We are officially 62 months old. Welcome to the latest episode of This Is Not Happening, an album of the month podcast. In Part 1, we review and Album of the Month. This month Guy brings back an artist that we first featured in early 2022, Joy Crookes. Joy is tackling the tricky 2nd album syndrome with her latest release 'Juniper'.In Part 2, we play Spin It or Bin It, we pick a theme and all pick songs that represent that theme. This month, we stick with theme of 'Joy' and ask each other to brings tracks that bring us joy and happiness. ----- Part 1 | Joy Crookes | Juniper -----In January 2022 we reviewed Joy's debut Skin. The consensus was that we loved it and it became a very important and deeply album for some of us. In terms of expectations, the bar was raised when Joy released the single 'Pass the Salt' in January of this year. So what did we get with this sophomore release? Well, a lot is the simple answer! Perhaps not a big leap stylistically but a massive long-jump forwards in terms of song writing and performance. Will that be enough for the pod ... have a listen and tell us what you think.Listen to the album ... HEREWatch some great videos ... HEREWatch a great reaction video from Jakar right ... HERERead a great interview with Joy in Glamour magazine ... HEREListen to a deeply personal and revealing interview ... HERE ----- Part 2 | Spin It or Bin It | 'Joy' -----Songs that bring us 'Joy and Happiness' sounds like a simple theme to find music for ... well, not for one of us who revels in the dark and miserable side of music. The selections are predictably brilliant!Nolan chose 'Jayou' by Jurassic 5.David chose 'Make Me Smile (Come up and see me)' by Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel.Joey chose 'Superstylin' by Groove Armada.Guy went mental and chose 'Josephine' by Chris Rea!We all chose 4 tracks as a shortlist which we combine into a belter of a 16 track playlist, listen to that bad boy HERE.We've been writing the blog for years come and have a look - https://thisisnothappening.net/

The Farm are touring again this summer and have just made their first album for 31 years (with the same-line-up). This sparky and wide-ranging conversation with Peter Hooton stops off at the following … … the advice Mark E Smith gave him when they were interviewed by Select magazine. … “Suedeheads v Trogs and Greebos”: early ‘70s tribal warfare in Bootle. … seeing Cockney Rebel, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Genesis at the Liverpool Empire. … the death of old heroes – “you imagined Bowie was always going to be there”. … backstage with the Clash in Paris and why they were the Farm's role models. … Bill Drummond's attempt to remodel them “in tracksuits with hard dogs”. … how the death of John Lennon made him start writing. … the use of All Together Now as a football anthem – from everyone to Everton to Euros 2004 to a disastrous campaign by the Labour Party - “but the Qatar World Cup was a bridge too far”. … touring with Mick Jones (“the Pied Piper”) for the Hillsborough 96 Campaign. … his school band, Breakwind - “the forerunners of Half Man Half Biscuit” – and being in the cast of Oliver!. …. his guided music tours of Liverpool and the places they visit. … and why The Farm has “omni-appeal – a band who look like they're from a street corner”. Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking! The late Steve Harley was most famous for his 1975 hit Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me), but there's much more to the story than one good single. We look at the band's early albums and Steve Harley's career around and after that single and the band's break up. As usual, Mick says their early stuff is way better than their later stuff! Our Album you Must Listen to Before You Die is “Tres Hombres”, ZZ Top's 1973 album containing the huge hit “La Grange”. Regular listeners might guess what we thought of the album, but let's not spoil the surprise! We also look at Louder magazine's recent poll where their readers voted for Genesis' 10 best-ever songs. Spoiler alert: Only 2 of the selected songs are post-Peter Gabriel's departure. For those interested, we covered Genesis in Series 2, Episode 15, and Peter Gabriel in Series 2, Episode 14 There's plenty here you may not have known. Enjoy! What is a troubadour? In its simplest definition, it's a poet who puts verse to music. The focus is on the lyrical content and the music is there to serve the storyline. In present day vernacular, the term "troubadour" is usually replaced by the catch-all category "singer-songwriter." Some troubadours are simply singers, perhaps accompanied by a guitar, interpreting another poet's songs. While other troubadours are also poets, writing and singing their own lyrics. Regardless, a troubadour's job is to connect with the listener by bringing the song's story to life. And, after it's over, to make the listener want to hear it again and again on repeat. Because each listen reveals more of the message, it can take a thousand listens to truly know the troubadour's tale. We are Team Derringer (Laura, Alton, and Paul) of Derringer Discoveries. In this episode, we are joined by songwriter Marv Conan of Brooklyn, New York. When you listen, you will hear that Marv is proud to be from Brooklyn and not just from NYC; although, for his voiceover at the end, we somehow got him to say NYC. Marv Conan recently released a song called Judy Joan & Buffy that he wrote about three troubadours who each got their respective starts in the early 1960s, two from Greenwich Village in the U.S. and one arguably from Canada. Listen to the episode to learn more about the Canada controversy. As you will hear, these three troubadours helped Marv to make it through the 1960s after Marv was drafted into the U.S. Army. Marv listened to the troubadours on repeat, back in the day of vinyl records. Recently, he decided to write the song Judy Joan & Buffy to honor these three troubadours who meant so much to him in his youth. The three troubadours are Judy Collins, Joan Baez, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Join Team Derringer as we talk with Marv and hear snippets of his song Judy Joan & Buffy sung by UK's Victoria BeeBee who toured with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel. We also talk about the three troubadours while Marv picks two songs from each to remind us why Judy, Joan, and Buffy are legendary and worthy of re-discovery. Do you want to be a Featured Artist on Derringer Discoveries? You'll need 10,000+ monthly listeners on Spotify. But if you want to be a Special Guest, like Marv Conan, all you need is a bucket of enthusiasm and a love for Derringer Discoveries (yep, you need to be a subscriber - it's free - and a regular listener!). Guy Edward Fletcher (born 24 May 1960) is an English musician, best known for his position as one of the two keyboard players in the rock band Dire Straits[1] from 1984 until the group's dissolution, and his subsequent work with Dire Straits frontman Mark Knopfler for his many solo releases. Fletcher was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Dire Straits in 2018.[2] Biography Guy Edward Fletcher was born into a musical family and is the namesake of his uncle, Guy Fletcher, who wrote several hit songs for other artists with composing partner Doug Flett.[3] His mother Barbara was a session singer; his father Ted Fletcher, an audio designer, created a line of audio equipment named after Joe Meek with whom he had worked.[4] Fletcher is also the cousin of children's television presenter Justin Fletcher.[3] Whilst learning a trade as an audio engineer at DJM Studios in London at the age of 15, Fletcher also had a succession of his own bands and learned to play keyboards, guitars, and a variety of stringed instruments. He joined and toured with Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel in 1979 and in 1981, and with Roxy Music for their Avalon world tour during 1982 and 1983. In 1983, Fletcher was recruited by Dire Straits' lead guitarist Mark Knopfler to work on the music for the films Cal and Comfort and Joy. He joined Dire Straits as a full time member in 1984, his first album with them being their most successful, 1985's Brothers in Arms, which put the band in a global spotlight, and remained with the band until their 1995 disbanding. In 1986, Fletcher co-produced Belouis Some's album Belouis Some with Gary Langan.[5] In 1996, Fletcher toured as part of Bryan Ferry's band on his Mamouna world tour. Fletcher performing in 2005 Following the disbanding of Dire Straits, Fletcher continued his association with band founder Mark Knopfler as a core member of his band after launching his solo career. In 2005, Fletcher completed a world tour promoting Knopfler's 2004 solo album, Shangri-La, and in 2006 rounded off the duets tour with Knopfler and Emmylou Harris. Fletcher co-produced and played keyboards on his Knopfler's album, Get Lucky, and was again part of his subsequent world tour in 2010.

We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year.Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Aerosmith, Banbarra, Black Sabbath, Burning Spear, Glen Campbell, Bob Dylan, Fleetwood Mac, Foghat, Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel, Emmylou Harris, The Hollies, KC & The Sunshine Band, Kiss, Fela Kuti & Afrika 70, Willie Nelson, The Outlaws, Pink FLoyd, Lou Reed, Roxy Music, Paul SImon, Patti Smith, Sparks, Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Television, The Tubes, Van Der Graaf Generator, The Walker Brothers, War, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention featuring Captain Beefheart. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Helen Jackson-BrownRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Part of the We Dig Podcasts network along with Free With This Months Issue & Pick A Disc.Twitter – https://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/wedigpusicpcast/Find our other episodes & podcasts at www.wedigpodcasts.com

Real quick: here's a move from the late 90's about a band that was big in the 70's mounting a reunion tour and having to face some demons in the process. Stephen Rea, Bill "knuckles" Nighy, Billy Connolly, Jimmy Nail and some other bastards you probably won't know.

In this episode we welcome long-time RBP contributor Ira Robbins as he celebrates the 50th anniversary of the launch of his beloved Trouser Press. Ira tells us about the musical Anglophilia that began for him with the Beatles but surged with the 1968 release of The Who Sell Out. He then recounts the beginning of his friendship with schoolmate Dave Schulps and explains how it led to a shared obsession with the British music press. The story of the 1974 launch of Anglophile fanzine Trans-Oceanic Trouser Press, in partnership with the late Karen Rose, is accompanied by quotes from a 2001 interview Ira gave to RockCritics.com. He talks about the years that followed the dropping of the "Trans-Oceanic" prefix, and about some of the contributors – more than a few female – who made Trouser Press such essential '70s reading. After playing a clip from a 1975 audio interview Ira did with Cockney Rebel's late frontman Steve Harley – who died after this episode was recorded – we turn our attention to his more recent encounter with the rather more genial Nick Lowe. Clips from this 2007 conversation prompt a general appreciation of the Jesus of Cool's career from Kippington Lodge to Little Village via Elvis Costello and Johnny Cash. After we've paid tribute to the departed Eric Carmen – with our guest disputing that (the) Raspberries were authentically "power pop" – Mark talks us out with quotes from the pieces he's most enjoyed adding to the RBP library over the preceding fortnight. Many thanks to special guest Ira Robbins. Zip It Up! The Best of Trouser Press Magazine 1974–1984 is published by Trouser Press Books and available now via trouserpressbooks.com. Pieces discussed: Ira Robbins articles, The Story behind Trouser Press, Ira interviewed on RockCritics.com, Steve Harley audio, The New Wave Washes Out, Nick Lowe audio, Eric Carmen: Rock's Rejuvenated Raspberry, World Party, Charlie Watts, Was (Not Was), Rhythm and Blues and Kiss.
British musician Steve Harley, whose glam-rock band Cockney Rebel had an enduring hit with the song Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me), has died at the age of 73. Harley said late last year he was being treated for “a nasty cancer”. Born in London in 1951, Harley worked as a trainee accountant and as journalist on local newspapers, and began his performing career at London folk clubs. He formed Cockney Rebel, which released a debut album The Human Menagerie in 1973 before foundering over creative differences. With a new line-up and rebranded as Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel, the band released the 1975 album The Best Years of Our Lives, which contained Harley's biggest hit. With its barbed lyrics – aimed at Harley's former bandmates – and infectiously catchy chorus, the Alan Parsons-produced Make Me Smile topped the United Kingdom singles chart. It went on to be covered scores of times and was used on countless soundtracks, including in the 1997 film The Full Monty and in ads for Carlsberg beer and department store Marks and Spencer. Harley also sang the title song of Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical The Phantom of the Opera alongside Sarah Brightman when it was released as a single in 1986. He was originally cast in the title role for the stage musical but was replaced by Michael Crawford. Ultravox frontman Midge Ure, who produced Harley's 1982 track I Can't Even Touch You, called him a “true ‘working musician'”. “He toured until he could tour no more, playing his songs for fans old and new,” Ure wrote on social media. “My thoughts go out to Dorothy and his family at this very sad time. Our songs live on longer than we ever can”. Harley is survived by his wife Dorothy, children Kerr and Greta and four grandchildren.

What the H? Exactly. The award-winning* Lickers discuss some of their favorite records filed under the letter H. -- In the early 1970s, legendary collaborator and self-proclaimed non-musician Brian Eno famously designed a deck of 115 cards containing elliptical imperatives to spark in the user creative connections unobtainable through regular modes of work. He called his creation "Oblique Strategies." For nearly one half of a century, countless artists and professionals across the globe have benefited from utilizing the oblique strategies technique when attempting to overcome a lull in creative output. In 2023, idiotic, introverted hobby podcasters and self-proclaimed Lightnin' Lickers Jay and Deon found themselves uninspired when contemplating the potential themes of their upcoming thirty-third episode. Together, they decided... to default back to the alphabet. Because they have a reasonably good solid grasp of the alphabet and how it works.
