Crime as Forgiven By Against Me! was released in 2001 and followed that same year by the band's self-titled acoustic EP. Frank Turner is a musician from England. The Boys Are Back In Town.... ... This time with reverb.
Fest! Say it again with me... FEST! Unless you've been living under a rock, you're likely quite familiar with the annual punk rock festival which takes place in Gainesville, Florida. Our guest this week, Tony Weinbender, is the founder and principle organizer of the event. Coming up on it's 19th year (well, 20th if you include the pandemic version of Fest At Home), Fest has become one of the most highly sought after tickets in the country within the punk rock community. What began with a handful of local venues over a 1 night period has turned into a three-night blowout featuring over 100 bands across upwards of 20 venues within the college town that spawned the likes of Less Than Jake, Hot Water Music, Against Me! among others. Tony has had a life long love affair with the punk scene, having grown up in a small town in Virginia following the likes of Avail and Fugazi. He cut his teeth on the road working with Less Than Jake as a roadie, and spent many years as a label employee for Fueled By Ramen & No Idea Records. After branching off from one of his earlier endeavors with MACROCK (Mid Atlantic College Radio Conference), Fest has truly become his job, where he spends the entire year curating the lineup, planning with city officials and local businesses to make sure that everything runs smoothly. During this episode we dig into what he and the crew at Fest have been doing to ensure that this year's planned (and postponed from last year) event goes smoothly and safely. We also dig into the history of the event, and where it's going. He provides some pointers to bands that are interested in being part of the event, and of course, we dig into some bands he believes you should have on your radar, and his 5 desert island albums To see more about FEST - https://thefestfl.com/ To hear some of the music mentioned on this and our previous episodes, check out and follow this playlist on Spotify: https://bit.ly/3oI01ZU Question The Answers is co-sponsored by The Bad Copy and Sell The Heart Records, be sure to follow them as well to stay up to date on music news, reviews, and to check out the releases on our label. James Pligge is back by popular demand. This time, we talk about some of the many misconceptions that people have about James and Harm’s Way — as well as James’s ill-fated attempt to make a protein shake with Coca-Cola. To be honest, talking about making a protein shake from Coca-Cola probably doesn’t do a lot to correct any of those popular misconceptions about James… Either way, this is a hilarious conversation. James explains why Harm’s Way is more influenced by The Jesus Lizard than by Madball and also ridicules contemporary powerlifting culture. tl/dr: Ship Thieves have a new album out on Chunksaah and it rules and we talked to Chris Wollard and Chad Darby for a couple hours and it was super fun and important and memorable. To say that I'm a big fan of both of these guests is to vastly understate things. Not only do Chris Wollard and Chad Darby separately occupy important roles in a couple of my favorite bands of all time (obviously Hot Water Music and Samiam if you're keeping score at home), together they've been half of the grossly-underrated Gainesville band Ship Thieves for just over a decade. If you're not familiar with the history, here's a brief retelling: back around 2008/2009, Hot Water Music's Chris Wollard put together a side project that was never intended to be a "real band." He got together with Addison Burns and a few other buddies and recorded a handful of songs at a handful of locations and put out an album known as Chris Wollard + The Ship Thieves back in 2009 on No Idea Records. Fast forward a couple years, and a lineup that included Wollard, Burns, Chad Darby on bass and Bobby Brown on drums had solidified, and collectively they put out the second Chris Wollard + The Ship Thieves album, "Canyons," in 2012. It was a little more riff-rock oriented than the occasionally-acoustic debut album that came before it. By 2016's "No Anchor," the lineup remained not only intact but had developed its own identity and direction, thus Wollard's decision to drop his name from the title and have the project carry on as Ship Thieves. 2021 brings with it the release of "Irruption." The band has found a home on a new label, Chunksaah Records, a label run by the inimitable Kate Hilts and the Bouncing Souls camp. It continues down the musical road that the band was headed down on "No Anchor," and in many ways it does all of the things that "No Anchor" did, only it does them better. The rhythm section of Darby and Brown is as tight as ever, and Darby's bass grooves move in ways we hadn't heard from this outfit before. Burns also moves to the front to take on co-vocal duties on a few tracks, his smoother delivery a noted contrast from Wollard's trademark gravel-throated tones. The band had a lot of fun making the album, and that is evident in spades throughout the duration of the couple hours that we were lucky enough to chat with Wollard and Darby. This was one for the baby book (we still have that, right mom?). "Irruption" is out March 12th and you can theoretically pre-order it on vinyl, except that all the options are presently sold out. There's other new Ship Thieves merch here though: https://www.coldcutsmerch.com/collections/chunksaahrecords

Today we welcome Tony Weinbender from Fest! Tony has curated an amazing festival in Florida started in 2002 with 60 bands has grown into the premiere independent festival with this year having 400+ bands performing across 3 days this fall. It’s simple, make something awesome and stick at it, people will support. Tony like myself started in college radio and booked bands at MacRock, the festival put on by WXJM at James Madison University. He then went on to work at No Idea Records in Florida and toured with bands like Less Than Jake. Fest 17 is this October and if you want to be a part of a community and a festival that keeps its DIY roots, Fest is it. Tony was amazing to spend time talking about his life and what’s next for the festival. If you want to support the podcast, head over to patreon.com/washedupemo and if you do, I’ll be able to make more of these! Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/washedupemo)

This week on Episode 68 of Bobby Pickles' Podcast (Dying Scene Radio #13), Bob and Bobby speak with Joe Piglet - frontman for New York City punk act, The Regressives. After two years in the making, the group has just released their self-titled debut record - which The Bobs give two grubby little thumbs up. Bobby and Joe discover that they used to live in the same neighborhood on Staten Island, which Bobby deems a cesspool. Not to be outdone, Bob admits to living in an “Historic District” of Tampa, surrounded by low-income housing and plush, manicured lawns. The Bobs discuss their very first quarterly review, which just so happens to land appropriately on lucky episode number thirteen. After a well-deserved tongue lashing by Dying Scene Chief Editor, Johnny X, the pair devise some ways of making the show more entertaining and professional, and boost job confidence. Bob, the consummate sycophant, adapts quickly to the recent revamp of the Dying Scene website, and proclaims his admiration for all the changes.
