A fully updated and fascinating "where are they now" of all the main players in "Dirty Windshields", including members of the Smugglers past and present, beloved roadie Ska-T, Nardwuar the Human Serviette, Larry Livermore from Lookout Records and more.
The Smugglers are pulled out of a dozen years of dormancy by a young promoter from a legendary venue: 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California, for an epic event that would eventually become known as "The Lookouting." In turn, "Dirty Windshields", and the Smugglers, received a surprise happy ending...
ROUGH PATCH! After years of slowly building up the Smugglers into something one might consider 'successful', the house of cards collapses when two members of the band quit. Upheaval at both Mint and Lookout Records doesn't help matters.

This week, Andy is joined by Chris Appelgren. Chris took the reins at Lookout Records in 1997 after founder Larry Livermore decided he wanted to move on from the label. Having worked for the label for many years and doing artwork for many of the bands on the label, it seemed like a great opportunity. Under his watch (along with co-owners Molly Neuman and Cathy Bauer), Lookout managed to keep serving up tasty punk rock records from label vets like The Mr. T Experience and Screeching Weasel, to more angular indie-rock bands like Pretty Girls Make Graves and Engine Down. Unfortunately, due to a downward trend in album sales, and being unable to fulfill some royalty obligations to some of the label's top selling bands (Green Day, Operation Ivy, etc), the label had to close shop in 2012. But man, what a run! Besides being co-owner of one of the most iconic punk rock labels of all time, Chris is also a musician. He was the front person for The Pattern and The Peechees, played drums in The Potatomen, among other projects. Nowadays, he continues to work with bands doing graphic art for the likes of The Once and Future Band, and also has a musical project with friends covering obscure songs from the 60s and 70s. During this episode, we discuss his time with Lookout Records, as well as his time performing in The Pattern. We also discuss some of his favorite artists and he gives me his 5 desert island albums. Lookout!'s own Larry Livermore once called them one of the best bands in the world, so we enter the world of the Zatopeks this week. We talk previous bands, the most goth thing the drummer's ever done and the worst toilets in the world. Additional music comes from The Blowies and The Sewer Rats
On this episode of the Jersey Beat Podcast, Editor Jim Testa chats with Larry Livermore, co-founder and former co-owner of Lookout Records, author, and frontman of The Potatomen. Don Giovanni Records has just released Toytown: Outtakes And Rarities, a collection of demos and other effluvia from the band that Livermore formed with his business partner and good friend Patrick Hayes and, a barely teenaged lad who called himself Tres Cool (whatever happened to him?) Larry talks about both the Potatomen and the book he's currently working on, as well as some other remembrances and observations. This episode includes the following songs: The Mr. T Experience - "God Bless Lawrence Livermore" The Potatomen - "Empty Inside" The Potatomen - "Debra Jean" The Potatomen - "The Day I Said Goodbye" The Potatomen - "The Drunken Staircase" The Potatomen - "Toytown" The Potatomen catalog including Toytown: Outtakes & Rarities is available from DonGiovanniRecords.com
This is the critical review of the album that set Green Day on the road to superstardom. For the first time Larry Livermore, the man who discovered Green Day and nurtured the band to the verge of its commercial breakthrough, speaks about life inside the world of Green Day, and his early experiences with the band when they were known as Sweet Children.

In the mid-1990s, the East Bay was the center of the punk rock universe. Lookout Records co-founder Larry Livermore shares his thoughts on the surprising origins of the scene that produced the biggest-selling punk band of all time and countless other influential (and occasionally notorious) groups. He also reflects on how letting his little record label grow beyond his bedroom into a multi-million dollar company sowed the seeds of its downfall. “It was far beyond the wildest dreams of the young assembly line steel mill worker that I started out as...”
Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Larry Livermore, formerly of Lookout Records and author of the book… The post LOUD! FAST! PHILLY! Episode 73: Larry Livermore of Lookout Records appeared first on Cinepunx.
Joseph A. Gervasi interviews Larry Livermore, formerly of Lookout Records and author of the book How To Ru(i)n A Label (Don Giovanni Records, 2015). Since Larry’s book covers the story of his involvement (and de-volvement) with Lookout Records so well, we only talk about the label a bit in this lengthy interview. Instead we focus on other aspects of Larry’s life, like growing up working class in Detroit, his estrangement from his family, the consumption and sale of psychedelic drugs, living in Northern California, MaximumRockNRoll, the punk scene’s sometimes self-destructive disdain for success and embrace of obscurity and failure, and being involved in a record label that meant a lot to countless people. We talk about how we came to know one another in a story about my stay at a hippie religious commune in the early 1990s. The Martin Sprouse edited book Threat By Example (Pressure Drop Press, 1989) is discussed along with Larry’s essay in it. The discussion doesn’t shy away from sensitive subjects such as suicide, love, and loneliness. All told, even those who’ve read Larry’s columns and books (and possibly attending one of his speaking engagements) will find much to enjoy in this interview. As I note at the start of the interview (and as is the case with a few other interviews in the project), Larry is not a “Philly person” (though he told a terrific Philly story when he gave his speaking engagement shortly after this interview was conducted). Larry’s writing, bands (The Lookouts, The Potato Men), the Gilman Street Project/924 Gilman, and records he released through Lookout Records had an impact on participants in the Philly scene (myself included). Today marks the first episode of the newish format focusing more on my guests' childhoods, and I couldn't have asked for a better guest, the wonderful musician and writer Larry Livermore. Originally from Detroit, Larry began to get involved with the San Francisco punk scene in the late 1970s. After playing in a number of bands, he co-founded Lookout! Records in 1987 which was the home of numerous bands including Green Day, Op Ivy and Rancid. Larry's also written for Maximum Rocknroll, Punk Planet, and most recently Don Giovanni Records published his memoirs Spy Rock Memories.A few weeks ago, Larry stopped by my Harlem studio and we got in deep about childhood enemies, learning not to be a smart aleck, stories from WWII and The Depression, autos as status symbols, working class consciousness and being on the run from the FBI in late '60s NYC. Plus, in the epilogue, I learn about current day warzone-ish Detroit from my fiancee, stand-up Naomi Ekperigin.A big thanks, btw, to Matt Cohen and Eric Silver for their thoughts on how to further develop the show!Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see some live dates: on Aug. 31st we'll be live at the Out of Bounds Festival in Austin with director Todd Rohal, Ramesh Srivastava of Voxtrot and more, and the next live episode will be September 3rd for the Beginnings "Writer's Panel" featuring Annie Mebane (Community, The Michael J. Fox), guest co-host Opus Moreschi (head writer of Colbert Report) and more!
We had a real blast at maybe one of my favorite live episodes that we've yet taped! A few weeks ago, we were joined by Joe Randazzo (The Onion, AdultSwim.com), Larry Livermore (founder of Lookout! Records), Jamie Lee (Girl Code, Last Comic Standing), musical guest Brother JT (Thrill Jockey, Drag City), and a special appearance buy the great Talib Kweli. Listen and enjoy! Also, check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and see us live at the Del Close Marathon on June 29th and live at UCB East on July 2nd with Wyatt Cenac, Mandy Stadtmiller (deputy editor of xoJane), musical guest Xenia Rubinos and a special guest from the world of hip hop!
We're still waiting for our copy of Larry Livermore's new book to ship. In the meantime, however, we've managed to coax some Spy Rock memories out of the Lookout Records cofounder. from growing up to the music of the MC5 and mountaintop encounters with teenage members of Green Day.
100 episodes! It's been a blast, and while Mark and Andy accidentally turned into hyenas recently, they went out in style with a great live episode taped earlier in May at UCB East featuring Sam Seder of Majority Report; J.J. Sedelmaier, the co-creator of the SNL cartoons; Austin Brown of Parquet Courts; and musical guest Dan Friel. Hopefully, our fretful hosts will find a magical cure for their hyena-ism before episode 101! Check out our new website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes and come see the next live episode on June 4th at 8pm at UCB East with Joe Randazzo (The Onion, Thing X), Larry Livermore (founder of Lookout! Records), Jamie Lee (Girl Code, Last Comic Standing), and musical guest Brother JT (Thrill Jockey, Drag City) and maybe more!
In this episode, John and friends put Operation Ivy's Energy LP under the microscope. Featuring pieces by Tim Stafford, Joe Jacob, Bradley Adita, Matt Ellin, Connor Kalista, and Sonja Amazonka. Artificial Life (Jesse Michaels Interview) 17. Room Without A Window (Jesse Michaels) 18. Big City (Connor Kalista Part II) 19. Missionary (Larry Livermore Interview) Last Question (Jesse Michaels Interview) The Cast Jesse Michaels: was the lead singer and songwriter for Operation Ivy. His other bands have included Common Rider and Classics Of Love. He is now working on a novel to be released sometime this year. Tim Stafford: is a Chicago writer, performer, husband, and Father. He can be seen regularly with the Chicago based The Encyclopedia Show. Larry Livermore: is the founder of Lookout Records. He has also written for Maximum Rock N Roll. He is also working on a book. And has a website with much writing: www.larrylivermore.com Joe Jacob: is a professional motion graphics animator living in Chicago. He also engages in various forms of writing, the results of which tend to toil in obscurity and fuel his narcissistic martyr complex. Bradley Adita: is a punk house survivor, juggler of miscellania, publisher of A Day In The Air zine, and "Head Butthead" at Pop Punk Dot Com. Matt Ellin: is the youngest writer we have had on this podcast, 13 Years Old! He discovered punk rock and its various offshoots a few years ago through exposure to The Ramones and The Sex Pistols, and it’s changed his life for better or worse. He immediately took to singing (And more recently playing bass) in bands. He listened to punk rock religiously and studied its stories. As a musician, He has no desire to be generic and he wants to do things in punk that haven’t been done. As a writer, he likes to bring new ideas and philosophies into the scene. Connor Kalista: was born and raised in Texas. After he finished school there and abroad, he lived in Chicago, where he worked in museums and made lots of theater. Mostly with the Neo-Futurists but also with Theater Oobleck, Plasticene and Schadenfreude. He now lives in Brooklyn where he works as a film and video editor and most recently completed work on Without Shepherds, a documentary about Pakistan that will premiere at the 2013 Slamdance Film Festival. He is currently at work on a documentary about Somali pirates. He still makes theater and in 2011, he co-created and performed with the New York Neo Futurists in the Drama Desk nominated production, The Complete and Condensed Stage Directions on Eugene O’Neill, Volume One: Early Plays/Lost Plays. He still goes to lots of live shows and wishes he had more time to draw. Sonja Amazonka: Sonja always felt that there was something inherently wrong with the world, and was happy to discover likeminded people in the Belgrade punk scene when she was a teenager. Punk rock inspired her to try and understand society and the way in which people make it up in their heads, thus she became a social anthropologist. Sometimes, when she’s not too busy writing academic papers, she writes short fiction. She is certain that her voice sounds more nasal when she’s speaking English.
