For sailors travelling under canvas, the doldrums were among the most feared waters on Earth. Ships could remain trapped for days or weeks beneath an unmoving sky as water spoiled, sickness spread and frightened crews searched for supernatural explanations. This episode explores the dark folklore of the dead calm, including wind-calling rituals, cursed “Jonahs,” Neptune's equator ceremonies, phantom ships, the albatross and the terrifying delirium known as calenture. The BOOKBY US A COFFEEJoin Sarah's new FACEBOOK GROUPSubscribe to our PATREONEMAIL us your storiesJoin us on INSTAGRAMJoin us on TWITTERJoin us on FACEBOOKVisit our WEBSITEResearch Links:https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/doldrums.htmlhttps://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/tradewinds.htmlhttps://archive.org/download/legendssuperstit00bass/legendssuperstit00bass.pdfhttps://archive.org/download/cu31924079619411/cu31924079619411.pdfhttps://ora.ox.ac.uk/objects/uuid%3A53134a1e-1d2f-4d88-909f-f3d840702a8e/files/rtd96k375nhttps://www.brigantineneptun.com/knowledge-base/king-neptune-ceremony-line-crossinghttps://archive.org/download/crossinglinetale00lyde/crossinglinetale00lyde.pdfhttps://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43997/the-rime-of-the-ancient-mariner-text-of-1834https://www.britannica.com/science/calenturehttps://www.britannica.com/place/horse-latitudeshttps://bowcreektoanatahan.wordpress.com/the-sails-hang-dead-a-history-of-the-doldrums/https://blackthornandstone.com/2020/05/21/here-be-monsters-sailor-stories-nautical-folklore/Thanks so much for listening, and we'll catch up with you again on tomorrow.Sarah and Tobie xx"Spacial Winds," Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com)Licenced under Creative Commons: By Attribution 4.0 Licencehttp://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/SURVEY Hosted on Acast. The most famous ghost ship in history never had steaming cups of tea, half-eaten meals, or a ticking clock left behind. Those details were invented by a young Arthur Conan Doyle years after the fact. The real mystery is stranger. In 1872, the Mary Celeste was discovered adrift in the Atlantic Ocean—her cargo intact, her provisions untouched, and every member of her crew, including the captain's wife and two-year-old daughter, gone without a trace. Tonight, we separate myth from history and uncover what likely happened aboard one of the greatest maritime mysteries ever recorded. I don't remember when I started responding "THANK YOU" to guests saying, "Good question," but E Conner said it so often I felt obliged to explain the bit. I was slightly humbled by their admission it's an organizing trick for when you don't have an answer and not the turbo validation I interpret it to be. Fortunately, I don't need permission to self-aggrandize, and I have no plans to retire the bit any time soon. It's a silly moment in the midst of a really pleasant and sometimes intense conversation about E's punk rock radicalization, surprising (to me) orientation toward religion, and what it feels like to be part of an activist/artistic community in the Bay Area for 20 years. We talk about: punk roots, tenant organizing, Black Liberation Army pamphlets, Maximum Rocknroll, traveling as a homeless teenager, the Ghost Ship fire, environmental grief, turning self activity into collective activity. This Is Your Afterlife is made possible by listeners like you on Patreon. **Discussion begins at 4:50**Picture a ship drifting silently across the Atlantic Ocean. Its sails are raised. It's cargo is untouched. There are no signs of violence, no evidence of a struggle, and yet every single person on board has vanished without a trace. In December of 1872, the merchant brigantine Mary Celeste was discovered adrift between the Azores and Portugal. The ship itself appeared remarkably seaworthy. Food and water were still stocked. Personal belongings remained behind. Even the crew's valuables were untouched. But Captain Benjamin Briggs, his wife, his young daughter, and the rest of the crew were nowhere to be found. For more than 150 years, the mystery of the Mary Celeste has captivated sailors, historians, and conspiracy theorists alike. Was it piracy? Mutiny? A sea monster? Alien abduction? Or was the truth something even more unsettling?Send us Fan MailSupport the showTheme song by INDA

Beneath the dark waters of Lake Erie lies a region filled with unexplained disappearances, UFO sightings, ghost ships, strange creatures, and paranormal encounters that have baffled witnesses for generations. Often compared to the infamous Bermuda Triangle, the Lake Erie Triangle has become one of North America's most overlooked paranormal hotspots. Sailors, fishermen, pilots, and shoreline residents have reported strange lights hovering above the water, unidentified submerged objects (USOs), phantom vessels appearing in dense fog, and mysterious creatures rising from the depths of the lake. Are these simply legends and folklore, or is something truly unexplained happening in the Great Lakes region? During this fascinating paranormal discussion, Jennifer shares the research behind her book and explores historical accounts, eyewitness testimony, and regional legends surrounding Lake Erie. The conversation examines famous UFO encounters over the Great Lakes, reports of military aircraft tracking unidentified objects, and stories of missing time experienced by witnesses who encountered strange phenomena near the water. Listeners will also hear three chilling eyewitness stories involving glowing objects emerging from the lake, encounters with mysterious figures in the fog, and a frightening case of lost time connected to unexplained lights along the shoreline. These firsthand accounts raise questions about the true nature of the phenomena reported throughout the Lake Erie Triangle. The episode also explores theories involving electromagnetic anomalies, interdimensional portals, paranormal hotspots, residual hauntings, time slips, cryptid sightings, and the possibility that Lake Erie serves as a gateway for something beyond our understanding. Could there be a connection between UFO activity, ghostly apparitions, lake monster legends, and unexplained disappearances? Jennifer discusses why so many seemingly unrelated paranormal events may actually be connected. If you enjoy stories about UFOs, aliens, lake monsters, ghost ships, haunted locations, missing persons mysteries, cryptids, supernatural encounters, and unexplained phenomena, this episode is a must-listen. Whether you're a believer, skeptic, paranormal investigator, or simply fascinated by mysteries, the secrets of the Lake Erie Triangle are sure to leave you questioning what may be lurking beneath the surface. Join Joe and Jennifer Shortridge as they explore one of the most mysterious regions in North America and uncover the legends, folklore, and eyewitness accounts that continue to make the Lake Erie Triangle one of the most intriguing paranormal destinations in the world. The ghost ship Jenny is one of those eerie sea tales that gives you chills. In 1840, a whaling ship discovered Jenny frozen solid in the Drake Passage, near Antarctica. The crew was found perfectly preserved, still frozen in their last moments, with the captain's log detailing their desperate struggle against the cold. They had been trapped in ice since 1823, drifting for 17 years. To this day, the story of Jenny serves as a haunting reminder of the ocean's unforgiving nature. Learn more about your ad choices. The 5- masted schooner Carroll A. Deering was discovered abandoned on January 31, 1921, hard aground on the treacherous Diamond Shoals off Cape Hatteras. All crew members had vanished without a trace, leaving behind a fully set table in the galley, personal belongings, and signs that the vessel had been recently occupied, but with its lifeboats missing. The ship's logs and navigational equipment were also gone. Despite investigations by the United States Coast Guard and speculation ranging from piracy to mutiny or even supernatural causes, no definitive explanation was ever found. The fate of the ship's crew remains a mystery. This episode was written by Madeleine Gassin. Edited and produced by Rich Napolitano. Original theme music is by Sean Sigfried. In January 1921, a five-masted schooner was discovered run aground off the coast of North Carolina with no crew aboard and no clear signs of struggle. Personal belongings, navigation equipment, and the ship's lifeboats were missing, leaving investigators with more questions than answers and a trio of cats, which had been the only signs of life aboard the abandoned ship. Rumors of piracy, mutiny, Russian conspiracies, and even supernatural involvement quickly spread, but no definitive explanation ever emerged, earning the wreck the enduring title of “The Ghost Ship of the Diamond Shoals.”SOURCES Simpson, Bland (2002) Ghost Ship of Diamond Shoals. A dive into Ghost Ship was more enjoyable that we anticipated as we realised this is an over hated gem in the world of 2000's horror movies. Steller casting across the board with some now very famous faces making early career appearances. Effects hold up better than a lot of more modern films for the most part. This film was a real delight. Not to mention the parallels we managed to draw between this, The Shining and Event Horizon or all the interactive features that fill the episode. This is (as always) one not to be missed.
At the bottom of the Great Lakes, the dead don't disappear. They stay exactly where they were left. Perfectly preserved. Suspended in the dark. Sometimes drifting. Sometimes… moving. For hundreds of years, ships have vanished into these waters, taking their crews, their stories, and something else with them. And every now and then, the lakes remind us that none of it is truly gone.
