's fiercest supporters are loathe to consider the possibility that he'll be leaving office in January. Thomas L. Knapp has some very principled suggestions of what the president could do with his remaining time to burnish his legacy by hobbling leviathan. Keeping government limited to its proper role is a challenge everywhere. Jason S. Reed explains how as an obese person, he is not a problem for government to solve. Likewise, coronavirus is not a government issue, it's a personal medical issue. When it comes to how the coronavirus should be handled, Benjamin Powell spells out the obvious: For better health and a stronger economy, authorities need to resist the urge to flex their power by locking us down. If there's a silver lining to the current election chaos we're experiencing, it's that the faith of government cultists is being shaken to its core. Alex R. Knight III has an excellent essay on how it's getting harder to trust government and why that's a good thing. (Alex will be my guest on Friday's show) The prospect of heavy-handed governance is growing by the day. This episode dives into the scandalous origins of the war on drugs. Prior to 1914, drugs were widely available. Yet with each successive step of prohibition this past century, governments have lied to the public about the underlying reason for criminalizing drugs. This week’s episode of People, Process, Service found hosts Bill Kasko, President and CEO of Frontline Source Group, and Tyler Kern, Publisher at MarketScale sitting down with economics professor, Bob Lawson, Director of the O’Neil Center for Global Markets and Freedom at Southern Methodist University. Lawson’s book, Socialism Sucks, was the topic of conversation. Lawson and his fellow economist, Benjamin Powell, set out on a world tour of socialist countries to find out what works and what doesn’t about them. The results? Lawson appreciates the economic opportunities of America, and he won’t be teaching in Venezuela anytime soon. But the most important discovery for Lawson was, the beers in these socialist countries are terrible—and such few options. To spice up the pot for this lively conversation, Kern, Kasko, and Lawson drank their way through the episode, sampling a dozen beers, while they each guessed what country from which each beer came. Kern’s strategy: guess Heineken®️ every time, and eventually, he’d be right. So, what exactly makes a country Socialist? Lawson dispelled some myths for Kasko and Kern. Sweden and Canada may have socialized medicine, but they still have a free market economy. Even China enjoys the benefits of the free market, albeit with government control. Lawson described the process of writing Socialism Sucks, and he shared his stories of visits to socialist countries such as Cuba and Venezuela, where government economic control results in limited choice and freedoms. And one constant remained above all—the beer in the socialist countries Lawson visited, sucked.

My guests for this episode are Alex Nowrasteh and Andrew Forrester of the Cato Institute. Our topic is a working paper they recently published titled How Mass Immigration Affects Countries with Weak Economic Institutions: A Natural Experiment in Jordan. The abstract reads as follows: Saddam Hussein’s unexpected 1990 invasion of Kuwait forced 300, 000 Kuwaitis of Palestinian descent to flee into Jordan. By 1991, this large exogenous population shock increased Jordan’s population by about 10 percent. Jordanian law allowed these refugees to work, live, and vote in Jordan immediately upon entry. The refugees did not bring social capital that eroded Jordan’s institutions. On the contrary, we find that Jordan’s economic institutions substantially improved in the decade after the refugees arrived. Our empirical methodology employs difference-in-differences and the synthetic control method, both of which indicate that the significant improvement in Jordanian economic institutions would not have happened to the same extent without the influx of refugees. Our case study indicates that the refugee surge was the main mechanism by which Jordan’s economic institutions improved over this time. Does mass immigration destroy institutions? 1990s Israel as a natural experiment by Benjamin Powell, J.R. Clark and Alex Nowrasteh Jared Rubin's interview about political power and economic growth is complementary with this one. Rubin's theory is that the rising political influence of the bourgeoisie partially caused the economic growth in Northwestern Europe in the early modern period. In Jordan in 1990, the Palestinian minority was particularly urban and bourgeois, so the massive influx of Palestinians increased the political power of the bourgeoisie, thus creating political pressure for increasing economic freedom.

Last week, Bob examined how the United States has ended up in a situation that would have frustrated the Framer's intentions, had they seen it coming. The next president will likely hold more authority than was ever supposed to be granted to a single person, by virtue of nominating the ninth judge to a sharply divided “4-4” court. Ilya Shapiro is carefully observing the political chess game around the Supreme Court nomination, and urges Senate Republicans not to hold hearings or a confirmation vote for President Obama's nominee, Merrick Garland. Instead, he says they should wait until after a new president is elected – making the judicial pick the paramount issue in the coming election. Shapiro joins the show this Sunday to argue that “We, the People” should make the choice of who determines the make-up of the court, with so much on the line. Later, Bob will break down a new video from Learn Liberty featuring The Free Market Institute's Benjamin Powell on the surprising truth about sweatshops and child labor laws.

The book also presents different policy recommendations in light of the economic evidence—including proposals for a market in visas, open borders, and cuts in legal immigration. The author and editor will be joined by Neil G. Ruiz, PhD, Executive Director of the Center for Law, Economics, and Finance at George Washington University, who will offer his own comments and criticisms. Please join us as four economists discuss the economic impact of immigration. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Wes Bertrand joins me to discuss a couple emails he recently sent to Stefan Molyneux and Mike DeMarco from Freedomain Radio. Those emails are reprinted below: From: Wes Bertrand Subject: Ominous parallelsDate: September 4, 2015 at 8:41:45 PM EDTTo: Michael DeMarco Hello, Michael, and by extension, Stefan. I’ve appreciated the many helpful and insightful messages FDR has sent its listeners and viewers over the years. Thank you for all the time and effort you’ve expended to inspire individuals in so many enriching and enlightened ways. Though this is not a fan email, I hope you note the vital significance of it, so that your show is able to gain more respect from those who value truth. Basically, I’m writing to express my grave concerns about the ideas that have been promoted on your podcast, particularly in this episode:FDR3052 Donald Trump’s Immigration Plan: An Honest Conversationhttp://cdn.freedomainradio.com/FDR_3052_Trump_Immigration.mp3 I realize that both of you believe in the efficacy and morality of free markets instead of tyranny, which in the past have been articulated extensively. So, your advocacy of Trump’s anti-immigration views and his overall anti-economic agenda (which Jeffrey covered with sufficient clarity here: https://tucker.liberty.me/trumpism-the-ideology/ ) runs noticeably discordant. This particular topic of policing statist “borders" really hits home with me, despite not being an “illegal” person (one must be privy to The Anatomy Of Slavespeak - http://www.mind-trek.com/reports/tl07a.htm ). In 2009 I was detained (with threat of being gunned down) by the so-called U.S. border patrol for about 6 hours with my Indonesian friend Siska, who had a student visa, just not with her at the time since we were going to photograph wild flowers, so her sister was ordered to drive for hours to deliver her paperwork to us in the desert of Ocotillo, CA on her behalf. The papers her sister brought were insufficient for our captors, however. Had it not been for a bureaucratic paperwork glitch, she would have been deported that day (through no fault of her own). It might come as a surprise to you that we weren’t crossing any statist borders. The jackboots in southern California were running a check point approximately 12 miles inside the arbitrary statist line in the sand (still present here - https://goo.gl/maps/Y4Bj0 ), which I recounted in this episode of Complete Liberty Podcast:Episode 63 - Freedom to travel, reside, and work without government, where property rights are respected -> link When I heard Stefan read Trump's proposed policy of actually building a physical wall from California to Texas (the ultimate police-state boondoggle, aside from the insane NSA data mining process) in order to supposedly keep out Mexicans, as well as any Americans like myself desiring free travel, I waited for some sign of objective, critical philosophical analysis from him. Tragically, there was none, and I’m still waiting to hear it. Instead, I heard various economic fallacies about “illegals” harming the economy for “citizens" amidst the domestic ills of welfare statism. I encourage you to process your fears and concerns with the principles of voluntaryism (honoring individuals and markets, strictly disavowing governmental methods) as well as more evidence; Benjamin Powell has done a lot of freedom-oriented work in this realm - http://www.independent.org/aboutus/person_detail.asp?id=1023 . I’m puzzled about why you did not explicitly note the massive contradictions and intolerable harm involved in playing politics too, i.e., granting any legitimacy to the enforcement of statist “laws”—since no one has ANY right to such a rights-violating process. Not to explicitly and consistently denounce statist policies (i.e., aggression) is not to be philosophical. It’s a massive contradiction to say that, in the absence of a free market, we need to engage in the coercive, political means; such pragmatism only perpetuates rights-violations. The really odd thing is that I suspect you know that a paradigm shift in the philosophy of a society cannot happen with more advocacy of the political status quo (collectivistic, in-group/out-group, tax-fed, law-enforcing, welfare-statist thinking). As you know, many of the podcasters in the liberty community viewed your initiation of the DMCA take-down process on YouTube as being pro-IP and, thus, a major departure from your previously voluntaryist moorings. I disagreed with that position too, because it violated property rights, as well as Stefan’s previously stated beliefs against IP. Yet, the gravity of your recent choice to promote the totalitarian fascist agendas of Trump overshadows this (as does endorsing the costly, coercive strategies of the spurious “freedom club,” via the collectivistic abstraction of "Western civilization”). This strikes me as eerily similar to the intellectual inception of Nazi Germany—definitely no joke. Trump’s views are the epitome of populism, nationalism, and mob mentality, based on contradictions, fear, distrust, and aggression. There are ominous parallels in our culture to those of Nazi Germany (as Peikoff outlined decades ago: link ), which were evidenced at the end of your episode regarding a survey of Americans’ confused views on immigration. from http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887324577904578557352244619768"Their theses were often focused on racial and biological studies within populations, particularly where German minorities lived. The controversial borders that were drawn after 1919 in countries like Poland and Czechoslovakia rankled many of them.” from http://www.slate.com"Hitler, the suitable ruffian, could never have done it on his own. He could never have done it with all his party. He needed a climate of belief—the belief that Weimar was a problem requiring a solution. Having solved it, he was free to answer his version of the Jewish Question—the question that the intellectuals had fooled with on paper. Only the madmen among them had ever thought it needed to be answered with fire. But the sane ones had helped open the door for the avenger that the madmen had dreamed of.” wikipedia link Please let me know if you want to discuss these matters either in public or private. Understanding and promoting the principles of true freedom mean a great deal in an age of philosophical confusion and psychological unawareness. Thank you for your time and consideration, Wes p.s., I have a lengthy list of notes I’ve taken over the last year concerning various other ideas conveyed by FDR, because they diverge from logic and sound evidence in places, so clarification is needed. The issue above takes precedence for now, however. From: Wes Bertrand Subject: Fwd: Ominous parallelsDate: September 24, 2015 at 3:37:12 PM EDTTo: Michael DeMarco Cc: Chris Stefanick Hi again, Michael. It’s been nearly three weeks since I sent the email below to you, and I’ve gotten no reply. Am I correct in assuming that you and Stefan do not want to have a conversation about this disturbing and confusing trend in FDR’s message these days? I want you to know that there is still the possibility to reverse course, make amends, and engage in restorative justice with your listeners who seek philosophical rigor and objectivity. As I see it, that is the only way you can regain credibility as a philosophy show, which I’d like to see you do. If you believe that I’ve somehow misinterpreted your present views, then let’s have a discussion about it (again, in private or on your call-in show). A few days after I sent this first email, I was waylaid by armed enforcers of the so-called U.S. border, while driving back from Ottawa (visited some dear voluntaryist friends there). After asking a litany of intrusive questions, which seems to be their primary tax-fed “job,” they demanded that I stay in their building while they proceeded to search every nook and cranny of my vehicle, including all my personal possessions, which took the better part of an hour; I was also personally searched. It was a complete violation of property rights, and when I conveyed this simple truth to them, among other liberty-oriented statements, they of course provided rationalizations in place of valid arguments—the mainstay of humans who are trying to downplay the significance of massive contradictions. If I had defended my person and property from their aggressive actions, I would have been murdered. This is the nature of “border enforcement”: individuals are harassed, suffer, and even die as a consequence. You know, Stefan used to not give disclaimers or caveats in his shows (like you've done on the ones that cheerlead for Trump), because he adhered to the principles of voluntaryism. Here’s an example (from over eight years ago) of the person who the liberty community admired, when he recognized the profound significance of the individual (based on reason, volition, and life-giving values) rather than the collective (based on spurious notions of race, genes, “ethnicity,” etc.):link I’ve Cd’d my friend Chris in this correspondence, because I plan on reading my email below that I sent you and Stefan (who also apparently un-contacted me on Skype) as well as sharing related thoughts on his Choice Conversations Podcast, when we record in about a week. We will also post Stef's “Immigration And Empathy” episode in order to show the stark contrast between promoting sound principles and deviating from them. If you take it off your server, I can put it in my Complete Liberty Podcast feed, since these ideas matter so much—individuals matter so much!
