We invite veterans of Marine Corps Force Reconnaissance (Force Recon) to talk about their service in Vietnam. Bill Barber and Bruce “Doc” Norton both have stories about conducting deep reconnaissance, intelligence gathering, and direct action missions behind enemy lines. Unlike conventional infantry units, Force Recon operated in small teams, often just six to eight men, inserted by helicopter, boat, or foot deep into enemy-controlled territory. Their primary mission was to locate and observe North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong movements, determine enemy strength, and call in airstrikes or artillery on enemy positions. They also conducted raids, prisoner snatches, ambushes, and battle damage assessments. The nature of their work meant they frequently engaged in brutal, close-quarters combat, often fighting their way out of overwhelming enemy forces. Force Recon's training and operational methods set them apart from standard Marine infantry. They were trained in airborne operations, scuba diving, long-range patrolling, and survival in enemy territory. Their missions required a high level of stealth, endurance, and mental toughness, as they could be alone in the jungle for days, surviving on limited rations while avoiding detection. In Vietnam's dense terrain, Force Recon teams had to move silently, leaving no trace, and blend into the jungle to observe enemy troop movements. They carried suppressed weapons, radios for calling in fire support, and often had to break contact with superior enemy forces using a combination of speed, deception, and well-planned extraction procedures. Bill Barber served with the First Force Reconnaissance Company, Third Reconnaissance Battalion in I Corps Vietnam in 1965-1966. He stayed in the Marine Corps after returning from Vietnam and went on to serve in Desert Shield/Desert Storm and Panama Invasion. Bruce “Doc” Norton, a Navy Corpsman who served with Marine Force Recon in Vietnam, later became an author and historian, documenting the experiences of these elite Marines. Norton's writings provide firsthand insight into the brutal and relentless nature of Force Recon missions. His accounts describe the grueling conditions of operating in triple-canopy jungle, where visibility was limited, and the ever-present danger of ambushes, booby traps, and enemy patrols made every step a potential death trap. He wrote about the intense firefights that would erupt when a recon team was compromised, often requiring rapid extraction by helicopter under heavy enemy fire. In these situations, the ability to call in airstrikes and artillery with precision was the difference between survival and annihilation. Norton's experiences also highlight the bond among Force Recon Marines and their dedication to each other. As a corpsman, he was responsible for treating wounded Marines under fire, sometimes having to perform life-saving procedures while rounds cracked through the jungle around them. His books detail moments of heroism, loss, and the sheer physical and mental toll that these missions took on the men who conducted them. Unlike the large-scale battles of conventional Marine units, Force Recon's war was often fought in the shadows, a relentless cycle of stealth, violence, and survival. Marine Force Recon's impact on the Vietnam War was significant. Their intelligence-gathering efforts helped shape Marine operations in I Corps, allowing commanders to anticipate enemy movements and strike before the NVA or Viet Cong could. Their direct action missions disrupted enemy logistics, eliminated key targets, and kept pressure on enemy forces in areas where large Marine units could not operate effectively. Despite their small numbers, Force Recon Marines were a force multiplier, striking fear into the enemy and providing invaluable battlefield intelligence. https://virusukthrash.bandcamp.com Welcome to this week's episode where we dive deep into the world of punk, thrash, and heavy metal! Today, we're spotlighting Virus, one of the true pioneers of the U.K. thrash metal scene of the 1980s. Known for their old-school thrash—played raw, fast, and unapologetic—Virus set the standard for how thrash should be done.Formed in 1986 by Keith "Henry Heston" Hazelden and Terry "Tez" Kaylor of Criminal Damage, Virus quickly made a name for themselves with their DIY ethos and blistering sound. Early member John D. Hess joined during their first year, with Coke Finlay completing the lineup in 1987. Their self-funded debut Pray for War paved the way, but it was their second album, Force Recon, that cemented their place in the thrash pantheon.Virus shared stages with legends like Megadeth, Celtic Frost, and Napalm Death, becoming known as the “bad boys of thrash metal” thanks to their wild, chaotic gigs. The band split in 1990 but reformed in 2009 under Coke Finlay's leadership, releasing two EPs and a string of ferocious live performances.2020 marked their triumphant return with Evilution Apocalypse, their first full-length album in 30 years. The lead single, mixed by the legendary Randy Burns, captures the spirit of old-school thrash while pushing their sound into new territory.Today, Virus continues to shred lead by Coke Finlay on vocals and lead guitar. This is a band that's stayed true to its roots while evolving to keep the thrash flame burning bright.Get ready for a journey through their storied career, from the mosh pits of the 80s to the stage-shaking anthems of today. This is Virus: thrash, the way it should be played.

One major trait for many great leaders is the ability to not just persevere through hard times, but create an opportunity during challenging times. Eric Kapitulik really, really knows something about that. A graduate of the United States Naval Academy, where he was a four year varsity player in D1 Lacrosse, he then went on to serve in the United States Marine Corps, where he served as a Platoon Commander in the elite 1st Force Reconnaissance Division. In 1999 he suffered a tremendous tragedy, when during a routine training exercise his squad's helicopter crashed where six of his fellow Marines perished. After recovering both physically and emotionally from the crash, Eric focused solely on the well being of his fallen comrades families: In an effort to raise money for a college scholarship fund set up for the children of his deceased teammates, Eric completed eight Ironman Triathlons, The Canadian Death Race Ultra Marathon, The Eco Challenge, and The American Birkebeiner Ski Marathon, and as a side quest, climbed five of the Seven Summits. On top of all this Eric enrolled in the University of Chicago after he left the Marines, and graduated with his MBA in 2005. Shortly after that in 2008 he founded The Program. The Program pulls from his experience in the Marines, and aims to provide organizations with the best personal, leadership, and culture development services worldwide. We caught up with Eric to talk about his philosophy on developing a high performing team through grit, communication, and setting standards. We also chatted about his new book The Program: Lessons from Elite Military Units for Creating and Sustaining High Performance Leaders and Teams, which details the lessons learned from his time in the Marines and as an entrepreneur. This is another episode you're not going to want to miss, so with that…let's bring it in!

In Episode 134 I sit down with Jay Morrison (JayMo). Jay's life has been an intense journey starting with an extremely traumatic childhood, followed by a military career that took him to the pinnacle of special operations inside of Force Recon, and finally as a firefighter, which is still his current profession. Jay's path exposed him to countless traumatic incidents which we really delve into. After years of compounding traumatic experiences, Jay found himself in that dark place that veterans often do. He started to struggle with depressive thoughts and suicidal ideations and sought a variety of treatments. It's important for strong men like Jay to share their story of recovery because honesty and being vulnerable about these issues will inevitably help someone else that is currently stuck inside of this toxic cycle. Today we hear the Combat Story of Joe McNamara, a former Marine Corps officer who experienced a unique kind of violence from his time on campus at Virginia Tech during the horrific 2007 shooting to leading Marines in combat in Afghanistan. After leaving the service, Joe founded a leadership development company called Impact USA that trained both elite athletes and private sector leaders. Impact was recently acquired by Mike Sarraille's Talent War Group, where Joe is now a partner and Chief Revenue Officer. Many will recall a fantastic interview with Mike (episode 70 https://youtu.be/v4TPJtkZrek), the former enlisted Marine who went on to Force Recon then served as an officer in SEALs and, eventually, Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU). The fact that someone like Mike who went through that crucible of leadership experiences went on to acquire Impact says a lot about what Joe does to develop leaders. This episode dives between combat experiences and the leadership lessons we can apply to our lives, from the foxhole to athletics to the office. In fact, Joe answers two questions I've always had: how do you create a sense of shared adversity in a corporate setting and how do you find time to train corporate leaders without taking them off operations for a full six to 12 months the way the military does it.I hope you enjoy this Combat Story with a battle hardened Marine Corps officer and some of the tangible leadership lessons we can all apply from his experiences as much as I did.Find Joe Online: - LinkedIN https://www.linkedin.com/in/mcnamara1/- Instagram @joe_mcnamara_ https://www.instagram.com/joe_mcnamara_- Impact Leadership https://www.impactthepace.com/ Find Ryan Online: - Ryan's Linktree https://linktr.ee/combatstory- Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/combatstory/- Instagram @combatstory https://www.instagram.com/combatstory- Facebook @combatstoryofficial https://fb.me/combatstoryofficial- Send us messages at https://m.me/combatstoryofficial- Learn more about Ryan www.combatstory.com/aboutus- Intro Song: Sport Rock from Audio JungleShow Notes: 0:00 - Intro 0:35 - About our sponsor, Let's Get Checked 1:57 - Guest Introduction (Joe McNamara) 3:46 - Interview begins 5:13 - Childhood and path to the military 10:04 - Support for Combat Story brought to you by Manscaped 11:24 - Somber stories of courage and leadership from the school shooting at Virginia Tech 22:08 - When certain experiences harden you emotionally25:10 - The most impactful leadership advice from Marine Corps mentors 30:40 - Training and what it was like in Afghanistan with insane amount of IEDs 40:31 - Being in a leadership role at 20-21 years old and the most important attribute in leadership 44:12 - Combat Story - What it is like as infantry men when your vehicle gets hit by massive IED 53:47 - Combat Story - First time someone in his platoon was hit while on foot 1:00:24 - What an "XO" is in the military and what the role entails 1:04:24 - Combat Story - How leadership planning and drills show up after a mass casualty event1:14:29 - Formative Company Command time at Paris Island 1:24:55 - Where the idea for Impact Leadership came from 1:28:10 - Replicating shared adversity and military training in corporate sector1:36:03 - The biggest challenges seen in corporate leadership 1:39:55 - What did you carry into combat?1:40:39 - Would you do it again? 1:43:26 - Listener comments and shout outs

In this episode, Tyler and Jose continue their discourse involving the events taking place in Afghanistan. This forum had Veterans and active-duty members spanning from the '70s to the present. We want to thank all the participants for joining and sharing their wisdom involving this historical moment. We would also like to thank Chase Smoak for taking the initiative in pulling Americans and interpreters out of Afghanistan; in his words, "It's the least we could do for them since they were there with us fighting." Right now, he is on a mission to pull more Americans out; if there is anyone with real-time information, resources, or political pull, please get in touch with us @03XXSeries on Instagram or find Chase on FB or Instagram.
