#86: My guest today is Alexander Brandon, a game audio designer based out of Seattle, Washington. He has had an incredibly diverse and impactful career, starting off in the early ages of game audio working on projects like Unreal, Thief, and Deus Ex. He also contributed to projects such as Skyrim, Job Simulator, and so so many others. In this episode, we dive deep into Alexander's initial start in game audio, and how he got started in the field before it was considered “cool”, his views on starting and building a business as an artist, how he transitioned from working on games to eventually leading teams, and so much more. “The constant fighting between prisoners seems to be getting worse.” The game that gave its name to an industry-changing engine (or was it the engine that gave the game its name?): Unreal. Before it spun off into mainly multiplayer arenas, Unreal started life as another echelon-defining PC fps. Leon, Chris O'Regan and Jon - along with community contributions - remember the game's undeniable late 90s 'wow' factor (for those who had a PC capable of running it), as well as seeing how a 2023 replay treats the gameplay. http://media.blubrry.com/caneandrinse/caneandrinse.com/podcast/cane_and_rinse_issue_565.mp3 Music featured in this issue:1. We had a great time at VGMTogether presenting our talk on game audio logging and the dedicated communities around the world that have spent years archiving music as accurately as possible. It's a commonly overlooked topic that nevertheless supports a lot of activities in the game music scene. You may have heard it referred to as "VGM ripping"; logging is the process of accessing, capturing, organizing and ultimately archiving game music in more accessible ways. There are a few ways that game music is stored in data, and a few ways that game music is captured for easier access. It's a time-consuming but rewarding process that requires some computer skills and a decent amount of patience. In addition to the tracklist we've included a number of other resources: links to some of our past shows with a focus on logging and preservation, links to some of the more prominent game and computer music archives, and some other relevant talks. To all of those involved in VGM logging including our good friends ValleyBell and ctr, as well as the many folks we didn't mention, we thank you for all of your hard work and for everything you've done for the VGM community over the years. We did our best to make our show as enjoyable for regular listeners, but we have also included our presentation slides which help enhance the experience. Click through the presentation below to see the visual aids and video examples we used during our talk. You sent in 31 questions about gaming, ranging from demo discs to how games are reviewed, and we answered them! This week, we pause for breath, and just enjoy a Q&A with our listeners. Regular service resumes next week. It's a very straightforward episode, but it covers a wide range of subjects, even if it's about 30 minutes longer than it should be. This week's music is from the Deus Ex soundtrack by Alexander Brandon, Dan Gardopée and Michiel van den Bos.
Ve skladatelském portfoliu má Deus Ex a Unreal, Alexander Brandon však překvapuje i v jiných rolích. Jarda Konáš vám to všechno řekne! Skládá, produkuje, dabuje, šéfuje vlastní produkční společnosti a kromě toho stíhá i vydávat svou vlastní hudbu, která velmi zajímavým způsobem kombinuje tradiční progrockový žánr s moderní technikou užívanou herními skladateli. Co vám budeme povídat, v podcastu bude co poslouchat! Podívejte se na https://www.retronation.cz na další skvělé výlety do herních světů!
