McKay11:00 I had turned work over to some of my team. I had two guys in the Philippines working for me and to whom I turned most of my work over to, and I was amazed that they actually were capable and competent in taking over things.15:38 Philippines is just different. The experience is different. The culture is different. They are hardworking and honest and super loyal and they don't wanna steal your business. 31:00 So the biggest difference that you're seeing between what you do and others is that you're not looking for someone to just come in, do something and then leave you're hiring an employee, right? You're hiring someone who's gonna be on your team, ideally for a very long time.35:32 People always ask two questions. How do I know I'm ready to hire someone? Who do I hire first? In this episode of Tenaciously Human Podcast, we have Cory Carlson. He is a Christian, a husband, a father of three, a former executive, a speaker, an author, and a coach. As he advocates winning at home first, he talks about the early years of his career and how he navigated success, failures, and priorities in life. He shared how God moved in his life, turned around, achieved success when he seek balance in work, faith, and faith.Sneak Peek: 13:15 I think God works in mysterious ways in our lives. And you felt his hand in something like being fired, right? To me, that takes a lot of faith. And probably experience in trusting God. Were there other experiences in your life that led up to you to say, you know what? I trust God at this moment, even though I don't know all the facts. 15:49 You try, these big moments are pretty clear, but it sounds like you had these little moments along the way that you start to build [your faith. And then going forward, it's a lot easier to trust God because you've learned by degrees to.17:15 I control the input. God controls the impact. 19:16 What does that mean in, in practicality, to put home first? 22:20 We've gotta go on dates with our spouse. Otherwise, we'll become roommates. We gotta be intentional with our kids and be their loudest voice to them. Otherwise, culture's gonna be the loudest voice.28:52 Everything can be taken away from us. Right? As we start to accomplish things in our lives and, find some semblance of professional success, it's really easy to look back and think, I can trust my bank account because there are a million dollars in there, more than I can trust God, cuz he's intangible. Right? But that money can disappear. You get a certain number of followers on Instagram and then you get banned or someone kicks you off Twitter. So many of these things can get taken away really quickly. And we don't know really how intangible, how unstable our life is. The only things that we can rely on ultimately is God.Learn more about him: www.corymcarlson.comBuy the book- Win at home first www.corymcarlson.com/winathomefirstFollow him on IG: instagram.com/carlsoncoryWant to be on the show? He is a Christian, soon-to-be father of four, and the CEO and founder of Impact Suite, an award-winning self-care app that has been helping thousands of people. He is here to talk about how he started making an impact in helping people recover from addiction, and becoming a part of the journey of healing and recovery for many people. Sneak Peek: 14:27 You started this, this movement to talk about [pornography] when did it transition into not only talking about it, but helping people to recover from this? 15:49 There was no good solution. And so we decided, We need to make it free. And so all these other groups that we love and still, support and encourage people to get professional support if they need it. 19:40 It was free for youth and it still is free for youth and it will always be free for youth. So young people don't pay for premium access to the tools.20:16 That's incredible because as I reflect back on my life and my struggle with addiction, my struggle with mental health, all those sorts of things. The tools that I know now as an adult, would've been immensely valuable to me as a teenager. 29:00 I've chosen a career path that is very purpose driven in everything. I have a lot on my plateI find a lot of purpose at work and not everyone does. I get that, but even if you do or don't at work, it's important to find the purpose at home as well.40:40 If I could scream one message from the mountaintops on this topic, addiction. Recovery is that there needs to be a paradigm shift in the way that we think and talk about mental health because there's one that is not only more true but far more hopeful for individuals as they hear a message that tells them, that they can heal and they can reach lasting recovery and healing it doesn't have to be permanent.Learn more about him: linkedin.com/in/clayolsenWant to be on the show? Here's a sneak peak of the podcast:01:31 You can have professional success, you can pursue it, you should pursue it, and you can do so without losing faith, without sacrificing family. In fact, you can be empowered by those two things and that they all kind of feed off each other: faith, family, and business. When you focus on all three of those they strengthen each other and each one raises the others. 08:40 Step 1- Identify who you are09:35 If you lose your job today, does that make you a worse person? Does that change who you are? The answer is no, it doesn't change who you are at all.13:28 Step 2- Define your Success14:22 You need to look at it not just professionally, but what is your life gonna look like when you reach this goal? When you reach this vision? And most importantly, what is your life gonna look like along the journey to get there? 16:00 Step 3- Stake Your Claim17:56 Step 4- ADD by Subtraction24:40 Step 5- Mental and Emotional Awareness27:46 I find validation is such a powerful thing in the world. We talked about God, faith, money, what it means to be rich, and finances in general. Listen to this episode and be enlightened about money and faith with Yael Trusch. Sneak Peek: 07:40 If God wants you to be rich? I believe that God wants me to be rich. Do you believe that God wants everybody to be rich?08:40 We still have to operate with the perspective that God is good and God is kind, and God has a plan and a mission for you and he's gonna give you all the resources and the capabilities, and you just have to let, go and accept.10:40 How can I become less me-centered and more God-centered? 22:00 It is really important for all of us to understand the concept of trust in God. You and I, we all trust something. We trust that we're gonna wake up in the morning and there's gonna be the sun. We trust our partners. We trust our coworkers as we trust but sometimes what we fail to understand is we have to trust in something so much greater than all of that.24:00 There's not one more hour of work that I can do that's going to give me more money. I just have to do what God wants expects from me and I have a blueprint and it says you are gonna work six days a week, not seven days a week, you're gonna be off the seventh day. You're gonna be off. You're gonna close your store. You're gonna close your computer, your cell phone. There's no business, zero business, and yet you're gonna make the same amount of money.37:05 You are exactly where you are. Stay focused on the mission. Stay focused on who you are, what you can do at this moment, and what God needs from me at this moment. If I'm a mother of little children, God needs me for the children. God needs me. She teaches meditation and she's here with us to guide and teach us about meditation.Sneak Peek: 03:56 How intertwined is Buddhism and meditation? 05:00 The practice I teach “reflective meditation” is really our anchor for somebody to just sit quietly with their mind and with their life. And then when they come out of meditation to reflect upon that and then to talk about it with somebody. 07:00 Just focus on. Forget about everything else. I'd say our path emerged from the understanding that the mind is also the mind and your life and the way you feel about your life is also an object of meditation and that when you sit down and you're open or more receptive or more gentle to what your mind is saying to what you are thinking about, you're being kind and you're being actually caring to your mind and body. 24:00 If someone doesn't feel like they have a spiritual friend or they'd like another spiritual friend in their life. How would you encourage them to find that individual?32:12 Defining what success looks like in meditation39:11 Acknowledge those feelings, acknowledge those thoughts, those emotions, and release them through meditation, as opposed to just bearing them down deep and hoping that they don't resurface at some point down the road. A certified professional coach, speaker, author of "Fired-up, Fulfilled, and Free" and the host of Becoming Ourselves - The Podcast. We talked about trusting God in our lives, she shared how she found her freedom and followed her purpose.Sneak Peek: 9:05 There's kind of two schools of thought that I am debating in my head. One is that God made you this way. There are strengths to this “weakness”, right? There's a flip side to this coin and you need to embrace the challenges that come with this because it also leads to strengths. And the second is that God did create you this way. And he also created modern medicine to help you. And so which one is it? 17:40 And I was pleasing people all day long and I was overachieving all day long just for those hits of validation from outside– That maybe I was enough, but the problem with those hits is they fade. And so He reminded me that the roles and the titles and all of those things, they don't actually define who we are.And as I worked through some of that, I came to this point where I realized that I am love joy, strength, flight, and grace. That is the essence of Julie when you strip all the titles and all the roles away. And it's a reflection of Him29:00 I am choosing today to trust that God has me exactly where he wants me to be. I am choosing today to see myself the way he sees me. I am choosing to remember and be reminded of who I am and that my value and my enoughness is not tied up in my roles, but my enoughness is settled because he's enough.43:15 From a religious standpoint, I believe God communicates with us, but even from a more secular standpoint, that is where so many of these ideas and thoughts and new ways to do things come to us is in those moments of stillness. He would've never gotten to experience that miracle, that opportunity if he had not kind of run with that invitation. On a much smaller scale, like our thing is just like that too, where had we not accepted that invitation from God to kind of do something that just didn't make any sense we wouldn't have gotten to experience the corresponding miracles that followed and the blessing that was attached to it and all that stuff.22:00 We associate our worth with our net worth, right? Those 4 points are that it's a journey and not a destination, work-life balance is highly personal, it's your responsibility and nobody else's, and then it has way less to do with the amount of time you work than you think. It's a journey and not a destination 0:55Work-life balance is highly personal 2:27Your responsibility and nobody else's 5:28It has way less to do with the amount of hours you work than you think 7:19“It is a journey and not a destination. I want to talk to you guys about hope today. Hope is such an interesting thing and I think it is a necessity for all of us in life to get through the hard times and to believe that things will get better or work out in the way we are hoping. Life has been super crazy lately. We just had our 5th kid join the family and with the oldest being 4 years old, running life with 5 kids can be pretty hectic. There are a couple of things that really give me hope, which is what I want to share with you today. One thing is the hope that things will get better and that God has a plan that will ultimately lead to lasting happiness. There is another concept of the 3 act play that I like to use with act 1 being the setup of the characters and the story, act 2 is where things get harder and conflict is introduced, and then act 3 is the resolution to your story. Trying to have hope and get ahead 2:40Dealing with addictions 3:49Some things that give me hope 5:31The 3 act play 6:21The guiding higher power 10:38“We've talked a lot about on the show balancing our time, our efforts, our energies between all these competing good things in life, and when you're in the act 2 of a specific area. When I was 5 years old, I mainly stopped watching cartoons and started watching home improvement shows. I was enamored and knew that was what I was supposed to do in life. I knew this was exactly what I was supposed to do in life all the way up until one day that suddenly changed and I didn't know any more. Today I want to talk about finding your purpose in life and 3 things you can do in order to discover what that is. The 3 things that help us discover our path: The Hundred Dreams List 2:56Try a ton of different things 3:58Fail quickly 5:38“The Hundred Dreams List is not a new concept and has been around for decades and decades and decades. There's a reason why I think it has stuck around, and I find it so powerful if you spend time writing out a hundred things that you would like to do within your life. Big things, small things, everything in between, just write out what you would like to do in this life. Another question to ask as you're writing this list is ‘What would I do if I knew I could not fail. If I could do anything in this world perfectly, what would I do?' A couple different ways to phrase this question, but you start writing these dreams, and that really helps you to think.” 3:15

We often base our own identities on things that can and often do change, and if we attach our worth to those, then our worth will constantly be in flux. The question we often ask ourselves: Am I enough? 2:01The great, unchanging anchor 3:36The story of Job in the Old Testament 6:32“Once we establish who we are and whose we are, and that we are of a divine heritage, it is so much easier to overcome things. And it takes a lot of work to get to that point. Constant work I would say to continue to fortify that relationship with the anchor and to really understand what that means.” 4:37

In this episode I interview Gary Crittenden who is a great friend and mentor to me and with whom I've deeply enjoyed my association. He is a husband, father, grandfather, a Christian, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Gary is currently working as the executive director of HGGC, a mid market private equity firm, and is the former CFO of both American Express and Citigroup, some of the largest corporations in the world. Because of the unique positions he's held professionally, he is powerfully prepared to help us understand what it takes to make it to the top and how to do so while maintaining some semblance of life, family, and the things that truly matter in life. This is a rare opportunity to listen to someone who has had such vast experiences as this and I know you'll enjoy this conversation. “You can't always have everything you want because you'll always have to sacrifice something, but you can choose what that sacrifice will be.”The power of leadership 3:22Some of the leaders Gary had growing up 5:51BeautyIndustryGroup 16:28How he's able to do all these things with his family and faith 10:15How important faith and revelation were during all the growth in business 30:30How to stay strong in your principles 43:12Is quality time more important than quantity? 56:00How he was able to carve out time for family and manage huge career responsibilities 61:58Maintaining faith and humility 67:14“The Steven R. We often talk on this show about having this holistic approach to success. Having success in many areas of our life professionally, that wild professional success, but also without sacrificing or even empowered by faith and family. I want to emphasize the importance of defining what success looks like to you so that you aren't basing your level of success on what success other people are having. Focus on setting goals in these 4 areas: Intellectually, physically, spiritually, and socially. Create a vision board using 4 steps:Choose a time frame 6:50Write out one to two goals in each of the 4 categories discussed 8:02Pick a picture and a few words to represent each goal 9:07Review this daily and out loud 9:42“You have to define it for yourself, or you will be as Katy Perry described, Like a plastic bag drifting through the wind, kind of blown about. And then as Paul talks about in the Ephesians 4:14, ‘We'll be tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine.'” 2:55 To learn more, go to https://www.tenaciouslyhuman.com/

Today's guest is Amanda Blackman and she comes at us from Australia. She is a mom, soon-to-be grandmother, a Christian, entrepreneur, and a business coach. I really loved our conversation and her perspective on life, her journey to faith, and how she views wealth as a tool to bring about good to the people around her. Amanda was a married woman and was just miserable in part because of her upbringing and also just because of the situation she was in. She explains how her perspective about life and purpose has completely changed and she now lives a life of faith that guides her through all difficulties and opposition. You are gonna love this conversation with Amanda as I did. Being converted through an online chat argument 2:04Her background 6:42Sharing with other people 12:34Is it possible to have professional success and still have faith and family? 15:41Being a business owner 24:17Tight communities strengthen the world 34:12The significance of the word magnify 41:18Try vs do 47:44How to address the question of whether God will do something or not 57:54If you need God to prove himself 66:25“I have no doubt that God can say to you ‘OK, serve here, serve here, do this, go above and beyond and watch what I'll bring into your account.' Often the question is asked, " how do you create a leader?" The shortest answer is to let them lead. Just get them out there, get some mud on the tires, and see what happens. I do this for a few reasons:If you don't give someone the opportunity to fail you, you aren't giving them the opportunity to impress you.  You have to be vulnerable in order to see growth. No one grows in the comfort zoneYou'll quickly learn the strengths and weaknesses and you can coach and mentor them around that.  To learn more, go to https://www.tenaciouslyhuman.com/
