Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” Mark 8:27In answer to this question, the disciples informed Jesus that some thought He was “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” But then Jesus asked the disciples who they thought He was. It was Peter who responded by saying, “You are the Christ.”As we ponder this exchange between Jesus and the disciples, try to hear our Lord ask you the same question. “But who do you say that I am?” Though you most likely will find this easy to answer on an intellectual level, don't answer it too quickly. Think about it. Deep within your soul, what do you believe about Jesus?Though Peter's answer is the correct answer, it's important to ponder what that actually means. This is especially evident by the fact that as soon as Jesus began to explain His mission as the Christ, Peter could not accept it. Jesus explained to Peter and the other disciples that, as the Christ, he would “suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days.” In other words, Jesus wanted the disciples to understand the essence of His mission. His mission was one in which He would become the sacrificial Lamb of God and die for our sins. But this was too much for the disciples to immediately understand, accept and embrace with gratitude.Do you understand, accept and embrace this primary mission of Jesus? Do you understand that because of the sins you have personally committed, you need a Savior? Do you understand that the consequences of your sins are death? Eternal death? And do you further understand that it is only by Jesus' death that all sin and death are destroyed?Sometimes we can fall into the fallacy of thinking that Jesus is only an inspirational figure Who teaches us how we should live. And though that is true, Jesus is so much more. He is the one and only way to Heaven. Without His death and resurrection we cannot attain Heaven. He is the one and only Savior. The Lamb Who was slain for our sins. The one and only source of eternal redemption. The exclusive bridge between Heaven and humanity. And though you might understand this intellectually to a certain extent, your faith in this fact must enter deeply into your soul so that you can believe it and embrace His gift of eternal salvation within the deepest core of your being. This takes a radical understanding, acceptance and embrace if we are to truly receive the gift of Jesus' life. Reflect, today, upon how you would answer this question from our Lord. “Who do YOU say that I am?” If you are to answer this correctly, then it requires that you continually deepen your understanding, acceptance and full embrace of the saving mission of our Lord. Though this is a lifelong process, we must never stop entering more deeply into this divine mystery and gift so that we will become completely transformed by the life, death and resurrection of He Who is the Christ of God. Saving Lord, please open my mind and heart to You more deeply this day and every day of my life. May I continually go deeper in my faith and understanding of You and Your divine mission of salvation. As I do, please transform me more and more so that I will be more fully disposed to receive all that You came to bestow upon me. Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.” Matthew 18:21–22Forgiveness of another is difficult. It's much easier to remain angry. This line quoted above is the introduction to the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant. In that parable, Jesus makes it clear that if we want to receive forgiveness from God, then we must forgive others. If we withhold forgiveness, we can be certain that God will withhold it from us.Peter may have thought that he was being quite generous in his question to Jesus. Clearly Peter had been considering Jesus' teachings about forgiveness and was ready to take the next step of offering that forgiveness freely. But Jesus' answer to Peter makes it clear that Peter's concept of forgiveness greatly paled in comparison to the forgiveness demanded by our Lord.The parable that Jesus then tells presents us with a man who was forgiven a huge debt. Subsequently, when that man encountered a person who owed him a small debt, he failed to offer the same forgiveness that was given to him. As a result, the master of that man who was forgiven the huge debt becomes outraged and requires once again a full payment of the debt. And then Jesus ends the parable with a shocking statement. He says, “Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”Note that the forgiveness God expects us to offer others is one that comes from the heart. And note that a lack of forgiveness on our part will result in us being handed “over to the torturers.” These are serious words. By “torturers,'' we should understand that the sin of not forgiving another brings with it much interior pain. When we hold on to anger, this act “tortures” us in a certain way. Sin always has this effect upon us, and it is for our good. It's a way in which God constantly challenges us to change. Thus, the only way to freedom from this interior form of torture by our sin is to overcome that sin, and in this case, to overcome the sin of withholding forgiveness.Reflect, today, upon the calling God has given to you to forgive to the fullest extent. If you still sense anger in your heart toward another, keep working at it. Forgive over and over. Pray for that person. Refrain from judging them or condemning them. Forgive, forgive, forgive, and God's abundant mercy will also be given to you.My forgiving Lord, I thank You for the unfathomable depths of Your mercy. I thank You for Your willingness to forgive me over and over again. Please give me a heart worthy of that forgiveness by helping me to forgive all people to the same extent that You have forgiven me. I forgive all who have sinned against me, dear Lord. Help me to continue to do so from the depths of my heart. Jesus, I trust in You. Deze aflevering van de Gave Wijven Podcast is opgenomen op 8 maart, inderdaad, Internationale Vrouwendag, op de presentatie van de Leidse 50, een lijst van 50 vrouwen die het afgelopen jaar het verschil maakten in Leiden. Tot mijn eigen grote trots sta ik zelf ook op de lijst, in de categorie 'overig', waarbij deze podcast een van de redenen was voor mijn nominatie!. Tijdens de borrel na de presentatie sprak ik kort met Hiske Faber, Gertru Diender, Ariëla Netiv, Gebke van Gaal, Joanne van der Leun, Nathalie Lecina en Fransje Barnard, en wat uitgebreider met Kirsten Zitman, de ambassadeur van de Leidse 50. Er komen een boel tips van allerlei aard voorbij, zoals het kookboek 'Sijtje op recept', 'Nobody's Wife' van Anouk en de documentaire for Sama. De belangrijkste tip komt van Fransje: 'Kijk om je heen en zie wat voor mens er naast je staat.' Laten we ons die vooral ter harte nemen! De foto is gemaakt door de onvolprezen Emile van Aelst, ook wel bekend als de Leidse Glibber.

Leen Bommels denkt aan zijn Zweedse vakantieliefde bij het horen van ‘Du är den Ende’ van Lill Lindfors. Voor Kees draaiden wij het toepasselijke ‘De Peel in Brand’ van Rowwen Heze. Meneer van Aelst graaft dieper naar liedjes over de vrijheid. En het boomcertificaat is voor opa Bareld Van Klinken, hij vroeg Hans Vermeulen met ‘Hilde’, speciaal voor zijn dochter en pasgeboren kleinzoon aan.

Veel verzoeken voor oude reclames, we draaiden er een aantal verspreid door de hele uitzending. Isolde vroeg ‘The Family Tree’ van Venice aan. Meneer van Aelst graaft dieper naar Camilla Blue. En het boomcertificaat is voor Gerard Wijngaarden met zijn verhaal bij ‘Room To Move’ - John Mayall.

Antie heeft een muziekkamer vol met posters van haar favoriete artiesten en in die kamer luistert ze graag naar ‘Heaven Can Wait’ van Meatloaf. Sjaak leest een prachtig gedicht over de lente. En meneer van Aelst brengt een ode aan John Prine in Meneer van Aelst graaft dieper. Het boomcertificaat is voor Auke Buke Paul van der Veer, de pasgeboren kleinzoon van Thea Dekker.

We draaiden veel verzoekjes over de wereld. ‘We are the World’ van USA For Africa, ‘What a Wonderful World’ van Louis Armstrong en nog vele andere. Meneer van Aelst vertelde over Neil Young in Meneer van Aelst graaft dieper. En het boomcertificaat is voor Jeannette met haar verhaal bij ‘We Shall Overcome’ van Bruce Springsteen.

Tjitske gaf de lievelingsplaat van haar dochter aan de kringloopwinkel. Om het goed te maken draaiden wij ‘The Eve Of The War’ van Jeff Wayne. Meneer van Aelst besprak het nummer 'You'll Never Walk Alone' in Meneer van Aelst graaft dieper. En het boomcertificaat is voor Jos Haan. Bij ‘In The Summertime’ van Mungo Jerry dwalen zijn gedachten af naar het jeugdkamp waar hij in de jaren 70 naar toe ging.

Aflevering van Goudmijn met Carine Lacor. Zij daalt samen met meneer van Aelst af naar muziek van Frans Halsema, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Rob de Nijs en Laurika Rauch. Het Boomcertificaat is voor Magda Breur, met haar herinnering bij ‘An American Trilogy’ van Elvis Presley

Fred Thus keek stiekem vanaf de trap naar het Spook van Louvre. Wij draaiden de tune van deze Franse serie en Fred wint met zijn verhaal het Goudmijn boomcertificaat. In de eerste editie van 'Meneer van Aelst graaft dieper' besprak hij Billie Eilish en draaiden wij haar versie van 'Yesterday'. Ook hadden we veel popmuziek met een klassieke oorsprong zoals 'The 5th' van Ekseption en 'All By My Self' van Eric Carmen.

Met een lach en een traan werd een goudgemalen jubileumuitzending gepresenteerd. Dit programma wordt al 25 jaar volgens dezelfde formule gemaakt, door de drie zelfde makers: Stefan Stasse, Jacques van Aelst en Margot Maas. Tijdens de jubileumuitzending, live vanuit theater City of Wesopa in Weesp gaven onder andere Hans de Booij, Thomas van Luyn, Peter van Bruggen, Henkjan Smits en Michelle David & The Gospel Sessions acte de presence! En Margot Maas neemt afscheid.

Joop en Els gingen 50 jaar geleden op huwelijksreis naar Zell am See met Du van Peter Maffay continu op de radio. We draaiden ook twéé platen van John Lennon: Mother en Beautiful Boy. En een nummer van Adriano Celentano: Storia d'Amore die meneer van Aelst van ver heeft moeten halen.

Televisiemaker Tim Van Aelst heeft maar liefst drie International Emmy-awards gewonnen. Met ‘Hoe zal ik het zeggen?', 'Benidorm Bastards’ en ‘Wat als?' kon hij deze beeldjes in de wacht slepen. Qua palmares kan dat tellen. Hoe heeft hij dat gedaan? Wat is zijn geheim? Wat is hij nog van plan? Waarom werd hij ooit klemgereden door een combi? Je hoort het allemaal in deze aflevering van de 10 Meest Gegoogelde Vragen. 

Ronnie vroeg het nummer So Long Marianne van Leonard Cohen aan. In 1975 werd dit nummer op de draaitafel gelegd tijdens de gezamenlijke afwas. Het nummer duurde die hele afwas. Er zitten een paar zoeknummers bij. Werk voor meneer van Aelst.

Today is National Banana Lovers Day. Botanically speaking, the banana is a berry - a many seeded fruit. And, banana trees are not trees. The banana plant is a giant herb. Inside the guts of the banana tree trunk is a white tube. It may be cooked, and tastes like bamboo shoots. Under a black light (ultraviolet or UV), ripe bananas glow a beautiful bright blue. Scientists believe this is a signal to banana eating animals like insects and bats that can see UV light. In 1690, the first shipments of bananas reached Salem, Massachusetts. They tried boiling them with pork. Needless to say, it took another 200 years for bananas to catch on in North America. Today, average U.S. banana consumption is almost 30 pounds per year. Until the early 1800s in Hawaii, most banana varieties were 'kapu' - forbidden for women of Hawaii to eat, under penalty of death. Banana's are facing a huge threat in the form of a pathogenic fungus called Fusarium wilt tropical race 4 (TR4) or Panama Disease. TR4 was first discovered in Taiwan in the 1990s. It has slowly made its way around the world. Just this month, on August 8th, researchers confirmed that TR4 is infecting banana plants in Latin America - Columbia declared a national state of emergency. This may seem extreme or over-reactive to people who don't realize that the fungus, TR4, lives in the soil for decades, making the land unlivable for future banana crops. TR4 first attacks the roots before spreading through the rest of the plant. Unfortunately, fungicides do not work against the disease. Thanks to Sir Joseph Paxton, the English gardener, architect and politician, who cultivated the Cavendish banana - who named it after William Cavendish, the 6th Duke of Devonshire who fancied them. In November 1935, five years after receiving a specimen imported from Mauritius, Joseph Paxton's plant finally flowered and by the following May it was loaded with more than 100 bananas, one of which won a medal at that year's Horticultural Society show. Today, bananas still grow on the Devonshire estate and the Cavendish banana is the most-consumed banana in the western world - it accounts for 99.9% of bananas in the western world - it accounts or 99.9% of bananas traded globally. It replaced a tastier variety who was wiped out be a fungal disease in the 1950s. Today, work is underway to create a Cavendish banana replacement. Although, earlier this month, a scientist predicted, "Eventually, it will not be possible to produce the Cavendish banana variety for international trade." We eat the variety of banana known as the Cavendish banana.     Brevities #OTD     Today is the birthday of Maria van Oosterwijck who was born on this day in 1630. Oosterwijck was an incredible Dutch Golden Age painter, specializing in flower paintings and still life. Her art was rich, vividly detailed, and incredibly realistic. Her still lifes of flowers in ornate vases were often set against a dark background and featured flowers like sunflowers, roses, carnations, hyacinths, parrot tulips, berries and her most famous paintings included a red admiral butterfly. In her 40's, her studio was opposite another flower painter by the name of Willem van Aelst. He attempted to woo Maria, but her heart belonged really only to her art. When he kept asking her, she finally agreed to marry him if he could prove that he could match her work ethic - he needed to paint every day, for 10 hours a day, for a year... only then would she marry him. Well, he couldn't do it and Maria remained single throughout her life. Oosterwijck's paintings were purchased by Kings and Emperors after she smartly secured an agent to market her work.       #OTD     Today is the birthday of the botanist Edwin James who was born on this day in Vermont in 1797. As a young man, James compiled the very first Flora of Vermont plants. James went on one of the first expeditions of the American West from Pittsburgh to the Rocky Mountains.  He discovered the mountain Columbine, Aquilegia caerulea which ultimately became known as the Colorado Blue Columbine and the State Flower of Colorado. An account of James' climb of Pikes Peak on July 13, 1820, states: "A little above the point where the timber disappears entirely, commences a region of astonishing beauty . . . covered with a carpet of low but brilliantly flowering alpine plants. . ." James' phrasing, "a region of astonishing beauty," became the title of a 2003 book on the botanical history of the Rocky Mountains by Roger Lawrence Williams. After the expedition, James married and settled in Burlington, Iowa. His home was a stop on the Underground Railroad. James died in 1861 after an accident. A monument to James was installed on Pike's Peak and the Des Moines County Medical Society planted Rocky Mountain Blue Columbine on his grave in the Rock Springs Cemetery. Newspaper accounts said the location was in the most picturesque part of southeastern Iowa.     #OTD    Today is the anniversary of the death of the botanist Emil Christian Hansen, who died on this day in 1909.     Prior to Hansen, brewing was a volatile experiment and batches could easily get infected with disease. Hansen forever changed the brewing industry with his discovery of way to separate pure yeast cells from wild yeast cells.     Hansen's method was created while he was working for the Carlsberg Laboratory.  But, Carlsberg Labs did not patent the process.  Instead, they decided to publish it; sharing all the details with brewers around the world   Hansen named the yeast after the lab – Saccharomyces Carlsbergensis – and samples of Carlsberg No. 1 (as it was called) were sent to breweries around the world by request and free of charge.  Within 5 years, most European breweries were using Carlsberg No. 1.  By 1892, American breweries, Pabst, Schlitz and Anheuser-Busch, were manufacturing their beers with pure yeast strains.   Emil Hansen was a renaissance man. In addition to his work in botany, he attempted careers an actor, a portrait artist, a teacher, an author, (he wrote under a pseudonym). And it was Emil Hansen who made the first Danish translation of Charles Darwin’s Voyage of The Beagle.     #OTD     Today is the birthday of the English botanist Brian Lawrence Burt who went by "Bill."   Burtt died in 2008. He is remembered for his contributions to the family Gesneriaceae; the family that includes African violets.   When Burtt started going on and plant expeditions in 1951, the Gesneriaceae family was poorly represented. Thanks to his work, plants were sent to Edinburgh which became the hub for the family. Burtt's collections started trends in England making both the African violet and the Streptocarpus household plants. The common name of Streptocarpus or "Streps" as they are called is the Cape primrose.   If you look online, you will see a picture of Bill Burtt, standing in a forest in South Africa on one of his botanizing trips. In his hands, he is holding a very large Streptocarpus grandis leaf that looks to be about 4-feet tall.     #OTD    Today in 1971, restaurateur and local fresh food activist Alice Waters opened California’s Iconic Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley, California.   Waters never intended to be a chef or to start a revolution. She just wanted to open a nice little restaurant that served fresh, good-tasting food.   When the restaurant opened on this night in 1971, Alice Waters personally greeted her customers at the door.       Unearthed Words "This was one of those perfect New England days in late summer where the spirit of autumn takes a first stealing flight, like a spy, through the ripening country-side, and, with feigned sympathy for those who droop with August heat, puts her cool cloak of bracing air about leaf and flower and human shoulders." - Sarah Orne Jewett, The Courting of Sister Wisby, 1887       Today's book recommendation: Nueva Salsa by Rafael Palomino Rafael Palomino is a world-famous chef, restauranteur, and cookbook author. Herbs like dill, comfrey, hyssop, fennel, and lovage work great in the back of your ornamental beds.     Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart 110 years ago today, a little article appeared in The St. John Weekly News out of St. John, Kansas. it was titled "Making Home Attractive" and it was written by Ruth Cameron. Here's what it said: "There ought not to be such thing as an unlovely home outside the city the next two months. For all the threadbare, barren spots of the poorest home may be covered and healed by the beauty brought in from outside. It takes but a very little time to bring some of the flowers that bloom In the fields and gardens into the house. And yet many a time I've seen the garden gay with rose and poppy, pansy and nasturtium, and the house flowerless or maybe illy decorated with one or two bowls of half decaying flowers. You haven't just the little time necessary? Then make it the children's daily 'task to keep the flower vases freshly filled. Teach them to have pride in it. Remember occasionally to comment in their presence to a visitor on some tasteful arrangement they have made, and you need never have an empty vase as long as the flowers last. And not only will you have beautified the house thereby, but you will also have curtailed Satan's proverbial chance of hunting up mischief for idle hands. If you can possibly manage it - and It's worth while to try to make the time even if you have to leave a few specks of dust on the mopboard behind the bookcase - go out occasionally with the children and help them gather the flowers. Teach them harmony of color and grace of arrangement. Perhaps in doing the latter, a principle [that] an artist friend taught me may help: "If possible never rearrange flowers," he said. "Just as you gather them is nature's arrangement and it Is best." And if you do manage to make some of these morning excursions with your children into the garden or field, the chances are that you will bring back to your work something even better than flowers. Don't be satisfied with a few vases. Have two or three in every room. Not just in the dining room and living room, but in every chamber and the kitchen for good measure. A vase of nasturtiums over the sink or a bowl of pansies on the kitchen table isn't going to make it any harder to do the dishes or fill the lamps. So many vases cost, you say? How much? For ten cents you can get a slim, tall glass vase that, filled with your peonies or roses, would be a fit ornament for a duchess' piano. For eleven cents you can buy a blue Japanese bowl that overflowlng with your nasturtiums, wouldn't look bad on a queen's breakfast table. And when you are picking the flowers that probably you've had too many of to half appreciate, don't forget the people who are unlucky enough to know how to appreciate a single flower. Probably, there is a flower mission handy ready to take anything you may give to these who need.
