What to listen for:“We're such dumb visual monkeys. We can't process information any other way except for visuals; whereas the dogs have their brain structured around scent.”Dr. Lindsay Waldrop, a Chapman University fluid dynamicist whose dissertation explored how crabs sniff odor out of water, has spent recent years turning that expertise toward dogs. Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, chat all things scent with her in this episode of K9 Detection Collaborative. Her central argument dismantles the "scent cone". Typically, handlers picture it as smooth and continuous, like an ice cream cone. However, real odor plumes are discontinuous, sheared into filaments by advection, the same way food coloring resists mixing into thick batter.A dog's nose can land dead center in a plume and find nothing, or catch a stray filament far from the source and read it as close.Lasers and cooled smoke, not hot smoke bombs that generate their own rising thermal current, are Waldrop's preferred way of making that invisible turbulence visible.Dr. Waldrop brings up a rebreather study (just one of a few eye-opening studies she cites throughout the conversation), which suggests live-find and cadaver dogs may be solving entirely different fluid problems. That's because a living person's breath gets lofted skyward while decomposition odor clings near the ground. That said, Dr. Waldrop's field has limits, which she fully acknowledges. For instance, full environmental modeling is often too slow to beat a simple flow-vis demo, and the real frontier is closer collaboration with the handlers who know which questions are worth asking. Tune into the next episode of K9 Detection Collaborative for part 2 of this fascinating conversation! Musikk: https://www.chosic.com/free-music/all/ Filaments by Scott Buckley | www.scottbuckley.com.au White Petals by Keys of Moon | https://soundcloud.com/keysofmoonAfter the Rain by Keys of Moon | https://soundcloud.com/keysofmoon Hosted on Acast. “Politics is the systematic organisation of hatreds.” — Henry Adams, quoted by Don Watson America is celebrating its 250th anniversary this July. In The Shortest History of the United States, Australian writer Don Watson has squeezed these 250 years into 60,000 words. Beginning with Mad King George, he ends with Mad King Donald. In between: the Puritan North, the plantation South, the miracle of the Constitution, the nightmare of slavery, the Civil War, the Gilded Age, two world wars, and the long arc from republic to empire that Americans have never quite admitted to themselves. Watson argues that America is a profoundly idea-driven place — unlike any other country on earth. The Bible and the Enlightenment documents of the revolution set the bar impossibly high. The Declaration of Independence, the preamble to the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, the Second Inaugural: these are documents of aspiration that no group of people could ever live up to. Which is precisely why the American moral minefield has never been cleared. The greatest American politicians — Lincoln, FDR — are those who managed to cobble together the most improbable coalitions. The most profound American contradiction — building a country of liberty on the backs of 600 slaves — is one they were always aware of but could never move on from, because the republic couldn't survive without the South. The republic always came first. Even Calhoun, ardently pro-slavery, said he would hang any man who tried to split it. Is Trump different? Watson doesn't think so — not fundamentally. Trump is a chip off the old American block: a huckster, a Roy Cohn-formed Queens opportunist, playing the same game of racial pot-stirring and imperial presidency that has always lurked beneath the surface. The US was founded out of the overthrow of a mad, tyrannical king. From one mad king to another. Six words. The shortest history of America. Five Takeaways • Eden with Savages to Remove: Watson begins in Australia, where he lives, to establish a point of contrast. Every new-world country has an appalling history of violence toward indigenous peoples. But America is different in one key respect: it found extraordinary land. Lewis and Clark head west and discover the Great Plains, cross the Rockies, see the great rivers, and return to the Mississippi. There is always somewhere to push west. It's Eden — with some savages to remove, who are easily accounted for in biblical terms. This is the first and most consequential American story: a cornucopia that licensed everything that came after. • The Bar Was Set Impossibly High: America is exceptional in being an idea-driven place. The Bible is there. The Enlightenment documents are there: the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Gettysburg Address, the Second Inaugural. These are documents of incredible aspiration that no group of people is ever going to live up to. “A more perfect union” drives them on and damns them simultaneously. Watson's formulation: America is a moral minefield precisely because it set the bar so high. Every infraction of that rhetorical overlay becomes a scandal. Tocqueville grasped it in the 1830s, having barely left the East Coast. His observations are more relevant now than when he wrote them — which means either he was a genius, or America hasn't fundamentally changed in two hundred years. Probably both. • The Republic Always Came First: A crucial distinction Watson draws: the Civil War was not fought to preserve democracy. It was fought to preserve the republic. Even Calhoun — ardently pro-slavery — said he would hang any man who tried to split it. Manifest destiny, Watson argues, lies latent within the founding: Jefferson and Madison both said the republic couldn't survive without pushing west. West takes you to the Pacific, and beyond. It's an empire from way back — but one that has never recognised itself as an imperial power. And a republic, Watson notes, that has always been an elected monarchy: the powers of the American executive exceed those of any existing European monarchy, and can be expanded, as recent events demonstrate, pretty much at will. • Trump Is a Chip off the Old Block: The question: is Trump different, or has he always existed? Watson's answer: he's a profoundly American individual, a huckster shaped by Roy Cohn and Queens, who is playing an old game. The US was founded out of the overthrow of a mad, tyrannical king. The “no kings” rallies of recent times are interesting precisely because the struggle against a monarchical presidency has been perpetual. Watson's Gatsby comparison: Trump is Gatsby without the romance — born to be a huckster, not a dreamer. Henry Adams wrote in the 1880s that politics is the systematic organisation of hatreds. That has not changed. Nor has the deep-sea-fish quality of ordinary American life, insulated from the world beyond its own provincial borders. • Mark Twain, FDR, and the Miracle of Cohesion: Watson's favourite American: Mark Twain. Beautiful voice. The irony. Huckleberry Finn as a seminal novel. Anti-imperialist in the end. Got his politics pretty much right. Among presidents: FDR, who saved and modernised the United States, who believed political leaders can't afford to stand still — you have to stay ahead of the regressive and self-interested forces. Watson's broader verdict: American history is a miracle of cohesion. You can read it as wild turbulence, or you can marvel that it holds together at all. Filaments of goodwill. Recognition of the necessity of holding together. Always threatening to fall apart. Never quite does. About the Guest Don Watson is an Australian author and screenwriter, former speechwriter to Prime Minister Paul Keating. He is the author of The Shortest History of the United States (The Experiment, 2026), American Journeys, Recollections of a Bleeding Heart, and many other books. He lives in Melbourne. Many times in your writing you reach a point where things just peter out and you can't seem to move beyond. We're not really talking about a traditional writer's block here though, it's more like running out of puff, "out of steam" so to speak… You get your story and or characters to a point and then "what now?". Maybe it's because the content of the current story no longer fits with the script you were working on because too many interesting things got added in as you were creating the pages, but now it's all falling apart because the story as it is now is too different from the planned one. Maybe it's because you lose enthusiasm for the current story. It could be that you've seen new trends and styles and fun things you want to include but can't fit them into your current story so you get tired of it. Maybe you don't have a script and can't really work out what to do next. It could be that you find a plot hole and know you'll need a rewrite to move any further. Or maybe you're starting a new chapter but can't work out how to do that. There are many reasons to run out of puff and we chatted about some ways around that in the cast. Again, this is NOT about blocks which are not really related to the writing and are more just psychological. One of the ways was to limit your scope right down: just focus on a few characters in a much more limited set of circumstances or maybe even the point of view of a single character and proceed from what interests and concerns them, what they like, need, and care about, what they experience etc. That means there are less things to worry about, it's easier to crystallise in your mind where you should go with things, and it's also way easier to get your audience to relate to and identify with what you're doing. Another key method is to rely on structure if you can. If you have an old script and old thumbnails and all that stuff, try and see if you can hammer your way back to it. You might not be able to because of later story changes or you may not even have a script, but if you do and you CAN go back to it, it's worth it even if you feel it's a bit old and boring, because it's all planned out already and when you move past the dull stuff you can write more interesting stuff into your script later. Finally another trick is to just jump to another scene completely. It could be a time jump, like two days later or earlier, or even a flashback. You can use dreams, visions, or a recounted story by a character. You can also jump to parallel scenes with other characters in other places, or simply a different character point of view… What are some run-out-off-steam moments you've had and how do you get beyond them? I wanna hear Guys full nerd answer :) Jeff I keep hearing conflicting augments about wear from abrasives filaments. I run all diamonback nozzles and they have did extensive testing on abrasives. They say all the wear happens at the tip of the nozzle from the pressure being reduced from a larger diameter to a smaller orifice(nozzle size). That's why they have a diamond tip. I understand Bowden tubes wear out but what I want to know is. Do you think the heartbreak and extruder gears will wear from printing abrasives? What are your thoughts on this? Tommy

#1267. March 6 2025, Creating Beauty. Filaments conveying vital frequency
Last month we stocked some fun filament shapes, like snowflakes (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6093) or unicorns (https://www.adafruit.com/product/6094) these are easy to use: simply power with 3V like any LED and they glow with a tungsten-eque warmth (but without the 120VAC or burning heat). This week we got some samples of the same COB 'chip on board' filaments but in letters and numbers! Sure we'll have to stock 36 SKUs, but how fun would it be to display custom words? You can drive these in series - 3V total with about 30mA per filament - or parallel - 30mA and 3V * n where n is the number of letters in a row. This will be our final edition from Australia. As many of you may know, I will return to the UK on October 11th after spending ten years here. I am excited to rejoin the electronic music scene in Europe and the UK. The next few weeks will be quite busy for me: I will move into a short-term rental, purchase some wheels, and then search for a permanent home with my daughter and son-in-law. This Episode's Questions: It seems to me that the 3D printer market is going to split into two types; the enclosed ecosystem (Apple) and the open source type (Android). Companies like Bambu want the enclosed ecosystem to build appliances that maximize profit potential. I'm OK with that because there is good value to consumers for products that “just work” and you guys clearly like your P1P's and P1S's. My only problem with that is the loss of privacy and control to Bambu's network. It's a no-go for me and like Nathan, I work offline and I will never own a machine that requires online access to operate. I got the impression there is a way around that but Bambu makes it difficult. Could you expand on what workarounds there are for people like me who don't want to drink the Koolaid? James Hello! New listener, and first time writer. I have an Ender 3, an Ender 3 v2, and a friends CR-10 smart. I was wondering what your recommendations would be to upgrade one of the Enders to print either TPU, or ABS/ASA. I could go either direction really! Love the show! Leo I heard a guy asking about building. Voron and you guys recommend he go with bambu. But he can go with troodon which is a pre built voron. I provided a link. Brad And Nathan dispels some 3D Printing superstitions

Let's talk about sebaceous filaments, the common misconceptions surrounding them, and why they keep coming back. We will also explore the root causes and how to address these issues to achieve long-term results. Many people mistake sebaceous filaments for blackheads and try to remove them by using tweezers or other methods. However, this can damage the skin. The presence of sebaceous filaments and blackheads is often linked to the overproduction of sebum. This production is regulated by a hormone called androgens, which can increase during puberty, pregnancy, or other hormonal imbalances. So, how do we address the root cause of sebaceous filaments? One way is to regulate and balance our androgen levels through dietary changes. Consuming foods high in vitamin A, D, and omega-3 fatty acids while reducing the intake of seed oils found in processed foods can help decrease sebum production. Another way to reduce and balance androgen levels is through intermittent fasting and the keto diet, which helps lower insulin levels. High levels of insulin can also contribute to the overproduction of sebum. Additionally, zinc deficiency has been linked to raised sebum production. Consuming zinc-rich foods such as shellfish and red meat can help address this deficiency. Managing stress levels is also essential, as chronic stress can deplete our zinc levels. This Episodes Questions: Hey guys, so, I wanted some advice. I've been looking to get a Bambu Lab printer but I'm wondering if it's worth the jump from the P1S to the X1C. For me, I run a small print farm for a vendor fair/craft show business. I print primarily PLA, PETG, and TPU but I enjoy enclosed printers so the P1P and A1 are out of the picture for me. I've watched review after review and some people love the P1S, some don't, especially because of the screen and the camera. Is the camera that bad and is the screen that big of a headache? Do I spend the extra money for a better camera, LiDar, hardened steel extruder/nozzle, and touchscreen? Or am I better off buying a P1S and saving myself money? Braden For the “Pro-sumer” and light industrial users the possibility of using more technical plastic materials, metals and continuous carbon fiber filament is very exciting and I'm looking forward to the inevitable trickle down effect from the more serious users like aerospace and automotive manufacturing. I would love to see more content in that direction but are any of you guys particularly interested in those higher capability machines or do you prefer to stay strictly in the hobby arena? Also, which of the more advanced 3D printing technologies do you think will be most likely to be affordable to the average consumer first? James Hi guys, I am currently running an E5S1 and E3v2. I have a potential customer that requires the product to be temp stable in a hot vehicle and am torn between: - Qidi smart3 - Qidi Xmax3 Plus - Prusa mini in enclosure - Bambu P1S - Ratrig V-Minion - Crealiy K1 - Voron v0 I am currently spending 30min or so getting my print chamber to 45c with the E5S1 in the tent enclosure thingy. Any recommendations? Is a small Ratrig or Voron farm a good idea?? Jeremiah

Few sights in the universe are more impressive than a dying star. The star expels its outer layers of gas, leaving only its small, hot core. Radiation from the core energizes that gas, causing it to glow in a rainbow of colors. It can look like a cat's eye, a butterfly, an hourglass, or many other shapes. Such an object is known as a planetary nebula. One of the closest and brightest is the Helix Nebula. It's about 650 light-years away, in Aquarius. It looks like a set of concentric rings. Filaments of cooler gas radiate out from the center like the spokes of a bicycle wheel. The spokes are behind “knots” of gas and dust that are as big as the solar system. The Helix is shaped like a barrel, and we happen to be looking through the top of it. It spans almost three light-years. The star's core is becoming a white dwarf. Now, its temperature is about 200,000 degrees. It produces enormous amounts of ultraviolet light. It zaps atoms of gas in the nebula, making them glow. Each element shines a different color. Hydrogen and nitrogen are pink and red, while oxygen is green. The color palette helps us understand what was happening inside the star before it began exhaling its dying breath — forming the beautiful Helix Nebula. The Helix is visible through binoculars and small telescopes. Tonight, it's in the south after nightfall. It's about half way between the planet Saturn and the bright star Fomalhaut, to Saturn's lower left. Script by Damond Benningfield Support McDonald Observatory

An Electromagnetically driven, plasma universe does not rely on secular fantasies of Dark Matter. The Universe in a Pinch: The formation of stars, and even galaxies may be problematic for old earth, secular cosmology. But the Setterfield Cosmology has a quite reasonable explanation of how stars and galaxies could have formed. *We want You to Join Us: It's the final Friday of our Telethon! There was a big ska revival in the UK from around 2000 to 2005. Pook was playing music back then, but when the scene started to crater, he kept on playing. He would even fully realize his vision of combining extreme metal with ska, which you can hear in his groups Beat The Red Light and Redeemon. We're talking Sepultura and Lamb of God style metal mixed with ska. Pook also runs a record label called Pookout Records. It started as a means to distribute records into the UK but has since become a proper record label and he's worked with bands like Andy B and the World, Filthy Militia, Glory Hunters and Roshambo. On today's episode, we chat with Pook about his many bands, which also includes The Filaments and Lightyear. He tells us about recording "Send In The Clowns" with Beat The Red Light and finally realizing his metaliSKA vision, hearing The Best of the Worst and finding kindred spirits across the pond, and the warm up techniques he does before screaming. Big face, little face, big face, little face.He also tells us the infamous Lightyear story that involves Ice-T's band Body Count and the band dressing up in a horse outfit. They were told, "Ice-T is not amused." Support the show
Welcome back to our weekend Cabral HouseCall shows! This is where we answer our community's wellness, weight loss, and anti-aging questions to help people get back on track! Check out today's questions: Shirleyta: I have suffered for BMS for 1.5 years.. what should I do, Doctor? What kind of specific Doctor do I need . Thank you for your kind attention. Fiona: Scans show fatty liver but I don't consume any alcohol, my diet is organic and plant-based with no processed foods. How is this possible? Anonymous: Hi there! Firstly, thank you for all the knowledge and wisdom you share! I have been working on healing my gut for about 3 months now. I have noticed some changes like more energy, less cravings, better sleep. However, I am still really struggling with my skin. My skin periodically gets this sort of rash that looks like sebaceous filaments and water retention. I know sebaceous filaments are natural but they are not always this prominent. Are there foods that cause this? Also, I have noticed that i have a sensitivity to lectins and a lot of the protein sources on the Dr. Cabral detox are a bit high in lectins(beans, legumes, chia seeds). I listened to your podcast on eliminating them for a while if one is sensitive and then reintroducing them later on. How can I modify the detox so that I still get enough protein while also avoiding lectins? Thank you so much in advance! Moriah: I was just listening to your podcast and you said something word for word what I said to myself a year ago… “I won't take antibiotics unless I'm dying” Last year, antibiotics caused me to catch a c diff infection and I've never been so sick, the antibiotics they gave me to cure the c diff, didn't even work and I got a second infection, I literally felt like I could have died. A local naturopath finally helped me heal my gut and repair my issues. Just wanted to say thank you for speaking out about the danger of unnecessary use of antibiotics Lisa: Is it ok to use cbd oil while pregnant? I have been using cbd oil for 2-3 years to help me sleep at night and I can't sleep well without it. Thoughts on taking it during pregnancy ? Anonymous: Hi. I have been listening to your podcast for a while and it has really been helping a lot with my health issues. In numerous podcast episodes, you have mentioned that keto and long intermittent fasting isn't good for female hormones. I have extreme insulin resistance and I have had it for years. I have tried keto with vegetables for about 3 weeks now along with intermittent fasting of 16 hours in order to try to reduce my insulin resistance, hair loss at temples, and skin rash. However, i seem to be gaining more weight around the belly even though I have not been consuming any carbs other than low glycemic vegetables. What could be causing this? I thought that belly fat especially love handles were caused by high insulin? Also, what method would you suggest for healing extreme insulin resistance for a female? Thank you so much in advance!
