Be Bold & Do the Works Jesus Did!John 14:12-13 “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible. it is one that I read, and when I heard it, I immediately believed it. Some verses are like this in the Bible. When you read the Bible, some things are easy to take in, and others are difficult. These easy and difficult things are different for everyone. We all have different experiences when we read the Bible because we have all had different experiences throughout our lives. There is a quote by Steven R. Covey that I really like. Steven R. Covey said, “We see the world, not as it is, but as we are.” This is true for the Bible as well. We look at and interpret the things we read in the Bible with our own unique lens. For instance, if we had people letting us down our whole lives, we may read the parts of the Bible that talk about trust and struggle to believe we can trust God because we haven't been able to trust anyone on earth. If we have grown up in a very unloving environment, we may struggle with the parts of the Bible that talk about unconditional love. Other things may come easier to us. For me, I instantly loved this verse. I know the Bible is God's Word and that God chose His words very carefully. Sometimes, when we are reading the Bible, there may be a question in our minds about why they used this word vs. that word. One thing I have learned from doing Bible studies is that there is always a reason why certain words were chosen. Also, if you have done Bible studies, you have had the benefit of hearing all about the original Greek or Hebrew words that were used in the original translation and what those words meant. Sometimes, when translated, we don't have an exact word to mean what they were saying. I find Bible studies fascinating because you gain so much more insight into what the verses are really saying. Anyway, back to the verse. I heard this verse or read this verse, and I believed Jesus' word to us. I have never really been one to struggle with trust. I grew up in a loving family; I had great friends growing up, I am blessed to be able to say I was not let down by those I know and cared about often growing up. Therefore, I trust them pretty easily. But what if you don't trust easily? What if you look at that verse and say there is no way we could perform the works Jesus did? Jesus was God; of course, He performed miracles. Also, the apostles were right there with Him for 3 years during His ministry. Of course, they could do miracles too. We can all usually agree that Jesus did miracles when He walked the earth, and we can also usually agree that the apostles were sent out, and they performed miracles, too. We run into trouble by trying to believe we can do signs and wonders in today's world. Who are we? We are not holy enough; we are not worthy of that power and authority. I agree with both of those statements and yet Jesus still says we will do the works that He did and even greater works than He did. How is this possible? It is possible through the Holy Spirit. Did you ever realize or notice that no single miracle was recorded in the Gospels before Jesus was baptized? Jesus was fully human and fully God the entire time He walked the earth. There was nothing stopping Jesus from performing miracles during the first 30 years of His life. However, He chose to wait until after He was baptized and received the Holy Spirit to start performing miracles. This is something I recently found out and found fascinating. It was unsurprising to me that Jesus did miracles in the Bible; he is God, after all. I didn't know that Jesus didn't use his divinity to perform miracles. He used the Holy Spirit, working through Him to perform the miracles. He chose to put his divinity aside and act from his human nature, with the help of the Holy Spirit, because it would be greater glory for God. St. Lawrence of Brindisi explains it like this:"Christ came into the world to do battle against Satan, to do away with idolatry, and to turn the world to faith and piety and the worship of the true God. He could have accomplished this by using the weapons of his might and coming as he will come to judge, in glory and majesty… But in order that his victory might be the more glorious, he willed to fight Satan in our weak flesh. It is as if an unarmed man, right-hand bound, were to fight with his left hand alone against a powerful enemy; if he emerged victorious, his victory would be regarded as all the more glorious. So Christ conquered Satan with the right hand of his divinity bound, and used against him only the left hand of his weak humanity.”Is this new to you, too? Did you know that God performed these miracles and defeated satan without using his divinity? He relied on the power of the Holy Spirit working through Him. Do you know why this changes everything? It changes everything because Jesus also gave us the Holy Spirit to dwell within us. If you are baptized, then you will have the Holy Spirit living inside of you. If you have the Holy Spirit living inside of you, then you have the power to defeat Satan and to perform works as Jesus did. Another one of my favorite verses is Romans 8:11: “ The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you…” I wish we all knew how much power we actually have inside our frail human bodies. This verse can be scary to many people. Wait, if I can perform works like Jesus did, does that mean I have to travel worldwide and be a missionary like the disciples were? No, you don't have to travel anywhere if you don't feel called to do that. They talked about ministering to your sphere of influence in my class. You can start small. Be an example to your family, your friends, and your co-workers. Let's read the verse again, “Amen, amen, I say to you, whoever believes in me will do the works that I do, and will do greater ones than these, because I am going to the Father. And whatever you ask in my name, I will do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.”If you could believe and adopt this verse as your own personal truth, how much greater would your life be? How great would it be to do works like Jesus did? How great would it be to be able to heal a loved one? Did you know there are people doing this every day? Did you know there are lots of people who have read this verse, decided to believe it, and are now living out a supernatural lifestyle with the power of the Holy Spirit? The last line of the verse says, “If you ask anything of me in my name, I will do it.” How awesome of a promise is that? God has so much more for us, and we aren't asking for it. We aren't going to God to ask Him what He has for us. Why are we choosing to live a normal life when God is offering us a supernatural one of signs and wonders? You might be thinking, that is great for you, Catherine. I am glad you believe this verse, and you want that life, but I am happy with mine as is. If this is what you are thinking, I challenge you over this next week or so to bring this to prayer. I challenge you to be brave enough to talk to God about it. Tell Him how you feel about this verse and ask Him if He has anything to say to you about it. When we do signs and wonders, we build up people's faith. Don't you think this world needs some faith-building right now? Look at the day of Pentecost; 3,000 were baptized on that day. I know this verse can be scary. I know the thought of us healing or performing miracles is strange to most of us. I know it is way outside of our comfort zone. I also know God is calling us all to it. I also know that this world needs people willing to step outside their comfort zone. God needs people who will step out in faith, knowing they have the Holy Spirit inside them and that He will guide them. If this verse is something that you struggle with, write it down and look at it often over the next month. Bring it to God and ask Him to show you how this applies to your life. Ask God what He wants you to do with this verse. Be brave and bold. If you ask the Holy Spirit for help, He will help you. Just start small. Step out in faith and ask a loved one if they want you to pray for them. If you spend time with God, He will guide you on this journey. He will lead you to where you need to go. We must be brave enough to say three small words, “Use me, Lord.” Can you be brave enough to say those words? Can we be Christ's hands and feet here on earth? Remember, we have a good, good Father. He is going to ease you into this lifestyle. He will meet you where you are and build your faith along the way. Trust Him and give Him permission to work in your life; give Him permission to use you, and He will. Dear Heavenly Father, I ask you to bless all those listening to this episode today. Lord, we ask you to send your angels to prepare the way for everyone listening to hear this message today. We pray you give us the courage to believe this verse and to step out in faith, knowing you have given us the power of the Holy Spirit to help us do your work here on earth. Lord, the world needs you more than ever, and if we can bring you to others, please show us how. Show us what you want each of us to do. Reveal to us what this verse means for each of us in our lives. We love you, Lord; you are incredible. We are so grateful you gave us the Holy Spirit. Lord, you are the almighty one, the king of kings and the Lord of Lords. You are the light of the world. We ask all of this in accordance with your will and in Jesus' holy name. Amen!Thank you so much for joining me on this journey to walk boldly with Jesus. I look forward to spending time with you again tomorrow. With the celebration of our independence on July 4th, we talk a lot about freedom, liberty, and independence. One of the other words that comes to mind when I think of independence is CHOICE. The ability to choose. We were given the gift of agency and freedom to choose from the very beginning. In the premortal existence, this was the basis of the plan of redemption. Choice. It goes against our very nature when we feel like we are without choice. This isn't just disturbing spiritually, but also physically. When we feel like we don't have a choice, our Autonomic Nervous System responds with fight, flight, or freeze. Do you put up a fight when you feel like you are being forced? Do you run, avoid, or hide? Or do you do nothing? Freeze. This is all a protective mechanism to establish safety! The one phrase, "I Have To" seems harmless, but it can be signaling danger, because it communicates no choice. Steven R. Covey calls this reactive language. It's no wonder many times we feel trapped, helpless, and prisoners to our own lives that we chose! Proactive language is "I Choose To." I choose the option and the consequence that follows. Listen in to hear more about independence and choice, and swap "have to" to "choose to!"
Referencer: The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People' af Steven R. On this episode of Here's Where It Gets Interesting, Sharon speaks with author Cynthia Covey Haller. Cynthia shares the mantra that her late father, Steven R. Covey, the author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, aspired to during the last decade of his life, and that was to live life in crescendo. Cynthia expands on this concept, defining it as living life with the goal to keep learning, expanding, and growing with the knowledge that your most important work is always ahead of you. In this episode I interview Gary Crittenden who is a great friend and mentor to me and with whom I've deeply enjoyed my association. He is a husband, father, grandfather, a Christian, and a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Proceed with caution.Great leadership and great management are not the same. They are both a necessity based on purpose and timing.James Bond is dead and that's tough for those of us that were raised on Bond. The vast majority of us unconsciously try to find our way back to the path of least resistance or the one that feels most familiar, comfortable, and safe; this is extremely detrimental to your growth, your excellence, and greatness, but it's a very hard natural tendency to break. GUEST: Karen Green is executive director at Cat Adoption Team, the Pacific Northwest's largest nonprofit, feline-only animal shelter. Before that, she was senior director at the Alliance for Contraception in Cats & Dogs and assistant director of the No More Homeless Pets program at Best Friends Animal Society. MAIN QUESTION: How can animal organizations build a healthy workplace culture, which is so important in a competitive job market? TAKEAWAYS: Open two-way communication is key to having a strong, positive organizational structure. If there's a program or policy that isn't working, you need to know – so staff needs to have a way to share such information with people who can fix the problem. Ask for feedback and make it safe for people to give feedback by demonstrating your trustworthiness. Implement suggestions when they make sense. If you don't plan to implement someone's ideas or suggestions, they are more likely to accept your decision if they feel that their concerns were heard. Repeat back what the person said to make sure you understood before explaining your own position. Create an environment where people can have a good work-life balance through reasonable expectations and work hours. When people are at work, they should be working and when off, they should be encouraged to care for the other parts of their lives. Examine staffing levels and processes to support this. Gently encourage people who check in when off work by saying something like, “Aren't you supposed to be on vacation?” Sometimes there will be times you just need to put in extra hours, perhaps for a budget deadline, a special event, or a large rescue situation. But make these the exception, not the rule, so that overwork does not create burnout. Address conflicts and issues when they come up. Little problems become big problems over time. One of the biggest challenges for many entrepreneurs is that they solve a particular problem, but other people also solve the same problem. It leads to potential clients often wondering why they should choose you over someone else and what makes you different from your competition. You need to break down your service so someone else can understand the value of what you offer. If you can do that, it helps people see their issue from a different perspective. It makes it easier for you to sell the process and for the client to choose you. #111: Drugs, Crime & Real Estate Investing On this week’s show Gary chats Edward Fajardo, an investor on the path to greatness, it was an inspiring and sometimes dark conversation. Growing up in Parkdale, Edward was exposed to crime, drugs and a seemingly hopeless future, but got himself out, after using and selling drugs, robbing others, etc. He eventually turned to RE investing, but made a ton of rookie mistakes. This is a story that shows you can start no matter where you came from, or where you are in your life, it’s a matter of CHOICE. Edward still has his 9-5 job, and wanted to share his story about his beginnings in real estate. WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: How your CHOICES can radically change your life, no matter how old you are His early lifestyle was not about ego, but simply survival Some have said 90% mindset and 10% skills Cory McKinnon said 70% mindset, 20% environment, 10% skill set How Edward’s two lives were colliding - personal and work He describes himself as a ‘functioning’ addict How he realized if he didn’t stop drugs he’d lose everything He began a path of self discovery - how where he came from influenced him, but it was NOT his future, and it began with the Joe Rogan podcast He then began listening to health and wellness podcasts, then RE podcasts He went broke from RE investing initially and then got into debt again Why he got a SECOND job to pay debt off, to WORK MORE TO PAY OFF THE BILLS Working weekends, nights, not seeing his family When a coworker mentioned investing for passive income with none of her own money, Edward was interested! His first property was buy/hold with tenants in place Why reserves are important on new buys Tenants didn’t pay rent Why he hired a property manager after 3 months Why he moved to the BRRRR strategy And MORE! Edward’s Bio Edward has goals and aspirations of changing the trajectory of his family’s legacy. As a second-generation Filipino-Canadian born in Parkdale, Toronto Ontario he struggles with self-limiting beliefs of identity and worthiness. Faced with environmental conditions that are more suitable for a life of drugs and crime, Edward battled addiction and perceived feelings of inadequacies. It wasn’t until his environment changed did he understand that his learnt behaviour was not permanent. This led him on a path of personal-development and a self-directed learning approach. Fast forward to present, with his new understanding of good debt vs bad debt, assets vs liabilities, Edward has carved a niche for himself as a self-proclaimed ‘late bloomer’. He is utilizing the powerful tools of real estate investing alongside his new skillset of trading Stock Options to engineer his lifestyle. Scaling his real estate portfolio through personal and joint ventures partnerships, Edward uses a combination of BRRRR and buy and hold strategies to help others create generational wealth and improve ROT (return on time). I mentioned a little while ago how I hired a new coach, and it’s been really, really good. He’s one of the main guys over at The One Thing, his name is Jeff. It’s interesting because I read The One Thing book a while ago and I remember, I think when I read it I didn’t like it. I think at the time we had just launched 12 companies in a year. And I was bitter against it, but everyone kept recommending it to me. That book and the Essentials came out at similar times and everyone was like, “you gotta read them.” So I read them both and I was just like, “They want me to focus on one thing. I hate that idea.” So I kind of didn’t like the books. And fast forward to last week, I just kind of got back into it in the last week. I went and listened to a bunch of podcasts from The One Thing, I started re-reading the book, I got the main dude coaching me Monday mornings and it’s really, really cool. What’s interesting is, since he started coaching me, I’ve had this big epiphany, big aha, big realization inside, and then as I’ve been coaching the inner circle the last two days, I’m watching the people who are leveling up really, really quickly and there’s a consistent theme behind all the people who are growing fast versus who…..everyone’s growing, but the ones who are really quick. It’s interesting thing, it’s funny, the thing that I got in my coaching session was, it came back to Steven R. Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, which I read back in high school. It was start with the end in mind. It’s been interesting, as I’ve been going through the coaching stuff. Man the first, it feels like it’s been like a month because I move pretty quick on stuff. But the first exercise he had me do was figure out, what is your someday goal? Where do you want to be someday? So it’s not like 5 years from now, or 10 years, like in the future, where is it you really want to go? It’s been interesting as I’ve kind of done this exercise, I can walk you guys through what it is, but it’s morphed, 3 or 4 times to radically different things and I one of the big aha’s I realized when I went through this exercise is that literally my someday goal, I achieved it like 18 months ago. So the last 18 months I’ve been wandering without really a focus or a goal other than just more, which is interesting. So he’s had me keep focusing, what’s your someday goal? Begin with the end in mind. What are we trying to get to? So I figured out initially, here’s my someday goal, and someday goal can be about your business, you personally, your relationships, your spirituality, whatever you’re trying to figure out for yourself. Then he came back and said, “Okay, what do you have to had accomplished within 5 years to keep you on track for your someday goal?” So I was like, “Okay well, to have that I need to have this in place, these things need to be in place in the next 5 years.” And he came back and said, “Okay, what do you need within a year to be able to hit your 5 year goal? And what do you need by the end of this year to hit your one year goal? And what do you need by the end of this week to hit your yearend goal? Or your month goal?” So as you do this it’s interesting because you start getting more and more clear on all the steps. It was funny because it was like, as I did that, as I identified, had the end in mind, I started going back forward and I got to the things I needed to do. I looked at my to-do list and none of the things on my to-do list actually got me any closer to my someday goal. All the sudden I realized that I’m doing all these to-do’s that are good, they make me feel good, I check off the box, but none of them are actually moving me towards what I’m really wanting. I was like, well what’s the one thing I need to do today that’s going to help me hit my goal for the end of this week, which will hit my goal for the end of the month, blah blah, blah, all the way to the thing. And as I started asking those questions it blew my mind what the one thing was that I needed to focus on. It was not by any stretch what I thought it was going to be, what I assumed was the most important thing. And after this exercise he wanted me to come back and refine it and change things. So I kept getting….my someday goal changed three or four times and I started realizing as I was looking at that, it took me a while to figure it out. In fact, I still don’t know if I have it completely figured out. But the message I want to share with you guys is just that. Beginning with the end in mind. Again, the inner circle members having the most success is because they have a very clear end in mind. What is it they are trying to accomplish? And from there it’s easy to reverse engineer the funnels and make that happen. People who are struggling, they’re building funnels to be able to sell a product or a service, not with the end in mind. Does that make sense? It’s a little intricacy, but it’s interesting. I’ve had this really cool experience over the last two days, to kind of reflect I’m listening to all my entrepreneurs talk and teach and share what they’re doing and really start thinking more and more, what is the end? I need to know really clearly for my business, I need to begin with the end in mind. Or is my goal to get people in Clickfunnels? Is my goal to get people in Two Comma Club Coaching? Is my goal to get people into Inner Circle? What is the actual end goal? As soon as you identify it, that becomes the end goal and it becomes easy to see, well if that’s it, here are the funnels I need to reverse engineer to get people so that they will come up into that thing. For example, Dean Holland, he’s been in my inner circle for 3 years now. He basically over the last few months shut his entire company down and rebuilt it from the ground up but this time with a definite, very clear end in mind. This is where I’m trying to go. Because of that built out the funnels very simply in order, he launched and in the first 28 days built up $106,000 recurring income. Just because he began with an end in mind. So I think most of us, including me. I’m guilty of this as well, that’s been my big thing for the last 2 days, what’s the end goal. From a business standpoint, from a life standpoint, but also the customer journey, the value ladder. I talk a lot about in the Dotcom Secrets book, this value ladder, taking somebody through. But I would say even my value ladder isn’t completely clearly defined. It’s morphed and changed so much and I’m really coming back now and figuring that out. Dana Derricks when he was doing his presentation he was talking about his big aha. He said that us as creators want to keep creating and creating and creating. He said because of that, “If I look at my value ladder it kind of goes up a little and then it splits off in three different places. Some of those go up and some don’t and it gets really mushy really quick.” He realized he had to clearly define the value ladder. We’re going from here to here to here. So now he’s beginning with the end in mind. And what he said was interesting. It’s was funny because it’s something that I, a recurring thought I’ve had in my mind as well. Okay, I can’t keep creating new stuff that just spurts off my value ladder and shifts people all over the place. If I need to get my creative juices out there and just create something, the things I create need to be on the front end of the value ladder. They should only be free plus shipping or they should only be low ticket things to get somebody in, but the back of the value ladder should never shift, never change. That should be just a thing that’s there. And man, I just resonate with that. I was like, okay I obviously have my value ladder, I’ve got things in place, but I need to really specify this is the path, the process, the order and then just focus on the front end stuff. So it’s exciting. The last thing I wanted to kind of say is, again so many of us start our business like, here’s a product and we start building funnels based on that product. There’s nothing wrong with that. That’s how most people do it. It’s how I’ve done it a lot of times. Because of that, I think we get lost in the weeds of where we’re trying to go and often times we never get there because we don’t know where we’re going. And again, as I’ve been working with my coach on this, which has been really fun. It’s been cool because I’m clearly defining my someday goal, clearly defining the end and then from there I can reverse engineer all the pieces I need to make that happen. I think the same thing is true with funnels. It’s just begin with the end in mind. What’s the top of the value ladder? Where do you really want to take people? Figure that out and then reverse engineer, to do that here are the funnels I need. You got a path and a process. Anyway, it’s exciting. I love it. I love this game. I love my entrepreneurs. I love the inner circle. I love all of you guys. I love Clickfunnels. I’m having the time of my life. And hopefully, also I’m helping. I’m doing my best. It’s funny, I was reading, somebody I care about wrote a really cool post about what we do. And I was reading it and in the comments 3 or 4 people who were like, “I just don’t like Russell. I can’t connect with him. I don’t like his energy. I don’t like…” Whatever. It just kills me. It’s tough because I’m always trying to give and serve and do whatever I can and I hate when I don’t connect with everybody. But that’s okay as well. Hopefully my message gets to you and you’re able to take whatever it is you share out to people. And people connect with you, people I would never connect with. Hopefully you can connect with them and change them. So that’s one of my goals. Hopefully I connect with you and if I do, that’s the key. Take your energy, get out there, share your message with other people and change the world the way you can. Because unfortunately not everyone is always going to like me. And that’s the same for you. Not everyone’s going to like you. But the people who do, they’ll hear your voice and they’ll come to you and you’ll be able to help them and serve them and it’ll make the quality of their life so much better, which in return will make the quality of your life so much better. So that’s all I got tonight you guys. Appreciate you all, see you guys soon. Bye.

Core Chakra Meditation + Full Show Notes available at: www.valerielavignelife.com/79 [00:45] Previous Confidence Episodes: Episode 68: Taking the Big Leap Out of Your Comfort Zone Episode 53: How to Build Your Confidence Tool Kit Episode 28: Know Your Worth [01:16] Chakras are energy centres in the body, and there are seven main energy centres that run from the base of your spine, upward to the crown of your head. First Chakra, Root (Episode 64) Second Chakra, Sacral Third Chakra, Solar Plexus or Core Fourth Chakra, Heart Fifth, Throat (Episode 58) Sixth Chakra, Third Eye (Episode 71) Seventh Chakra, Crown [2:27] Today, I'll be focusing on the 3rd Chakra, the core, or solar plexus. The meaning of this energy centre; or the function is transformation. In Sanskrit the name for the Core Chakra is “Manipura” meaning “lustrous gem.” Along with the locations and sanskrit names, each chakra has an element, colour, purpose, issues, identity, demon, characteristics, and so much more. The themes around the third chakra will be centred around energy, activity, self-esteem, power, self-definition, and confidence. This chakra is represented by the colour yellow. Power and confidence will be key words in our discussion today. This is an area for self-definition, realization of separateness, and independence. It's clear from this information alone that it is a very important energy centre, as transformation is the essential function of the third chakra. Confidence and power are then integral pieces to the solar plexus chakra as it is associated with the element fire. Fire creates physical transformation through its power; and we have an inner fire that represents our self-confidence. Pretty cool right? [3:50] Okay, let's talk about that word “power.” As we know, words can have different meanings depending on how we interpret them. But I think power is one of those words that can be taken VERY differently. If you had asked me, maybe when I was a little girl, what I thought “power” meant, at the time I would have probably had an answer along the lines of an evil stepmom or witch who wants to take something from an innocent and powerless princess. Even without the influence of disney princess movies, we still see people or groups who “want” power, “gain” power, “have power over” etc. There are many overbearing and negative attachments or connotations to the word. Personally, this is something that I've learned for myself, and had to unlearn. It wasn't just the word power, but also words similar to it. For example: Aggressive, Bossy, Difficult, Too Much, Awkward [4:58] Let me backtrack a bit. I host guests on the bonus episodes of this show, and one of my rapid fire questions that I ask each guest at the end of the show is: “what does empowerment mean to you?” The answers I get are different and amazing and the word empower has the word “power” in it. It's about giving power and confidence and strength and this was one of my goals or intentions for the women's empowerment show. [5:27] I know many of the listeners are also women in business or leadership roles, and you may have heard, or been called some of the words I've mentioned above. But today we're going to flip the script a bit. Because truthfully, nothing has meaning until we give it meaning. Including other people's words or labels. SO for the women out there who are being called “Aggressive” I want you to tap into your inner power and strength and swap aggressive with “Assertive.” Show your confidence, stand in your power. This is a big one for me: I've been called “Bossy” a lot, but we're now switching that to “Leading.” Keep leading ladies, you are a guide, a leader, an influencer, and you are important. “Difficult” is another one that comes up, but is that true, or are we being “Honest + Truth Telling?” Sometimes the truth is difficult. Being honest can be tough at times, especially when no one else is stepping up to the plate, but someone's got to do it babe, and *high* forkin *five* if that's you. What about when someone calls you “too much” or “so extra”? I say, “KEEP TAKING UP SPACE!” Let your light shine! Your inner fire is bright and if that is your authentic self showing up, then stand tall and wear your crown girl! Last one, “awkward” cringy. I know. But maybe these are the women who are asking tough questions, and yeah, that can get real awko taco - but you know what - just like telling the truth and speaking honestly, asking tough questions is necessary. But power doesn't have to be based on struggle and opposition between two things. Power can mean what we want it to mean, and today I want us to rewrite our scripts in the ways we need to so that we can feel empowered in our inner power. Not over any other person, but rather power over our inner demons and negative mindset or self talk. [7:51] MY FAVOURITE CHAKRA BOOK: Eastern Body, Western Mindby Anodea Judith: "To restructure the way we think of power and to channel and contain that power within our own being is the challenge of the third chakra. It transforms us, igniting our life with purpose. To have true power emanating from within renew the joy of being alive.” [8:18] Okay… so what do we need to reclaim our power? Well, like I mentioned before, it's a new script! It's a new definition of power that elevates us out of struggle and into transformation. It pulls us out of our past and into the future. It's a shift in a person to be inspiring, strengthening, and empowering to ourselves and to others. [8:49] We can start by investigating the signs, signals, and information that our body sends us on a constant basis. Signs of a healthy solar plexus chakra include: Someone who is responsible and reliable Balanced, and effective will A warmth in personality Confidence and a sense of personal power Spontaneity, playfulness and a sense of humour And also someone who is able to meet challenges [9:16]As with all the chakras, the goal is to balance the energy centre so that our rainbow of chakras can flow and our body can be in alignment. However, there are times when our chakras become underactive, and overactive. This is also known as deficiency and excess, respectively. Here are the signs of Core Chakra Deficiency: Low energy Poor self-discipline, low self-esteem Poor digestions Collapsed middle of the body; bad posture Victim mentality, quick to blame others Emotionally or physically cold [9:53] Signs of an excessive Core chakra: Overly aggressive, dominiating, controlling The need to be right or have the last word Manipulative, power hungry Violent outbursts Stubbornness Arrogant [10:07] Before we get into how to properly balance this energy centre let's unfold the petals of the third chakra some more. As we reach the third chakra we are climbing toward the upper level of the chakras. This is a lower level chakra where we start to become more aware of ourselves as individuals in the world. A necessary third chakra achievement is independence and autonomy. This is a very great piece from Eastern Body, Western Mind: “Autonomy is essential for personal responsibility. If we cannot see ourselves as separate beings, we cannot take responsibility for our actions.” [10:49] I believe being able to take responsibility for our own actions is what makes someone a mature adult. I also believe it's part of our journey and our souls journey to understand and see our INDIVIDUATION. We begin to wake up into a larger awareness of the world, and our role in it. We discover ourselves as whole, independent beings, with our own personal strength and power. We start to develop our strength, power and independence when we overcome challenges, and begin to define ourselves. [11:21] While creating our own identity, we also form our EGO. This is the conscious element of the Self according to Carl Jung. It's sort of the mediator between the inner and outer experience. I won't get into it too much today, but basically - for my business babes out there - it's essentially the CEO of the Self. It creates defenses to protect our vulnerability, it forms the statement of who we are, and it organizes the consciousness of our self-definition. The key is to have a well-functioning ego that isn't overpowering, but keeps us safe, engaged, and consistent in our Self. It keeps our inner energy balanced. [12:05] SELF-ESTEEM is another important piece of our third chakra. Energetic strength requires self-esteem, and with even a basic level of trust in ourselves, we can better face the unknown. This is the part of ourselves that stays consistent when faced with a challenge. It's the part of ourselves that doesn't fall apart when things go wrong, and the part that knows it's okay to make mistakes. Previous Episodes on Confidence + Self Esteem: Episode 48: What to Do When Fear Shows Up Episode 63: How to Fail + Make Happiness Your Compass It's important for all areas of our health for our self-worth and self-esteem to be high. When we feel worthy, we are more likely to take care of ourselves and this in turn raises our vibration to attract higher quality vibrations of people, opportunity, and experiences into our lives. When people are taking better care of themselves, the feel good, and who doesn't want to feel good? [13:19] I started listening to the audio version of 7 Habits of Highly Effective Peopleby Steven R. Covey, and the first habit mentioned in the best-selling book, is being “PROACTIVE.” Being proactive is the opposite of reactive (which is third chakra excess) or inactive (third chakra deficiency). Proactivity is all about choosing your actions, rather than controlling them or letting them be controlled by you. It starts deep in a mindset and shapes our daily behaviours. Proactive people take responsibility for creating their future. Proactive people believe they influence their environment. They don't wait to see what happens, and they are not victims of circumstance. Practivity takes initiative and will. [14:10] Of course it all adds up to our personal POWER. Here is another clip from Anodea Judith's book: “From the latin root podere, meaning “to be able,” power is the ability to make change and exists for one reason only - transformation. When the old has outgrown its purpose, it is time to transform it into something new. Power is not a thing, but a way. It is a process of becoming real. We have power when we dare to live authentically, when we reach inside ourselves and tell the naked truth. The more we dare to take risks, to questions, to be true to yourself, the easier it becomes. Power comes when we are willing to make mistakes and to be responsible for them, to learn from them, and to correct them.” [15:04] The third chakra is the engine to our power. Consider the following questions when reflecting on your personal power: Do I take responsibility in my actions? How strong is my self-esteem? Am I practicing proactivity? What is my current posture position telling me? Am I living authentically? Where in my life am I playing small? Who do I know that embodies personal power and a balanced third chakra? Where in my life can I take more risks? I wrote these questions with the intention for us to dig a little deeper. I want us to really unfold our core chakra petals so that we can begin to heal this energy centre. When it comes to healing our chakras, what we're most often doing is balancing them. Start by figuring out if your Solar Plexus chakra is deficient or excess, and then go from there. [16:06] Healing deficiency will take some time as the energy must be built up slowly. Think of it like kindling a fire, we will gain strength little by little with a strong foundation that will create lasting change and strength. Working on how we fuel the fire is similar to how we are fueling our bodies. Choosing to take better care of ourselves means consuming healthy foods that give us energy and vitality, along with moving our body to build physical strength and mental clarity. We are looking for both nourishment and support. Listen to last week's episode all about staying consistent with your wellness, to help you create a healthy lifestyle routine to build up a deficient core chakra. Episode 78: How to Stay Consistent with Your Wellness [16:51] When it comes to healing excess, there will be more energy, and this energy needs to be moved aka rerouted to other chakras. This healing will require more stillness, and quite. I have a free mediation available to help balance the core chakra. This is for both balancing deficiency and excess. It might sound counter-productive, or counter intuitive, but scheduling downtime for the “art doing nothing” or practicing relaxing, restorative, or gentle yoga, can also be an important strategy for an overactive third chakra. As they are typically type-a people, this can be tough, however taking time away from goals or work is very important for the health of the solar plexus chakra. [17:52] Have fun! Be playful! Be spontaneous! Laugh, and dance and let go of the need to be safe. This is not our intention in the world. Building your courage and confidence will take practice. You will make steps, leaps, and bounds toward your goals, moving further and further out of your comfort zone as you G R O W & GLOW! Keep growing, learning, and expanding! Keep playing and loving yourself deeply. YOU. YOU my darling are an incredible, limitless being. Everything you need is already yours, and the rest you will learn and gain along the way. Find that inner light and let it shine. Let the fire blaze and burn and brighten! Be the light and inspiration for others to shine their light too. Your power lies within you. It has always been there and will always be there. Always, always remember that no one can take your power… unless you let them. Remember that it is SO OKAY to make mistakes. Learn to laugh at yourself sometimes.

As I continue to do my best to build my businesses, the thought of the P/PC balance comes to mind as my business gets larger. The P/PC balance is a principle that anyone can use in their everyday life. What P/PC actually comes from is the book 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven R. Covey. Show Notes: https://masterpassiveincome.com/88 Free Investing Course: https://masterpassiveincome.com/freecourse I’ve wondered how I could keep my P/PC balance in the proper order. P/PC balance is a pattern of effectiveness that is in natural law and is all around us. P stands for Production and the PC stands for Production Capability. The P/PC balance comes into play when a person does not mange their time, resources, and energy well. This is when the P/PC balance gets thrown off. Let’s look further into how we can keep our P/PC Balance aligned well. What Is the P/PC Balance? P = Production PC = Production Capabilities

It is not an understatement to say that today’s interview changed my soul! I was so moved by Roz Savage’s story and the more I dove into it the more captivated I became. Roz is the very first woman to row solo across the world’s biggest oceans. She holds 4 Guinness World Records for rowing. We spent over an hour to talk about what triggered her to leave her “perfect on paper life” and set out on a path to completely rewrite the course of her life. When she set out on this path she didn’t know how to row, she ended her marriage and said goodbye to a regular income. She does acknowledge early on in our conversation that she is privileged to have chosen her adversity, knowing it wasn’t thrust upon her by a tragedy. But no matter which way the adversity comes to you, she is certain that the learning potential is equal to the struggle. “The scale of the learning is directly correlated to the scale of the struggle to get there.” ~ Roz Savage If you have that feeling that there must be “more” or are looking for the courage to make a change you know you should, this conversation is for you! You will be left thinking, as I was, can you change your life as dramatically as Roz did? The answer is yes! You can find your way out of the waiting room too! I’d love to hear what you think of this conversation and how you see it translating to your own life. Be sure to comment below or connect with me on Instagram to tell me all about it. More About Roz Savage Roz Savage is the first (and so far only) woman to row solo across the world’s “Big Three” oceans: Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian. It was an unexpected career move for a former management consultant who doesn’t particularly enjoy exercise. She was inspired to brave the oceans when she realized two things: 1) we are all capable of much more than we tend to believe we are, and 2) we need to make some changes if we're going to live healthy lives on a thriving planet. So she used her voyages to expand her own limits and to promote sustainable living. She now writes, speaks, and lectures on sustainability, courage, resilience, and transformation. You can connect with Roz via her website, or Twitter. In This Episode, We Talk About How her transformation began She feels fortunate that she chose her adversity and loss and that it wasn’t thrust upon her through tragedy The idea that losing everything you think is important can actually be completely liberating Roz’s moment of impact - the moment that changed everything for her The magic that happened when she started saying yes to her soul’s longing Her environmental awakening that happened on a pilgrimage in Peru - she became on fire about this and desperate to do something How she got started with rowing and how she got the idea to row across the Atlantic Why she felt that the universe had her back during her expedition Her preparation for the row across the Atlantic which was a 3 ½ month voyage The scariest moments during her row across the Atlantic Her technique for shifting her thoughts away from fear and negativity How she felt when she was approaching the end of her journey - 103 days in the Atlantic How she felt after she got off the boat and how she recovered How she integrated her new self into her life after she got off the boat Who Roz thinks she is now and what she is working on next Why she thinks we need a new story about what it means to be a human on planet earth - a balance of the masculine and feminine It took me 5 million oar strokes to get me across 3 oceans And so much more! Today’s episode I will talk about the importance of honesty and integrity because this will be the backbone of your life as a human being with dignity. Today’s book mention is Steven R. Covey‘s 7 habits of highly effective people. By far the best book when it comes to observing yourself through another set of glasses or lenses. Great book, N°1 in my humble opinion. Stay tuned and enjoy the show.

Kurt Francom, Executive Director of Leading Saints, flies solo for this episode as he talks about some invisible habits some leaders have that self-sabotage their leadership and diminish those around them. Highlights 4:40 Invitation to become more reflective and ask yourself if you are possibly doing some of these things without realizing it 1. Creating a culture of unquestioned obedience to what the leader directs (6:00) This happens with the best intentions6:30 Common example: Primary President doesn't hear about changes in the Primary until it is announced in Sacrament Meeting because the Bishop is not giving them autonomy over their auxiliary9:00 From Dan Pink's book, "Drive", three things every individual looks for: autonomy, mastery (becoming proficient at what they do), purpose (my opinions matter; I'm making a difference) What to do about it: 10:50 Bishops should turn callings over to the auxiliaries, and then the bishopric can facilitate and encourage auxiliary leaders13:20 Ask the Ward Council/counselors: How are decisions being made? Is this a problem?13:40 One-to-one monthly interviews with your auxiliary leaders and counselors 2. A leader's lack of motivation to acquire accurate self-awareness by seeking-out alternative perspectives and general leadership training (16:15) 17:00 Self-awareness about your approachability as a leaderSubconsciously sabotaging difficult conversations18:15 Story of Seminary/Institute teacher who always had the answer to questions19:10 It's not about having the right answer, but about having the conversation What to do about it: 20:00 Ask, "How approachable am I?" and create a safe circumstance for others to come to you20:40 Seek leadership training from every source possible 21:50 Elder Bednar's leadership skills came from decades of experience as a professor and author, not simply because he is an apostle 23:30 Pick up a book23:40 Seek out other resources such as conferences, websites, therapists, Leading Saints, etc. 3. Providing no venue to experience real connection (27:30) 28:00 Kurt's experience at Wild at Heart Boot Camp: Men talking and connecting in ways that they don't normally experience in elders quorum30:35 "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation" (Thoreau)31:55 Never let a quorum meeting become another Sunday School class; create more connection What to do about it: 32:45 Create vulnerabilitySit in a circle33:35 Stimulate the group with questions34:40 Brene Brown's books about vulnerability and shame35:55 The leader needs to lead out with vulnerability37:20 Vulnerability leads to trust 4. Church/family imbalance: An excessive emphasis on the importance of family responsibility that causes individuals/families to disengage with the Church (and vice versa) (38:10) 39:45 Quote from "The Divine Center," by Steven R. Covey41:25 Culture shifting to putting the family first and losing the balance with church service What to do about it: 42:40 Talk about this dynamic as a bishopric and as a ward43:10 Infuse your ward, Relief Society, or quorum with more purpose/vision 5. Creating unintentional shame (44:00) 44:40 Shame is the greatest counterfeit that the adversary uses instead of guilt45:45 Shame comes with the best intentions but creates a dynamic of unattainable perfectionism 46:30 Quote from Brené Brown, from her book "Dare to Lead" What to do about it: 47:20 Shame comes when the focus is on the behavior48:00 Jane Clayson: Turn up the doctrine of grace 6. Too many targets and no vision (48:40) Every leader has a different inspired focus, so we end up trying to do it all52:50 Doing it all leads to overwhelm53:05 You have to give your people one target What to do about it: 54:00 Have a clear objective and goal and unify around itCreate a vision statement and give people a purposeAsk the difficult questions: How can we make these into one target 7. Excessive gestures of niceness,

In this months episode, the month of May, I will be discussing 'The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People' by Steven R. Covey (5*), 'A Higher Loyalty' by James Comey (4*) and 'Extreme Ownership' by Jacko Willink and Leif Babin (4*). --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oneminutebookreview/message
Today I will be reviewing The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen R. Covey. One of the most influential business books of the twentieth century, Covey delves into the seven habits that separate effective people from the rest. The seven habits range from proactiveness to thinking-win-win and creating synergy, flowing from one to the other. However, the overarching theme throughout the book is the 'Inside Out' approach, which explains how obvious perceived problems can usually be solved by changing our internal perceptions to the question itself. This internal approach to external factors is the most rational and controllable way to deal with any problem. There is no doubt why this book has been so impactful over the past couple of decades. A clear and well-written message at its foundation with a simple laid out gives this book the potential to improve the life of anyone open-minded enough to the habits and principles explained within. There is no doubt that this book is five stars. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/oneminutebookreview/message
How far have we come! We have reached 40 episodes on this journey at the Making Sense of Life Podcast! Its time to celebrate and give thanks. On this special episode I especially want to thank: You the listener for entrusting me with your time and attention. In a world of such overwhelming choice and distraction I trust these episodes have truly helped you to make sense of life in an increasingly challenging and complex world. My co-host Andrew Horton for his work both back stage and front stage. This has been behind the scenes with the technical aspects of the podcast and then publically in interviewing me with insightful questions as we have discussed such a wide range of topics. Jeff Brown of the Read To Lead Podcast who inspired and taught me back in 2014 how to make podcasting not just a nice idea, but an actual reality. In a world that focuses so much on the externals , the Making Sense of Life Podcast is a reminder that a meaningful life is actually an inside-out adventure. Inward change precedes outer transformation. Being bigger on the inside rather than the outside is the path to true success and impact. If we get that reversed and are actually greater on the outside than we are on the inside then disappointment, frustration and failure will not be far away. One important aspect of focussing on the inside before the outside is being real and authentic about our internal struggles and challenges. Our journey started back in 2012 with this blog, particularly around the subject of depression and negative thinking that appears to be reaching epidemic proportions around the world. For more on this see: A 15 minute video called Just As I Am that gives my personal journey through depression and negative thinking. Podcast #004 Combatting Depression where I interview the author Jo Swinney who has written about her own personal journey in her book 'Through The Dark Woods'. Podcast #003 Stress where Andrew and I discuss the challenges of stress and how to not just survive, but actually thrive. (Also see the video How To Make Stress Your Friend). Podcast #027: Beating Burnout where we look at not just the cost to ourselves of burnout, but how we can set up safeguards and protective measures in our lives. Over time we have shifted our emphasis in looking not just at the negative, but understanding how to positively flourish in the world through resilience (Podcast #013) and develop grit (passion and perseverance for long term goals at Podcast #021). How do we do that with all the other challenges in our lives so we can live in some form of balance? (Podcast #034). At the same time I have become convinced that it is not possible to authentically make sense of life without reference the Infinite Creator God of the Universe. As we have advanced in our understanding and grasp of the world what has become increasingly evident is that in spite of all our achievements and technology, the amount we know and understand is not getting any less. Indeed with an infinite reference point it is inevitable that no matter how much we know we have to come to realise the less we actually know! On Podcast #007 we discussed how religion has significant limitations when it comes to grasping the world in all its complexity. What our hearts long for is relationship. In Podcast #018 we looked at spiritual maturity as being about getting to know God through silence. solitude and the Biblical scripture. Another wonderful privilege of the podcast has been the opportunity to interview book authors and those who have lived inspiring lives. A small selection of those interviews include: A grandson of Steven R. Covey, author of the classic bestseller The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People and The 8th Habit. It was reading a quote from p.308 of that book in 1995 in Delhi, India that had a profound impact of my life. Little did I realise it would become a recurring theme of my life:
In dieser Amchor Episode habe ich das Buch „the 7 habbits of highly effective People“ von Steven R. Covey auf deutsch in 5 Minuten zusammengefasst. Ich freu mich auf euer Feedback!
Running your business like a business is crucial for getting value for your business. Today’s episode is the first of two episodes that touch on the business planning aspects of real estate. As REALTORS®, it is crucial to plan and be wise in the real estate business and think of yourself as a business person. Mark Given joins Monica today to talk about a number of things that should become part of your business plan: finding a mentor, how to foster a good broker relationship, the cost of training (or not having training) in several areas, as well as niche positions in the market and keeping up with your past clients. They also discuss aspects of building a team and being proactive in your business. When an agent is starting a real estate business, there is a lot to consider in getting started. One big aspect to consider is the cost of getting into the business; not only getting the license, but also membership fees, marketing expenses, and the out-of-pocket expenses until your business can sustain itself and support you. One of the first things a new agent has to do is find a brokerage firm. You need to find a good fit with your broker, so they can help nurture you and gain momentum. Looking for a brokerage firm that has potential mentors, a good educational program, and a culture that connects with who you are. Looking for mentors both within and outside the company is important in getting honest answers to some important questions. Learning to ask good questions is a huge part of the real estate industry. Understanding the money aspect of real estate is important in showing a profit and actually making money in your business. You likely won’t be closing on any deals right away, and you have to budget for the periods of time that you don’t have any revenue. Some expenses include gas, marketing, MLS and association fees, and other additional business fees. Taking a class that talks about the cost of running your business is a great idea for new agents — you don’t want surprises that might cause stress that would prevent you from performing at your highest level. You also don’t want to get ahead of yourself; don’t spend it before you make it! Training should be part of your business plan as well. Not only for new agents — there is always new information to be learned. It is very beneficial to do more training besides what is required for your continuing education. This can help grow your own confidence, and make your business more successful. Most agents run their real estate business as a generalist. There are plenty of agents who succeed running their business this way, but Mark has found that agents that take the time to specialize in a given niche often become the “go-to” person for that niche. If you’re going to run your business like a business, it’s in becoming really good at some part of a business that you become recognized as the best person for that part. Keeping up with your clients after a sale is a great source of ongoing business. Many of the most content REALTORS® are providing service for clients they have worked with before. When thinking about where business is going to come from in your marketing, think about clients you have worked with before and had a good experience with. Consumers should have an ideal agent, and agents should also have an ideal consumer. Making an effort to keep in touch with previous clients is not rocket science, it’s people science. Part of building your business properly is to show both competence and care. The team model has been making a rise in the real estate industry. When you have a team, you have to think about the financial side and compensation, as well as the skill side. You want to have a well-rounded group of people with different abilities and skills. It is important to communicate and hire in a way that matches up the right people together in a team. These things are important to consider before you start or join a team — make a business plan before jumping into it. Another thing to consider as you are building your team is preparing someone who is going to take over for you when you’re ready to move on. Build your business so it’s a sellable business and also one that current clients will continue to use even when you’re gone. It is crucial for people running a real estate business to have better systems. Some of these systems include contact management systems or systems that track your business’s profit. Your management systems are only as good as the information you put in them. You need to have some systems in place to make sure you’re doing things in a timely manner, and following up with your clients. There are many companies that already have these systems in place — take advantage of them! Start your day by making a plan for what you need to get done that day. One final aspect is being proactive in your business. When you’re proactive in your communication, both you and your clients will have more peace. Running a business is about having a plan for how you’re going to spend your money, how you’re going to get trained, and how you’re going to give great customer service to your clients. There was a lot of information covered in today’s episode, and Mark’s advice is to take one area and start focusing on what you can do to improve in that area. Even though they seem simple, the more focused and organized you get in these aspects, the better our businesses are going to run. Building your business like a business will give it real value. A really cool lesson I learned from my new coach and how it applies to your funnel. On today’s episode Russell talks about how his new coach has helped him figure out his someday goal and the steps he should be taking to achieve it. Here are some interesting things you’ll hear in this episode: Why Russell needed to figure out a new someday goal, and how to take steps to achieve it. Why achieving everyday goals with his someday goal in mind will help him get there. And how having an end in mind will help you reverse engineer your funnels to meet your end goal. So listen here to learn the steps to achieving your someday goals. ---Transcript--- Hey what’s up everybody, this is Russell Brunson. Welcome to Marketing Secrets. Hey everyone, hope you guys are all having an amazing day. I’m home from 2 days of inner circle mastermind meetings, which have been insanely cool. All the groups are so amazing, but this one was emotional. I think everybody in the group cried at least once or twice or something. It was crazy. So amazing. It’s an honor to be part of it and hang out with awesome entrepreneurs like that who are literally changing the world in so many different markets and industries. I wish I could just tell you guys all the stories from everyone. But it was amazing and we got the last group, group 4 coming the next two days. So it’s been fun, stressful, exciting all wrapped up into one amazing thing. Also it’s been fun, I mentioned a little while ago how I hired a new coach, and it’s been really, really good. I’m working on something so cool, I wish I could show you guys. You will see it soon. I’m probably about thirty days away from rolling it out. It’s not a big product launch or anything, it’s a subtle, but I’m calling it an ascension funnel that is almost like a video game to send people through our value ladder. And to be able to accomplish, or get people to the end in mind, get them to that spot. So I’m crafting, we’ve got the design of it done and we’ve got the pieces and I’m figuring out the path. So you will see, you’ll probably start getting emails and you’ll, you may not be aware of it, so please watch. Watch what I’m doing. If you see an email and you click on it and there’s a cartoon thing, then you know that it’s being executed. I’m going to be sharing it at Funnel Hacking Live though, probably. As long as it works good, which I’m pretty sure it will. Nobody talks about ascension funnels because no one’s really executed one that I’ve seen successfully for almost 5 1/2 , 6 years. And the one I saw was just because I had intimate behind the scenes access to the person’s business who was doing it. Anyway, I’m going to be mastering it, perfecting it and then we’ll be showing it at Funnel Hacking Live. So if you haven’t got your tickets yet, go to funnelhackinglive.com. The event sales page will be going live next week, but by the time you hear this, it’ll probably be live or close to live. We’ve already pre-sold 1200 tickets, so we don’t have a ton left, so if you want to come to the event…and I know you do. I would go to funnelhackinglive.com ASAP and get your tickets. So that’s the game plan. Appreciate you all, I’m going to go to bed and get ready for inner circle tomorrow and that’s about it. See you guys soon. Bye.

Permission to Speak Podcast. Hosted by Leadership Communications Expert Kelly Vandever. Episode #41 - June Cline. Permission to Speak is the video blog and podcast that loiters at the intersections of leaders who want their people to speak up, technology that facilitates connections, and results that serve an organization’s higher purpose. Topics covered in this episode include: - As a child, June learned humor as a way to diffuse difficult situations - Later in life, in awkward or difficult situations at work, June’s natural propensity to find a one liner or a quip of humor that broke the ice and helped people understand and communicate better - Funny will shift the energy in the room - ROI of LOL - Initiating humor - Is the humor positive or negative? Is the humor pointed in or pointed out? Those things make a difference in how the humor is received - Every organization has a corporate humor style - IMOs – Idiot Moments - June found humor helped her career and helped get her recognized and asked to be on committees; people wanted to be around her because she made them laugh - Humor alone isn’t enough. If a leader’s humor style is caustic, then they may alienate member of their team - Caustic humor, aimed at others, doesn’t work unless you have a large emotional bank account already established with those who are the butt of the humor - June discovered 4 humor styles: They are Crazy, Caring, Cerebral, and Caustic - People and cultures generally fall within one of these comedic styles - Crazies – are wild and out there, they love attention - Caring – more wholesome, perspective, real-life driving; they’ll tell on themselves or on their family - (Get permission before telling on your family!) - Cerebrals – dry humor, smart, thinking humor - Caustic – biting humor, harsh, more sarcastic - These styles are generalization, humor is as individual as each of us, we all have some of each type of humor - Tensions come when people have different humor styles and they don’t get each other - Visit JuneCline.com – take a humor quiz to find out your humor style and how you initiate humor - Missing out on connections if you don’t try to tap into the humor styles of those in your group - Humor is always determined by the ears of the listener - As a leader, if your humor isn’t landing it might be because (1) the humor is pointed toward others and you don’t have a big emotional bank account with that person/group (2) you don’t have a dog in that hunt, in other words, you’re not part of that group and don’t have the right to use that humor - (see Steven R. Covey’s writing for more info on the emotional bank account) - For every negative, it takes 20 positives to overcome the one negative - If a leader is having problems with humor, they should tell on themselves - June calls them IMOs = Idiot Moments - By sharing about an IMO, leaders are letting their guard down and being more real - Leaders don’t have to be perfect, it makes the leader more human, creates a better connection - June gives an example of one employee who didn’t quit once he understood his boss’ comedic style, their relationship improved and it saved their company $100,000 that it would have cost to replace him - Organizations have a style of humor too - Pay attention to what’s not working or what consistently always happens, use a quip or a quote to lighten the mood - Humor changes brain chemistry - Go APE with your humor where A stands for Awareness, P stands for Permission and E stands for Fun!
Overwhelmed In Episode 6 I get overwhelmed and hang up the headphones in the middle of the episode. On the one hand, it's a pretty terrible episode because of that, but on the other hand, it is good to know that I can feel bad and recover. I certainly don't feel this way anymore. It's hard to slur your words on the mic. Books / Can't do what your parents do A listener wrote in to correct me about some books that I touched on in the last episode and I took this opportunity to set the record straight. Tony Robbins wrote Awaken the Giant Within. Dale Carnegie wrote How To Win Friends and Influence People. Steven R. Covey wrote that 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Good information My Mom had these books and that's why I avoided them. I was a childish child. They probably contain a lot of good information. All right? I feel all right. I don't have to go to the doctor. Sauce I made tomato sauce with 5 tomatoes that I grew. I have a hard time explaining how I made it. It gets hard for me to talk, hard to say "5 of them". Today's Guest is Dan Keiser, architect of the Keiser Design Group located in Columbus Ohio. My desire to become an Architect began at age 10, when asked by a friend of the family, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Without hesitation, I said I want to be an Architect. After experimenting with many Lego structures, I was accepted to study Architecture at Kent State University. Another childhood dream from an early age was to start my own firm, which was realized in 1995. I love what I do and cannot imagine ever having to get a real job and going to work every day. Along with running KDG, I am a husband and father of three children. Being a Husband and Father is what brings me joy and satisfaction, but in my spare time I enjoy coaching, golfing, running, hunting and fishing." - Dan Keiser Key Takeaways Be focused on the individual. What are their ideas, dreams, perspectives, and thoughts? Surround yourself with people that will elevate you and your company. Invite interaction as you work on projects. Welcome comments and feedback. Focus. Have a clear vision and direction of where your headed. It will make all the difference. "It's critical to treat people correctly, even if they don't treat you correctly." "If the dream is big enough the details really don't matter."
