On this episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman, Mike chats with Nick Karcher! Hailing from Chicago, Nick Karcher is a singer-songwriter in the pop punk vein who has loved music since childhood. Nick went from singing Avril Lavigne songs as a kid to working with one of her multi-platinum producers in Michael Bono (Avril Lavigne, Blink-182, Mod Sun, The Hunna, TSTY) as an adult. In 2021, Nick turned heads in the pop punk realm with his single "How to Lose a Guy." Since then, Nick has released numerous singles and continues to build a following, garnering attention from the likes of Ghost Killer Entertainment, Scene Daddy, and New Noise Magazine, among others. In May 2024, he dropped the single entitled "Blame it on the Universe" about a breakup he went through. That July, Karcher teamed up with We The Kings for a remix of the song called "BIOTU." The track went on to dominate the All New Rock editorial playlist on Spotify and has since racked up over 200,000 streams across all platforms. On February 7th, Karcher released his latest single entitled "Not Another Song Called Perfect" with an accompanying music video, an anthemic love song that's also a playful nod to early 2000s parody films. In this episode, Nick talks with Mike about his early love for singing and Avril Lavigne, the adversity he faced at a young age with coming out, persevering through that bullying and negativity to chase his dreams, working with the talented Michael Bono, the meaning behind "Not Another Song Called Perfect," horror movies, future plans, and more. We spent many nights together at The Downtown, catching any pop-punk, indie, hardcore, or emo band that came through. This was not a phase, Mom! Fast forward 20 years and we are still just as passionate about the scene as we were during our girl jeans and youth XL band tees days. Tom and Mikey are diehard New York Islanders fans, but Justin (Bolts fan) likes to remind us that we are #notanislespodcast. As we got older we realized we can like more than one thing and running beside our love for music has always been our love for hockey. We had the pleasure of interviewing MISSIO over Zoom video!Personally, MISSIO is the union of two longtime friends and creative kindred spirits. Musically, MISSIO is a living and breathing entity with a mind of its own. Communally, MISSIO is a movement of fans worldwide attached to the sentient artistry of those creators. The acclaimed Austin, TX duo—Matthew Brue and David Butler—fearlessly break the rules as they fuse elements of rock, electronic, indie, and hip-hop into an unmatched and uncompromising hybrid. They tie seemingly disparate threads together with honest and heartfelt lyrics meant to both provoke and inspire.Following the 2023-2024 Cinco EP series, the pair present their most definitive and dynamic vision yet with their full-length double-album, I Am Cinco [Nettwerk Music Group]. It collates five moods—I Am Sad, I Am High, I Am Awesome, I Am Angry and I Am Crazy—into one.Since 2015, MISSIO have painted this picture. It only became clearer as they served up projects such as Loner [2017], The Darker the Weather // The Better the Man [2019], Can You Feel The Sun [2020], and VILLAIN [2022]. Tallying over 1 billion streams, their catalog has notably resonated with the Gold-certified “Everybody Gets High” and staples, including “Twisted,” “Bottom of the Deep Blue See,” “Sing To Me,” and “I See You.” Between packing houses on tour, they appeared at festivals a la ACL and Lollapalooza and incited the applause of Atwood Magazine, Billboard, Rolling Stone, The Boston Globe, New Noise Magazine, and Substream Magazine. This ambitious season of music initially took shape in their headquarters of Austin only to be completed on a creative sojourn to Mexico City. Excited to share the music with the world, the group teased what would become I Am Cinco with 2023's I Am Sad, I Am High, and I Am Awesome. Everything just set the stage for them to finally release this body of work in its entirety as I Am Cinco. We want to hear from you! On this episode of March Forth with Mike Bauman, Mike chats with Keeper! Hailing from London, UK, Keeper is an alternative music artist that's continued to build a following since releasing his debut EP "Guess I'm Keeper" in March, 2021. Fusing elements of hyper pop, pop punk, post hardcore, emo rap, and 808s, Keeper's talent on the guitar and behind the mic have garnered the attention of media outlets like Alternative Press, BBC Introducing, Idobi Radio, Clash Magazine, New Noise Magazine, and more. Despite his talent as a musician, Keeper tries not to take himself too seriously, which is evident in several of his music videos. So far in 2023, he's dropped the singles "Come Around" and "I Don't Even Know Myself," the latter of which features fellow rising UK music artist tmdistant. Both songs show Keeper's creative evolution, giving fans something to chew on prior to his forthcoming EP "The Greatest Hits...He Lied." In this podcast, Keeper talks with Mike about his early love for Britney Spears, putting the time in on guitar, finding his voice as a vocalist, the difficulties of COVID which led him to starting Keeper, not taking himself too seriously, his sold-out London show with tmdistant back in June, his forthcoming EP "The Greatest Hits...He Lied," and more. We had the pleasure of interviewing Hollywood Undead over Zoom video!Multi-platinum rap rock band Hollywood Undead shares the music video for “House of Mirrors” featuring multi-genre sensation Jelly Roll. Available exclusively on the digital version of Hotel Kalifornia Deluxe.Originally released in 2022, Hotel Kalifornia represents “a juxtaposition between the ‘haves' and the 'have-nots,' highlighting the ongoing homelessness and cost of living crisis that is affecting the band's home state of California.” The album highlights the best aspects of what Hollywood Undead has become known for, garnering support from Revolver, SPIN, New Noise Magazine. Hotel Kalifornia also saw placements on genre playlists such as Spotify's Rock Hard, Hard Rock & Rock Rotation, Apple Music's Breaking Hard Rock & New in Rock, and Top 40 placement at US Rock & Active Rock Radio with the standout single “City Of The Dead.”ABOUT HOLLYWOOD UNDEADNot long after the turn of the century, a collective of friends congregated around a common vision bred in the gutters and back alleys of Hollywood, CA. Under the influence of everything from gritty nineties hip-hop to industrial metal (not to mention cheap booze), they climbed out of similar experiences in poverty and hardship and vaulted to the forefront of 21st century rock music on their own terms. To this day, Hollywood Undead hinges on the bond of five individuals who relay such raw experiences into relatable anthems. However, the platinum-certified quintet—Johnny 3 Tears, J-Dog, Funny Man, Charlie Scene, and Danny—tell their story like never before on their recently released eighth full-length album, Hotel Kalifornia [Dove & Grenade Media/BMG].Throughout 2021, the boys recorded in Nashville and Los Angeles with producers Erik Ron (I Prevail, Godsmack), Andrew Migliore (Sueco, Zero 9:36 Papa Roach), and Drew Fulk (Ice Nine Kills, Lil Wayne, Lil Peep). Working face-to-face, Hollywood Undead rekindled the unbridled intensity of their formative material, yet with refinement only possible through years of grinding on the road.We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Emily Whitehurst of Survival Guide and Tsunami Bomb over Zoom video!“Music is crucial to my survival!” said Emily Whitehurst. “Survival Guide is one woman trying to shape her own place in this world as a musician.”An electronic indie-pop artist with a background in punk, Emily is the solo force behind Survival Guide. Her danceable tunes evoke a sonic birthday cake: alternating layers of Depeche Mode, Metric, Peter Gabriel, and Grimes, with vibrant melodies and vocals the icing on top.A California native now residing in Texas, Emily's music obsession began with Green Day, leading her to a dreams-come-true life of punk rock as she traversed continents fronting the band Tsunami Bomb as “Agent M.” Over the years, her music gradually shifted toward synth pop in The Action Design, then further into the electronic indie-pop realm as Survival Guide.Originally a duo, Survival Guide's first album, Way To Go, – dubbed “passion behind an electronic soul” by New Noise Magazine – was released in 2015. It was around this time when Survival Guide slowly, amicably yet painfully became a solo act, leaving Whitehurst unsure of what to do next. Never having written or performed music alone, she considered everything from starting a new band to quitting music altogether. After a major geographical shift, an acoustic album, and some solo touring, she's finally ready to return as a solo Survival Guide. The newly released, alter-ego Survival Guide debuted in January with RHV1.5 (short for Request Hotline, Vol. 1.5): featuring two intriguing dance-party reimaginings of AFI's “Totalimmortal” and “Girl's Not Grey on Side A alongside two contemplative Misfits piano-serenade covers (“Skulls” and “Hybrid Moments”) on Side B.With only 500 copies pressed on randomly colored vinyl, RHV1.5 is also a taster for the 11-track, digital-only Request Hotline, Vol. 2, featuring all songs from the 7” plus an eclectic array of further punk covers from Green Day, Runaways, Avril Lavigne, Distillers, Tony Sly, Sleater-Kinney, and Maybe Tomorrow, each with its own bold and unique Survival Guide treatment. We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing Oceans Ate Alaska over Zoom video.Balance requires duality. As such, Oceans Ate Alaska thrive in the midst of extremes. The British quintet—James Harrison [vocals], Chris Turner [drums], James “Jibs” Kennedy [guitar], Adam Zytkiewicz [guitar], and Mike Stanton [bass]—ebb and flow between moments of elite metallic intensity, proficient progressive experimentation, and delicate lo-fi bliss. They plunge dynamic depths and surface with an utterly unpredictable and undeniable signature style meant to upend expectations at every turn. After tallying tens of millions of streams and earning acclaim from Alternative Press, New Noise Magazine, and more, the group perfect this balance on their third full-length offering, Disparity [Fearless Records].Oceans Ate Alaska have carefully and quietly progressed to this point. Following their 2015 debut Lost Isles, they presented Hikari in 2017. “Hansha” amassed over 10.8 million Spotify streams as the album surpassed 40 million total streams.Along the way, they toured with the likes of Wage War, The Plot In You, We Came As Romans, Like Moths To Flames, and more. Throughout 2021, they assembled what would become Disparity. Inspired by a mutual love for the likes of Bonobo and Alina Baraz, collaborator Clem Cherry enhanced the production with airy beat-craft and immersive sonic accents. At the same time, they absorbed the unease of the world, infusing a post-apocalyptic thematic undercurrent. We want to hear from you! The wait is over for Moments, the brand new EP from Post pop-punk band Dear Spring. Featuring recent singles “Empty Frames,” “Newspeak,” and “Every Now And Then,” Moments has captured the attention of Ones To Watch, Chorus.fm, New Noise Magazine, and more with its “aggressive guitars, emotive vocals, and a rhythm section that hits like a freight train” (Under The Radar). The EP is out now via Open Your Ears Records and can be streamed online at https://orcd.co/momentsds. Speaking on the EP the band shares, “The ‘Moments' EP represents an evolution of Dear Spring's sound and thus far, the biggest step forward for the band. Dear Spring's once disparate influences of up-beat Pop Punk, pensive Emo, and emotional Post-Hardcore have found their center with the Washington D.C. quartet's latest 6-song offering. Conceived during a time of self-transformation, "Moments" intimately captures a snapshot in the life of the band. Themes of isolation and loss are explored on the EP's opening track "Wooden Fences.” The album's second track, “Vultures” touches on the band's grungier influences in the vehicle of a siren's song. The EP's lead single, “Every Now And Then”, focuses on self-improvement and the longing for human connection in a time of great disconnection. The EP's second single, "Newspeak", examines self-destructive tendencies and the struggle of expression in an age of extreme polarization. The EP's closer, “Empty Frames” is an introspective accounting of the damage and ongoing struggles of being neurodivergent. With Man Overboard's Nik Bruzzese returning to produce and Fairweather's Ben Green joining to mix the record, ‘Moments' is poised to be Dear Spring's most impactful release yet.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/support

An emo-leaning, alternative rock outfit based in Scranton, PA, The Maguas are Erik Miller (Vocals), Matthew Jenkins (Lead Guitar), Daulton Rissinger (Rhythm Guitar), Luke Prusinski (Bass), and Brandon Ossont (Drums). Established in 2018, the band released their debut EP, ‘Good Beer,' the following year. The six-track, self-produced record was a demonstration of the collective's unique songwriting capabilities, boasting songs written by each member prior to their coalescence. The notable exception, however, was, “Funeral.” The closing track brought them back together for an anthemic display of their aggressive pop-punk power, which soon accentuated performances alongside the likes of Forever Came Calling, Assuming We Survive, and We Were Sharks. Partnering with producer Nik Bruzzese (Man Overboard, The Wonder Years), The Maguas set to work on their sophomore release in early 2020. ‘One of Us Is Lying' dropped later that year, quickly garnering significant traction within the scene and earning them recognition from an array of outlets including The Popko Project, New Noise Magazine, and Alternative Press. Once again working with Bruzzese, the band is now setting forth on their third iteration with an anticipated release in 2021. With a solid foundation underfoot, they're diving deep into dark and vulnerable lyrical thematics to advance their signature “novel yet nostalgic” emo sound. Following the successful release of their first single of 2021 "Drifter", The Maguas are beyond excited to share their highly anticipated second single “Shapeless.” "Shapeless" Music Video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPdZisLsjbA Directed, shot, and edited by Alex Zarek www.facebook.com/THEMAGUAS https://twitter.com/themaguas www.instagram.com/THEMAGUAS Tickets to the December 8th Toys for Tots Benefit Concert: Moshing Around the Christmas Tree Toys for Tots Benefit Feat. WAVE BREAK's history is long and complicated, but there is one thing that has always been the same: frontwoman Kelly Barber has always been the driving force. After a series of lineup changes, she found herself as the only one in the band. Instead of calling it quits, this time she decided to continue on her own. 2018's debut EP Armory introduced the band with a fierce, lively sound that spread messages of strength and vitality. They quickly found support from outlets such as idobi Radio and New Noise Magazine, and went on to tour the northeast US. They also performed alongside various bands and artists such as Boys of Fall (InVogue Records), Nick Thomas (The Spill Canvas), Secrets (Made In The Shade Records), and Kulick (RCA Records) to name a few. Throughout 2020, Barber was hard at work on Wave Break's followup EP, due out in fall 2021. The record blends elements of bands and artists such as Avril Lavigne, Acceptance and Rise Against to form a unique brand of melodic alternative rock; utilizing punchy instrumentation, dynamic vocals and melancholic lyrics. It explores the importance of surrounding yourself with the right people and situations, and the impact on mental health as you're finding them. Barber, having named the band after overcoming adversity, is fiercely adamant about carrying that torch. Wave Break was built with a fire that cannot be extinguished, and it's burning brighter than ever before. Her goal is to inspire others to take their lives by the reigns and to push through whatever obstacles lay ahead; nay, break them. All she needs is time. Check out Wave Break here! Joker's Hand is a rock band hailing from Torrance, CA. Founding members Kevin Kawano and Matthew Lau met while attending film school at UC Santa Cruz. After writing dozens of demos and carving a name for themselves on the Los Angeles club circuit, the band met with producers Steve Ornest and Wyn Davis at Total Access Recording Studios (Sublime, No Doubt, Guns N' Roses). They began working on what would become their debut self-titled EP, which was released in March 2020. The band's first single “Anthem,” landed in rotation on several FM radio stations throughout Southern California. Their second single “Gold Rush” charted on KROQ's Locals Only, reaching #1 and staying in the Top 5 for nine weeks straight. KROQ's Locals Only also featured their song “Hijacked” which also took the #1 spot, their second song to top the chart. Best described as retro rock with a punk edge, Joker's Hand songs are timeless, and their commercial accessibility reaches across the generations. The band's explosive live shows coupled with their excellent vocal ability and musicianship has catapulted them above the noise floor of the Los Angeles rock music scene. The Asian American duo has been active in the #StopAsianHate movement, recently performing at rallies across the Southland. Few people have made as big an impact on the DIY music community as Mike Park. Playing in bands like Skankin' Pickle and The Chinkees, his music has been both widely enjoyed and hugely influential for ska from the '90s to today. But in addition to his own music, Park has also had a big influence on the scene by helping other bands get their start. He founded Dill Records and eventually Asian Man Records in the '90s. Over the past 24 years, Asian Man has been a home and sometimes a launching pad for many seminal punk and ska bands, from The Alkaline Trio, to Less Than Jake, to Bomb! the Music Industry, to AJJ and countless others. In 2011, he even founded an offshoot of the label called Fun Fun Records to release children's music, like the Minnesota dance-pop duo Koo Koo Kangaroo. Through the community he established at Asian Man, Park continues to touch the lives of adults and children around the world. Even after decades of involvement in the DIY scene, he hasn't lost that love and care for the community.* JC sat down with Mike to talk about the Bay Area music scene, what it's like to run a record label during a pandemic, and the lack of all ages venues in the south bay. All of this and more on the next theFIVE10 Podcast! * bio taken from New Noise Magazine
Lisa Root takes on the monolithic task of running New Noise Magazine, a music centered magazine that has been around now for 7 years and is going strong. As the founder and editor-in-chief, Lisa leads the ship and it's crew through the crazy deadline cycle and manages to make a significantly positive impact on the music scene on a really large scale, covering interview, articles and features on various bands, as well as a ton of album and live show (when they were happening) reviews. Thankfully, she admits that she has the right personality for the job, and her love of the music scene and punk rock ethos carry her through the journey of creating each issue. During this episode, we talk about what it takes to get each issue out, along with what it means to be working in print media during the time of Covid. She gives me some history of the magazine and we discuss where it's heading. Lisa also shares with me some of her favorite artists and her desert island albums. Ne w Episode Out Now Denmark's current hottest export SIAMESE have just dropped a video for new single 'Can't Force The Love'. The award-winning post-hardcore outfit blend heavy riffs with soaring melodic vocals in this hook-filled track. Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/qb1nwhkGNWU Listen to 'Can't Force The Love' here: https://siamesedk.lnk.to/cantforcethelove 'Can't Force The Love' is the follow up to 'Home' ft Drew York (Stray From The Path) which received an incredible response and amassed over 700,000 streams in eight weeks. Feedback for the track was extremely positive and placed the band firmly on the map, with support from the likes of Rock Sound, Radio 1, Kerrang! Radio and top placements on Spotify's influential 'Kickass Metal' and 'New Core' playlists. The video for 'Can't Force The Love' is number two of three the band filmed in an abandoned military base in Denmark, that was actually the set for Netflix series 'The Rain'. "We found it to be very 2020 apocalyptic, but also had to be creative and smart in trying to make an idea work during lockdowns, restrictions etc." explains frontman Mirza Radonjica. "Lyrically the song is dedicated to a person I had to let go last year. Not to diss her, or to point fingers, but to explain what an impossible idiot I am, and why she's better off without me to be honest." SIAMESE have moved their UK tour to July and August, see below for new dates. Line-Up: Mirza Radonjica - Vocals Andreas Kruger - Guitar Christian Lauritzen - Guitar, Violin Marc Nommesen - Bass Joakim Stilling - Drums SIAMESE online: https://www.facebook.com/siamesedk https://siamese.bandcamp.com/ My thoughts Force the love is a strong single packed with melody and a chorus with a natural hook, guitars sounds that really hit hard, Siamese have really delivered a great track, packed with influences from bands like apocalyptica and Nightwish I feel the guys have done an incredible job at mixing all these incredible sounds you have the heavy guitars and drums and yet the melodic electronic trance sounds. Go and give this a listen Moving on to our next single this week OKAY so something completely out of my comfort zone and genre I have never even thought I consider looking into DUB TRIO share a new single via New Damage Records titled 'Them Thing Deh Dub' featuring BENJI WEBBE of Skindred on vocals. Listen on YouTube here: https://youtu.be/o5GB9JFl5I8 Stream here: https://fanlink.to/DubTrio 'Them Thing Deh Dub' is a cover of 'Them Thing Deh' by legendary reggae artist Ini Zamoze. "We're putting this song out for the love of it. We knew we wanted to do a track that paid homage to our forefathers of reggae and dub, rhythm section greatness, Sly and Robbie. They have been an endless source of inspiration to us as a band from the beginning,” shares DUB TRIO's Stu Brooks. “So, as helicopters swarmed over Hollywood during BLM protests, my wife and I felt compelled to finally break quarantine. As we approached Hollywood and Vine to join in solidarity with the protesters, ‘Them Thing Deh' happened to be the soundtrack in my headphones. The lyric “got to keep your cool” really spoke to me as I could feel the tension in the air. That week, we quickly put the rhythm tracks together, recording from three different states, with the help of Roger Rivas on organ and keys and hit up our old friend, legend Benji Webbe. Benji is the ultimate genre-masher, soulfully clashing metal, reggae, punk, dub, dancehall... all the sh*t we love!” Among the band members' many production and recording projects, Stu Brooks had the honour to track the bass for Danny Elfman's first solo single in 36 years, 'Happy'. It is available now and can be found here: https://dannyelfman.ffm.to/happy DUB TRIO released their 5th full-length album The Shape of Dub to Come on New Damage Records in 2019, with praise from Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, Consequence of Sound, Revolver, Noisey, Brooklyn Vegan, New Noise Magazine, Submerge Magazine, and more. An homage to titles such as Refused's The Shape of Punk to Come and Ornette Coleman's The Shape of Jazz to Come, The Shape of Dub to Come's groove hinges on slower stoner-inspired sludge riffing. The release was followed by touring across the United States and Europe, including direct support on the Incubus tour. The acclaimed LP was announced with 'World of Inconvenience [feat. King Buzzo]' at Rolling Stone, who called it, “Heavy, trippy… a crafty, atmospheric hybrid." 'Fought The Line [feat. Troy Sanders]' followed via Consequence of Sound, "The creepy, script-flipping video speaks to the song's heavy lyrical theme." With 'Forget My Name Dub [feat. Meshell Ndegeocello]', they usher dub into new territory like only they can. Purchase The Shape of Dub to Come here: http://smarturl.it/DubTrio Over nearly two decades together, Brooklyn's DUB TRIO - Stu Brooks [bass], DP Holmes [guitar], andJoe Tomino [drums] - not only delivered a string of albums that forever redefined the term “dub” under cover of metal, punk, alternative, and shoegaze, but also infused its musical prowess into the studio recordings and the shows of genre-bending icons ranging from Mike Patton to Lady Gaga. Dub Trio social links https://dubtrio.com/ https://www.facebook.com/dubtrio/ https://www.instagram.com/dubtrio/ My thoughts so Like I said at the start this is something that I'm not in my comfort zone and feel like a massive intruder but we give this a guy, personally I quite enjoyed this track its melodic and an easy listen, some lovely production on the track with different sounds and different effects within the track, if you're a fan of reggae then go and check this out Dub war sound like a lot of fun You can find this episode and previous episodes from Setting The Tone in the below links Spotfiy https://open.spotify.com/show/6Jj9SsrXxve44839dptihN… Apple https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/setting-the-tone/id1499390718 Google https://podcasts.google.com/?q=setting%20the%20tone podbean https://Settingthetone2.podbean.com Thank you to our sponsor @The Guitar Ninja Academy, the best place to become a guitar master. We had the pleasure of interviewing Larissa Vale and Kyle Hawken of Black Satellite over Zoom video! Black Satellite was named one of Alternative Press’ “12 Bands You Need to Know” sharing that "Frontwoman Larissa Vale offers an aggressively elegant vocal range that pairs perfectly over Kyle Hawken’s melodic guitar riffs and instrumental work. Each song from Endless effortlessly shows off the duo’s provocative sound and captivating alt-rock essence." Additional support from the band from outlets like Billboard, Loudwire, New Noise Magazine, Alternative Press and more have continued to validate and solidify Black Satellite’s place in the rock world.Black Satellite is a rock duo from NYC comprised of Larissa Vale and Kyle Hawken. Having been writing music together for several years, Black Satellite is the culmination of a deep-rooted partnership contributing to their unified writing style.Shortly after launching their first single “Valkyrie” from their full-length album “Endless," Black Satellite was requested as support for Starset at NYC’s Gramercy Theatre on the strength of their debut. Billboard describes the album as "the end point one might arrive at after listening to all of Muse’s catalog and deciding they just weren’t epic enough.”Black Satellite subsequently released two cover songs paying tribute to Type O Negative, which charted on metal radio. The band has recently concluded writing and recording their sophomore record, Aftermath, mixed by veteran producer Ben Grosse (Marilyn Manson, Filter, Breaking Benjamin). I've had the pleasure of getting to know Alan over the years, and he's a great guy, with a lot of rad stories to share. In this episode I talk with the heartfelt and fierce CJ Miller. We speak about her movement towards the dance/movement practice as a Pony Sweat instructor, inhabiting her body as intersex and trans, her relationship to empowered femme-ness and her identification as a Leopard Grrrl, amongst other things. CJ Miller is a dancer, poet, illustrator, and musician. Currently she is the frontwomxn for agitprop Clueless Soundtrack worshipping riot grrl band dimber and plays bass for queer anarcho death rock band Remorseless. She is an instructor for Pony Sweat - fiercely non-competitive, body positive dance aerobics. Her most recent poetry collection LipsTick Vol. 1, a diary and emotional outpouring of intersex, trans femme history and experience, was released via Arts N Crass printing and distro. She has contributed interviews, reviews, and opinion pieces most recently to Razorcake Magazine, Maximum Rocknroll, and New Noise Magazine. CJ is also co-founder and an organizer for Presence, an all ages queer/trans/enby/GNC/intersex community and artist focus event based out of North East Los Angeles. @spookymiller_ CJ has a really powerful self-portrait project that she is offering for print on t-shirts. I will post the image in my newsletter and instagram. The shirts are available to trans ENBY folks for free. CJ’s intention is to encourage acceptance and empower love for tans bodies outside the current model which presses folks towards surgery and alterations our bodies to conform to oppressive binary gender standards. In order to cover the costs of this project CJ is asking cisgender people to donate $20-40 at Venmo: dimber CJ Miller. It is really a beautiful exchange she is setting up so I hope you consider a donation. LITQB Podcast: This is a podcast about the barriers to embodiment and how our collective body stories can bring us back to ourselves. This is a podcast for people who identify as queer or for people who might think of their relationship between their body and confining social narratives as queer. This can feel like an isolating experience. Our wounded bodies need spaces to talk about struggles with nourishment/disordered eating, body image issues, dysphoria, racism, heterosexism, transphobia, xenophobia, substance use/abuse, chronic pain/disability, body changes in parenthood, intergenerational trauma, the medical/wellness/therapy industrial complex and its lack of inclusion of queer bodies and much more. Capital North is a hard rock dynamic duo from Pasadena, CA, consisting of Jonathan Farrar (Guitar/Vocals) and Anthony Zichella (Vocals). Formed in the summer of 2016 after the disbanding of their former pop-punk/post-hardcore band, Lights In The Sky, the two came together to form a band that would best showcase who they are as musicians and thus, Capital North was born. After the split of LITS, Farrar packed his bag and traveled the world for a year on a mission of soul searching while Zichella graduated from culinary school and moved to Portland to pursue his passion as a chef, but both found their way back to one thing; music. Before long, the two began planning the direction of what would be Capital North from separate continents. While traveling in Iceland, Farrar visited a unique and beautiful town called Akureyri, better known as the 'Capital of the North.' Leaving a lasting impression on him, he realized it accurately described the duo's current state of emotions as they strive to get back to what is important with "capital" being an integral place or feeling while "north" describes the direction in which to get there. Farrar shares, "Essentially, this name means getting back to what is important. That is what we have experienced time and time again - always straying, but always returning to music because it is such a vital aspect of our existence and being."As a band, Capital North has created a sound that is a drastic change from their former project and focuses on connecting with listeners through relatable lyrical themes and honest melodies. Recorded at The Pie Studios in Pasadena, the band's debut EP, Sea To Sky, was engineered by Nels Jensen (Sigur Rós, Jamie Foxx) with tracking by Devyn June, and mixed/mastered by Bertrand and Eric Poncet (of Chunk! No, Captain Chunk!) at Alias Studio. The six-track EP is set to be released on March 2nd, 2018 and discusses real life experiences including struggles with health, relationships, life, and death. With the release of Sea To Sky, Capital North looks excitedly toward the future and the potential of making a monumental impact in the music scene and beyond. Sea To Sky is available for digital pre-order here with merch bundles here. Head on over to New Noise Magazine to watch the music video for "Glass Houses." The Colorado-based quartet Slow Caves offers a relaxed and surfy update to '80s synth, '90s jangle and early 2000s indie rock on its EP Desert Minded, which dropped in March on Cincinnati's own Old Flame Records. Danish-born brothers Jakob and Oliver Mueller handle vocals and guitars, rounded out by their childhood friends David Dugan on guitar/bass and Jackson Lamperes on the drums. You'd swear the music video for "Glares" was yanked off reel-to-reel film footage they found at a thrift store, but they captured the fuzzy, nostalgic-looking scenes last summer on the final day of a trip across the pond in Denmark. "We wanted the video to reflect how we are as a band internally, and kind of give people a taste of what it’s like to hang out with us. So, we handed the camera to our cousins, Kristian and Martin, and just kind of goofed around," the band told New Noise Magazine, which premiered the video in April. "We shot most of the footage at their school in Silkeborg (where Oliver and Jakob were born). The scenery there is unreal. We think the vibe of the video matches the song and our personalities really well."
