Cutting edge technology vs technically cutting edges... Nick and J talked about mixing and mastering vinyl records, Atmos vs Sony 260AR, how to listen to immersive audio, mixing for Halloween, old school vs modern low-end, and how to rescue a snare. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guests today are Nick Townsend and J Clark joining us from Infrasonic West in Los Angeles. Nick Townsend's musical prowess is rooted in the punk rock scene. He began drumming for punk bands at the age of 16, and has been playing professionally ever since. His trained ears, and passion for music production, is owed to recording bands in his grandmother's garage. He attended the Audio Engineering School at Citrus College in Glendora, CA. He then landed his first audio job with Infrasonic Mastering in 2012 where he assisted Pete Lyman, while simultaneously learning the craft of vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting. Soon thereafter, he started his own Townsend Mastering until 2021 when he rejoined Infrasonic Los Angeles. Nick has mastered records for The Egyptian Lover, Militarie Gun, No Pressure, Fleshwater, Spanish Love Songs and many more, and specializes in vinyl mastering and lacquer cutting of over 2,000 vinyl records including artists such as Cheap Trick, Paramore, Weezer, Iron Maiden, Bad Religion, Garbage, Dr. Dre, 2pac, Grimes and more. His work can be identified by the hand scribed “NT” found on the lock groove of each vinyl. J Clark is an engineer, mixer, composer, and multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles, CA. He spent the majority of the late 90's and 2000's playing and touring in the bands Pretty Girls Make Graves, Killsadie, Jaguar Love, and Sharks Keep Moving. After moving to Los Angeles in 2010, he began composing music for ads and movies before expanding into post production; Re-Recording mixing, Sound Design, and Dialogue editing for film and television. In late 2020 he began mixing and mastering music in Dolby Atmos and Sony 360RA. His spatial credits include artists such as Jennifer Lopez, MK, The Hold Steady, Nelly, Nicky Jam, Marc Anthony, and many others. J's studio was designed and built in collaboration with PMC Loudspeakers, Dolby Laboratories, and Sony Home Entertainment and boasts an impressive 24 speakers! It's built to handle the present and future of multichannel sound for music, picture and gaming offering an 11.1.6 ATMOS and a 13.1 Sony360 array for the most precise playback and detail of your immersive projects. Today, we celebrate the 20th anniversary of Pretty Girls Make Graves' sophomore album, The New Romance. Originally released in 2003, this was the Seattle punk band's Matador Records debut. After more than a decade out of print, the album will return to us in a limited edition white vinyl pressing in stores on November 3. A deluxe digital version also lands today on digital services and features two b-sides “Magic Lights,” newly available on streaming, and a cover of Bow Wow Wow's home-taping anthem, “C-30 C-60 C-90 Go!” And what's more, singer Andrea Zollo and guitarist J. Clark guest on the latest installment of our Matador Revisionist History podcast series alongside producer Phil Ek and our host, Matt Sweeney. Pretty Girls Make Graves formed in Seattle in 2001. The members – Andrea Zollo, Derek Fudesco, J. Clark, Nick Dewitt, and Nathan Thelen – were already local underground luminaries, owing to their time in punk and hardcore bands like Death Wish Kids, Area 51, and Murder City Devils. The quintet released an EP, a handful of 7” singles, and a full-length, Good Health (Lookout! Records), before getting a cold email from Matador Records founder Chris Lombardi, who may or may not have read a positive review in Pitchfork. A deal was struck and the band decamped to the bucolic Bear Creek studio to track The New Romance with Ek. On this episode, Zollo and Clark go deep on the band's early years, talking influences (Drive Like Jehu, Ink & Dagger, Fugazi), rock band do's / don'ts, and what it's like to practice riffs in a freezing cold paper maché igloo.
This week I have independent agent Eva Alexiou-Reo. I've known Eva since I was 18 and met her when she was booking the first national touring act I was with called The Eyeliners. Eva has built an empire over the years booking such bands as Saves The Day, Jimmy Eat World, Alkaline Trio, Pretty Girls Make Graves, Mae, Hot Water Music and much more! We talk about how she got her start to where she is today! The post Eva Alexiou-Reo – Fata Booking appeared first on idobi Network.

This week, Andy is joined by Chris Appelgren. Chris took the reins at Lookout Records in 1997 after founder Larry Livermore decided he wanted to move on from the label. Having worked for the label for many years and doing artwork for many of the bands on the label, it seemed like a great opportunity. Under his watch (along with co-owners Molly Neuman and Cathy Bauer), Lookout managed to keep serving up tasty punk rock records from label vets like The Mr. T Experience and Screeching Weasel, to more angular indie-rock bands like Pretty Girls Make Graves and Engine Down. Unfortunately, due to a downward trend in album sales, and being unable to fulfill some royalty obligations to some of the label's top selling bands (Green Day, Operation Ivy, etc), the label had to close shop in 2012. But man, what a run! Besides being co-owner of one of the most iconic punk rock labels of all time, Chris is also a musician. He was the front person for The Pattern and The Peechees, played drums in The Potatomen, among other projects. Nowadays, he continues to work with bands doing graphic art for the likes of The Once and Future Band, and also has a musical project with friends covering obscure songs from the 60s and 70s. During this episode, we discuss his time with Lookout Records, as well as his time performing in The Pattern. We also discuss some of his favorite artists and he gives me his 5 desert island albums. You can find The Pattern, The Peechees & The Potatomen on streaming services. The Murder City Devils aren’t the most famous Seattle band to ever sign to Sub-Pop records and have significantly more in common with the sounds of Detroit, a city often associated with their moniker and specifically the Stooges and the MC5. When they emerged in the late nineties they were peddling a sound that harkened back to a bygone day and it’s aged beautifully. We discuss their second album on this episode but it won’t be the last to feature these badasses.
