It's claimed Government "brainfreeze" is leading to an unregulated short-term let market in Clare and consequently forcing young people out of Ireland. The Short-Term Tourist Letting Bill drafted during the summer would require providers on platforms like AirBnB to have a valid registration number with Fáilte Ireland for their short-term lets. For the week beginning on November 25th, there are 799 available properties on AirBnB in Clare. Lahinch-based businessman and Independent General Election candidate Paddy Murphy says it's "disgraceful" that young people are competing with prospective short-term let providers for homes.
The various parties and independents are continuing their canvassing and campaigning for General Election 2024. The Clare electorate will cast their votes on the 29th of November, when they will choose the four TD's to represent the county in the 34th Dáil. Let's get a flavour of what has been happening on the campaign trail. The Housing Minister says he can't speculate on when house prices will moderate. The Social Democrats would introduce a three-year rent freeze if elected to government. Meanwhile, Fine Gael is promising to cap childcare costs at 600 euros per month for every family. To discuss all of this and more, Alan Morrissey was joined by Fianna Fáil candidate Timmy Dooley, Social Democrats candidate Hilary Tonge, and Independent candidate Paddy Murphy. Supernatural experiences abound in Irish Folklore. The veil is thin between the concrete world and the other dimensions especially in the dark part of the year. The stories are told by Teresa Flynn from Mountshannon, Paddy Murphy, Joe Jack Sexton and Martin Walsh from Mullagh, John Hastings from Quin, Bridie Mahony from Moughna, Peggy Hogan from Feakle, and Sean Crowe from Broadford.GLOSSARY OF TERMSBanshee or 'Bean sí' a female spirit in Irish and other folklores whose appearance or wailing warns of impending death'Cóiste bodhar' or Death Coach: a harbinger of death.'Habit': Attire for dead person, similar to monk's habit. Sold in local shops. A plenary indulgence (Catholic faith) was gained if the hand of the dying person was put through the sleeve of the habit before they died.'Ragairne' / 'going on ragairne': night visiting to neighbours' houses'Piseogs': A form of folk magic, always malevolent. Performed to cause misfortune to someone, such as burying eggs or an animal carcass on someone's land. 'Making a churn': making butter'Scillanes': seed potatoes'Sock of the plough': metal part of a plough'Bittling': a way of washing clothes in the river by slapping them on a wooden block (a bittle). This sound was offered as an explanation for the handclap sometimes heard when the Banshee appeared.Series 2 of The Clare Oral History Podcast is supported by The Ireland FundsFollow Cuimhneamh an Chláir on Instagram, Facebook, X or LinkedIn

Entre 1986 e 1991, o Loop lançou 3 álbuns Heaven's End (1987), fade Out (1989) e A Gilded Eternity (1990). Katz – It'll never end Trio lo-fi de Manchester formado por Ben Williams (vocals / rhythm guitar), James Bradbury (lead guitar) e Paddy Murphy (drums). Som interessante, que mistura uma influência meio garage band com surf rock, e aquele minimalismo punk rock. Divertido. Lançaram o primeiro single em 2019 e agora saiu o primeiro disco cheio. Gostou? Curta, compartilhe, comente. Estamos nas redes socias @meusons e @alternativab - no instagram. I listened to it while I was driving to Magic City Con last week. Curse him! It was really good. He's such a good storyteller. I find it frustrating that I'm not better because I would really like to do a show like that. I just don't feel it would be as good. Ah well... Summer break for the kids is making it difficult to plan ahead with podcasts. Pub Songs & Stories is coming out slower than I'd like. In June, I released... The Harpers #232: Was the harp banned by Queen Elizabeth? Hear the origins of the song Soul of a Harper by Rie Sheridan Rose. Songwriting as a parent offers its own special joys, songs about the children we love. Plus, was it horrible, the night that Paddy Murphy died? Next time, there are a couple stories by Carl Asch of Empty Hats and Adrian of Tartanic. So far the Virtual Public House CD is not selling well. I'm not sure if that's an issue of promotion (or lack thereof) or the type of CD. So if you want to own a limited-edition CD, get it now. The album will be available for just a few more months. But it won't last the year. I had some good episodes of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast in June. I'm particularly excited about the release of The Gothard Sisters' new CD, Dragonfly. I feature several tracks and will continue to. The Brobdingnagian Bards Podcast and Celtfather Music & Travel were on hiatus. I did release a couple Stories from the Road podcasts on Patreon though. I'm also starting to think about the next In the 'Verse podcast. I need to get back to songwriting. That podcast will help. 9:34 - VIDEOS Coffee with The Celtfather ended well. Those season finales seem to do pretty well. I started planning the themes for season 9 which will start on Thursday, August 5. I'm seriously considering signing back up to ReStream, which will once again allow me to broadcast on multiple platforms. Though, I will still stick primarily with YouTube. Maybe I'll just do one month. The re-launch of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast YouTube channel is posing problematic. YouTube stopped allowing me to edit shows on their website. So I used a secondary website. And that's just too much work for someone who has not enough time. So I might discontinue that. My Celtfather Live concert this month had a fairly light attendance. But it was a great group of Gunn Runners. I can't tell you how happy it makes me to know there are so many people who support my music. The next Celtfather Live is a FREE SHOW. It's scheduled for Thursday, July 15 at 8 pm ET. 11:17 - IN THE STUDIO I finally finished up "By Amazing Grace", "Bright Side of Everything", "Favor of a Dance", "Kilty Pleasure", and "Breathing". So we much closer to finishing up Selcouth. I'm thinking of having a private listening party for Gunn Runners to help me decide which are the best tracks on the album. I'm also gonna do that with my family. ALEP is postponed once again. So looks like Sam Gillogly and I have more time to finish our Dancing With Hobbits album. We still have quite a few tracks to release. "Name On My Soul" by Kilted Kings was released as a single this month. Listens have not been great. But oh well... The full album is out on June 25 under the title Flower of Scotland. 13:14 - MERCH Virtual Public House is still on sale. I haven't picked a date for it to be pulled. But I will give you at least a month's heads up. You can download a free MP3 every month from this CD when you sign up to my mailing list. I'm brainstorming more merch to sell at conventions in the next couple months. I'll let you know how that goes. I re-released several Firefly related merch items in preparation for the next Celtfather Live show. Meantime, subscribe to my mailing list, you get a discount code to save 15%. 14:19 - CELTIC TRAVEL The Celtic Invasion of Scotland is officially open to past Invaders. Was the harp banned by Queen Elizabeth? Hear the origins of the song Soul of a Harper by Rie Sheridan Rose. Songwriting as a parent offers its own special joys, songs about the children we love. Plus, was it horrible, the night that Paddy Murphy died? Welcome to Pub Songs & Stories. This is a Virtual Public House for musicians to share the stories and inspiration behind their music. My name is Marc Gunn. Today's show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. Subscribe to the podcast and download free music when you sign up at PubSong.com. #pubsongs #harpers #queenelizabeth WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY 0:32 - “The Night Paddy Murphy Died” from Going for Brogue 6:11 - WELCOME kids back in school. Correction from last show 10:22 - “The Lady of Setliff Manor” from Soul of a Harper 12:22 - TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS. Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. We're going to Scotland in 2022. Join the invasion at http://celticinvasion.com/ 13:40 - Was the harp banned by Queen Elizabeth? That's the story that Rie Sheridan Rose heard. It led to the creation of a great song first recorded by my old band, the Brobdingnagian Bards. It also became the album title for my first official solo CD. Rie Sheridan Rose is a published author and poet. Little did I know when she gave me the lyrics to this song that I would be singing it twenty years later and have collaborated with her on many songs since. You can hear more of her songs and about our collaborations on show #210 of this show. 16:34 - History on Rie's Story I did a search to find out more about this period in history, to sort of corroborate Rie's story. I found several websites that said, yes indeed, it did happen. Here's some info from HipHarp.com: “The Irish harpers began to be suppressed after the Anglo-Norman invasion in the 12th century, which broke down the old cultural systems. The kings, who always had their own personal harpers, who were of very high standing, were replaced with English nobles. The Irish harpers began an existence of wandering from court to court. The English accused them of being spies. Queen Elizabeth decreed in 1603 that all Irish harp players should be hung and their harps burned. Interestingly, the British loved Irish harp music and usually employed harp players of their own. Queen Elizabeth had one. I guess he was immune. Cromwell was even more radical than Elizabeth and pretty much finished them off. Of course the harp tradition didn't die out all at once. Turlough O'Carolan, the most famous of the Irish harpers we have on record lived from 1670-1738. But 1792 was the last harp meeting in Belfast and by the beginning of the 19th century harp playing had pretty much died out. In Scotland the harp players were able to hide out in the Highlands, but the Battle of Culloden (1745?) pretty much finished off Scottish Highland culture and with it the harp players.” 19:32 - “Soul of a Harper” from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 23:01 - Songwriting as a parent offers its own special joys, songs about the children we love. Autoharpers like myself often liken ourselves to actual harpers. The great Irish harper, Turlough O'Carolan, is a favorite of us, but now it's time to highlight an actual harper and songwriter. Sharon Powers is a Celtic harpist in Birmingham, AL. She has played professionally since 2016. Her musical stylings lend both touches of elegance and whimsy that delight the ears of all who listen. She is also the mother of a baby named Arthur as she'll tell you about it in her story. 26:12 - “Arthur's Lullaby” by Sharon Powers from Single -- New Irish & Celtic Song Lyrics. I updated the lyrics for all of the songs I sing in this show. You will find lyrics and chords so you can play along with me. KIDS' TABLE (Chicago) Kids’ Table aka Paddy Murphy (@dubious-music) spent his early rave days consuming every genre that the Glasgow party scene had to offer before moving to Oxford, where most weekends were spent record shopping and raving in South London. Since an early trip to Chicago and experiencing unabashed freedom of US dancefloors, he later moved to the Midwest city to harangue record shop staff and DJs alike for all the tips and IDs they have. This mix is collection of the electronic genres and rhythms, both new and old, that keep him infinitely fascinated by music from his diverse roots. Tracklist: 01. Hello pals! Andy's leg is on the mend and now, we have the rescheduled EPISODE 110! This week, the prodigal son returns! Almost exactly a year since his last appearance, where we discussed the merits (or otherwise) of Jason Goes To Hell, he's back! He is the director of The Perished and the man behind survival horror video game channel Let's Survive: Paddy Plays... It's Paddy Murphy! His chosen film? GHOULIES 2! The synopsis is as follows: Pint-sized monsters known as Ghoulies hop aboard a traveling carnival, where their violent behavior and grotesque looks are most likely to go unnoticed. There, the gremlin-like creatures find a new home in a haunted house attraction. As the creatures earn their keep by scaring visitors, the carnival finds itself running in the black for the first time in years. But things quickly turn sour when, to the shock of carny Uncle Ned, the Ghoulies start taking bites out of the customers. Well, they've ploughed, They've sown, they've harrowed him in Threw clouds upon his head Till these three men were satisfied John Barleycorn was dead They've let him lie for a long long time Till the rains from heaven did fall And little sir John sprang up his head And so amazed them all They let him fly till the midsummer's day Till he looked both pale and wan, oh Then little Sir John has grown a long long beard And so became a man They have hired men with the scythes so sharp To cut him off at the knee, They rolled and they tied him around the waist Serving him most him barbarously They hired men with the sharp pitchforks To prick him to the heart And the loader he has served him worse than that For he's bound him to the cart Well, they've wheeled him 'round and 'round the field Till they came onto a barn And there they made their solemn oath Concerning a Barleycorn They hired men with the crab tree sticks To split him skin from bone, yeah But the miller he has served him worst and bad For he ground him between two stones Well there's beer all in the barrel And brandy in the glass, But little old sir John with his nut-brown bowl Proved the strongest man at last John Barleycorn, throw him up, throw him up! Now the huntsman, he can't hunt the fox Nor loudly blow his horn And the tinker he can't mend his pots Without John Barleycorn, John Barleycorn, John Barleycorn Barleycorn, Barleycorn John Barleycorn, John Barleycorn The Night Pat Murphy Died Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget Some of the boys got loaded drunk, and they ain't got sober yet; As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gay O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honour and their pride; They said it was a sin and shame and they winked at one another And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died As Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner pouring out her grief Kelly and his gang came tearing down the street They went into an empty room and a bottle of whiskey stole They put the bottle with the corpse to keep that whiskey cold That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honour and their pride; They said it was a sin and shame and they winked at one another And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died About two o'clock in the morning after empty'ing the jug Doyle rolls up the ice box lid to see poor Paddy's mug We stopped the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn't tell the time And at a quarter after two we argued it was nine That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honour and their pride; They said it was a sin and shame and they winked at one another And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died They stopped the hearse on George Street outside Sundance Saloon They all went in at half past eight and staggered out at noon They went up to the graveyard, so holy and sublime Found out when they got there, they'd left the corpse behind! That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honour and their pride; They said it was a sin and shame and they winked at one another And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget Some of the boys got loaded drunk and they ain't been sober yet; As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gay O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play That's how they showed their respect for Paddy Murphy That's how they showed their honour and their pride; They said it was a sin and shame and they winked at one another And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died Great to be a Pirate Soon you'll be a dead man Ain't it great to be a pirate, laddie To sail the seas and to end just like your daddy Draw your cutlass, spark your pistol's flash pan Steal gold to spend before you are a dead man soon you'll be a dead man. Ain't it great, to be a pirate, Laddie To sail the seas, and to hang just like your daddy Draw your cutlass, spark your pistol's flash pan Steal gold to spend, for soon you'll be a dead man for soon you'll be a dead man. Wild Mountain Tyme Oh, the summertime is comin' And the trees are sweetly bloomin' And the wild mountain thyme Grows around the purple heather Will you go? Lassie, will you go? And we'll all go together To pick wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather Will you go? Lassie, will you go? I will build my love a tower By yon pure and crystal fountain Yes and on it I will lay All the flowers of the mountain Will you go? Lassie, will ya go? And we will all go together To pick wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather Will you go? Lassie, will you go? If my true love won't come with me Then I would surely find another To pick wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather Will you go? Lassie, will ya go? And we will all go together To pick wild mountain thyme All around the purple heather Will you go? Will you go? Lassie will you go? The Man in the Moon The man in the moon dropped in last night He and Miss Muffet stopped in for a bite They said little boy blue was out for the night Chasing cows through the Milky Way They ask my opinion on kippers and kings And did I think trouble went around like a ring Did you ever hear such a curious thing Did you think it would make me cry I say to myself down and said where did you go Why did you leave as I started to grow They both shake their heads and softly said no It’s a trick of perspective you see Like all the king’s horses and all the kings men You’ve been marching away since this story began You went straight away in search of an end For something you thought might be Now I sit at a desk while my dreams all die The telephone rings, the debts pile high While I’d rather be somewhere up in the sky Singing songs with the man in the moon Twinkle twinkle little star How I wonder what you are Op above the world so high A diamond in the sky They both smiled and stood and said thanks for the tea But they had an appointment at a quarter to three They said look them up if by chance I was free They’d be happy to shine on down So I’m sleeping out in the yard tonight And I don’t care if the midges may bite For the stars overhead are a beautiful sight And the moon is shining down So when you sit at your desk in your dreams all die The telephone rings and the debts pile high Wouldn’t you rather be up in the sky Singing songs with the man in the moon Oh what a wonderful tune Singing songs with the man on the moon. Bonnie Ship the Diamond The Diamond is a ship, my lads For the Davis Strait we're bound The quay it is all garnished With bonnie lasses 'round Captain Thompson gives the order To sail the ocean wide Where the sun it never sets, my lads Nor darkness dims the sky For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale Along the quay at Peterhead The lasses stand aroon Wi' their shawls all pulled around them And the saut tears runnin' doon Don't you weep, my bonnie wee lass Though you be left behind For the rose will grow on Greenland's ice Before we change our mind For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale Here's a health to the Resolution Likewise the Eliza Swan Three cheers for the Battler of Montrose And the Diamond, ship of fame We wear the trousers o' the white The jackets o' the blue When we get back to Peterhead We'll hae sweethearts enou' For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale It will be bright both day and night When the Greenland lads come hame Our ship full up with oil, my lads And money to our name We'll make the cradles for to rock And the blankets for to tear And every lass in Peterhead sing ""Hushabye, my dear"" For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale For it's cheer up my lads Let your hearts never fail For the bonnie ship the Diamond Goes a-hunting for the whale We are Ye Banished Privateers Ye Banished Privateers In a filthy old tavern in the port of Belfast There sat a drunken laddie, he was tall as a scooner's mast He said ""My name is Charles and I am your king An' my royal arse on your ship you shall bring!"" Well I said ""You sure can swagger, but a king you are not"" And if I had that fucker here, I'd sure have him shot! ""But I need one more swabber, and we're leavin' tonight And you'll find the pay is good, can you sail, can you fight."" We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer But Charlie was a weak one, a real worthless prick He threw up all the time 'cause the salt made 'em sick And when we were plundering a rich merchant ship He ran into hiding, trembling his lip But sea legs can grow on the weakest of lads It turned out some talent in fencing I had Once I grew fond of the pirate charade I'd be the first to dive into the fray We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer We roamed all over the seven seas We plundered wherever there riches may be From ye coast of Tortuga to ye shores of Cape Horn We looted n' pillaged both poor and well born For each passing year an' each bottle of rum Had Charlie a more vicious pirate become One with the laddies so fearful and great He advanced to the rank of first mate We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer But each thing so good, must come to an end And Charlie a letter from England was sent It turned that rascal was truly our king He returned from his exile during the spring I gave them my blessing to rove n' I said ""A yearly wager in gold you'll be paid But back home to England you cannot return For you are the scum of the Earth I have learned!"" We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer We are Ye Banished Privateers We are King Charlie's rovers, we're sailors besmeared We are Ye Banished Privateers We'll be hanged by the neck if near England we steer!
Hello friends! As you may have seen on social media this week, we have had to reschedule the recording of this week's Episode on Ghoulies 2 with Paddy Murphy due to Andy picking up an issue with his knee that required treatment. With that in mind, the recording of the Ghoulies 2 episode has been rescheduled and will now be released on Friday July 24th. So, we put our heads together and decided that, rather than leave an empty void, we would put something out and so we bring you a taster of The Irredeemables series. The Irredeemables will be a series which, going forward, will be exclusive to Patreon subscribers in which we look at truly, deeply bad films and try to determine if there's anything to love... We begin with this... The Bye Bye Man! Let us know your thoughts... The synopsis is as follows: People commit unthinkable acts every day. Time and again, we grapple to understand what drives a person to do such terrible things. But what if all of the questions we're asking are wrong? What if the cause of all evil is not a matter of what, but who? When three college friends stumble upon the horrific origins of the Bye Bye Man, they discover that there is only one way to avoid his curse: don't think it, don't say it. But once the Bye Bye Man gets inside your head, he takes control. Please note that this podcast may contain strong language and even stronger Scottish accents. Lockdown continues. Losing control. Bring the yuks! It's Episode 103! Our guest this week is the author of the novels THE BOY, THE REMAKING and Marvel's SCREAM: CURSE OF CARNAGE... It's Clay McLeod Chapman! His chosen film? Student Bodies! The synopsis is as follows: In this seminal horror-comedy, an anonymous killer known only as "the Breather" terrorizes the teenagers of Lamab High by killing every student who indulges in sex. The long list of suspects includes the school's psychoanalyst, nurse, principal and, most surprisingly, virginal student Toby, who's always at the scene of the crime. Toby knows she's innocent, however, and vows to catch the killer. Huge thanks to Clay for joining us! Follow him on Instagram HERE! Also, massive thanks to PADDY MURPHY, for his opening message! With Episode 62, we gleefully continue the stomp towards this years' Frightfest with another chat with a festival adjacent director... This time, it is the man behind the short film Retribution, the feature film The Three Don'ts and the Frightfest 2019 selection The Perished... It's Paddy Murphy! His chosen film? Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday! Yes! Jason is back in this, the ninth installment in the slasher franchise. Released in 1993 and helmed by 23 year old director Adam Marcus (Secret Santa), Jason Goes to Hell was the first in the series to step away from the familiar stalk-and-slash formula to something a little more supernatural. Does it succeed? That's up to you! The Synopsis is as follows: After being blown away by a team of FBI agents, Jason Voorhees needs to find a way to overcome certain death. When his bloodied remains are sent to the morgue, his heart, still intact, is able to hypnotize a coroner and take over his body. After brutally dispatching a couple of FBI agents, he heads back to his favorite stomping grounds: Crystal Lake. Jason commences another teen massacre while a bounty hunter discovers the only way to kill him. During Irish Open week at Lahinch, Matt Adams graciously sat down with me at the 19th pub on main street for a chat and a pint or two. If I never do another podcast, I'm good with that. Matt tells some great stories from being in golf manufacturing to interviewing Arnold Palmer with some golden moments in between. Thanks to Paddy Murphy for the use of a corner of the pub and thanks to you for pressing play. Stay tuned for another episode coming next week.

Paddy Murphy is an Irish comedian, actor and all round entertainer! Paddy is best known for his work on the popular Facebook and YouTube channel’s “Rory’s Stories” where he performs in topical sketches reflecting the current state of Ireland often with a GAA influenced twist. Paddy also appeared on the first season of RTE’s First Dates where he charmed the socks off a nation. And, as well as this, Paddy was a regular contributor to the popular FACTS YouTube channel. Unfortunately, Paddy is also a die hard Liverpool fan, god bless him... @paddykmurphy
http://thecomedycast.com/ Hello and welcome back to The Comedy Cast; today you'll be hearing from Scottish stand-up comedian David Callan. We kicked off the interview talking about David's day job and how the service industry isn't as crushingly horrible as office work, we spoke then about where David was raised, Essex in London and how even though he was born there he always had a Scottish accent. We talk about David living in Edinburgh now, having moved up there for university and how it has a special place in my heart as you all probably know by know. We have a chat then about his parents still living in England, whether Brexit has changed anything and the delight in seeing England lose to Iceland at last year's Euros. We get on to comedy then and speak about how and why David got into comedy; winning a place on a comedy course that led to his first gig. We also speak about comedy competitions, their pros and cons and both why new comedians should and shouldn't enter them. We talk about David winning a place on a comedy course and how that led to his first gig. David speaks then about how it's always better when a comedian is starting out not to bring along a ready-made posse of fans; family, colleagues and that performing in front of people you don't know will make you a far better comedian. We have a chat then about David MC-ing and how it's taught him to be more spontaneous and not to be afraid of the audience. We return to the subject of the comedy course he took before he started and we speak about some of the tips he learned both about performing and the industry as a whole. Finally then we speak about David gigging at the ongoing Glasgow Comedy Festival, our shared undying love for the Joe Rogan podcast; Alex Jones being a bit mad and David's comedic influenc
http://thecomedycast.com/ Today you'll be hearing from Scottish stand-up comedian Kevin McPadden. We kicked off the interview by speaking about Kevin's upcoming Glasgow Comedy Festival shows and how his preparations are going for this year's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. That good us talking about Kevin's writing process , how he prepares his sets and how he likes to explore ideas for jokes. We spoke then about Kevin's first gig, in The Stand in Edinburgh, not a bad place to start at all. We spoke about how it went and what he remembers of it. We spoke then about how and why Kevin got into comedy. And we speak too about how he used to be nervous before gigs and how he's learned to deal with it. We also chat about the first time Kevin bombed and how he dusted himself off and learned from the experience. We speak then for a bit about the dreaded 'comedian's comedian' term and alternative comedy. We talk about his influences in particular Scottish comedians and American ones. We speak a bit about Kevin's writing process and how he decides on whether a joke is good enough or maybe if it needs some flashing out to improve it and how long he gives a joke before binning it if it's not working. We chat about if performing stand-up all the time and seeing so much other stand-up has lead to Kevin enjoying seeing stand-up a bit less and we natter about the challenge of going from doing 10, 15 & 20 minute sets to doing 1hour sets at last year's Edinburgh Fringe. Finally then we speak about the health of the current Scottish stand-up comedy scene and how his gigs south of the border in England went when he ventures over Hadrian's Wall.
http://thecomedycast.com We started off the interview speaking about where Sam is from, Newport in Wales, a place famous for having a documentary about bouncers and a new KFC. We spoke about living in and growing in a place with a Bad Reputation. We had a chat then about Sam's comedic influences and how they've affected his style of comedy, we spoke about Sam mixing styles on stage and how his favourite comedians are Canadians. We delve into that a bit and try and pick at what it is about Canadian comedians that Sam likes and any synergy between Wales & Canada. We speak about Sam getting into comedy at the ripe old age of 17 and I wanted to know whether he'd been a bit bulled on the scene of if everyone was supportive of him. We spoke about his first gig at an open mic in a hotel along with a friend who also wanted to try it. We spoke about how Sam's sets have evolved over the year, going from trying to make audiences laugh to joking about the things that make him laugh. We speak then about comedy competitions, their pros and cons and how they can be useful for new comedians but difficult to take part in at the same time. Finally then we'd a chat then about Sam loving the challenge of keeping his jokes fresh so that both he and his audience don't get bored of the same jokes. We talk as well about Sam starting a new comedy night in Cardiff soon with YAY! comedy.
http://thecomedycast.com/ Today you'll be hearing from English stand-up comedian Stuart Edwards. I won't lie to you all, you're smart listeners but I had a bit of a man crush on Stuarts sumptuous ginger beard, but Stuart had some bad news for me. We followed that up with a quick chat about a recent role Stuart had played that involved trying to tempt kids with sweet from the back of a van. Stuart is based in the mighty Northern England stronghold of Newcastle and I'd a few questions about the area that needed answering, pease pudding and people punching police horses. We got onto comedy then and spoke about how and why Stuart got into comedy and his first gig. Stuart revealed that he'd been gigging the night before and it didn't exactly go very well so we delved into that topic, I wanted to know how a comedian picks himself up after such a gig and how it affects them and their confidence. Stuart's only been at comedy for two and a half years but we had a chat about the highs and lows that he's already experienced. Stuart speaks then about his love for East-Coast American comedians and how they've had a much larger influence on him that British comedians. We spoke about the prevalence of middle-of-the-road comedy that is a stable of British TV now and how it's a sad reflection of what's happening on the live circuit. We got a bit serious then and spoke about how some comedians can get away with using certain taboo words and how they skirt dangerously with crossing the line of what is and isn't acceptable. We talk about conspiracy theories and why Stuart doesn't see a need for covering his laptop camera when he's doing certain things. We speak too about The Super Dooper Awesome Foursome and why teaming up with other comedians and touring with them is so beneficial for all parties involved. Finally then we speak about Stuart's podcast, Analyze These, how he's currently preparing for the upcoming Glasgow Comedy Festival and how writing with other comedians can be pretty awkward.
http://thecomedycast.com Greg Dean is someone very well-known in the comedy world and if you've ever look for a book on stand-up comedy then chances are you've come across his book on stand-up; Step by Step to Stand-up Comedy. We started off by talking a bit about Greg heritage, coming from British stock, one side being Scottish, who still have a castle, and the other English. We spoke about Greg growing up in rural California and joining the theatre as a young man before literally running away with the circus at the age of 21. Then we chatted about Greg going onto becoming a successful, touring stand-up comedian before he turned his hand to teaching the craft of stand-up. Greg reveals the basics of his classes, the three mechanics as he calls them; the target assumption, connector and reinterpretation. Greg also speaks about being a member of the Internation Society of Humour Studies, being the only member that isn't part of academia. He also talks about reading as much academia as possible while researching his book and his contributions to the society. We talk then about the importance of comedians learning to read the reactions of their audiences so they can know how far they can take jokes, we speak too about nothing being off limits and about offending people from time to time and that comedians just have to get used to it. We chat then about whether anything still surprises him in comedy anymore or has it seen it all already? We speak more in depth about his book Step by Step to Stand-up Comedy and how it was a real labour of love that took 10 years to write and the struggle to find a publisher. And Greg tells two absolutely hilarious stories about previous students of his that had me roaring, you might be offended by if you are you're probably listening to the wrong podcast.
http://thecomedycast.com/ Lucy Roper came on my radar thanks to the Leicester Comedy that's running at the moment, we started off the podcast talking about Lucy's day job, she works in T.V. (wooooo) but she won't get your script commissioned. We spoke too about where Lucy's from, a wee town called Wirksworth, which isn't pronounced like it's spelled and that led to us talking about why the English has such a blatant disregard for how to pronounce their letters. We had a chat about the North/Side divide in England and where the line is between the two regions, is it Birnmingham, Leicester, or Watford, we spoke about how it's different for everyone and about how that divide is also present on the comedy scene. We got onto comedy then and spoke about Lucy having her first gig at a King Gong, something not for the faint-hearted but she wasn't gonged straight away and it went fairly well. We spoke then about why Lucy uses poetry in her set and she discussed how it actually gives her set a firm structure and how if a joke or two isn't going well she knows that a bit of poetry will get her back on track. We had a talk then about her 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Show, Three's a Crowd, Four's an Audience, a show she shared with fellow stand-up comedian and comedy writer, Charlotte Michael. We spoke about her experiences in Edinburgh and how she'd love to return. We spoke about Lucy's new show, Girlfriend Material that she'll have debuted the weekend before the podcast came out and that she hopes someone will propose marriage at her gig; not to her though. We speak about Lucy's love for poetry and we talk about some of the differences between what you learn in England compared to the poetry rammed down your neck in Ireland. Finally then we talk about the current health of the live stand-up comedy scene in England and the sense of togetherness and commendatory among the comedians on the scene.
http://thecomedycast.com/ Joseph Cullen is more than multi-talented, he's a actor, a stand-up comedian and has a pretty cool day job; working with Over The Limit Theatre as Artistic Director. He's a self-depreciating kind of lad, as you'll hear, but he's certainly got his head screwed on properly and greatness beckons I hope. We started off talking about how with a name like Joe Cullen he could be my next door neighbour back in Wexford and how he was almost Augustus Bojangles. I ran into Joe on Twitter where he's been promoting his stand-up show You Having Olaf? But first I wanted to ask him about his 2016 show Gentle Tim, a show about Timothy Threadwell, a name familiar to anyone that has seen Werner Herzog's documentary Grizzly Man. We spoke then about You Having Olaf? Joe stand-up show about his time spent working as a children's entertainer and the long lasting trauma it caused him to this very day. We have a wee chat too about how children are just pretty terrible overall and not worth the bother, Joe even predicts that his godson will one day grow up to be a serial killer, so you've been told. We changed subject then and spoke about Joe's job as Artistic Director with Over The Limit Theatre and what that involves, we spoke about the shows they're putting on at the ongoing Vault 2017 Festival in London; The Witches' Mark, Siren and The Lock In. We spoke too about the processes involved of going from script approval to production. Joe's also an actor and I was dying to ask him about working with the fantastic Les Enfants Terrible on their previous stage hit The Game's Afoot, an immersive who-done-it, Cluedo type of production. Finally then we spoke about Joe comedic influences growing up and what advice he'd give to people thinking of getting into comedy.
http://thecomedycast.com/ Tara Flynn will be well-known to anyone that has even the slightest interest in the Irish comedy scene and before hanging up her stand-up microphone to concentrate on writing was a regular face on the stand-up scene all over the world. We started off then talking about where Tara's from in Ireland and why she has a definite Irish accent but one that's hard to exactly place. Tara is well-known in Ireland too for appearing on approximately 20 million radio ads and when you have a voice as pure lovely as her it's easy to understand why she's in demand. But I had to ask her if she'd ever thought of getting into radio presenting. Lord knows Irish radio could do with a dose of humour on the airwaves. That led us on to talking about how to get projects from the pitch and script phase to actually getting it made and she revealed that she's currently working on a new book and a TV show. We spoke then about Tara's previous two books "You're Grand" and "Giving Out Yards" and about how a satirical look at Irish life has led her into taking a more serious approach to writing and to becoming, accidentally, involved in activism. Tara then spoke about why she gave up her career in stand-up after 10 years and why she feels that the big issues we're being faced with deserve more than just a comic response and how they should be tacked head on, protested against and goes into how direct action is needed. We returned to comedy then and spoke about how and why Tara got into comedy and how she had been an actor before embarking on a successful career in stand-up comedy. She spoke too about her undying love for improv comedy and that she still loves to performs with Dublin Comedy Improv. We spoke about Tara's regular articles over on the excellent Headstuff.org and they types of issues she writes about weekly. Finally then we spoke about Tara's activism regarding the Repeal the 8th movement in Ireland; a movement in Ireland asking for a referendum on abortion rights and about why she's proud of being a Social Justice Warrior.
http://thecomedycast.com/ Lorcan McGrane's a comedian that I really admire, a man doing his own thing and on his own terms. Unlike many comedians that attach themselves to a scene in a certain city he's doing his own thing living in rural County Monaghan, a border county in the north of the Republic of Ireland, but it's not Northern Ireland, even though it is in Ulster and has a border with Northern Ireland, and all the counties of Northern Ireland are in Ulster. It's all a bit mad, Monaghan's a bit like that. Anyway, we kicked off the interview by talking about the McGrane surname, Id' read it was derived from a Scotsman who left the Kingdom of Dalriada on the Scottish isle of Jura. Lorcan put me in my place though and informed me that the name comes from McGrainne and explains why that's a bit unusual. We spoke about growing up and living in Co. Monaghan with that constant feeling that everyone is watching everything that everyone does, all the time. We spoke about not falling into the trap of so-called 'edgy comedy' and how comedy promoters seems to love phrases like 'no holds barred' and 'anything goes' but you're not allowed be racist or sexist, and you're not anyway coz only scumbags are racist and sexist. Lorcan revealed that remaining real and truthful to yourself brings out the best in comedy. Lorcan told me about the time he was asked to do a set in front of the local GAA crowd, which didn't really go down as well as had been hoped. We chatted too about two of Lorcan's favourite subjects, geek culture and films, in particular superhero movies. The commonalities of teaching and stand-up comedy get a mention too, Lorcan is a lecturer in pop culture and has done his fair share of substitute teaching too so we chat about that and what they have in common. The rise of 'fake news' gets a mention too, it's only coming to the fore now but Lorcan tells us it's been around for a good while. We speak about some of Lorcan's alter egos on stage, Dermot H. Dark Materials, Livid Lorcan and Defective Deckard 237 and how exploring themes through new characters can open up a whole new take on things. We spoke then about the advantages of being a stand-up comedians while living in Co. Monaghan, not too far from the Dublin and Belfast scenes but still too far away from them to fell connected to them and how ploughing his own furrow suits Lorcan down to the ground. Finally then we spoke about Lorcan's comedic influences and his advice for new comedians.
http://thecomedycast.com/ W.T. Fallon is the author behind one of 2016's best works of political satire, Fail to the Chief, a book about a USA Presidential race based on the concept of reality TV. Under another pseudonym, V.R. Craft, she has also written a science fiction book called Stupid Humans. We stated off the interview by talking about pseudonyms and why the are an important literary device for authors; the importance of being able to create a new identity while writing in a different genre. We speak to about the importance of using critique groups when writing and taking onboard constructive criticism. We speak about W.T.'s work of satire Fail to the Chief, inp particular how she enjoying putting her Presidential hopefuls through menial jobs and lie detector tests. We spoke then about where political satire is these days and its importance, especially now that President Trump has somehow come to power and certainly seems to have it in for the media. That led us on to the modern phenomenon of fake news and how there's such a thin line between fake news and satire. We had a chat then about where W.T. is from, Arkansas and how it's not pronounced how it's spelt and why, for some reason, the state drink is cow's milk. We chat about W.T.'s literary and comedic influences growing up and how they've inspired her to write, that and getting sacked from a retail job which she describes as hellish. We speak too about W.T.'s other book under the V.R. Craft pseudonym, Stupid Humans a science fiction book about Humans fighting People. Finally then, we had a natter about W.T.'s love of comedy and how she desires to write jokes for performers and maybe even try stand-up comedy in the future.
http://thecomedycast.com Hello and welcome back to The Comedy Cast; today you'll be hearing from Summer Helene, one of Hollywood's rising stars. I won't lie, this is a bit of a scoop for The Comedy Cast, as you obviously know we concentrate on stand-up comedians and authors so when I was presented with the chance to talk to someone who works, not even works, who organises everything behind the camera I grabbed it. Summer has had an incredible career and she's only going to get bigger and bigger in Hollywood, the list of films she's been involved with is far too big to go into here but she mentions a few in the interview. She also mentions her new role as Studio Head which she'll be taking on during the year. We start off the interview talking about growing up in Australia and getting her first gig as a model with Victoria's Secret, and then moving to America to pursue a career in acting. We spoke about how she has to shoulder two nicknames; The Duchess of Hollywood and The Wicked Witch of The West Coast and how and why she got them. We spoke about how she handles diva-like characters and directors who 'get too big for their breeches'. Summer tells a great story about how Ron Jeremy was the one who convinced her to go from being an actor to working behind the camera. We also talk about how to pitch a film to get it made, who to speak to and how to get your pitch down. I even try my hand at a pitch and was pleasantly surprised with the reaction I got.
Today you'll be hearing from Drew Taylor. Drew hails from the valleys in south Wales, and while he's still quite new on the comedy scene there he's been getting rave reviews and really lighting up comedy gigs since he started plying his trade on the Welsh comedy scene. We started off by talking about Drew's duties on his partner's grandparents farm and how living in the country means doing your duty sometimes, and being from a rural background myself I know that only too well. Then we spoke a little about being from the Welsh valleys and got a wee geography lesson. We speak then about Drew's career as a teacher for kids with learning difficulties and how teaching is a great job to prepare you for stand-up comedy. We talk about how and why Drew got into comedy, and in particular we speak about Drew's specific style of observational humour. How he likes to take a different view than most people and where that comes from. We also chat about why Drew does some Mc-ing from time to time and how it comes in really handy when running his own shows and how he helps him to improve his jokes. We spoke about the local scene in Wales, how to get booked and the amount of talent on the current circuit there too. We have a chat about Drew dying on his arse the first time and how in particular it effected his girlfriend. Finally then, we spoke about how Drew works on improving his jokes and we delve into Drew's approach to writing material.
Welcome back to The Comedy Cast; today you’ll be hearing from Neil Snyder, an American stand-up comedian from Indiana. Welcome once again, let’s make 2017 even better here at The Comedy Cast, I’ve got loads planned and loads of guest already lined up so I’ll stop rambling and let’s get back to the podcasts. First … Continue reading The Comedy Cast Interview with American Stand-up Comedian Neil Snyder
This is a rebroadcast of the Robbie Bonham interview from October 6th. Today you'll be hearing from Irish comedian Robbie Bonham. Robbie will be well-known to anyone that follows the Irish comedy scene, he's been gigging for many years now and is renowned for his honesty and his dealing with personal issues while on stage. This was a real education for me; to speak to a comedian in a time of real transition, as someone who has to deal yet again with alcoholism, relationship difficulties and depression, while also re-entering education as an adult and trying to re-find his place in comedy. Robbie's a bit of a hero of mine as you'll hear in the podcast and I wish him well for the future and I hope that we can speak again on the podcast because I feel he has a lot more to say regarding comedy and I strongly feel that his comedic talents have been somewhat overlooked in Ireland, but hopefully in the years to come he'll finally get the recognition and praise he deserves.
This is a rebroadcast of the Ruth E. Cockburn interview that aired on September 8th. Today you'll be hearing from an English comedian from Blackpool, Ruth E. Cockburn (it's not pronounced as it's spelt, so behave). We had a right old natter about her former career as a substitute teacher, teaching things like sex education to teenagers, why she got into comedy, her influences, her Donald Trump song and her current project Love Letters from Blackpool which she plans to tour next year.
Today you'll be hearing from Irish stand-up comedian Sean Marshall. It being so close to Christmas we had to, at least, appear seasonal and have a natter about it, so we had a chat about Christmas in Dublin and the 12 Pubs of Christmas phenomenon that has swept the country like a wave of beer-vomit over the last few years. Then we got onto the main act and the reason you're listening; comedy. We spoke about how and why Sean got into it, seeing comedy as a challenging calling, even though happy in his work Sean decided comedy was something he had to have a go at. And in a complete act of the bizarre it turns out that Sean and I are not only from the same county in Ireland, we grew up around 10 miles from each other, but don't worry we don't spend too long on it. In his other life Sean is a bit of a science geek, well, not a bit of he's even got a Masters in it (in Science Communication) and had been hosting his own podcast called Science Chat. So we had a really illuminating talk about Science Communication and its place in the wider world and the uphill battle scientists must fight to keep the general population up to speed and educated. We spoke about Sean's influences growing up and of course our traditional closing question on advice for comedians.
Today you'll be hearing from an American stand-up comedian and actor Missy Grynkiewicz. We started off the interview talking about how she got the name Missy and how her previous career as an acting teacher and director helped her when she stated comedy. We spoke too about Missy's style of comedy and why she prefers to keep her comedy personal and relatable. We chatted about being from Maryland, how to pronounce it properly and how the whole state isn't anything like the Baltimore depicted in The Wire. We nattered about kids and why it's so much easier to love them when they're not actually around you. Then we chatted about Missy receiving a Grammy Nomination for her comedy album "Miss Representation" and the current state of comedy albums. We spoke about Missy receiving dickpics and how underneath it all it's actually quite touching and finally we spoke about "Days of Power" a movie starring Missy and Eric Roberts (of The Dark Knights, The Expendables and The Cable Guy fame) due for release in February 2017.
Today you'll be hearing from an American stand-up comedian Liysa Callsen. Liysa and I had a great chat about all things comedy. First we spoke about why she got into comedy and why, in some of her YouTube videos, you'll hear her saying "Improv saved her life." So we had a chat about changing direction in life at a time when most people are settled and finding true happiness through comedy. We talked too about Liysa's comedy coming from a very personal place, rather than ganging up on easy targets she believes in being truthful with the audience. We spoke about her influences growing up, she talked too about growing up the daughter of blind parents and marrying a blind man and all the comedy-gold material that provided her with. We also spoke about the new trend in the corporate world of using improve comedy for team building and motivational exercises. And finally we spoke about her latest undertaking; Women, Wine & Whiskey.
Today you'll be hearing from Welsh stand-up comedian Robin Morgan. Had a really insightful chat with Robin about comedy. Robin writes for the BBC Radio 4's The New Quiz, among others, so it was great to talk to him about the transition of going from writing his own material for his own shows to writing material both with other comedians and for them. We had a chat about Welsh comedy, moving up to London. Comedy advice from his parents, how he works on his stand-up routine and his flirtation with the Welsh Death Metal scene.
Today you'll be hearing an absolute belter of an interview with Scottish stand-up John Scott. John's such a talented comedian, mixing the big issues of the day with the normal banality of life all the while ensuring that there's a solid and warm connection with his audience. The interview was recorded the morning after Donald Trump won the Presidential election in America so, of course, that popped up. We also spoke about Brexit and the Scottish Independence Referendum, being a Scot living in Northern England. We spoke too about going back to college, comedy as a default defense mechanism, his influences, dying on his arse for the first time, his punk ethics and how he works on his act.
Today we'll be hearing from a new, up-and-coming Scottish stand-up comedian, Gary Faulds. Gary's passion for comedy is nothing but infectious, after the interview I felt like I could take on the world while giving it a big hug. I don't know if it's because he's new to comedy and still all starry-eyed with wonder and confidence but I loved chatting to him. I don't for a second really think that though, he's just a mega fellow, very funny and a really sound man. We had a chat about his life before comedy, his time in the British Army and returning to Glasgow to man the family business. We speak about his interesting family history and of course we natter about his comedy, his influences and why he got into the dog-eat-dog world of stand-up comedy.
Today you'll be hearing from an American stand-up comedian, Karen Rontowski. Had a great laugh with Karen, not only about comedy, but also about what she likes to do in her spare time; reading tarot cards and ghost hunting. Of course, we also have a chat about comedy; why Karen got into the business, her influences, clean comedy and her appearance on the David Letterman show.

I was in a car accident before our expected tour. I guess I'll podcast instead. Songs: "The Night That Paddy Murphy Died" by Marc Gunn from Irish Whiskey Pub Songs "The Vampire Club" by Voltaire from Boo Hoo Notes: Matt Hughe's Trivia Car accident and rental from Capps Rent-a-Car House Concert Tour & InConjunction Elysium with Voltaire, the Machine in the Garden, and Brobdingnagian Bards (music on myspace) The Night That Paddy Murphy Diedwords and music Johnny Burke (1851-1930), a Newfoundland songwriter Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forgetSome of the boys got loaded drunk, and they ain't got sober yet;As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gayO'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play And that's how they showed their respect for Paddy MurphyThat's how they showed their honour and their prideThey said it was a sin and a shame and they winked at one anotherNow every drink in the wakehouse went, the night Pat Murphy died Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner, pourin' out her griefWhen Kelly and his friends, came roaring down the streetThey crept into an empty room and a bottle of whiskey stoleThey placed the bottle on the corpse to keep the liquor cold At three o'clock in the morning, after emptying the jugDoyle rose up the coffin lid to see poor Paddy's mugHe stopped the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn't tell the timeAnd at a quarter after three, they argued it was nine. And everyone got merry, they didn't care for prayerMrs. Murphy said she'd wait 'til all the gang were thereOf all the sights I've ever seen that made me shiver with fearThey took the ice right off the corpse, and placed it on the beer Now everything was doin' fine, there was no ill at all'Til Finnegan told Callaghan, "You've got an awful gall."I thought that that might start a row, And sure enough it didFor Callaghan had carved his name upon the coffin lid Then the fight got fierce & strong, everyone was inSomeone knocked the whiskers off poor old Darby FlynnAnd Dirty Andy Burke was there, now whadda ya think he done?He placed the corpse right on its head, in the corner just for fun Someone hollered for the cops; they busted down the doorThey jumped upon ol' Paddy's back and they laid him on the floorThey knocked him twice behind the ears and they knocked him on the headWhen they jumped up from his back, sure they found out he was dead Mrs. Murphy started in, battled with them copsShe chased 'em, every one of them; she chased 'em several blocksA lovely time was had by all, eighteen in court were triedFor having caused a riot on the night Pat Murphy died At eight o'clock in the morning, the procession left the houseAnd everyone but poor ol' Mrs. Murphy was out sousedThey stopped on the way to the churchyard at the old Red Door SaloonThey staggered in at nine o'clock and didn't come out 'til noon Someone asked ol' Finnegan if anyone had died"Lou," says he, "I'm not quite sure, I just came for the ride."They started out for the graveyard, all holy and sublime,But found out when they got there, they'd left the corpse behind Oh the night that Paddy Murphy died, is a night I'll never forgetSome of the boys got loaded drunk, and they ain't got sober yet;As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gayO'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play
