Today my guest is the brilliant, Jordan. Sharpiro. Jordan Shapiro, PhD is a globally celebrated American thought leader. He's senior fellow for the Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop , and Nonresident Fellow in the Center for Universal Education at the Brookings Institution . His Forbes' column (2012-17) on global education, learning through digital play, kids and culture was read by over 5 million people around the world. He is an international speaker and consultant whose fresh perspective combines psychology, philosophy, and economics in unexpected ways. His book, The New Childhood: Raising Kids To Thrive in a Connected World (Little, Brown Spark 2018) changed the cultural conversation about parenting and screen time. In his upcoming book, Father Figure: How to be a Feminist Dad (Little, Brown Spark 2021), Shapiro offers a norm-shattering perspective on fatherhood, family, and gender essentialism. This thoughtful exploration of dad-psychology—presented from an archetypal perspective—challenges our familiar assumptions about the origins of so-called traditional parenting roles. There are hundreds of books on parenting, but when it comes to books about parenting identity, rather than the nuts and bolts of raising children, nearly all are about what it's like to be a mother. Father Figure fills that gap. It teaches dads how to embrace the joys of fathering while guiding toward an image of manliness for the modern world. Shapiro has worked an adviser and strategist to the United States Air Force, helping Air University's eSchool develop pedagogical practices that promote sophisticated 21st century “habits of mind.” He created Thomas Edison State University's flagship online course, “Critical Thinking with Video Games,” an interdisciplinary learning experience designed for adult learners, that draws connections between the classic texts of the Western academic tradition and the narrative and mechanic components of today's most popular video games. During the week, you can find him in the classroom at Temple University, where he teaches in the Intellectual Heritage Program and developed the online version of the university's core curriculum. Asked to list his favorite texts to teach, he doesn't hesitate, “Plato's Republic and Freud's Civilization and its Discontents. It's amazing to see young adults discover how old ideas can remain so relevant even in such a new world.” Shapiro is an expert adviser to the World Economic Forum, and a participant in China's Taihe Civilization Forum. He's also a member of the academy that judges the Varkey Foundation's Global Teacher Prize. And he serves on the advisory board of the exclusive global think tank, Symi Symposium, led by former Greek prime minister George Papandreou. He regularly travels around the world, delivering keynote addresses at international conferences hosted by organizations like UNESCO's Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (MGIEP). A Philadelphia native, Jordan is a graduate of Friends Select School, a small Quaker college preparatory school. He earned his bachelor's degree at Bard College, where he studied closely with Lithuanian filmmaker/artist Adolfas Mekas and Judaism/religion scholar Jacob Neusner. He earned his doctorate in depth psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, CA, where he studied phenomenology with legendary American philosopher Edward S. Casey (former president of the American Philosophical Association). Before graduate school, Jordan dreamed of becoming a chef. His first job, as a teenager, was as a prep-cook at Jack's Firehouse, a long-time Philadelphia institution. He quickly worked his way up to the position of head line cook. Next, he took a gap year between high-school and college, to work with celebrity chef Bobby Flay at New York City's Mesa Grill and Mesa City restaurants. After college, Jordan became owner/operator of the Reading Terminal Market's Down Home Diner. In 2008, he sold his stake in that business to shift his focus to education and public service. At parties, Jordan has been known to humble-brag about winning the $10,000 grand prize on Television's America's Funniest People when he was thirteen years old. Along with his best friend, he sang an original song called “What Part of the Pig Does the Hot Dog Come From? ” Find out more about Jordan on his website https://www.jordanshapiro.org And you can find some fun stuff he posts on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/jordosh/ I have so much gratitude for everyone who has been listening to the Joyfull Parenting Podcast and joining the community of supporters at https://www.patreon.com/user?u=40232525 ! Philippians 4:10-23 (NIV) Read by: Joanna Wong The circumstances of Paul's writing to the Church in Philippi will help us capture the depth of the final words of this letter. It's subtle, but careful reading shows us that after a long while Epaphroditus shows up with gifts from Philippi while Paul is in prison. Imagine being locked away, alone, and then all of a sudden you hear your name being called by the guards and then you see your the face of a beloved friend come to care for you. What do you say to friends like that, who see what they have as yours? Who come to your aid, who take every opportunity to show you care? And still even when this isn't the case, Paul says that he's able to endure any circumstance through Christ's strength. This passage comes as an encouragement and a challenge in the year 2020. ----------REFLECT---------- 1. What Part of this passage encouraged you most? 2. How does Paul's gratitude towards the Philippians challenge you when you consider the ways that others have met your needs? And how might you, like the Philippians, meet the needs of a friend today? 3. To be content in every circumstance. There is so much in our lives that is working against contentment, drawing us to make our desires into necessity and our necessities into commodities. Where do you struggle to be content? Ask the Spirit to speak into that now. ----------GO DEEPER---------- Bible Project Podcast: New Testament Letters >> Bible Project Video: New Testament Letters: Historical Context >> Bible Project Video: New Testament Letters: Literary Context >> Bible Project Video: Philippians >> ----------CONNECT---------- Find an InterVarsity Chapter >> Start an InterVarsity Chapter >> Learn More >> --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/dailyread/message

In this episode of Starting Now I'm joined by Grammy nominated Singer/Songwriter and Producer, Chris Sernel. Since the early 2000s Chris's passion for branding and marketing has set him apart in the music industry. Along with being massively talented, Chris will out hustle anyone, believing that hustle is just as important as talent. Chris was ahead of his time when he went against conventional wisdom to start his own record label and when he used merch and creative marketing to create a successful band that was shrouded in mystery and perplexed the major record labels. And that only scratches the surface, Chris has gone on to write and produce for artists like Cee Lo Green (Grammy nominated), Weezer (Grammy nominated), Jason Derulo, movies like Lego Batman and Lego Ninjago, TV Shows, video games, and commercials. Chris is a great example of someone who's recognized the importance of standing out and has found ways to do so through creativity and hard work. I hope you find his story as inspiring as I do. This is something God laid on my heart a while ago, and I truly believe it’s going to have a huge impact. Don’t worry, we’re still going to help you pursue your dreams, build your business, and reach your goals. But we’re also going to help you with your life. Because let’s face it: You don’t have a business life and a home life. You have ONE life. And that’s what this show’s all about. In each episode, I’m going to give you everything you need to help you break through limitations that are holding you back and keeping you stuck. And once you step outside that box, you might just surprise yourself. I'm really excited to see what new possibilities this opens for you, what God might be doing in your life, and what He has to say. I’ll be here to point you toward truth, perspective and the motivation you need to live the life God’s calling you to—whether that’s making money doing what you love or something completely different. Y’all, I’m so excited to see what God’s going to do in and through you as you take this step of faith with us. The Real Way to Build Confidence Real life-change happens when you work on yourself from the inside out. That’s why I want to introduce you to the framework I use to help others do just that. It’s called the Core of Confidence. This framework is made up of five stages that help you build confidence in yourself and the God who created you. Let’s take a look: Start with your spirit. Protect your mind. Take care of your body. Work on your relationships. Work on your resources—your time, money and energy. How Do You Work on Yourself with Rachel Cruze Y’all, I’m so excited because one of my best friends is here to talk about one of our favorite topics: working on yourself. Rachel Cruze is a #1 New York Times bestselling author and host of The Rachel Cruze Show. We covered a lot of ground in our conversation, but here are some of my favorite takeaways: What it looks like to invest in yourself and grow as a person How to be intentional with your time Why taking time to work on yourself isn’t selfish “I know that I’m such a better mom, I’m such a better wife, I’m such a better friend when I’m functioning out of the whole person of who I am.” — Rachel Cruze What Part of Your Life Can You Control Many of you know that I’m really big on journaling. I think it’s so powerful when you take the ideas in your head and the dreams in your heart and get them down on paper. When I journal, I end up writing down thoughts and feelings I didn’t even know I had. And more than that, it’s an opportunity for God to show up and lead. So, let’s jump in and spend some time journaling about today’s Scripture. Galatians 6:4–5 (NIV) says, “Each one should test their own actions. Then they can take pride in themselves alone, without comparing themselves to someone else, for each one should carry their own load.” Work through these questions below, taking the time to pause, pray and journal: When you try to fix others, how do you feel? How do you feel when you think about controlling you? Which area of your life are you most excited to work on? Which area of your life are you nervous to work on? What does it mean to you to do the creative best with your own life?

This Might Surprise You! Before Starting The First Sprint Alex works as the Scrum Product Owner of a new software development project. One of his first tasks is to assess and find out requirements to deliver business value his client is looking for. He needs to make sure that his client will get the correct software to achieve tangible business results. He writes down the essential use cases and discusses them with the architects, client representatives, and other stakeholders from IT and business units. After assembling the high-level use-cases and requirements, he writes them into the Scrum Product Backlog and initiates an estimation and prioritization session with the Scrum Team. As a result of this session, all items in the Scrum Product Backlog get an initial rough estimate and priority. During those sessions, Anna, the Scrum Master, ensures that everyone speaks the same language. So, the Scrum Product Owner, the Scrum Team Members, and their stakeholders arealigned with the anticipated goals. So they have an adequate understanding of potentially new concepts for them, such as Use Case, Backlog, Sprint, and so on. And most importantly, the Scrum software development and delivery process is correctly applied in the store. Now Alex, the Scrum Product Owner, begins to break down the high-level requirements into the first draft of smaller-grained user stories. With this list, he then calls for the first Sprint Planning Meeting. Sprint 1 – Day 0 During the Sprint Planning Meeting, Alex presents the Scrum Product Backlog items from the highest priority to the lowest. The Scrum Team asks and clarifies open questions. For each item, the team discusses if they have enough 25 capacity and the required know-how to develop and deliver it. The Scrum Team needs to ensure that all required human and technical resources are in place before the start of the Sprint. They need to confirm that all prerequisites and dependencies are fulfilled, which could be critical to delivering certain software features successfully. During Sprint Planning Meeting (What-Part), the Scrum Team commit to complete the user stories 1,2,3,6,7 and 8 until the end of the Sprint. So these user stories are now moved from the Scrum Product Backlog to the Sprint Backlog. The user stories 4 and 5 cannot be accomplished in this Sprint, as some prerequisite technical infrastructure is not yet in place. After the What-Part of the Sprint Planning Meeting, Anna, the Scrum Master, calls the Scrum Team to drill down how the team is going to implement the committed user stories (How-Part). The emerging tasks during the How-Part of the Sprint Planning Meeting are written down on the cards, and the team store them into the Sprint Backlog. Now all members of the Scrum Team are ready to select a task to begin to work on. Sprint 1 – Day 1 In the morning, the whole team gets together for their Daily Scrum Meeting. Everyone gives a brief and concise statementabout what he or she has done so far, updates the estimates of remaining work on the cards of the Sprint Backlog. Everyone tells what he or she is planning to do today, and reveals if there are any impediments which hinder them from processing any tasks. Today one of the Scrum Team members, Melinda, informs the Scrum Team that she has a problem with the license of the integrated software development environment she is using. Anna, the Scrum Master, checks if other team members have the same problem and confirms that she’ll take care of this impediment after the meeting. After about 15 minutes of this Daily Scrum Meeting, everyone goes back to work. After this meeting, Anna updates the Sprint Burn down Chart to visualize the progress of work during this Sprint. Then she calls the software vendor, orders the missing license, and delivers it to Melinda. Introduction to Scrum A Real World Example (Case Study ) across various Scrum Phases and Sprints Sprint 1 – Day 2 In the morning, the whole team gets together again for their Daily Scrum Meeting. In the afternoon, a member of the Scrum Team, James, has uncertainty about the expected outcome of one of the user stories. He calls Alex, Scrum Product Owner, and they discuss this user story to ensure that James properly understands it. After Alex gets informed and confident about how to proceed with this user story, he continues working on its implementation. Sprint 1 – Day 6 The days starts again with the Daily Scrum Meeting of the team. Anna, the Scrum Master, notices this morning that the meeting tends to take more than 15 minutes. The Scrum Team members are engaging with a discussion regarding the optimization of some database queries. Anna reminds the team that the Daily Scrum Meetings are not meant to do the work, but formally aligning the team about the work and bringing them on the same page. After the Daily Scrum Meeting, Alex (Product Owner) informs Anna (Scrum Master) that the client brought up several new requirements that may potentially impact the ongoing Sprint and the subsequent Sprints. Anna politely reminds Alex that the Scrum Team is unable to pick up these requirements during the current Sprint as the team has already committed to the scope (user stories) of this Sprint. And yet, Anna calls a Backlog Refinement Meeting for the afternoon so that Alex can inform the team about these new requirements. During this meeting, the group supports Alex to figure out where these user stories fit the overall development plan of the software, their initial task break-down, estimates, and priorities. Sprint 1 – Day 10 Finally, that’s the last day of this first Sprint. Anna, the Scrum Master, invites the Scrum Team for the Sprint Review Meeting. The team has prepared a non-production server with the latest version of the shippable software increment they created. Alex, the Scrum Product Owner, and Mr. Rich, one of the client stakeholders, sit in front of an instance of a graphical user interface of this software. They validate if the implementation meets the expectations and if the team documented details regarding the current level of application adequately. At the end of the Sprint Review Meeting, Alex concludes: The team delivered user stories 1,2,6 and 7 as committed and expected. The team couldn’t finish the user story 3 on time, and they didn’t demonstrate this user story at all. So, the remaining tasks of this user story are shifted to this next Sprint. The user story 8 did not fulfill some of its Definition of Done (DoD) criteria. This user story is moved to the next Sprint, so the team can define and complete the associated tasks to satisfy the DoD of this user story later. Alex, the Scrum Product Owner, and Mr. Rich, the client stakeholder, shortly debrief the Scrum Team about the upcoming changes and challenges about the software requirements and the direction of the overall strategy about this software should be going. Mr. Rich thanks the Scrum Team for their efforts and commitment and leaves the room. After the completion of the Sprint Planning Meeting, the Scrum Team sits together for the Sprint Retrospective Meeting. During this meeting, they discuss what went well during the Sprint and what could be improved, so that the likelihood of failed commitments like it happened with user stories 3 and 8 will reduce in the next Sprints. One of the hurdles identified from the Sprint Retrospective Meeting is that the team do not know enough about the overall system architecture. Anna, the Scrum Master, takes over the task of bringing a system architect on board to coach and guide the team at the beginning of the next Sprint. Sprint 2 – Day 1 Alex, the Scrum Product Owner, keeps on adding new requirements to the Scrum Product Backlog based on his recent client meetings. Moreover, he improves the way he articulated DoD of user story 8, so the Scrum Team can better envision the expected outcome from this user story. Alex then invites the team for the Sprint Planning Meeting for Sprint 2. The Scrum Team discuss and commit to user stories with the guidance of Anna, the Scrum Master, and subsequently, the second Sprint begins.

In Part 1, we look at the original studies that led to the discovery of TNF in two separate labs where researchers were looking for two completely different things. We’ll learn how these discoveries then fueled the use of TNF in the failed trials as an anti-cancer agent, and the eventual development of antibody therapy against TNF in septic shock. Australia's Westfield ultramarathon had a surprise entrant in 1983: A 61-year-old potato farmer named Cliff Young joined a field of elite professional runners for the 500-mile race from Sydney to Melbourne. In this week's episode of the Futility Closet podcast we'll describe Young's fortunes in the race and the heart, tenacity, and humor that endeared him to a nation. We'll also learn the difference between no and nay and puzzle over a Japanese baby shortage. Intro: Thomas Wedders exhibited his 7.5-inch nose throughout Yorkshire in the 1770s. How do you harness the power of your mind so that it’s working for you, not against you - especially when things get triggering with your partner? We now know that our minds are flexible, and that through neuroplasticity you can continue to develop and change throughout your whole life. In today’s episode, we are talking with Dr. Dan Siegel, one of the world’s leading experts on mindfulness and neuroplasticity, about how you can apply mindfulness with your partner to develop deeper connection to each other, and to yourself. Come along for the ride, as we take an in-depth look at the relationship between your mind and body - and your partner’s mind and body! Self- In today’s culture we have equated Self as an output of the mind, and the mind as some outcome of the brain. We have narrowed our definition of Self and separated it from a broader and more integrated wholeness. Invite in the possibility that your sense of SELF comes from the weaving together of many layers of your being, and is as expansive as it is tangible. Integration: Integration is the basis for wellbeing. Integration is the unifying principle that various aspects of a system are honored for their differences, and then linked. Integration is at the core of healthy brain functioning, and healthy relationships. In an integrated state, the social engagement system of our brains is turned on and we are available for connection. MWE: A healthy relationship is not about dropping your own sense of Self, it is about learning to honor the uniqueness and individuality of both partners and integrating the two into a new whole. It is about going from ME to MWE: a new WE created by the joining of your two Selves into a new entity. Mindsight: Mindsight is our capacity to be aware of our own minds. It is our ability be aware of our habitual patterns and behaviors and move away from being on autopilot. Mindsight is the capacity to 1) have insight into yourself, 2) have empathy for other people, and 3) honor differences and promote integration. Mindsight is something that can be developed and learned, and must be in order for healthy relationships to form. Thanks to neuroplasticity, increasing mindsight can physiologically and neurologically change our brains- helping us shake off old or inherited patterning and allowing us to become more aware, available, and attuned individuals. PART: This is an acronym that helps get to the core aspects of how you are or are not showing up in your relationships. What PART do you play in your life to bring more health and restoration to yourself and your relationship? P: Presence- Presence is the ability of being in an open and receptive state that allows you to connect with whatever is arising inside of yourself. Once you can be present for yourself, you can learn to develop a deep acceptance of what may come up. As we learn to be with, and tend to, and remain aware of our own triggers, emotions, thoughts, and patterns, we then learn to caretake ourselves in ways that take pressure off of our partners and allow us to be more present with THEM! A: Attunement- By learning to direct your focus of attention, as if it is a stream of energy you can point in various ways, you gain the ability to attune to both yourself and others. Asking questions is a wonderful way to refocus attention. Ask yourself: what meaning does this have for me? What is happening right now? What is happening beneath my/your behavior right now? This curiosity and looking for the underbelly of behavior allows you to gain access to the subjective world of attitudes, beliefs, stories, longings, dreams, insights, and other aspects that are often influencing behavior in the moment. R: Resonance- If, and only if, you are present, open, and attuned, can you resonate with others. Resonating with others is the ability to allow someone else’s internal state to affect your own. It is the openness to being changed because of another. To be touched. To shift inside in response and attunement to another. Feeling felt by others, and willingly feeling with others is the beginning of becoming a MWE. T: Trust- When presence, attunement, and resonance are achieved the social engagement system of our nervous system is engaged and turned out. Our brains are wired towards reactivity (flight, fight, freeze, disconnect, avoid, defense, etc.) however when we are in safe and true connection with others we become receptive. Our neurobiology is changed when we feel safe- our muscles relax, our heart rate lowers, and we enter into a ventral vagal state that allows for even more P and A and R. Trust is simultaneously a requirement and an outcome of being in connection with others. Positive emotion comes from connection. Research (and experience) have shown that positivity resonance is possible whenever there is human connection, even if it is around being together through suffering or difficulty. The act and process of reaching out to another and connecting, no matter their state, changes the neurobiology of both of you and increases the level of integration. The higher the integration the higher the positivity resonance. This is true because as you reach out you provide relief for the sufferer (who felt alone before), and the sense of compassion and empathy is increased in both individuals, therefore forming a sense of MWE. Converting implicit memories into narratives of growth and coherence: Very often our reactions in a given moment are more based on implicit memories (those that live in our subconscious) than they are to the present issues/content. We react to the now as if the past were the present, and this can cause confusion, hurt, and high tension in relationships and wreak havoc in our interactions. When we are unaware and unable to differentiate between present and past we react to triggers in one of four ways: fight, flight, freeze, or faint. To begin the process of bringing these patterns into awareness, attune to your own internal state and notice when you shift from a place of receptivity to one of reactivity. Notice the difference in your body, and become aware of the micro-shifts that help clue you into knowing you are beginning to go into defense/reactive mode. This process has a physiology to it- be it clenched jaw, tightened chest, shallow breathing, getting sweaty, higher pitched voice- begin to map these for yourself so that you can fine tune your self-awareness. Something needs to be done. Nothing positive happens in relationships when we are reactive! That said, it is crucial to learn ways to move out of reactivity and back into receptivity before engaging in fixing/healing/processing. Once you have become skilled in attuning to your internal state of being and noticing when you shift into a reactive state, then it is critical to learn how to take care of yourself. This can be anything and everything from journal writing, to walking around the block, to sitting for a meditation, to calling a friend, to putting on some music and dancing, stretching, drinking a glass of cold water, etc. Whatever your go to self-care and de- escalation strategy is, you MUST first be aware that you need to take a break! This inner work allows you to get back into a state where you are available and open to receiving and being in connection. Memory retrieval is a memory modifier. Once you are able to 1) notice that you are being triggered and 2) able to pause and get out of the reactive state, then you can begin to get curious. What past experiences- be it a single incident, or chronic long term patterns, are informing your reactions right now? Ask non-judgemental, open ended questions of yourself. Write. Process with others. Go to counseling. As you find core explicit memories, you then have the opportunity to bring them into awareness and label as ‘past’. The process of bringing memories into consciousness (memory retrieval) is in itself a form of modifying the memory. Identifying the old memories that have been informing your present reactions allows you to make connections, see links, and gain insight into why you respond the way you do. From here you can make meaning of madness, and meaning of memory. Your implicit memories become explicit, and what is automatic becomes autobiographical. You can begin to own your reactions in empowering ways, saying things like ‘There is a theme in me where I get very defensive when I have the feeling of being rejected because my father never thought I was good enough.” Themes that you may begin to identify could be: abandonment, feeling worthless, neglect, isolation, rejection, being invisible, being smothered, being given too much responsibility, being ignored, being abused, etc. As you shift the ways you relate to yourself and your past, you will find your relationships shift too! SIFTing: Our brains are wired with a negativity bias- meaning we automatically scan and focus on negative aspects of an experience (this is due to survival wiring). That said, our brains are elastic and neuroplasticity allows us to change our brain by changing our focus and rewiring our circuitry. We can do this by taking the time to notice and savor positive experiences. SIFT is a practice and process of focusing the Sensations, Images, Feelings, and Thoughts associated with a positive experience. Try it! The next time you recognize a moment or experience for which you are grateful for, relieved by, appreciative of, or feeling good about, pause and flow through the SIFT process focusing for just long enough to soak in the various aspects of the experience. Neurons that fire together wire together, and therefore these small but frequent exercises begin to reshape our brains in a way that is organized around positivity, making us more receptive and less reactive. The Wheel of Awareness: Imagine a wheel- hub at the center, spokes leading outwards towards the rim. Now imagine that the hub is the seat of your awareness. Your consciousness resides here- centered, central, calm, clear, open. From here you can send a spoke of attention around to the rim, upon which resides all we can be aware of: our five senses, the interior of our bodies, our mental activities, and our sense of interconnectedness. Through practicing the wheel of awareness meditation you can develop the ability to 1) differentiate between awareness of rim elements and awareness of hub elements, 2) recenter yourself in the hub as the source of your consciousness, and 3) redirect your focus of attention/spoke. All of this helps to build your capacity to be in that deep presence so essential to receptivity and attunement. Remember: The more integrated you can become the more you are able to lean into challenges, and the more open you become to new possibilities! Some think that Romans 8:1 contains the greatest promise in the Bible: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” In this sermon, Pastor Charles poses the question, “What part of no don’t you understand?” If “yes” means “yes” concerning every promise in scripture, then “no” must certainly mean “no” […] The post What Part of “No” Don’t You Understand? appeared first on Grace Chapel - Inglewood CA.
