Jesus, the King of Kings, does the unthinkable on the night before His crucifixion—He kneels to wash His disciples' feet. In this stunning act of humility, He redefines greatness, showing that true leadership is found in service. Though Peter resists, Jesus persists, teaching that we must first be served by Him before we can truly serve others. In a world obsessed with status and self-sufficiency, Jesus calls us to lay aside pride, embrace vulnerability, and follow His example of sacrificial love. Will we let Him cleanse us? And will we, in turn, serve others as He has served us?Time:MorningMinister:Rev. Taylor KernTexts:John 13:1–20Series:Gospel Culture in the Upper Room

Read OnlineJesus and his disciples set out for the villages of Caesarea Philippi. Along the way he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” Mark 8:27In answer to this question, the disciples informed Jesus that some thought He was “John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others one of the prophets.” But then Jesus asked the disciples who they thought He was. It was Peter who responded by saying, “You are the Christ.”As we ponder this exchange between Jesus and the disciples, try to hear our Lord ask you the same question. “But who do you say that I am?” Though you most likely will find this easy to answer on an intellectual level, don't answer it too quickly. Think about it. Deep within your soul, what do you believe about Jesus?Though Peter's answer is the correct answer, it's important to ponder what that actually means. This is especially evident by the fact that as soon as Jesus began to explain His mission as the Christ, Peter could not accept it. Jesus explained to Peter and the other disciples that, as the Christ, he would “suffer greatly and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and rise after three days.” In other words, Jesus wanted the disciples to understand the essence of His mission. His mission was one in which He would become the sacrificial Lamb of God and die for our sins. But this was too much for the disciples to immediately understand, accept and embrace with gratitude.Do you understand, accept and embrace this primary mission of Jesus? Do you understand that because of the sins you have personally committed, you need a Savior? Do you understand that the consequences of your sins are death? Eternal death? And do you further understand that it is only by Jesus' death that all sin and death are destroyed?Sometimes we can fall into the fallacy of thinking that Jesus is only an inspirational figure Who teaches us how we should live. And though that is true, Jesus is so much more. He is the one and only way to Heaven. Without His death and resurrection we cannot attain Heaven. He is the one and only Savior. The Lamb Who was slain for our sins. The one and only source of eternal redemption. The exclusive bridge between Heaven and humanity. And though you might understand this intellectually to a certain extent, your faith in this fact must enter deeply into your soul so that you can believe it and embrace His gift of eternal salvation within the deepest core of your being. This takes a radical understanding, acceptance and embrace if we are to truly receive the gift of Jesus' life. Reflect, today, upon how you would answer this question from our Lord. “Who do YOU say that I am?” If you are to answer this correctly, then it requires that you continually deepen your understanding, acceptance and full embrace of the saving mission of our Lord. Though this is a lifelong process, we must never stop entering more deeply into this divine mystery and gift so that we will become completely transformed by the life, death and resurrection of He Who is the Christ of God. Saving Lord, please open my mind and heart to You more deeply this day and every day of my life. May I continually go deeper in my faith and understanding of You and Your divine mission of salvation. As I do, please transform me more and more so that I will be more fully disposed to receive all that You came to bestow upon me. In this episode, we discuss the two pillars of the Church - Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Though Peter and Paul had some differences, their unity is symbolized by their love of Christ, which they embraced on their way to martyrdom. Read along with Father from 1 Corinthians 12: 1-20 "Now concerning spiritual things, my brethren, I would not have you ignorant. You know that when you were heathens, you went to dumb idols, according as you were led. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man, speaking by the Spirit of God, saith Anathema to Jesus. And no man can say the Lord Jesus, but by the Holy Ghost. Now there are diversities of graces, but the same Spirit; And there are diversities of ministries, but the same Lord; And there are diversities of operations, but the same God, who worketh all in all. And the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man unto profit. To one indeed, by the Spirit, is given the word of wisdom: and to another, the word of knowledge, according to the same Spirit; To another, faith in the same spirit; to another, the grace of healing in one Spirit; To another, the working of miracles; to another, prophecy; to another, the discerning of spirits; to another, diverse kinds of tongues; to another, interpretation of speeches. But all these things one and the same Spirit worketh, dividing to every one according as he will. For as the body is one, and hath many members; and all the members of the body, whereas they are many, yet are one body, so also is Christ. For in one Spirit were we all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Gentiles, whether bond or free; and in one Spirit we have all been made to drink. For the body also is not one member, but many. If the foot should say, because I am not the hand, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? And if the ear should say, because I am not the eye, I am not of the body; is it therefore not of the body? If the whole body were the eye, where would be the hearing? If the whole were hearing, where would be the smelling? But now God hath set the members every one of them in the body as it hath pleased him. And if they all were one member, where would be the body? But now there are many members indeed, yet one body."

From Luke 22:31-34, the Lord foretold Peter's denial, and He prayed for Peter in advance. He also knew that Peter would turn back to Him again and be able to strengthen his brothers. The Lord was full of hope for Peter. Though Peter fell, the Lord's personal love for him did not diminish even a bit. Furthermore, it's written in John how the Lord helped those who had a personal encounter with Him. John 21 mentioned about the Risen Lord, how He prepared a barbeque for the disciples, and talked to Peter. The Lord loved and cared for Peter and others at that time. Today, the Lord's love and care for us is the same.

Prayer That Changes HistoryOnce James had been murdered, Herod's religious Jewish contingent was thrilled with his initiative and applauded him. Suddenly he saw an easy way to gain favor with a party that had always given him such opposition. Acts 12:3 says, “When he [Herod] saw that it was pleasing to the Jews, he proceeded further and arrested Peter also” (AMP). This time things would be very different. Though Peter was ultimately set free through a miracle, the Scripture is careful to preface the story of his deliverance with the following statement, “prayer was made without ceasing of the church unto God for him” (Acts 12:5 KJV).This statement is very significant because the writer of Acts is trying to show us that the miraculous deliverance to follow would be a direct result of those fervent and persistent prayers that were offered up by the believers. The tragedy of James' death had shaken believers to the core and there was nothing complacent about their response. It was time to fervently pray!Oh, my friends, if we had any idea of the incredible power that is available to us through prayer, I think we would find it so easy to heed Paul's prompting to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Intercession is a privilege that belongs exclusively to man. No angel can intercede on our behalf nor can the angels intervene in earthy affairs according to their own will. However, as long as the enemy can keep the people of God convinced that they are powerless against the circumstances that they face, their impact on the earth will be anemic and of little influence. But that is not what God has in mind for His people. There's much, much more. Our prayers are one vehicle through which God has chosen to impact the world. God has given man not only the authority but also the responsibility to influence events on the earth for His glory. So let us shake off complacency and pray prayers that change history!

Wednesday, 12 October 2022   To Him all the prophets witness that, through His name, whoever believes in Him will receive remission of sins.” Acts 10:43   In The last verse were Peter's continued words to Cornelius, saying, “ and He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead.” Peter's words now continue with, “To Him all the prophets witness.”   It is referring to Jesus, and it is something that Scripture elsewhere explicitly teaches. For example, there is the account after the resurrection where Jesus spoke to the two as they walked on the road to Emmaus –   “'O foolish ones, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! 26 Ought not the Christ to have suffered these things and to enter into His glory?' 27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.” Luke 24:25-27   Likewise, in Acts 3, Peter said to the crowd gathered before him –   “Yet now, brethren, I know that you did it in ignorance, as did also your rulers. 18 But those things which God foretold by the mouth of all His prophets, that the Christ would suffer, He has thus fulfilled.” Acts 3:17, 18   These are just a few of the references to this, both from Jesus' words and from those of the apostles. One important point from the witness of the prophets is that of Gentile inclusion in the work of Messiah. Though Peter does not express the thought at this time, it is a truth that both points to the work of Jesus and the calling of the Gentiles –   “Indeed He says, ‘It is too small a thing that You should be My Servant To raise up the tribes of Jacob, And to restore the preserved ones of Israel; I will also give You as a light to the Gentiles, That You should be My salvation to the ends of the earth.'” Isaiah 49:6   Of these words of the prophets, Peter next says, “that, through His name.” The translation is correct. The word dia, or through, is used. It signifies that what will next be said will come about based on an action that is “through” the name of Jesus.   Of this, Vincent's Word Studies says, “As in the Lord's prayer: not simply the title, but all that is embraced and expressed by the name: Christ's ‘entire perfection, as the object revealed to the believer for his apprehension, confession, and worship' (Meyer).” Peter next says that the means of this “through” action is based upon “whoever believes.”   The Greek reads “everyone believing.” Notice that Peter, who is now speaking to Gentiles who are outside of the covenant people Israel, does not say “who observes,” “who is circumcised,” “who joins himself to,” or any other prescription where some type of self-expressed work must be performed. Rather, Peter levies upon these people an act of faith alone, saying, “everyone believing.” And the object of this faith is, “in Him.”   This is just what Jesus says in John 3:16. It is what is repeated time and time again in Acts and in the epistles. There is no other requirement levied upon the individual than belief in Jesus. If giving up a certain diet was required, Peter would have stated this now. If observance of the Law of Moses was required, Peter would have stated this now. And so on. But he does not. He simply says that everyone believing in Him. With that, and based upon believing in Him, the words are completed with “will receive remission of sins.”   The word is aphesis. It signifies “something sent away.” As such, it is a note that the sins of the believer are “sent away” and thus they are pardoned, forgiven, let go, and so on. This is the heart of the gospel. It is a note that God has entered into the stream of human existence and, through the giving of His Son, has allowed those who accept the payment to be given remission of sins. This allowance is appropriated by faith in Jesus, and it is granted to everyone who is believing in Him.   Life application: What is the common denominator concerning these Gentiles gathered together? For the sake of the narrative, it is that they are all sinners. Peter implicitly tells them this by saying that they need to believe in Jesus in order to have remission of sins. In his words, he carefully explains how this remission is provided.   Again, as noted above, Peter said nothing of law observance. He said nothing of actively working out a set plan that must be pursued by the sin-laden soul. Rather, the set plan is one that calls out for belief in the Person of Jesus who had accomplished the work of God, who had then been hanged on a tree, and who was then raised by God on the third day.   This is what God requires. Nothing more. This will be perfectly evidenced in the next verse. Peter does not say, “You must believe in Jesus and turn from your sin.” That cannot even be inferred in his words. He says that remission of their sin comes through faith. Thus, turning from sin is an act that is to be based upon remission, not for remission. If this were not true, then it would be the act of the individual that brought about the remission. This would then totally destroy the purity of the gospel and it would negate the idea of Ephesians 2:8, 9 –   “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, 9 not of works, lest anyone should boast. 10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”   Paul places the “good works,” which would include turning from sin, after the belief, not before. Be sure to get this, remember it, and properly present it when speaking to others about their need for Jesus. This is the gospel. Come to Jesus, believe in Him, and be saved.   Lord God, help us to remember to keep ourselves and our actions out of the gospel message. It is all about Jesus and what He has done. May we never presume to add to this wonderful message, but to maintain its purity when we speak to others. It is about Jesus, it is through Jesus, and it is by faith in Him that the gospel is realized in us. Thank You, O God, for Jesus Christ our Lord! Hallelujah and amen.

For additional notes and resources check out Douglas' website.John 19 concludes with the burial of Jesus. Now, in John 20, it is Sunday morning, the third day since the crucifixion -- and the tomb is empty!20:1 Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. Only the Romans were permitted to open this tomb. We learn from Matthew 27:65-66; 28:4,11 that a guard had been dispatched there on Saturday.A copy of a decree by the emperor Claudius (41-54 AD) was found at Nazareth. It orders execution for those destroying tombs, breaking seals, or removing bodies or closure stones.2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went toward the tomb. 4 The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, 7 and the cloth that had been on Jesus' head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples returned to their homes.None expect the resurrection, despite Jesus' frequent and emphatic prediction of this event:John 2:19Matthew 16:21; 17:23; 20:19; 27:64Mark 8:31; 9:31; 10:34Luke 9:22; 18:33Mary of Magdala is the first to find the open, empty tomb (v.1).Immediately she runs to tell the news to the apostles, who receive her message as nonsense (Luke 24:11).Peter and the Beloved Disciple run to the tomb (v.4).The Beloved Disciple sees the graveclothes (v.5). The presence of the graveclothes shows there has been no robbery.Though Peter arrives first, the Beloved Disciple allows him to enter first. Peter sees the graveclothes and the face cloth (v.7).Neither yet understood the scriptural truth that Christ must rise from the dead (v.9), and so they simply go home.Mary, on the other hand, remains at the gravesite (v.11).11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; 12 and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 When she had said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you looking for?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary!” She turned and said to him in Hebrew,“Rabbouni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”; and she told them that he had said these things to her.Mary remains at the gravesite (v.11).She is distressed. It would have been very unsettling to think that the body of her Lord has been stolen, mistreated, or abused.Looking again into the tomb, she sees angels sitting at either end of the place where the body of Jesus should have been (v.12). They ask her why she is weeping, and she tells them.Turning around, she sees Jesus (v.14), though not recognizing him. He repeats the question: "Woman, why are you weeping?"She thinks (hopes?) he is the gardener, and will be able to show her where the body has been placed (v.15).Jesus reveals his identity (v.16), and Mary falls at his feet, desiring his presence and wanting him to remain. Since Mary is one of his sheep (10:3-4,14,16,27), she recognizes his voice when he calls her by name.Jesus, however, cannot stay. He must return to heaven -- though not immediately (v.17).For a second time Mary makes an announcement to the apostles, but this time it is not only about an empty tomb, but about a risen Lord.It is clear from verse 17 that Jesus had not yet gone into heaven as of Sunday. And yet he told the penitent thief (Luke 23:43), "Today you will be with me in paradise." By far the simplest explanation is that paradise and heaven are not necessarily the same place. For more on this, click here. The fact that the gospels report the testimony of women to Jesus' resurrection is remarkable, since such testimony was not normally accepted in a court of law.If the resurrection were a fabrication, it would not have been written this way!The truth is, it isn't a fabrication at all.19 When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21 Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”On Easter evening, Jesus himself appears, walking through a closed door (v.19).The doors were locked for fear of the Jewish leaders. The psychological state of the disciples is depressed. They seem to have lost hope. What can explain the metamorphosis in the apostles? (See Acts 4:13.) The resurrection of Christ from the dead explains it perfectly.Jesus, in his resurrection body, walks through closed doors. He wishes them peace (shalom); on the cross he had cried out, "It is finished!" (tetélestai); the two are connected. Now there is peace between God and man, as a result of his atoning death. See Romans 5:1ff.Jesus shows them his wounds (v.20).Again he wishes them shalom (v.21), and commissions them -- or reminds them of their commission -- as apostles (sent ones). He breathes on them (v.22), giving them the Holy Spirit. The breathing in to them is reminiscent of Genesis 2:7 and Ezekiel 37:9-10. They are being created anew. This can also be read as a prophetic action, illustrating that they will receive the Spirit (at Pentecost). In verse 23 he also gives the apostles the right to grant or refuse remission of sins (in baptism). The verb is perfect: the sins have been forgiven or possibly will have been forgiven. That is, the apostles are not forgiving sins themselves, but ratifying the action of God in forgiving others through Christ. There is a similar passage in Matthew 18:18, in the context of church discipline. For more on vv.22-23, click here.24 But Thomas (who was called the Twin), one of the twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord.” But he said to them, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger in the mark of the nails and my hand in his side, I will not believe.”26 A week later his disciples were again in the house, and Thomas was with them. Although the doors were shut, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here and see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it in my side. Do not doubt but believe.” 28 Thomas answered him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Jesus said to him, “Have you believed because you have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have come to believe.”Thomas (Didymus, the Greek word for twin) is absent Easter evening, and expresses his skepticism (vv.24-25). But one week later (Sunday night) he is present when Jesus appears. Again Jesus walks through closed doors (v.26).His doubt confronted and overturned, Thomas sees the wounds and confesses his faith. (Despite the depictions of several famous paintings, it seems doubtful that he put hand into Jesus' wounds.)Thomas realizes that Jesus is Lord and God. He is the same Deity who appears in all of scripture. Notice that Jesus makes no effort to correct this perception, for he is God (1:1,14,18; 10:30).This passage shows us that God understands our need for evidence, for proof. Doubt can be constructive, and can be an important element in building genuine faith.Once our questions have been answered, God expects us to respond in faith and obedience.Note: "After eight days" (v.26) is inclusive reckoning (common usage). Thus the events of two consecutive Sundays are recounted.Thomas' confession of faith (v.28) stands over against the confession the evil emperor Domitian (81-96 AD) required of his subjects: Dominus et deus noster ("Our Lord and God"). The readers of this gospel would thus have been strengthened to resist temptation to cave in to pressure to join in emperor worship. Emperor worship was especially prevalent at the end of the first century in western Asia Minor -- the location of John's ministry."Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed" (v.29).Most persons, like the readers of John -- and us -- will believe in Christ without seeing any signs. Such faith is highly commended. See 2 Corinthians 5:7.Here we also find the second beatitude in John. The other is in 13:17.More beatitudes are found in Matthew 5:3ff (and parallels in Luke 6:20ff), 11:6; 13:16; 24:46; Acts 20:35; Revelation 1:3; 14:13; 16:15; 19:9; 20:6; 22:7; 22:14. But this by no means exhausts the list.30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book. 31 But these are written so that you may come to believethat Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that through believing you may have life in his name.Jesus' signs are intended to lead us to and reinforce our faith (vv.30-31).The writer has selected only a few signs for our benefit. The actual number of miracles Jesus did is much greater. It is not necessary to personally witness miracles in order to believe. Reading about them is enough. (For more on this, see Luke 16:31 and another dozen passages in the N.T. stressing the point.)Only by faith (believing) can we have life in Jesus' name.Faith is a major theme in John. The Greek nouns and verbs appear nearly 90 times in this gospel!Do you believe?Further to verse 31, there is a similar saying by Rabbi Simeon ben Laqish (c.250 AD): "The proselyte is dearer to God than all the Israelites who stood by Mount Sinai. For if all the Israelites had not seen the thunder, and the flames, and the lightnings, and the quaking mountain, and the sound of the trumpet, they would not have accepted the Law and taken upon themselves the kingdom of God. Yet this man has seen none of all these things, yet comes and gives himself to God. Is there any who is dearer than this man?" (Tanh. 6, 32a.)The Greek verb in verse 31 appears in two forms in surviving manuscripts: pisteusete and pisteuete. Though both mean "believe," the first is an aorist, meaning to believe in the sense of coming to faith. The second means to believe or continue to believe. Perhaps we do not have to choose what the writer had in mind, since both are valid responses to the evidence for Christ. Most scholars believe that the original gospel ended at verse 31. There are reasons to view chapter 21 as an appendix.Thought questions:If you were the one visiting the tomb early on Easter morning, what would have been in your thoughts on seeing the stone rolled away?If you are a man, how would you have reacted when Mary (and other women) announced that they had met he risen Lord?If you are a woman, do you relate to the question of the angels and Jesus, "Woman, why are you weeping?"? Is there something in your life that is causing you great distress? Do you know and feel that God understands and cares? Can you think of any better explanation than Jesus' resurrection for the stunning transformation in his disciples? How much do you relate to Thomas? Do doubt and questioning function in a positive way to build your faith?Compare Mary Magdalene and the apostle Thomas. How are they similar? different? What are the differences in how Jesus treats them?

Wednesday, 29 June 2022   Then Simon answered and said, “Pray to the Lord for me, that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.” Acts 8:24   Peter has completed his words of reproof towards Simon. In them, he said, “Repent therefore of this your wickedness, and pray God if perhaps the thought of your heart may be forgiven you” (8:22). In response to the sum of Peter's words, Luke now records, “Then Simon answered and said.”   His words are in response to everything Peter has said, but they are directed to both Peter and John. This is evidenced in the next words, “Pray to the Lord for me.” The Greek reads “Pray (plural) earnestly you (plural) on behalf of me to the Lord.”   Though Peter has been recorded as the speaker, Simon is addressing both Peter and John and is asking for earnest prayers to be made for him. He then specifically asks “that none of the things which you have spoken may come upon me.”   It implies a full understanding of the consequences of his words and actions and hopes for a reprieve from them. Unfortunately, in an effort to convince us that Simon could not be saved, Bible scholars will note various supposed defects in Simon's thinking and build upon them to show that he was not a part of the body of believers. Such defects included (but are not limited to):   He is unwilling to pray for himself, even though Peter told him to pray to God. He doesn't ask for deliverance from being bound by iniquity, but for relief from the things that Peter had said would come upon him.   Both of these points are easily refutable. First, and has been noted several times, verse 8:13 clearly and unambiguously stated that Simon “believed.” Either the words of Jesus and the epistles (also found repeatedly in Acts) are true or they are not. The premise is, “Believe in the work of Jesus and you will be saved.” Simon is not an exception to this truth; he is clearly an integral part of it.   Secondly, the word huper is used, here translated as “for.” In this case, it signifies “on my behalf.” The same word is used in the same manner repeatedly in this same context, meaning having someone praying for someone else. Examples of this are found in 2 Corinthians 9:14, Ephesians 6:18, 2 Timothy 2:1, 2, and James 5:16.   It is to be remembered that in believing the gospel that was preached by Phillip, the Holy Spirit did not come upon any in Samaria. There is a set purpose for this, and it is realized in the coming of Peter and John to validate what occurs. In the laying on of their hands, the Spirit then came upon the believers.   As this is the case, it is not only natural but wholly expected, that Simon would appeal to the same people, through whom this gift was imparted, to ask them to pray on his behalf.   Thirdly, his asking both Peter and John to pray shows an understanding of the power of the prayer of many. This is in accord with 2 Corinthians 1:11 where Paul plainly shows that the prayers of the many are considered right and appropriate.   Fourth, in asking for prayers from the penalty of his actions, it means that he understands and is acknowledging that his actions are wrong. Thus, it further implies that he is looking for freedom from the iniquity that binds him.   Fifth, Peter had encouraged Simon to pray to “God.” Simon, instead, asks Peter and John to pray to the “Lord,” clearly indicating Jesus. As such, he has directly confessed that he believes Jesus is 1) alive, 2) capable of answering prayer, and 3) God. Peter said to pray to God; Simon equates Jesus with God. Simon has met the qualification of believing the gospel message that he is already said to have “believed” in verse 8:13.   Jesus died for his sins, Jesus was buried, and Jesus rose again – all according to Scripture. The case against Simon's salvation fails the sniff test. He believed the gospel, he accepted that Jesus is God, and he is – according to the words of Jesus and the apostles (as recorded in Acts and the epistles) – saved.   Life application: No two people on the planet now, nor any two people who have ever trusted in Christ, are on the same level of maturity. If one's level of maturity in Christ defined salvation, then no person would ever be saved. This is because everyone in Christ can (and should) increase in the knowledge of the word, in applying that knowledge to his walk, and in turning around and being an example to others of his position in Christ.   If a person who is increasing in knowledge finds out he was wrong in a particular point of doctrine and corrects that, when was he saved? The fallacy of judging salvation based on poor doctrine is known as the fallacy of the beard. When a person doesn't shave, when does his facial hair become a beard? After 2 seconds? After 1 day? After it is ¼ inch long? Who determines that? What is the set and fixed standard?   Salvation is based upon belief alone in the one and only gospel, nothing else. Be sure to determine if a person has believed and accepted that. However, it is acceptable to find out exactly what that person has believed. If a person has believed that Jesus was a created being that died for his sins, he is not saved. If a person has believed that Jesus may have fulfilled the law, but he is told (and believes) that the law is still binding on those who come to him and that he must do stuff to be saved, then he is not saved. Etc.   In a proper presentation of the gospel, and in the receiving of that by a person, the person who believes is saved. From there, it is up to that person to grow in Christ.   Heavenly Father, thank You for the simplicity of the gospel. Help us to share it accurately and often so that those who hear may believe rightly and be saved. Amen.

2 Peter 1:12-15 | Andrew Murch | Little yellow sticky notes often fill our work and living spaces with REMINDERS! Take the car in for an oil change, schedule an appointment, cancel that subscription, and on it goes. How come we always forget about that one? Like these sticky notes, Peter is delivering his final reminders in this letter, but here in verses 12-15 we get a glimpse into his heart behind his final instructions. Peter reminds the church of the Christlike qualities he listed in the previous verses and says he will continually remind them of these. Perhaps it's because Peter's recipients, much like us, need constant reminders in our lives. It is easy for us to slip into old patterns of sin or to become blind to the reality of our new life in Christ. These words are for them and for us that we would remember what Christ has done and live in light of that. We also see that Peter appears to know these may be his final words and reminders. He shares he will soon be killed for his faith and chooses his reminders carefully. Though Peter would indeed be martyred, the Church for thousands of years later would hear these words of the Holy Spirit through Peter you're reading today.

Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Oschwald, professor of exegetical theology at Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, MO, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Acts 1:1-11. In his Gospel, St. Luke told what Jesus began to do and teach. Now, in Acts, St. Luke tells what Jesus continues to do and teach through His Word proclaimed in the Church. Acts was written to Theophilus in order to show how the Word of the Lord continued to grow and bear fruit through the proclamation of the work of the apostles. Though Peter and Paul tend to be the dominant human actors, the Word of the Lord does all the work in the book of Acts. The account begins where the Gospel ended: the ascension of Jesus. His teaching for forty days after His resurrection was all about the kingdom of God. When the disciples asked if there was still a role for them in that kingdom, Jesus promised that they would be witnesses of all that He had done and would continue to do. They watched as Jesus' ascended into heaven, hidden by a cloud, until two angels told them that Jesus would return the way they saw Him go. As the ascended Lord, Jesus continues as the trailblazer for His people; where He is, there we too will be. “To the End of the Earth” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the book of Acts. In his second volume, St. Luke records all the things that Jesus continued to do through the ministry of His Church. By the end of the book, the proclamation of the Lord's Word that began in Jerusalem grows all the way to Rome. By God's grace, even now, that same Word is proclaimed to us.

Not only does the report detail all three seasons of his Netflix adventures, but it also mentions that "Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker."   Here's the excerpt of the important part:   Soon after, Matt attended the funeral for Father Lantom, where he made peace with Sister Maggie. Now in a better state of mind than he had been in quite a while, Matt fully reconciled with Karen and Foggy and the three of them discussed the idea of reforming their law firm with Karen now as the firm's lead investigator and third partner.   Sometime later, Matt was hired as an attorney to defend Peter Parker, as Peter had been publicly outed as Spider-Man and accused of Mysterio's murder. Though Peter was legally cleared of any wrongdoing, Matt warned him he'd still have to face the court of public opinion and advised Harold “Happy” Hogan to hire a good lawyer. As if on cue, a protestor threw a brick through the window of the Parkers' apartment in support of Mysterio. Fortunately, due to his heightened senses, Matt was able to catch the brick before it hurt anyone inside. When Peter asked him how he was able to do that, Matt claimed it was because he was a really good lawyer and left it at that.   Marvel's confirmation that Murdock became Peter Parker's lawyer "Sometime later" than the dramatic ending of Daredevil Season 3 appears to indicate Charlie Cox will continue playing the same version of his character, not a Multiversal Variant as many had speculated.   DISNEY+   Disney+ Removes Stan Lee Tribute From Marvel Netflix Show https://thedirect.com/article/marvel-stan-lee-tribute-disney-netflix-show A tribute to Stan Lee has been removed from The Punisher's second season finale, which was released in January 2019. Rev. Luke Zimmerman, pastor at Calvary Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mechanicsburg, PA, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Luke 9:28-36. On the mountain of transfiguration, Peter, James, and John see a preview of the Lord's resurrection glory to come. The glory with which Jesus shines in brilliant white is His own glory as God. Moses and Elijah appear and begin speaking to Jesus about His exodus, which He will accomplish by His death, resurrection, and ascension. Though Peter speaks without understanding, the Father's voice reveals the truth concerning Jesus. He is the beloved Son to whom they must listen, particularly in what He teaches concerning His suffering, death, and resurrection. Though now is not the moment for Peter, James, and John to speak about this glory of Jesus, the time will come after Jesus' resurrection when the good news concerning Jesus will go out into all the world. “The Beloved Physician's Orderly Account” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the Gospel according to St. Luke. The Evangelist wrote his well-researched account of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection so that Theophilus would have certainty concerning the things he had been taught. As we still read the Word of God recorded by St. Luke, our gracious Lord gives us that same certainty that Jesus is our Savior.

Though Peter is able to confess the identity of Jesus as the Christ by the inspiriation of the Father, he quickly falls victim to the influence of Satan by denying the Cross. There is no salvation in Jesus Christ but by His Cross. For this reason we boast with St. Paul in the Cross of Christ. Study Notes Ed Underwood 2 Peter: Grow in Grace and Knowledge! But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ (2 Peter 3:18). The nine General Epistles point to the person and work of the resurrected Christ. They encourage Christians to cling to Him and exhort them to serve Him faithfully because He is the only source of life. Written primarily to persecuted Jewish Christians, the truths apply to every believer from every culture and in every age of church history. Though Peter’s letters are grouped with the General Epistles, they are primarily to the mostly Gentile churches of Asia Minor (1 Peter 1:1). His first letter encourages these fledgling churches to stand firm in grace in the face of suffering (1 Peter 5:12). The second letter admonishes them to grow in grace in the face of false teaching (2 Peter 3:18). Here is a rough comparison of the two: 1 Peter “suffering” 16X External Opposition Suffering from Persecution Need for Submission to Christ Comfort to the Hurting Hope in the Lord’s Return 2 Peter “knowledge” 16X Internal Opposition Heresy from Apostasy Need for Knowledge of Christ Caution to the Vulnerable Confidence in the Lord’s Return Second Peter was written shortly before his martyrdom (1:13-15) and it reads in many ways like a last will and testament. Early church tradition says that Peter spent his last decade in Rome and the church fathers write that he died there in A.D. 67-68. Like Paul’s 2 Timothy, 2 Peter is Peters’ last message to the church. He focuses on the internal turmoil caused by false teachers whose destructive heresies (2:1) can neutralize a believer’s impact for Christ. Since what we believe determines how we behave, false teaching always leads to a life of self-centered immorality. The only antidote to the impact of false teachers is a strong emphasis on the truth of Scripture and training in the skills of applying those truths to real life by grace. “The purpose of 2 Peter is to call Christians to spiritual growth so that they can combat apostasy as they look forward to the Lord’s return.” (Kenneth Gangel, “2 Peter,” in The Bible Knowledge Commentary, p. 862): Second Peter deals with the proper response to erroneous teaching within the church: Know the truth and use your power to apply the truth to your life. I. Peter exhorts Christians to fulfill their responsibilities as recipients of grace by accessing the power of God and claiming the promises of God so that they will realize their potential and maintain purity. Diligently appropriate your resources in Christ—true knowledge of Jesus Christ (1). Because of your great and precious promises in Christ, move forward in your faith to be more like Him. Hold fast to the truth of the inspired Scriptures. Resist false teachers who undermine the confidence of believers and entice them into error and sin (2). Peter exposes the motives and dangers of these self-absorbed and arrogant false teachers. Diligently appropriate your resource in Christ—the promises of God in prophecy (3). In spite of mockers who say that Jesus will not return, the day of he Lord will surely come and God will make all things right.   2 Peter: Live responsibly as a recipient of grace—know Christ and live for Him! II. 2 PETER AND YOU: If you’re a Christian you have received all the grace you will ever need to live for Christ. With this grace comes the responsibility to use that grace to glorify Him. We are responsible to use God’s power and to claim His promises. Here are four steps toward living out the full potential of our new life in Christ Jesus: A. Know Your Grace Resources. The more you know Christ, the more you will realize how rich you are in His grace. “I can pray this because his divine power has bestowed on us everything necessary for life and godliness through the rich knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and excellence. Through these things he has bestowed on us his precious and most magnificent promises, so that by means of what was promised you may become partakers of the divine nature, after escaping the worldly corruption that is produced by evil desire” (2 Peter 1:3). B. Know Your Grace Responsibilities. Since we have the power of God and the Word of God, we should diligently pursue disciplines that equip us to grow in the grace and the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. “For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith excellence [moral excellence], to excellence, knowledge; to knowledge, self-control; to self-control, perseverance; to perseverance, godliness; to godliness, brotherly affection; to brotherly affection, unselfish love. For if these things are really yours and are continually increasing, they will keep you from becoming ineffective and unproductive in your pursuit of knowing our Lord Jesus Christ more intimately. But concerning the one who lacks such things—he is blind. That is to say, he is nearsighted, since he has forgotten about the cleansing of his past sins. Therefore, brothers and sisters, make every effort to be sure of your calling and election. For by doing this you will never stumble into sin. For thus an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, will be richly provided for you.” (2 Peter 1:5-11) C. Know How to Identify a False Teacher. Second Peter 2 gives us five identifying characteristics of a false teacher: They deny the sufficiency of Christ. “These false teachers will infiltrate your midst with destructive heresies, even to the point of denying the Master who bought them. As a result, they will bring swift destruction on themselves” (2 Peter 2:1). Theirsinfullifestyle.“Andmanywillfollowtheirdebauchedlifestyles”(2Peter2:2). Their greed and self-absorbed lifestyle. “And in their greed they will exploit you with deceptive words” (2 Peter 2:3). They brazenly speak of demons as if a fallen angel is subject to their personal power. “Brazen and insolent, they are not afraid to insult the glorious ones, yet even angels, who are much more powerful, do not bring a slanderous judgment against them before the Lord. But these men, like irrational animals—creatures of instinct, born to be caught and destroyed—do not understand whom they are insulting, and consequently in their destruction they will be destroyed” (2 Peter 2:11-12). They entice immature believers by offering them a freedom that isn’t freedom at all, but a return to the slavery of sin. “Although these false teachers promise such people freedom, they themselves are enslaved to immorality. For whatever a person succumbs to, to that he is enslaved” (2 Peter 2:11). D. Know your Bible, especially prophecy. “Above all, you do well if you recognize this: No prophecy of scripture ever comes about by the prophet’ s own imagination, for no prophecy was ever borne of human impulse; rather, men carried along by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Peter 1:20-21).Above all, understand this: In the last days blatant scoffers will come, being propelled by their own evil urges and saying, ‘Where is his promised return? For ever since our ancestors died, all things have continued as they were from the beginning of creation.’ For they deliberately suppress this fact. (2 Peter 3:3-5)

Rev. Phil Hoppe, pastor at Peace Lutheran Church in Finlayson, MN and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bruno, MN, joins host Rev. Timothy Appel to study Mark 9:2-13. Jesus’ trip with Peter, James, and John up a high mountain recalls the Old Testament revelations the LORD gave to His people on mountains. On this high mountain, Jesus’ appearance and clothes are transformed by the divine glory that is His. The appearance of Moses and Elijah reminds us that the prophets who came before Jesus pointed to Him and His work as the Savior. Though Peter does not know what to say, the voice of the Father identifies Jesus as His beloved Son and commands us to listen to Him, particularly what He has just said about His suffering, death, and resurrection. Although the disciples did not understand it at the time, this amazing event in our Lord’s ministry invites us to see that the One who suffers and dies for us is the one true God who has all glory. “The Gospel in Action” is a mini-series on Sharper Iron that goes through the Gospel according to St. Mark. The Evangelist hits the ground running with the very first verse of his Gospel account, and he never lets up the pace. As one deed of Jesus comes right after another, always paired with His authoritative Word, St. Mark proclaims the good news that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, revealed conclusively by His death on the cross.

Into the BookDraw Closer to ChristRead or WatchWhat do you look for in a friend? In one of my kids' favorite movies, a toy cowboy overcomes his jealousy and acts with courageous loyalty. As Randy Newman's well-known theme song says:"You got troubles, and I got 'em tooThere isn't anything I wouldn't do for youWe stick together, and we see it through'Cause you've got a friend in me."In our readings this week, we'll get an intimate look at Jesus in the hours before his betrayal and crucifixion. Even in his time of trial, the Lord gives attention to his friends, preparing them for life after his death.Friends LoveThe word "love" is used twenty times in John 14-15, as Jesus expresses his commitment to them and calls them into loving, obedient fellowship with him and his Father. On Monday (John 14), Christ tells them not to let their hearts be troubled but to believe in him (John 14:1). He's going away, but he will make a way for them to be together again (John 14:3). In fact, Jesus is the "way the truth and the life" (John 14:6). Jesus promises that the Holy Spirit, "the Helper" (John 14:26), will remind them of everything Jesus said. And so, he leaves them with peace (John 14:27). On Tuesday (John 15), the Lord says to hold onto him, abiding in him, so that we can bear fruit (John 15:2). Like branches apart from the vine, Jesus tells his disciples, "apart from me, you can do nothing" (John 15:5). So, when the world hates us, we remember that they hated him first (John 15:18-20), and we stay close to Jesus. What do Jesus' true friends do (John 15:14)?Friends SupportOn Wednesday (John 16), Jesus continues his final encouragement to his disciples before his death. Rather than being filled with sorrow, he tells them, "It is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you" (John 16:7). And with the Holy Spirit's help, their sadness will turn to joy (John 16:20). Though they will all be scattered after his death, they'll quickly find courage as they see how Christ has overcome the world (John 16:33)!On Thursday (John 17), Jesus lifts his eyes to heaven in a moving prayer to the Father. He calls on God to "glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed" (John 17:5). He recalls his work on earth and asks the Lord to strengthen, protect, and unify his beloved disciples (John 17:11-12). Though the world will hate them, just like it hated him, he prays for "evil one" to be kept at bay (John 17:14-15). And, in a sense, he prays for you and I today — those who believe through the disciple's words (John 17:20-21).How does the Holy Spirit's work continue to support you today? What do you learn about the importance of unity from Jesus' prayer?Friends Show DedicationFinally, on Friday (John 18), we watch two of Jesus' friends turn their backs on him — as Judas betrays him (John 18:2-3), and Peter denies knowing him (John 18:15-18, 25-27). Though Peter displays courage in defending Jesus in the garden, he's reminded of his mission when the Lord asks, "Shall I not drink the cup that the Father has given me?" (John 18:11). After Annas (John 18:12-14) and Caiphas, the high priest, questioned him (John 18:19-24), he went to Pilate, the Roman governor (John 18:28-38). And after Pilate finds nothing to accuse him of, the crowds turn their backs on him, asking to release a criminal rather than the King of kings (John 18:38-40).How do Peter's denials help you become more dedicated to the Lord?Support the Show

Acts 10:1-33 records a fascinating story about the Apostle Peter, a man considered one of Jesus' closest friends and a pillar of the new testament church. Though Peter had an extradorinaiy leadership role in the early church, he still allowed his past religious and cultural baggage to cloud his vision of God's grand purposed for the salvation of the nations. Peter was a man out of step with the gospel. Yet though he is often complicated and full of inconsistencies, he is a man we can relate with. God called Peter share the message of Christ with a gentile man and his household, people the culture considered unclean. Who might you be asking you to share the message of the gospel with?

In this episode of The Property Nomads Podcast, Rob talks to The Property Teacher himself, Peter Jones! With over 40 years of experience in property, Peter is one of the best individuals out there who can give us the ultimate tips and strategies to know when starting a property business. Aside from being a property investor and an entrepreneur, Peter is also an author, a mentor, and a Chartered Surveyor. He shares today some stories from the years he spent in corporate to taking the leap to build his own property portfolio and finally to scaling up his property business.   One of the big takeaways from this episode is it's important to know what your end goals are, to understand why you want to achieve them, and to fully commit to doing it!  Sign Up For MSOPI Here: https://bit.ly/msopi-nomad KEY TAKEAWAYS  There is no right or wrong way. Before you accept any advice from property experts, make sure it aligns with your values, your principles, and your objectives. Your path will be very unique. So, as much as possible, tweak it based on what you believe will work for you.  The 9-to-5 job is not for everybody. Though Peter had notable success in the corporate world—he was promoted as a partner in a well-known firm—he felt it wasn't his playground. The property field is where he felt fulfilment and growth.  Set your goals. Write them down, cling onto it, re-read them, evaluate them, and always make sure you do the small and big tasks that will make everything fruitful. Some goals would require you to do things beyond what you thought you're capable of but don't let your doubts and fears hinder you. Do it.  Peter's portfolio includes 73 buy-to-let's, 2 HMO's and more. Lately, he's been exploring in building houses.  Peter's one key advice: It's all about the mindset. Being able to persevere when things get tough, being prepared to borrow the money and taking the action needs your unstoppable mindset.  Communication is very important. Every person differs in their verbal and non-verbal communication. So, with every client, every partner, or every investor you interact with, make sure you observe and learn how they communicate. This kind of skill increases your chances in closing more deals.  The property business is all about finding deals and raising finance. When you have everything in place in your property portfolio, then it's time to look into leveraging talents (hiring your staff) so you can focus on growing your business.  BEST MOMENTS  “Freedom is what it's all about for me.”  “In the normal course of things, freedom is generated by the money.”  “I'm a firm believer of pushing yourself out of your comfort zone.”  “Human beings are goal-seeking and goal-achieving creatures.”  “Speed is just as important as saving in the process.”  “It's hard to lose everything in property; it's almost a theoretical concept.”  “Commit to make the change.”  VALUABLE RESOURCES  Tony Robbins - https://www.tonyrobbins.com   The Property Teacher - www.thepropertyteacher.co.uk   The Property Nomads  Email Rob at rob@thepropertynomads.com   ABOUT THE GUEST  Peter Jones is a Chartered Surveyor, an author and a serial buy-to-let property investor. He has been involved in property for over 35 years and now owns 78 letting units. He is still actively involved in buying and renovating property, and regularly flips properties for profit. Peter has written a number of successful property books. The first, An Insider's Guide to Successful Property Investing, was first published in 2000 and was one, if not the very first, book of its kind which was written for what we'd now call buy-to-let investors. On the back of its success, he was invited to be a guest writer for Property Secrets and wrote Spanish Property Secrets, French Property Secrets, and Portugal Property Secrets. He has since written a number of other successful titles dealing with UK investing including 63 Common Defects in Investment Property and How to Spot Them, the highly acclaimed The Successful Property Investors Strategy Workshop and The Property Renovator's Workshop ,in which Peter describes step-by-step how he built his own property portfolio, starting with virtually none of his own money.  ABOUT THE HOSTS  Rob Smallbone and Matt McSherry, the hosts of The Property Nomads Podcast, are on a global mission to guide your success. Those trios boldly explore texture and rhythm without the presence of drums. They include a guitar with bass and horn group, then a guitar with keys and bass group. His current trio with Misha Tsiganov on piano and Thomson Kneeland on Bass just recorded a debut release called “Circles and Lines" on Peter’s own Urban Flower Records. After successfully launching his residency-gig, early on Peter helped implement a 7-night-a-week schedule of jazz music at the Bar Next Door at La Lanterna that has featured an outstanding and diverse array of guitar and saxophone-led trios, from some of New York’s most seasoned musicians, to some of its most exciting new talent. In an effort to continue to expand the club’s offerings as its Musical Director, 3 years ago he designed and implemented an Emerging Artist Series that has featured the best college-aged musicians playing early sets that occur on 4 nights of every week.Peter has been invited to perform and guest speak at New York University, The Manhattan School of Music and at the Peabody Institute. In his presentations he discusses how he initiated jazz nights at various restaurants and bars throughout the city and how that effort culminated in the conversion of the BND from a restaurant with jazz into a notable full-on listening venue. He advises students on creative and professional ways to assimilate into the New York Jazz Club scene, particularly into the Emerging Artist Series.Peter has taught jazz guitar for over 20 years. He has a solo guitar recording “Blues for the Ineffable" is scheduled for release in 2015.Though Peter is well seasoned with his own clear and distinctive style, he remains one of the jazz guitar world’s best-kept secrets

In this central passage to Marks' gospel account, Jesus confronts the disciples with two aspects to his Messiahship. First...who am I? It was a question of identity. Then Jesus tells them of his coming suffering...that their Messiah would be rejected and crucified. Though Peter proudly proclaimed that Jesus was the Christ, he was far from understanding the true mission of the Messiah.

With a recognition of wrongdoing(sin) and a return to the Lord, forgiveness must and will follow. Though Peter’s failure is huge, his success comes through his restoration, a restoration made possible because Jesus is ultimately about forgiveness.

Yes, friends, there is no typo in the episode title. (And don't let the first few minutes of the show fool you!) Though Josh had planned, many months ago, to discuss the 1996 live-action remake of 101 Dalmatians this week, Mike pulled a fast one, a good old-fashioned bait-and-switch. So, instead of spotted dogs, the topic this week is the greatest president America has ever known: Abraham Lincoln, the subject of a new film from Steven Spielberg, appropriately titled Lincoln. Though Gabe couldn't join us for this impromptu review, Mike and Josh did welcome into the show Peter Labuza of the excellent Cinephiliacs podcast to discuss Pierre Trudeau, John Ford, Woodrow Wilson, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Were Josh, Mike, and Peter all as ecstatic about Lincoln as most critics and audiences are? You'll have to listen to find out!   Note: at one point in the show, Peter references an independent filmmaker and critic named Dan Sallitt. Though Peter said Mr. Sallitt was a former writer of LA Weekly, he meant the LA Reader.

The New Testament does not speculate about Jesus. It simply presents Him as the divine Son of God. Nor does it answer the numerous concerns about Jesus' being and person that would occupy succeeding generations. Yet, in all the discussions and arguments, there was a rock-bottom acceptance of the centrality of Scripture and the basic identity of Jesus Christ. But the so-called Age of Enlightenment (of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries) would change all that. No longer would Scripture constitute the foundation of discourse about Jesus. Instead, new methods and criteria being applied to the study of other ancient documents also would be applied to the Bible. With everything now subject to rational analysis and criticism, supernaturalism, a foundational presupposition of biblical faith, was rejected. The traditional biblical view of a human race steeped in sin and needing Divine rescue was replaced by humanism, an optimistic belief in human capacity and progress. The change of outlook was so radical and far-reaching that many thought they were witnessing the end of Christianity. Religion was considered obsolete, and reason, once the handmaid of theology, became its acknowledged mistress. The result was that the focus now shifted from the Jesus described in the Gospels, the Jesus of our salvation, to the historical Jesus, supposedly the real Jesus as He actually existed without the theological baggage superimposed by the Gospels and later Christian piety. In other words, this Jesus, whoever He was, surely was not the Savior of the world. As you reflect on these developments, consider the following: (1) The Gospel writers were very confident in the truth of what they had written (see Luke 1:1-4). What does Luke say about what he is writing? Why can we trust it? (2) One of those eyewitnesses that Luke speaks about was Peter, who himself had to confront doubters and skeptics (see 2 Pet. 1:16-21). Though Peter is speaking here about issues wider than the single one about Jesus' identity, how might we use his approach to secure ourselves against the Enlightenment onslaught we are discussing here? (3) Paul also needed to address the issue of Jesus head-on. How did he argue the case? (See 1 Cor. 1:18-27, 15:3-7.)
