Returning to Midrats this week to discuss his latest non-fiction novel is Seth W.B. Folsom, Colonel, USMC (Ret.).From the Amazon page:Nothing Here Worth Dying For tells the story of his command of Task Force Lion—a “purpose-built” combat advisor team—and his frenetic 2017 deployment to Iraq's Al Anbar Province. Charged with the daunting task of advising, assisting, and enabling the Iraqi Security Forces in their fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, Folsom and his team of Marines and sailors struggled to support their Iraqi partners in the Jazeera Operations Command while simultaneously grappling with their own leadership for their relevance on the battlefield.…As with the author's previous books, Nothing Here Worth Dying For focuses on individual Marine actions at the tactical and operational levels while also addressing regional events that contributed to the overall narrative of the U.S. war in Iraq. Folsom describes his unpopular decision to prioritize his team members and their mission to support the Iraqi army above the desires of his own military service branch. As the final operation against ISIS in western Al Anbar gained steam, he questioned the wisdom of the military leadership to which he had dedicated his entire adult life.ShowlinksNothing Here Worth Dying ForThe Highway War: A Marine Company Commander in IraqIn the Gray Area: A Marine Advisor Team at WarWhere Youth and Laughter Go: With ‘the Cutting Edge in AfghanistanSummaryThis conversation delves into the complexities of military operations in Iraq, focusing on the formation and challenges faced by Task Force Lion during the fight against ISIS. Ryan Manion has dedicated her life to supporting our nation’s military, veterans, and families of fallen heroes. She serves as the President of the Travis Manion Foundation, a non-profit born from the passing of her brother, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Al Anbar province of Iraq while drawing fire away from his wounded comrades on April 29th, 2007. Ryan shares her story of how she turned her pain and grief into purpose and used her challenges as opportunities for growth. Ryan also shares the important work her foundation does for military families.   Key Takeaways What was it like for Ryan being part of a military family and constantly moving around as a kid? You have to make sure your kids are having experiences outside of the bubble they’re going up in. What did Ryan want to be when she grew up? Ryan shares what happened when she found out her brother passed away in Iraq. Growing up, Ryan learned that you deal with mental pain through physical activity. How did the Travis Manion Foundation get started? After Travis passed, Ryan closed down her business. She didn’t feel passionate anymore. Ryan knew she wanted to serve her country, but didn’t want to join the military.  Ryan’s mother passed away from cancer. She had no symptoms and when they found it, she was given 8 months to live. Within five years, Ryan had lost her brother and her mom. When Ryan took on the role of President at the foundation, she woke up everyday feeling like she could not make mistakes and screw this up. Ryan’s therapist said she was suffering from PTSD. Ryan was frustrated. Isn’t that only for military veterans? Ryan recognizes now that she should have been in therapy a lot sooner than she was. What is the Travis Manion Foundation doing now to help veterans? “If it’s not you then, who?”   Continue On Your Journey Travismanion.org Ryanmanion.com Ryan on TwitterThe Resilient Life Podcast    JRmartinez.com J.R. on Instagram J.R. on Facebook J.R. on Twitter J.R. Helton, Jr. Award for Leadership ● 2013 Hillier (Ignite) Warrior for Warriors Award Ryan resides in Doylestown, PA with her husband and three children, Maggie Rose, Honor and Travis Brendan. Ryan continues to serve her local community by serving as a Township Supervisor since elected in 2011. While responsibilities of this position are focused on deciding issues of public safety, growth management, environment, etc., Ryan most appreciates the personal connection with those within the community she is able to directly serve.    The Interview Highlights    Ryan worked alongside her mother, Janet, at the Travis Manion Foundation for approximately 18 months before her mother passed away.   The board of directors for the foundation then appointed Ryan President of the organization.     Talk about big shoes to fill!  To help her fill her mom's shoes, Ryan hired really smart people to work alongside her.  She is very humble and doesn't take credit for the organization but gives all credit to her mom for laying a foundation for success.     The organization supports military veterans and their families.   So many people want to give and serve and honor the men and women who have served and sacrificed for our country.      The Hero's Run, which was started as a grassroots effort with approximately 500 people participating, now occurs in 90 places across the world with more than 70,000 people showing up to run and support first responders and veterans.  Robyn ran the 1st Hero's run with her daughter in the jogging stroller and remembers the passion and emotions associated with the event.      One of the reasons Ryan wrote the book, “The Knock at the Door” was to show the real side of her.   She is in the public eye a lot and appears to be so strong, not shedding tears for her brother, Travis or her the loss of her mom.   People asked her how she does it and as a result of all of the questions she wanted to tell her story and her journey.  Ryan and her co-authors, Amy and Heather wanted to show that their stories didn't end with the knock at the door.  Their stories were just beginning.      Ryan believes that setting goals to get through each day after a major life event occurs is key.  Setting small goals and thinking about today and not next year is important.  It helps to think about tomorrow but no further into the future.  When you go through a traumatic event or loss you have to set small goals at first.     Setting intentional goals is the key.  One has to be comfortable with the fact that life is not a sprint.  And it's important to remember that failure is a bruise, not a tattoo.  It's the little failures that have the power to set us back, so mindset is important.   Each day is a new day and an opportunity to be the best we can be. Tomorrow is a new day to turn the setbacks around.     When we realize that life is a series of successes and failures and that a success is just around the corner, the failures and setbacks don't hurt as bad.  The best way to honor those we've lost is to not give up but be the best version of ourselves.     The Travis Manion Foundation is an empowerment organization.  The organization helps provide opportunities for men and women who served in the military to help educate our youth on the importance of character and gives an opportunity for continued service, even without their uniforms.    Fifty-five percent of veterans say they feel disconnected to community when they return to civilian life.  Through the program, volunteers have talked to more than 350,000 students across the US.   One third of kids do not have a positive role model or, example, of good character in their lives.   The veteran volunteers can positively influence the children to become men and women of good character.     Ryan's Book Recommendations   Brothers Forever by Tom Manion   The Knock at the Door, Three Gold Star Families Bonded by Grief and Purpose by Ryan Manion, Heather Kelly, and Amy Looney Heffernan   Ryan's Favorite Quote “If not me, then who.” ~ Travis Manion    Learn more about or connect with Ryan   Website The Travis Manion Foundation  Instagram   To learn more about me, your host, Robyn Graham, click HERE.     To learn about The Brand Insider by Robyn Graham, click HERE.

I conducted this interview in 2017 but today in 2020, it's still so relevant. Now that the old podcast is down, I'm publishing again so that the great work being done is not forgotten.Former U.S. Marine Erin Kirk-Cuomo is fully aware of what her sisters in the Marine Corps are going through as they battle Marines United; a group of 30,000+ men who stored and shared thousands of photos of female Marines on Google Drive and Facebook. Some of the photos were taken without permission, some were nude photos shared without permission. In many cases, male Marines encouraged each other to find these women and rape them, even posting their duty stations, full names, addresses and phone numbers.Erin knows because it happened to her. As co-founder of Not in My Marine Corps, she's helping to lobby for federal laws that will make non-consensual photosharing illegal on a federal level, and providing support for victims. But like many before her, she's sometimes fighting an uphill battle not everyone is sure she can win.Listen on iTunesShow Notes:Links: https://www.facebook.com/NotInMyMarineCorps/https://www.notinmymarinecorps.org/Biography: Erin Kirk-Cuomo is a former United States Marine, business owner, activist, co-founder of Not In My Marine Corps, Coast Guard wife, and mother. Ms. Kirk-Cuomo is a 2002 Graduate of the University of Tampa with a Bachelor’s Degree in Biology and a minor in Chemistry, and a 2005 Graduate of the University of the Arts in Photojournalism. Upon graduating from the University of the Arts in 2005, Ms. Kirk-Cuomo enlisted in the Marine Corps as a combat photographer. After completing basic training at Parris Island, South Carolina, Ms. Kirk-Cuomo completed combat training at Camp Geiger in Jacksonville, North Carolina before attending the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Maryland where she graduated as the Distinguished Honor Graduate. Ms. Kirk-Cuomo was assigned to Camp Pendleton where she briefly worked at the base combat camera unit before being transferred to 1st Marine Division Combat Camera, deploying several times to Fallujah as a combat photographer. During her deployments in Iraq, Ms. Kirk-Cuomo was deployed with various infantry units in and around Al Anbar to include Ramadi, Al Qaim, Saqlawiyah, and Korean Village. Ms. Kirk-Cuomo was also a member of the lioness team and later a member on the very first female engagement team created in Fallujah in 2008. Upon the end of her deployment to Iraq in 2008, Ms. Kirk-Cuomo was selected as the Commandant of the Marine Corps’ photographer for General James Conway. Ms. Kirk-Cuomo traveled to Afghanistan extensively while being assigned to the staff of the Commandant including covering the beginning of the battle of Marjah in 2010.Not In My Marine Corps was created in order to provide a platform of resources for survivors of military sexual trauma, sexual assault, sexual harassment, and non-consensual photo sharing. Meanwhile, Logan is battling his own demons, especially the trauma of the ambush that his Force Recon unit suffered at an insurgent torture compound in Fallujah in 2004, which threatens to destroy everything he holds dear. The Sword of Allah refers to Khalid ibn al-Walid, the prophet Mohammad's top general.  Khalid commanded over 100 battles and never lost, making him the most undefeated general in history.  He usually fought in the front lines either as a cavalry commander or as a champion dueler.  This is the first of a two-part episode.  This part will cover Khalid's conquests of Arabia and Persia: Khalid ibn al-Walid originally fought with the Meccan Quraiysh tribe against Mohammad and the Muslims.  However, he converted after the Battle of the Trench and joined the forces of Mohammad.  His first campaign as a Muslim commander was into Ghassanid Territory to fight the Battle of Mutah, in which he led an expert retreat after the first three Muslim commanders were killed.  His second campaign involved attacking south and east in order to conquer the Arabian Peninsula.  He participated in the conquest of Mecca and in the Battle of Hunayn.  After Mohammad's death, Abu Bakr took over and formed the Rashidun Caliphate (the first of three great Islamic Empires with the other two being the Umayyad and Abbasid Dynasties).  Khalid led the campaign to reconquer all the tribes that left the Muslim confederation after Mohammad's death.  Specifically, he commanded the Muslims at the Battle of Yamama, which was fought against the "liar prophet", Musailima. After the Arabian Peninsula was retaken, Khalid was put in charge of the Rashidun invasion of Iraq (which was held by the Sassanid Persians).  Some of the famous battles of the invasion include the Battle of Chains, the Battle of Ullais, the Battle of Hira, and the Battle of Al-Anbar.  However, the most famous is the Battle of Walaja, which is known as the eastern Battle of Cannae because of Khalid's successful double envelopment of the Persians.  To this day, Khalid and Hannibal are the only ones to pull this off against a numerically superior force.  The Battle of Firaz is also important because Khalid defeated a Persian army ten times his own (in numbers).  The second part of this episode will cover Khalid's exploits in Syria.
