When Freedom is the Question… was published on September 10, and we had a book launch that night at our home-away-from-home, Pilsen Community Books, in conversation with Eve Ewing. We traveled to Women and Children First, Seminary Coop, The Wooden Shoe in Philadelphia, Book and Puppet in Easton, PA, Riff Raff in Providence, Firestorm in Asheville, NC, Red Emma's in Baltimore, Busboys and Poets in DC, the PIT (Property is Theft!!) in Brooklyn, and more. I read at public libraries, coffee shops, and Movement venues like Haymarket House, Hasta Muerte, and The James Connelly Social Club. A couple of the events were taped, one at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy, NY where I was in conversation with the legendary thinker and activist Barbara Smith, co-author of the Combahee River Collective statement, and one at La Pena in Oakland where I was in conversation with Cat Brooks, organizer, activist, and KPFA radio host---Under the Tree will drop those spicy conversations in the future. I was honored and often awed to be in conversation with several other powerful comrades and dazzling friends: Lisa Lee, Danaka Katovich, Alice Kim, Damon Williams, Jacqui Lyden, Daniel Kisslinger, Martha Biondi, Adam Bush, James Michael MacDonald, Jeff Jones, Martha Swan, and more.
Let's talk about teaching, which means let's also talk about racism—attitudes, stereotypes, prejudices, for sure, and much, much more. Let's talk about structures and institutions, as well, about laws and legacies, cultures and the dogma of common sense. Co-host Adam Bush and I are joined in conversation with Christopher Emdin and Sam Seidel. After Chris published the wildly successful and useful book, For White Folks Who Teach in the Hood . . . and the Rest of Y'all Too, he and Sam, long-time friends and comrades, decided to reach out to over twenty white anti-racist teachers—including my brother Rick—to tell their own stories, creating From White Folks Who Teach in the Hood: Reflections on Race, Culture, and Identity, a dazzling companion text and a powerful guide to teaching toward enlightenment and liberation.

Adam Bush is hanging out this week! Adam's new stand-up special, “My Mom is Funnier than Your Mom,” is out on Drybar now! We check out trailers for “Agent Recon” with a possible AI Chuck Norris, and “Twisters” which just looks bad. Then, it's the new Switch speed-run game “Nintendo World Championships,” and a quick education on Kaizo speed-running. Plus, the amazing nuance of Bluey, and utter absurdity of the Star Wars Holiday Special.
Ever wonder what it's like to juggle punchlines and parenthood? Tune in as my hilarious friend, Adam Bush, unpacks the path from TV writer to stand-up comedy stardom. Our chat takes a twist through the corridors of Adam's forthcoming Dry Bar special, and his new special "Who Brought The Kid", sprinkled with tales of touring with the electrifying Preacher Lawson and mentoring fledgling comics at Tulsa's Looney Bin. Adam's mantra of timing and tenacity gives us a peek behind the curtain of comedy's rigorous demands and riotous rewards. As Adam and I swap stories, we unravel the artistry of crowd work — that unpredictable dance between comic and spectator that can spiral into an evening's showstopper. We muse over familial foundations that bolster a comic's leap of faith into full-time folly and the delicate balance of nurturing personal relationships amidst the call of the spotlight. Our conversation meanders from Adam's early days crafting kids' TV to current escapades, revealing the tightrope walk of creative ambition and domestic dedication.Capping off our session, Adam shines a light on the poignant threads woven into his narrative comedy special, a mosaic of humor and heartache forged from personal tribulations and triumphs, all slated to hit YouTube. Dive into the power of autobiographical hilarity and catch a glimpse of Adam's special soon to grace the Dry Bar app and the special, Who Brought The Kid, on YouTube, May 17th. Everyone has had fleeting thoughts and questions about their faith, so what do you do with them? Maybe doubt wasn't welcomed in your church or family growing up. Often, that's because a lot of followers of Jesus only have one category for doubt... doubt = bad. When you lump all doubt together, you end up thinking that Jesus doesn't want your questions but that couldn't be further from the truth. In this episode, Whit George and Adam Bush discuss three categories of people and use them as a roadmap for what to do with our doubts.

Adam Bush, co-founder and Provost of the newly accredited College Unbound, shares his story of stepping out of the box to create an accessible, affordable and equitable college education. Adam shares how College Unbound provides adult learners with a college education integrated into their daily lives with courses focused on Organizational Leadership at community centers, libraries, or public housing. Adam says that he “wants the student experience of navigating our college to be as funky and natural as one that really reflects the learning that they're a part of regularly in their daily practice. And the school is an advocate for that learning. There's an institutional way to look at what we did that's really not so funky for the student." Adam speaks about the importance of students bringing their full selves to their education experiences, and how College Unbound nurtures those students to do so. Hear how Adam and College Unbound are advocating for change in learning.
College Unbound, a small, newly accredited college in Providence, Rhode Island, has been garnering a lot of positive attention lately—with good reason. It serves adult, working, parenting students, just the kind who are generally been ignored or underestimated by American higher education. In contrast to the short-term job training that many leaders believe nontraditional students want and need, CU offers an undergraduate degree grounded in project-based learning, peer cohorts, and a culture of full-throated support. Its graduation rate is around 80%. Its cost is around $5000 a term. Its students passionately love the program. In this episode, I speak with Provost Adam Bush about CU's program and values, the college's response to the pandemic, and the implications of its model of transformative education not only for adult learners, but for higher ed as a whole. Along with visiting the College Unbound website, you can learn more by reading: “Colleges Struggle to Serve Millions of Dropouts. Today, we're looking at the idea that, “Christians should be ready to defend their beliefs.” We like to call a statement like that a true lie. There's a hint of truth to it, but ultimately the idea has resulted in a misunderstood, broken concept … a true lie. It's unfortunate, but it's tough to have honest and open conversations with people these days. In this episode, Whit George and Adam Bush explore how to have conversations with people… even the people you may disagree with. Learn more about In Motion on churchonthemove.com/inmotion.
In this week's episode, Whit George and Adam Bush discuss the questions, “What's the point of pain?” “Why do bad things happen to good people?” We're looking at the idea that “if you follow Jesus, everything will be easy.” We like to call a statement like that a true lie. Because there's a hint of truth to it, but ultimately the idea has resulted in a misunderstood, broken concept … a true lie. In this episode, Whit and Adam talk about what to do when you don't know that everything will be alright. When you doubt that God is really good because what's happening to you is really bad. Adam Bush is one of the owners of Archive here in Portland, OR. Archive is a top-tier cannabis brand and their breeding program has been responsible for strains such as DoSiDo, Duct Tape, and a current favorite, Moonbow, among others.-----Intro - 00:15Ads - 04:35 - Please visit our sponsors Awakened Vapes, Genesis Pharms, and the Caramel Corn Company and help support this podcast!Interview - 7:55-----Welcome back to Awakened Exchanges! I'm thankful to see that Covid seems to be trending in the right direction this time, and I'm going to keep my fingers crossed that we can get businesses opened up again before it's too late. If you have any suggestions for topics or guests though, I do listen to the listeners, so please email me from our website or contact me on twitter @AwakenExchanges. I'm not going to get much into politics this week. Personally I'm just happy that things seem to be getting quieter on that front again. Maybe the Capitol Riot was actually a wake-up call that made people realize what we don't want in this country. Here's to finding a way that we can come together, hopefully behind a unified Unity 2024, now that we have time to do the concept justice. As for other things this week, I have to at least mention my fascination with Redditors breaking the financial markets. They've taken Gamestop, and Dogecoin skyrocketing, and it's looking like they're trying to do the same with AMC and a handful of others as well. I would love to see the internet save Gamestop and AMC, all while making some money for themselves and forcing Wall Street shorters to lose. Seems a little poetic that the little guys are starting to learn that we can make some noise and remind the 1% that we all deserve a little consideration as well. Personally, I totally miss going to theaters, but I don't know if they're going to come back in full force. Ready Player One level virtual reality could theoretically be coming for real this decade, and that would bring a personal theater to everyone's headset. It seems inevitable that streaming is the future, but maybe AMC can have a big bang of a decade until we get there. Maybe with all this backing they can actually find a way to pivot into the new virtual market during that decade too, who knows. As for Dogecoin, I would love to see it hit a dollar this year, but I don't know how likely that is. Doge has a ton of internet support, and the blockchain is based on the same foundation that underlies Litecoin. I'll be holding mine and seeing what the future brings. And with regulation changes coming this year, I'm definitely starting to sniff around cannabis stocks again to find which companies might actually gain traction through quality and not quantity. That actually segues nicely into this week's interview, Adam Bush, one of the owners of Archive here in Portland. Archive is one of the brands that has made quality over quantity a priority. While their quantity is not lacking either, their focus on good genetics and breeding quality has made them a sought after brand all over the state of Oregon. Archive's flagship shop here in Portland is now a destination for cannabis enthusiasts from all over. Adam's enthusiasm is contagious, even when talking about some of the other amazing hash rosin makers in the state. He has a passion for cannabis and a humble attitude that has brought him a long way thus far. I want to thank him for coming onto the exchange and sharing a great conversation with me.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/AwakenedExchanges) --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/awakened-exchanges/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/awakened-exchanges/support
