For today's episode, we're releasing a fascinating conversation that Aubrey had with Rich Hanks about the life and legacy of his father, Marion D. Hanks. For those who know his name, you'll know exactly why this conversation matters so much to us—Marion D. Hanks embodied so many of the values we hold dear. He was a leader of immense integrity, a champion for those on the margins, and a disciple of Christ in the truest sense. Even today, the ripples of his influence continue to shape the Church and the lives of so many.President David O. McKay once gave him a blessing with a simple but powerful charge: “Let your voice be heard, even if it is in opposition to the stated norms.” And he did. For forty years, he consistently pushed for change—advocating for humanitarian work long before it became a priority, fighting against the priesthood and temple ban, and insisting that sustaining leaders meant honest engagement, not silent agreement.Rich shared incredible stories about his father—the ways he stood up to cultural and institutional pressures, his deep reverence for the individual, and his unwavering belief that true discipleship is rooted in love, not conformity. He also spoke movingly about his father's final years, as dementia slowly took hold, and the lessons of grace and devotion that emerged even in that difficult season. More than anything, we were struck by how Marion D. Hanks' entire life was centered on lifting, healing, and serving—just as Christ did.We are so grateful to Rich for sharing these stories. We think this conversation will be inspiring to anyone who has ever wrestled with how to live their faith with integrity, courage, and compassion. And with that, we'll jump right into our conversation with Rich Hanks.

Shining his spotlight onto the power of quotes, today, McKay explores how seemingly simple phrases can crystallize complex lessons, offer powerful guidance, and transform our lives. The key, he argues, lies not just in the words themselves, but in how we personalize them and integrate them into our own journeys.Among the many examples McKay shares that illustrate the impact of quotes are the way in which his own father used quotes to impart wisdom, and the story of Church Leader, David O. McKay (after whom our host is named), who, as a young missionary, found purpose through an inscription he encountered. He also highlights the story of Clay Dyer, a professional bass fisherman with formidable physical limitations who overcame them through sheer determination, inspired by a powerful quote. By weaving together stories, personal anecdotes, and timeless proverbs, McKay reminds listeners that quotes aren't just motivational soundbites – they can be the starting point for taking responsibility for our lives and achieving our goals, as long as we don't let fear hold us back.Episode Highlights:• How inspiring quotes offer powerful life lessons in simple sentences• The impact of integrating quotes into your life • Finding quotes that resonate deeply and become your personal mantras• The power of proverbs• Quotes that shape purpose• Unleashing the power of quotes to inspire taking charge of your life and attitude• Overcoming obstacles• Conquering fear and pursuing goalsKey Takeaways:"The rewards are great if one succeeds, but the rewards are so great because so few succeed. McKay quote: “I think we pay too little attention to the value of meditation, a principle of devotion. In our worship there are two elements: One is spiritual communion arising from our own meditation; the other, instruction from others, particularly from those who have authority to guide and instruct us. Of the two, the more profitable introspectively is meditation. Meditation is the language of the soul.” 22:10 Example in a ward council: not praying as a to-do, but sitting with the Savior 23:30 Clarity and priority come through pausing between action 24:25 Centering the attention on the inspiration in the moment and not on the calendar: Am I interruptable? 26:20 The Savior was interruptable in his task at hand and could pivot to what was most needful in the moment 28:35 The Savior was willing to build in his time with His Father, the foundation of His work 29:35 We can meditate on the person in front of us by giving them our full attention in that moment 31:30 The order in which the Savior did what he did: communion with the Father, surrounding himself in community, then going out to minister 33:45 C.S. Lewis (in Mere Christianity): “It comes the very moment you wake up each morning. All your wishes and hopes for the day rush at you like wild animals. And the first job each morning consists simply in shoving them all back; in listening to that other voice, taking that other point of view, letting that other larger, stronger, quieter life come flowing in. And so on, all day. Standing back from all your natural fussings and frettings; coming in out of the wind.”

In 1921, President David O. McKay of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints met with Church members in an old chapel in Laie, Hawaii — where he witnessed many cultures worshipping together as one. There on the north shore of Oahu, President McKay saw how people can be united by the gospel of Jesus Christ. In a campus devotional at BYU–Hawaii almost one year ago, BYU–Hawaii President John S.K. Kauwe III spoke of President McKay's experience and of BYU–Hawaii today. The Church's university in Laie continues to resemble that diverse group President McKay encountered more than a century ago, said President Kauwe. He joins this episode of the Church News podcast — taped on the BYU–Hawaii campus — to talk about the vision and future of BYU–Hawaii and of his service as the university's president. Elder M. Russell Ballard expressed, “It is important to be still and listen and follow the Spirit. We simply have too many distractions to capture our attention, unlike any time in the history of the world.” The Restoration began with a young boy who sought stillness in a sacred grove, and President David O. McKay taught that meditation is one of the “most secret, most sacred doors” through which we come to know God. How can more stillness and mindful presence deepen our experience of intimacy with God, ourselves, and one another? In this episode, Professor Ty Mansfield discusses his book The Power of Stillness: Mindful Living for Latter-day Saints, coauthored with Jacob Z. Hess, Carrie Skarda, and Kyle Anderson, and outlines ways we might balance anxious engagement with intentional stillness. Dr. Mansfield discusses methods for implementing mindfulness into our daily lives and how such practices can deepen our conversion to the gospel and prepare us to receive more of the healing and enabling power of Jesus Christ.    Publications: ·      The Power of Stillness: Mindful Living for Latter-day Saints (Deseret Book, 2019) ·      In the Image of our Heavenly Parents: A Couple's Guide to Creating a More Divine Marriage (D Street Press, 2022) ·      Voices of Hope: Latter-day Saint Perspectives on Same-Gender Attraction—An Anthology of Gospel Teachings and Personal Essays (Deseret Book, 2011) ·      In Quiet Desperation: Understanding the Challenge of Same-Gender Attraction (Deseret Book, 2004) ·      “Homosexuality and the Gospel” (in A Reason for Faith, Religious Studies Center, 2016)   Click here to learn more about Ty Mansfield

In today's part III of Valerie's series with Greg Prince they delve into an era that Greg claims we should all better understand as we navigate our 21st century LDS faith. This episode casts a spotlight on the leadership of David O. McKay, with a special focus on his complex relationship to the eventual lifting of the temple/priesthood ban, his handling of Ezra Taft Benson's anti-communist obsession, and his questionable handling of McConkie's infamous "Mormon Doctrine" This conversation illustrate the intricate interplay between policy, revelation, and societal readiness that shaped church decisions during McKay's presidency. Valerie and Greg also navigate through challenging themes, such as the potential for power to corrupt, the church's structural comparisons to a corporation, and the high expectations placed upon church leaders. The discussion also delves into the personal impact of church policies on its members and the importance of actively owning one's faith. President David O. McKay once referred to meditation as “one of the most secret, most sacred doors through which we pass into the presence of the Lord.” On today's episode, we explore the many ways meditation and mindfulness already play an important role in the gospel of Jesus Christ. “One of the things I've wondered is if people are not walking away from the gospel as much as (having) an impoverished experience of the gospel, where the gospel has become sort of like this devices that's not working anymore. And rather than going for an upgrade and getting rid of the device, our hope is that if people could approach the gospel with fresh eyes and experience it as full of opportunities to stop, to pause, to interrupt the busyness, to interrupt the activity, that it might awaken something that has become dead, because anything...can die.” —Jacob Hess Show Notes 3:00- What is mindfulness? 6:12- Personal background with mindfulness and meditation? 12:25- Being still amidst activity in the Church 15:21- Hyper-stimulated culture 19:04- Anxiously engaged 26:59- Rushing through the gospel 34:23- Prayer as a mindfulness practice 39:27- Daily bread and suffering 50:50- What Does It Mean To Be All In The Gospel of Jesus Christ? In 1907, the First Presidency codified the Church's official policy about black African participation in both priesthood and temple declaring that, “No one known to have in his veins negro blood, (it matters not how remote a degree) can either have the Priesthood in any degree or the blessings of the Temple of God; no matter how otherwise worthy he may be.” By contrast, in 2020 Church President Russell M. Nelson reminded all church members that, “Your standing before God is not determined by the color of your skin. Favor or disfavor with God is dependent upon your devotion to God and His commandments and not the color of your skin.” The major catalyst shifting the Church away from that discriminatory 1907 policy and toward the marvelous inclusivity encapsulated in President Nelson's words, was the Lord's revelation to Church leaders in 1978. But this revelation didn't come all of the sudden nor out of the blue; in fact, it was decades in coming and grew out of the convergence of real-world circumstances in which Church leaders found themselves and the Church.  In today's episode of Church History Matters, we take a look at some of the relevant historical developments in the Church during the 70 year period from 1908-1978—from the decades-long season of racial hardening and exclusion, to a softening and relaxing of certain Church policies under President David O. McKay in the 1950s and 60s, to disharmony and divergence of views among the apostles in the 60s, and finally to the unexpected call of Spencer W. Kimball as Church president in 1973. So today we set the stage for next week's climactic episode all about the details of the 1978 revelation itself. Today's episode fell into place nicely. I've been needing some change. I am speaking for Robin too since this is something we've been talking about for a long time. Full transparency – we've let our nutritional commitments lack over the last several months. Yeah – we've done our quarterly cleanses and did well with them but as soon as they were over, and this has felt like for 18 months, we'd go back to old behaviors. We've known what to do but our will, and our desire, weren't strong enough to keep us on that track. Well, when you make a commitment to do some scary shit – that tends to change behaviors……or it better

The famous David O. McKay mural is apparently on the chopping block. But suspect reasons for its destruction are plenty. Many on and off campus believe the move is political. This is an intriguing and meaningful story. No room has been allowed for donors who want to preserve the mural which could be removed as soon as June. The mural is an iconic tie to the legacy and heritage of Polynesian members of the church. Imagine losing the "This Is The Place" monument! Website - www.cwicmedia.com

In this episode, I share one of my favorite topics - Music.Music significantly impacted my life for as long as I can remember, and it all started in my home in Poland. Growing up,  our home was filled with music; we loved to sing, dance, listen to different genres of music, and play music together. Plato said:"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything." Another quote that means so much to me is by  David O. McKay."Music is truly the universal language, and when it is excellently expressed, how deeply it moves our souls."Russell M. Nelson, "It matters what you listen to. . . . Select music that will strengthen your spirit." Throughout the years, I found this to be accurate, music is diverse, but to me, a certain kind of music "strengthens my Spirit."What kind of music influences your Soul? Or strengthens your Spirit? In the Psalms, we read."Make a joyful noise unto God:… sing forth the honor of his name: make his praise glorious." —Psalm 66:1–2  Music surrounds us, whether birds singing, the rhythm of rain, or musicians playing. In closing, I share a piece of music I composed while still in school, titled "Music."www.kasiasmusic.comwww.kasiasfaithjourney.comhttps://www.facebook.com/kasiasfaithjourney/

If you have been listening to these podcasts for long you would catch that I am a big advocate of pondering your prayers before you even begin to say them. In past episodes, I have talked a lot about the benefits of pondering your prayers but today I want to focus on how that can also achieve your goal of learning how to meditate. President David O. McKay was a big proponent of meditation and he said “Meditation is the language of the soul. It is defined as ‘a form of private devotion, or spiritual exercise, consisting in deep, continued reflection on some religious theme.' Meditation is a form of prayer.”In this episode I dive into how you can make meditation a part of your prayer to help you receive more in those moments, gain strength beyond your own, accomplish more, and find clarity in the chaos of life.Join the waitlist Clarity in the Chaos Course: Revelation Meditations https://www.nikiolsencoaching.com/meditationYou might also enjoy these episodes from the Meaningful Minutes PodcastEpisode 74: The Art of Meaningful Prayerhttps://www.nikiolsencoaching.com/blog/74 Episode 88: Meditation, The Sacred Door to Daily Repentancehttps://www.nikiolsencoaching.com/blog/88 Check out what other resources are available from Nikihttps://www.nikiolsencoaching.comFollow Niki on social media for more free contenthttps://www.instagram.com/nikiolsencoaching/

How would you define prayer? I personally like to think of prayer as connecting with God. There have been so many instances in my life where I have prayed and prayed and prayed for something that I thought I needed, and that were certainly what we would call "righteous desires." But when I didn't feel like I was getting the answers I wanted, my own plans started to consume my thoughts and I became frustrated. I felt "disconnected from God." In today's episode I want to tell you a few stories of times when Heavenly Father has taught me a few things about prayers, and I want to share the secret on how we can feel connected to God whenever we want! Here's the link for David O. McKay's take on meditation. Have a fantastic week!

She also has a BA in Communications and an MA in Adult Education along with 15 years of experience as a corporate trainer and leadership coach. Jody and her husband live in Spokane, Washington, and are the parents of four children. Highlights 9:00 We hear counsel or advice and immediately see where others could use it. 11:10 We have an idea of what the "right way to be" looks like for certain roles that people fill in our lives. 12:00 Expectations are premeditated disappointment. We create manuals for others and are disappointed when they don't follow those rules. 14:00 We lose our own authority for ourselves when we blame others for our thoughts and emotions; instead we can get to compassion by recognizing they are imperfect people doing their best. 15:30 The Atonement has two parts: the saving part, and the strengthening and enabling part; we can access that strengthening and enabling power. 17:00 We are punishing ourselves and it doesn't change the other person; we also then unconsciously mirror them and we end up "doing it wrong", and that's what feels terrible. 19:30 How to recognize when you default to these negative thoughts: Examine yourself instead of others. What am I doing that might be similar to what they're doing? In what way am I doing the very thing that I'm judging this person for? 21:45 Next we start to judge ourselves. Recognize that sometimes we are also imperfect. When we can do that for ourselves, we get better at doing it for other people. 23:20 The adversary helps us take the gospel and turn it into part of our manual, and then we judge others by it, driving a wedge between us. We should look at the gospel and counsel for ourselves, not others. 27:00 David O. McKay quote: "The purpose of the gospel is to make bad men good and good men better." Susan Easton Black quote: When I go to church, I go to take the sacrament. That part's for me. But everything else, I go there thinking, What am I bringing? What can I give to other people? 29:15 Sometimes we take the principle of obedience too far; obedience should not come at the expense of our own integrity and relationship with Jesus Christ. 30:10 Be clear about the difference between the gospel and the people. If you want to believe and sustain your leaders, that is enough. The Lord will work with you where you are. 31:40 Giving people permission to be themselves. Sometimes we can manipulate people to be what we want, but then they aren't really who they are. 33:10 What if our only expectation is that they be themselves? 34:25 We can make requests of people, but it becomes a problem when we hang our emotions on whether or not they do it. 36:40 We don't need more people who are like us. We need people who think differently than we do. 38:00 We can define our own success, keeping our expectations to ourselves and holding ourselves to them because others are outside our control. 40:40 When you are the leader, you can start to wonder what others expect of you and become a people pleaser. 42:10 We step into our best version of ourselves as leaders when we try to be ourselves instead of trying to live up to the expectations of others. 44:00 Managing up: you can make a request of the person above you to try or change things. 45:00 Have boundaries and don't allow mistreatment, but don't take it too far and have expectations that diminish the quality of your life and relationships. 48:00 If you want to do something differently, do it now, wherever you are. In those moments, it is helpful to get down to what is most important. We can ask ourselves, "What matters to me at this time?" As we are shifting into summer, I asked myself this question and came up with four items that matter: work, play, teach, and connect. Follow our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/groups/goyeforthpodcast/ Hello everyone! On today's show, I speak with Dave Johnson who served in the North British Mission in England from 1969 to 1971 And in my missionary minute, I talk about being a lifelong missionary. So let's get to it! --- Listen to episode --- A big thanks to my new friend Dave Johnson In today's missionary minute I was thinking about some of the conversations I had with Dave leading up to recording the episode. His son Nate listens to the show and connected us. One of the things that impressed me was that Dave was just as excited to talk about the friend he baptized before his mission, about being a stake missionary and the friends he baptized after his mission. For him, he really took to heart what President David O. McKay used to say, that every member is a missionary. I remember that I was so fired up about missionary work on my mission and realized that I had not been a great missionary before my mission. I had one friend who was not a member of the church who I had some discussions with and I gave him a Book of Mormon before leaving on my mission. I don't know if I did much more than that. After my mission, I think that I've been better, but I know that I could have done better and still can do better. I think that there have been too many times where I was “work Jason,” and then I was “member of the Church Jason” on the weekend. Not that I was breaking the commandments or anything, but I have sometimes avoided telling someone what I was doing that weekend when they've asked me. I may have had plans to go to the temple, and someone who was not a member of our faith asked me what my plans were for the weekend, and I would skirt that and say, yard work or something. Instead of taking the opportunity to tell them about things that are really important to me. I think that I was overly cautious with some of my employees, worrying that they might perceive me as being biased toward employees or seeming like I'm discriminating based on their church affiliation or activity. And frankly just not knowing the boundaries of what I could say as their employer without getting into some hot water by sharing my religion. Through the years my wife probably has been a better missionary. She never got the chance to serve a full-time mission, though she would have loved to. Also, I think a lot of times I've thought, well, they wouldn't understand. And that might be true. But it's no reason to not tell someone about what things I am doing with the church or even the fact that I'm going to church on Sunday. Through the years I've gotten better at telling people about my faith. In fact, I just invited a neighbor to come to church this past week. He didn't come. And that's OK. We are still friends. We've given a Book of Mormon to another neighbor. And they still practice another religion. And that's OK. We've invited neighbors to a child's baptism. And they didn't come. And that's OK. I think the important thing is to not hide anything under a bushel so to speak. My neighbors today know where we go to church and at least know a little about what we believe. I love the direction Elder Uchtdorf has given, telling us to share what the Church and gospel mean to us in natural and normal ways. If someone asks a question, then the opportunity is wide open to let those conversations happen. Well, that's about it for today's show. If you liked the show, please subscribe so that you are notified when new episodes come out. We would also appreciate it if you could rate and review the podcast in Apple podcasts, or share it with a friend. Thank you for joining me today. I have a great guest today by the name of Corbin Church who is a husband of 31 years and father of two daughters. He has always seen family as the number one priority in his life with the quote by David O. On the latest Mormon Book Reviews, a recently rediscovered 22-foot painted panorama by C. C. A. Christensen is discussed with Devan Jensen, the executive editor at the BYU Religious Studies Center. Devan told me how Steven Olsen at the Church History Department rediscovered and acquired a rare, early panorama painted by C. C. A. Christensen that was used to proselytize Native Americans in Utah. Devan then told me how he got involved with the project and that the Church History Museum team identified the date of 1871 on the back of canvas. I mentioned to him that the earliest extant artwork of a Book of Mormon scene was identified by my friend Dr. Chris Thomas in his book "A Pentecostal Reads the Book of Mormon." In his book he described a painting of David Hyrum Smith that was dated to around 1874 according to Lachlan MacKay, Community of Christ historian and apostle. It was very exciting that I was able to identify an existing piece that is even older! In this episode we discuss the fascinating story of Christensen and his art. We then discuss each image of the panorama. The imagery is very striking for LDS art because it contains partial nudity and an early crucifixion scene. I then discuss the importance of the image of the cross in the Christian world, as well as the history of the use of the cross in the 19th and 20th Century Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The role of David O. McKay and his actions to modernize the Church, emulate 1950s Protestantism, and moving the Church away from Roman Catholic imagery like the cross is also discussed. The work "Banishing the Cross: The Emergence of a Mormon Taboo" by Michael Reed is referenced as well. This panorama was used as a proselytizing tool to convert the local Native American peoples. We briefly talk about the Bear River Massacre and the work of Darren Parry and Thomas Murphy. We also preview the upcoming Brigham Young Journals project and the Church History Symposium to be held next month (March 2022). This was an important and very exciting interview to conduct, and I want to thank Devan for coming on. The 2022 Church History Symposium will be held on March 10–11, 2022. The symposium will convene at the Brigham Young University Conference Center on March 10 at 9:00 a.m. and at the Church Office Building auditorium and Church History Library at Salt Lake City on March 11 at 8:45 a.m. Keynote speakers include Elder Gerrit W. Carrie Skarda is back on our podcast today! This week, she is here to talk more about how mindfulness and meditation can move us into a place of creativity, be a source that can help us to have better prayers and relationship with Jesus Christ, and experiencing forgiveness. We first dive into the account of when God created the Earth, and that the process was good even when there was much chaos. Carrie points out that no matter our circumstances that surround us, we can be anchored in stillness to act in a way that align with our value systems. If we find ourselves being mindful, we can go from a place of reactivity to creativity. Carrie quotes President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, David O. McKay, saying, "I think we pay too little attention to the value of meditation. A principle of devotion in our worship. There are two elements. One is spiritual communion arising from our own meditation. The other instruction from others, particularly those who have authority to guide and instruct us of the two, the more profitable introspection is the meditation. Meditation is a form of prayer." She informs us that we don't always have to be talking with Jesus Christ, but that sometimes prayer is just listening and letting Him warm you. The last point that Carrie discusses is forgiveness. Whatever state you are in, there can be forgiveness. This does not always mean reconciliation with a spouse or even connection to our best self. It is trusting God and that He will walk this journey with us. Listen in for a personal story that Carrie shares of her own experience with this! Sometimes the storms and battles of life don't leave us standing, but leave us broken and immovable, not in the good way, but no one knows about those storms because they are not physical fights. President David O. McKay has learned that, ‘The greatest battle of life is fought within the silent chambers of your own soul.' President Spencer W Kimball assures us that, “The Lord does notice us, and he watches over us. But it is usually through another person that he meets our needs.” God didn't put us on earth by ourselves, that's why there are so many of us! And truly changing the world is a long-term multigenerational process. How then can we remain committed to changing to the world without succumbing to hopelessness or resentment? Example story of people asking a farmer about the people in the town. You will find whatever you are looking for. Did Pres. McKay Support Evolution?

President McKay was an educator before he was called to be an apostle and future church president.  Was he more open to evolution than other LDS leaders?  Ben Spackman will answer that question. https://youtu.be/i1DkqKm5pZE Ben:  When people bring up Mormon Doctrine, or Man, His Origin and Destiny, I tend to point to President McKay because President McKay on several occasions was very friendly to evolution....Then in 1965, in general conference, David O. McKay quotes him on that point. Now he doesn't read him at all, but he says, "Here's a scientist I've been reading who talks about a man's conscience." So, if you follow that thread, if you get below the tip of that iceberg, that's a very pro-evolution interpretation of Genesis. David O. McKay clearly doesn't think that Genesis in any way prohibits evolution. ... There was an article that was published in the official Church magazine by a BYU (I think) botany professor, someone who dealt with DNA and other things....This article as it was printed in the Church magazine, has a little black box at the front that says, "This article was read and approved by the editor of the magazine." If you flip back to the front, the editor is President David O. McKay. Now we have data from his son who was on one of the church committees or something. This article got taken to President McKay by his son to say, "We're going to run this. Do you want to read it first?" He read the whole thing word for word and said, "This is fantastic work. Run it. I want this box in front." The box also said, "It is not presented as a position of church doctrine." So, David O. McKay was very comfortable saying, "Here's evolution. We're going to put this in the Church magazine. We're going to respond to these questions. We're going to address Genesis. I don't want to impose it on people as some kind of official doctrine, because it's not." But, he was certainly enthusiastic about it. Check out our conversation….   Pres. McKay may have been the prophet most supportive of evolution. The United States were grappling with the Civil Rights Movement during the tumultuous 1960s.  In our next conversation with Matt Harris, we will talk about key events in the 1960s that affect the LDS Church's teaching about race and how the Civil Rights Movement impacted the Mormon Church.  We will even learn that Elder Brown predicted to end ban in 1962 General Conference! https://youtu.be/023tWoriAqA Matt: Hugh B. Brown was front and center in church leadership trying to get the brethren to overturn the ban.  He is working behind the scenes.  He is doing the best that he can, but it is very, very challenging for him.  In 1962 he will have a private meeting with Lowell Bennion, whom we have already talked about who didn't support the ban and told President McKay in private. So, it was no secret that President McKay knew where Brother Bennion stood.  Anyway, in March of 1962, Hugh B. Brown tells Lowell Bennion, “We're going to lift the ban here next month.  Make sure you come to [General] Conference.”[1] GT:  '62?! Matt:  This is March of '62. GT:  Wow. Matt: “Come to Conference next month.  We're going to lift the ban.” The prediction of course is in April of '62, we're going to have this big announcement at General Conference.  “We have been studying this issue, and there is nothing more difficult for the church,” Brown tells Bennion, “than this issue, and we're going to fix it.” So, I can only imagine Bennion showing up and nothing happens! We will also talk about the motivation behind the 1949 First Presidency statement, and apostle Hugh B. Brown's attempts to rescind the ban. Matt:  Recognizing that Lowry Nelson had spent time in Cuba as part of his profession, his field research, he decided to reach out to Nelson and ask him about Cuba and the racial population there because Nelson had lived there for a while.  Lowry Nelson wrote back and just said, “I don't think you can determine who has got negroid blood, and you shouldn't even try!  That's just immoral!” Nelson said something that is probably less than candid.  He said, “That was the first time I knew that the church felt this way about this.” Come on Lowry.  You grew up in the church.  So, Lowry Nelson writes the First Presidency after he exchanged correspondence with his good friend Heber Meeks.  He said, “Is it true that you are trying to establish a mission in Cuba, and just focus on the white population there and not the colored, the brown population?  Is that true?” The First Presidency wrote him back a series of letters.  They said, “Yes that is true, and we don't understand why God wants this ban, but this is the way it is.  Who are you to determine what God should do?” Nelson was really upset with the response, thinking that it was just a policy that could be changed.  But the brethren dug their heels in and sort of exacerbated the problem.  When they wrote back to Lowry Nelson, it was the first time where the First Presidency goes on record, and they sign the letter.  It is interesting.  They all sign these letters back and forth, all three of them:  George Albert Smith, J. Reuben Clark, and David O. McKay.  Clearly, they are trying to make a statement about the church's racial teachings, at least by the mid-20th century. What is interesting is he shares these letters on the underground with people.  He sends them to Juanita Brooks.[2]  He sends them to George Boyd who is the Institute person.  He sends them to all of these Institute people that he felt like he had a liberal kinship with, and they write him back.  ”Oh my goodness.  I didn't know the brethren felt this way, that they felt this strongly about it.” We'll also talk about Michigan and Mormon Governor George Romney's run for the U.S. presidency. You might recognize his famous son Mitt Romney did the same just a few years ago.  George Romney's cousin was also an LDS Apostle, and the 1960s had a lot of factions for and against the ban on blacks from temple...

It's Black History Month at Gospel Tangents.  This is our final conversation with Russell Stevenson and we'll talk the LDS Church in Africa.  Did you know that Nigerians in the 1960s and even in the 1950s I learned have asked for LDS missionaries to come teach the gospel to them.  It's pretty surprising that they did this without any LDS presence in Nigeria.  Russell Stevenson will talk more about this in our next conversation. https://youtu.be/QG4Oab2VMDI Russell:  Throughout the 1950s, a number of church leaders are getting letters from various Nigerians across the river in Igboland, elsewhere begging for missionaries, asking for some kind of missionary presence.  The initial response by David O. McKay and others was some level of skepticism.  Maybe they are just looking for an opportunity to make money.  They are just looking for white people to give them business, maybe looking for a new source of patronage now that the British influence was beginning to recede.  By 1960 it was officially turned over to Nigerians. In 1960 David O. McKay and the First Presidency, they send Glen Fisher, who has once been a mission president in South Africa to see what's happening on the ground.  Are these potential converts legitimate?  Do they in fact want to join the LDS Church, or are they just looking for some kind of business opportunity?  Glen Fisher returned with a report that was gushing by saying these people are the real deal.  They crave Mormonism.  They crave the LDS Church. ... So they go there and they come away with the same conclusion that Glen Fisher had come away with, that these people are the real deal.  They are legitimate.  They in fact crave Mormonism.  In fact Lamar Williams went further.  He said, “Ultimately we cannot keep the priesthood from these people.”  Essentially it's only a matter of time. GT:  What year is this? Russell:  This is in 1961. GT chuckles:  '61.  That's pretty prophetic! Russell:  Yes.  I should note too, this isn't the very first time you have Nigerians communicating this kind of thing to missionaries.  We have evidence all the way back to 1950 of a Nigerian reverend approaching missionaries in New York City asking for a missionary presence.  This is all throughout the post-war period.  I'm only talking about the period in which the activity is most sustained. Find out more about what happened with the LDS Church in Africa!  I hope enjoyed our previous conversations with Russell on Elijah Ables, his mission, the temple/priesthood ban, and his attempts to get his endowment.  Check out all of these episodes for #BlackHistoryMonth!…..

Rival Mission Presidents in Germany

The Mormon Church is very well known for having a very well-organized institution. It wasn't always the case though. It turns out that J. Reuben Clark and David O. McKay called a mission president to Berlin, while President Grant who was in Europe at the time called a different man to be mission president. Both mission presidents arrived in Berlin. What happens next? Dr. David Nelson tells a very interesting story about rival mission presidents in the Berlin, Germany mission. David:  Heber J. Grant was in Germany.  What he was doing is he was celebrating 100 years of Mormonism in Europe, so he is on a 3 month tour of Germany, the prophet, seer, and revelator, Heber J. Grant.  He comes to Bern, Switzerland where the mission home is for what was known as then, the Swiss-German mission, later on became the West German mission.  He stays with Swiss-German mission, Philemon Kelly, who was a kindly man, a doctor from Idaho, a physician, medical doctor.  Sometime during stay, Pres Grant goes to Pres. Kelly and says, “How you like to be the mission president in Berlin?” That's a plum assignment.  Philemon Kelly [said], “I'll take it.”  He packed up and he's gone. At same time while President Grant is gone from Salt Lake City, David O. McKay and J. Reuben Clark are calling Albert C. Rees to be the mission president in Berlin, the same city.  The newspapers in Salt Lake City give goodbye editorials to Alfred C. Rees because he's one of them.  He's part of the newspaper industry there.  There's no doubt he is going to Berlin, but when he gets to Berlin he finds Philemon Kelly and his wife already installed in the mission home in the Tiergarten and Kelly won't give it up. In my book I write for a month or a month and a half, these two guys are competing.  No way Rees could turn around and take the consolation prize in Frankfurt, so he goes and rents a home, which the mission has to pay for, down the street and we have rival mission presidents in Berlin for this period of time. Who won?  You'll have to listen to find out!  Dr. Nelson also discusses some LDS interactions with Adolph Hitler. David:  You had a situation that happened there where some 900 German adolescent girls, not Mormons, but 900 adolescent girls came home from rally pregnant, unmarried girls ages 14-17.  There was an investigation.  In 400 cases they could not determine who father was because girl had multiple sexual partners.  This caused a stir and quite a bit of controversy in a police state.  You don't raise a lot of heck in Nazi Germany.  You don't go around screaming to people to supervise these kids better because you don't scream at anybody in that type of a situation. ... Elizabeth Welker writes letter to Gertrud Schultz-Klink and expresses some worries about that.  A couple of Klink's assistants get in touch with her and agree to let her tour some youth camps, so she can see for herself the level of discipline enforced, and level of supervision at youth camps.  One of these trips, Shultz-Klink is in the limousine with Adolph Hitler because Adolph Hitler is going out to see the camps himself.  Shultz-Klink gets picked up, and she is in the same car with Hitler.  They go out there and they inspect this camp.  There were a couple of other times under Schultz-Klink's underlings came out at took her to other took to other youth meetings.  In the end Elizabeth Welker is just absolutely bamboozled, and believes German adolescent girls are the best teenage girls in world, and they are being led better than anybody else, certainly a lot better than our permissive situation in the United States. Welker writes an article on the moral status of German girls in the Improvement Era!  Check out our conversation….. https://youtu.be/i_YYBZQ0FM0 [paypal-donation]

Trivia question for you:  what was the first LDS temple outside the United States?  The answer is below but see if you can guess before you read the answer.  In our final conversation with BYU Church History professor Dr. Richard Bennett, we learned that this temple marked the end of gathering the church to Utah, and the beginning of creating temples away from the center of Mormonism. https://youtu.be/qrVppt6ruKQ Temples were magnets and were a powerful factor in people gathering from Europe and inland to the Rocky Mountains.  Originally they went to Nauvoo.  The saints wanted to be where the temple is. After 1900 and the beginning of an understanding that we should stay where we are and gather to the local units and gather in their own nations, you begin to see temples now moving out from Utah.  I think the first major expression of that would be the Cardston Temple. We also discussed the Temple Ship, an idea mentioned in Greg Prince's biography of President David O. McKay! Yes I know that story, like a Hope Ship.  It had a lot of traction at one time.  It's pretty hard to keep sacred a ship though, {chuckles} and I think that was the thing that sunk it, the idea that, oh we can have this boat that would be a dedicated temple.  The reason it had traction was you could go to places where the saints were. You could go to the islands and different countries all over the world.  But I think, I don't know.  I remember studying that when I was studying the life of David O. McKay years ago, and I wrote the history of Brigham Young University, shadow boat history.  This was going to be difficult to keep a ship afloat that's a temple and keep it sacred, going all over the place, and having it serviced and everything else, plus the cost. McKay to service international Church members! https://gospeltangents.com/shop/transcripts/1st-international-temple-was-almost-a-temple-ship/
