“If you're searching for these aesthetic goals, yes, you may achieve them in the short term, or you may not, genetics are strong. But with that, it's like a fight that you're just going to keep fighting and keep fighting and eventually lose. It can turn into this really big obsession with this outward goal that you can easily shift into an inward goal and feel so much more fulfilled.” - Allison Crawford In this episode, Katy welcomes Allison Crawford, also known as @not.your.mamas.body.image on Instagram. She's also a certified personal trainer, a certified group fitness instructor, and a yoga teacher. Through her content and work, Allison wants to help others shift their mindset when it comes to body acceptance. This includes doing away with “aesthetic” goals, changing the language we use when talking about our bodies and other people's bodies, and inviting healthier and more meaningful conversations about body image. [00:01 - 10:15] Shifting the Focus from Fitness to Body Image Moving away from a restrictive diet, bad eating habits, and hardcore exercise Having more body awareness instead of defining health by the numbers [10:16 - 16:28] The Non-Diet Space in Social Media Allison talks about the story behind her Instagram account Breaking the diet mentality that's been passed down in families Body image feels more personal [16:29 - 31:22] Aesthetic Goals Can Lead You Down the Wrong Path Being a non-diet trainer and unpacking the real reasons why people want to lose weight Examining the obsession with aesthetic goals for weight loss and aging The important things we miss out on because we're so worried about how we look Allison on slowing down and bringing balance and peace in life with yoga [31:23 - 38:15] Navigating Diet Culture as a Mom Working on the language we use when talking about bodies, especially in front of children Finding teachable moments Cultivating a home filled with awareness and acceptance [38:16 - 49:09] Wrapping up! I'm so excited to have my Goddess SiStar Allison Rozzel as a guest on today's Spiritual Love Podcast episode. We're talking about self love, and why it's a must for Black Women and Women of Color like us. More about Allison: Allison is originally from Chattanooga, TN and now resides in Atlanta, GA. She is the mother of one amazing son who has left the nest! She is the daughter of two teachers. With both her mom and dad being teachers, she said that she would never become a teacher. But Spirit had other plans. Allison is an Energy Wellness & Empowerment Coach for BIWOC 40 and older. She is a certified Reiki Master Teacher/Healer, intuitive oracle card reader and podcast host. As a coach she is essentially following in the footsteps of her parents by being a teacher but in her own spiritually, creative way! Her spiritual path began in 2014 when her son graduated from high school and she was left with the thought of, "okay my son is grown, now what do I do with my life?" She began blogging about her journey as an empty nester on a spiritual journey to find herself. From there she received and accepted her calling to become a coach and healer. Allison is passionate about seeing black women becoming whole and healed by gaining knowledge of self, creating and implementing spiritual practices/rituals, and being black out loud gracefully and unapologetically! How to make social media videos that people want to watch with Allison Puryear: Show NotesPsychologists and therapists need an online presence and a great way of communicating what we do is through video. It is not always easy to feel confident on video on social media. Allison Puryear shows us how we can entertain and educate in our videos. Allison Puryear is a therapist specialising in eating disorders and anxiety in the US who also owns a practice building community called the Abundance party. As you can tell from the name of her community Allison doesn't create generic, boring content to promote her practice building business or her therapy services. She is a master at being authentic and, frankly, interesting online and I am really pleased that she is here to talk to us today about how you can use video, in an exciting way, to stand out on social media. The highlights: Allison tells us about what she does and why, stemming from her own experiences with eating disorders and private practice 01:15 I explain that my passion for putting content out there is because I know how difficult it is to access mental health services 03:16 Allison takes us through the reasons why it is a good idea for us to make video for social media 04:10 Allison talks about why we should vet our reasons if we are reluctant to make videos 07:05 Allison takes us through the common mistakes, beginning with getting hung up on our appearance 10:04 Allison talks about the mistakes of not preparing enough or overpreparing 12:41 We discuss live videos and the danger of over-editing 14:00 Allison talks about the mistaken belief that we need fancy tech to make videos, and how we put things in the way because we are afraid of starting 16:30 Allison tells us that the only thing a good video needs to have is great content, and what makes great content 18:56 We discuss needing to serve what the client sees as the problem, and how you have to market to the real life situation rather than the psychological formulation 20:14 Allison gives us her top tips for making video interesting to look at, beginning with dialling up your energy 23:47 We talk about how exposure to yourself on video can help 26:21 Allison suggests blocking your view of your face if that's a hang up, as it's about what we're saying, not what we look like 29:08 Allison talks about her tips for batch recording, and why it can reduce the pressure 30:19 Allison gives advice for improving reach and encouraging engagement 33:29 Links to find Allison: Allison's Therapy services: https://www.allisonpuryear.com/ (https://www.allisonpuryear.com/) Abundance party: https://www.abundanceparty.com/ (https://www.abundanceparty.com/) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/abundancepracticebuilding Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abundance_practice_building/ ______________________ Do you sometimes wake up at 2 am worried that you've made a terrible error that will bring professional ruin upon you and disgrace your family? I'm laughing now but when I first set up in private practice I was completely terrified that I had “missed” something big when setting up insurance or data protection. Even now, three years in, I sometimes catch myself wondering if I have really covered all the bases. It is hard, no impossible, to think creatively and have the impact you should be having in your practice if you aren't confident that you have a secure business. BUT it can be overwhelming to figure out exactly what you need to prioritise before those clients start coming in. I've created a free checklist (plus resources list) to take the thinking out of it. Allison De Paoli explains how to contain benefit spending and care for employees! When I was first introduced to Allison De Paoli, I wondered how you, our listeners and readers, would feel about her topic: how to control employer spending on healthcare benefits for their employees. I urge you to listen in before you judge whether this is really relevant to you. In fact, this is as much about you and your needs as it is about those of your company's CEO, employee benefits officer or budget director. Maybe you and your employer can find hidden costs that are driving benefits expenses up? I guarantee you, we can all gain from what Allison has to say. Taking care of those who make your company run If you are an executive worried about your rising healthcare benefits costs (often among the top three of your expenses), you must listen to this podcast and think about what you are doing. The best employers inherently know that taking care of their employees means that their employees will take care of their company's customers. Understandably, then, the goal is to offer a benefits plan that takes care of employees but doesn’t break the bank. This will produce higher job satisfaction, better morale, more employee engagement and better staff retention. The problem is that most employers don’t know how to accomplish this—or even that it is possible! Learn from an expert For years, Allison De Paoli has been shocking employers who were sure that there was little they could do to control their healthcare spending. As she shares in our podcast, Allison sweeps in and helps you “see, feel and think” about your healthcare spending in completely new ways, which is why we knew she was perfect for an On the Brink with Andi Simon podcast. (Maybe she's an anthropologist like us and doesn't know it?) She gets it and so will you! Allison's #1 goal: helping employers gain control of their healthcare spending Specifically, this means deriving the maximum value from every dollar spent and allowing those saved dollars to grow the business and the bottom line, all while delivering a world-class benefits program to employees. According to Allison, understanding how to drive savings while delivering top-quality benefits can be intimidating for most health insurance professionals. Few know how to get under the hood and tinker around with the components to make the plan work better. Allison does. And she's here today to tell us how. Here are some of the things Allison and I discussed: How supply chain management translates into healthcare and employee benefits What to focus on with healthcare: manage the claims, not the administrative How to shift your plan to focus on outcomes Healthcare management: how to find hidden cost drivers How to make a healthcare plan predictable and repeatable How to use your plan to drive employee engagement Allison's advice and proposals: Fee Transparency for everyone: Who gets paid what, and when. This includes your benefits advisor, hospitals, imaging centers, labs and every other component of the healthcare system supply chain. Alignment of the incentives for good care: There shouldn’t be competing interests between hospitals, doctors, pharmacies, all other providers of care and yes, benefits advisors. Access to quality care and understanding what quality care is: Make sure your employee gets it! Not only is providing quality care the right thing to do, it will save your plan a significant amount of money. This week, we had an incredible interview with eco-entrepreneur, owner of Melody Productions, Director of the Food Heals Documentary, and co-host on The Food Heals Podcast, Allison Melody. Recently, both Devon and I were on her podcast for episode 199: The Secrets to Revolutionizing Your Workouts and Losing Weight Naturally and so we invited Allison to be on Open Sky Fitness to share her own incredible health journey. Click here for the entire show notes! Please leave us a review at http://openskyfitness.com/review Join our Open Sky Fitness Podcast Facebook Group! Early sign up for our next 7 Day Paleo Reset It took me 10 years to discover what worked for me and my health. This was not an overnight change; it was a lifestyle change and it took time. I slowly made discoveries about my health and I'm still making discoveries even today. I'm still ebbing, flowing, and changing when things aren't working for me. Some things work for a while but then I have to shift as I age and the food and production formulations like deodorant are changing." - Allison Melody Discover What Health Journey Is Best For You "If we deal with the past and we send love to our inner child or younger self, we can heal the present by healing the past. However, we're never done fully healing ourselves; there's always something else that we can work on." - Allison Melody In this episode, you will hear us cover the following topics with Allison: Allison's origin story, her parents' illnesses, and why she started a plant-based diet. The moment she discovered holistic health and natural medicine. How you can get started on improving your health The 7 Stages of Grief we go through and how we can emotionally heal ourselves. What it means to have a gluten sensitivity vs. being Celiac. What spiritual psychology is and how it can help you heal your mind and work through childhood issues. Rob and Devon's own experiences with therapy and emotionally healing themselves. How to eat healthy without feeling hungry nor depriving yourself of food you enjoy. How To Become A Healthier You "To start focusing on better health, ask yourself, 'What is the most present thing in my life right now that I need to work on?' and start there. Where are you now in your health and where can you go tomorrow?" - Allison Melody We asked Allison what her top advice was on how to starting living a healthier lifestyle. She advised to begin by focusing on just one thing at a time instead of everything at once and gave a list of what you can begin focusing on today depending on what you're leaning towards the most: Don't take on too much at once, but focus on one thing at a time. Choose what to focus on based on what is most present in your life now whether that's physical weight or emotional weight. Focus on what foods are potentially harming your health such as gluten, processed foods, and sugar. Don't take away your favorite foods or activities but add vegetables or a 20-minute walk. Gradually begin to add more fitness to your life by walking more or going to the gym a couple of times a week. Take a closer look at the relationships in your life because maybe you need to let go of a toxic friend or build a stronger bond with someone else. Clear your mind through journaling, meditation, and focus on what really needs your attention. About Allison Melody "I am on a mission to awaken people to the fact that a healing miracle is possible. That we can heal our bodies if we give it what it needs to heal." - Allison Melody The topics she addresses through her work are powerful and heart-centered and focus on Holistic Health, Social Justice, Human Rights and Animal Rights. They reflect her passion for creating positive change in people and the communities they serve. At the age of 26, Allison endured the devastating loss of both her parents to cancer after long and challenging battles. Witnessing her mother and father suffer so intensely and needlessly from a cure that brought more pain than the disease, Allison soon dedicated her life to finding a better way to heal. She watched in disbelief as doctors prescribed drug after drug, observed her parents’ hair fall out, their rapidly aging faces, and their exceedingly diminishing vitality. The tragedy instilled in her an unwavering passion for nutritional medicine and propelled her into the world of holistic health and alternative healing. Allison’s firm commitment to natural health is further evidenced by her achievement of a Masters Degree in Spiritual Psychology. SAVE YOUR SPOT FOR THE 8 WEEK SKY FIT CHALLENGE IN JULY!
