It's been ten years since the massacre at Sandy Hook elementary where 20 children and 6 adults were murdered in an act of public gun violence. While we've got your attention in this flurry of ten year anniversary media reports, Sandy Hook parent survivor Nelba Márquez-Greene wants you to know what survival really looks like. This is a re-release of the first episode of season two. On this week's show, Nelba and I discuss what it's like to live such a public grief, and what it means to find joy - and hope - in an often violent world. In this episode we cover: Supporting each other: the difference between an “inside the house” friend and an “on the porch” friend. Why no single form of advocacy for survivors is right for all survivors What's missing from our ideas about “resilience” Where your money goes when you donate funds in the wake of a tragedy The importance of telling your own story in the ways you want to tell it (no matter who demands a soundbite) What to do when the next act of gun violence happens Notable quotes: “My son was eight when his sister was murdered. He has every reason to not hope. In this country, boys who look like him are murdered with impunity more often than we report. And my son still has hope. And that gives me great hope when I can't find it.” - Nelba Márquez-Greene “What's the aim of a media outlet, or a news outlet, when they tell a specific (often traumatic) story? Like, yes, they want clicks & advertising, but they need emotional impact to get those clicks. Do you know what has emotional impact? The f*cking truth.” - Megan Devine About our guest: Nelba Márquez-Greene is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist specializing in grief, loss, trauma and their impact on individuals and systems. What her official bio doesn't say is that her child was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary. In 2018, she was profiled as one of “100 Women of Color” and a YWCA (CT) Women's Leadership Award recipient. She was featured in People Magazine's October 2019 issue as one of Ten Women Changing the World and also recognized by Chelsea Clinton and Hillary Clinton in their Book of Gutsy Women. Find Nelba at thisgrievinglife.com Follow her on Instagram and Facebook @anagraceproject Follow her on Twitter at @Nelba_MG and @anagraceproject Additional resources There are many organizations fighting to end gun violence. Here are just a few: Moms Demand Action, Change the Ref, and Brady United. As Nelba suggested, if you want to support survivors of gun violence, find ways to support survivors in underserved communities, especially if their tragedy didn't make the national news. Chelsea Clinton, mother of three, is an expert when it comes to introducing a new baby to the family, and this humorous book is all about what to expect. Her latest book Welcome to the Big Kids Club teaches older siblings why your baby cries, how to carry them, and more! She has authored several children's books including the She Persisted series on trailblazing women around the world, which was fodder for the book she co-authored with her mother Former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Gutsy Women, and the docuseries Gutsy on Apple TV. Kanika Chadda Gupta sat down with her to discuss her books, the challenges and joys of being a mother of three, and how she galvanizes toddlers, tweens, teens and beyond to make an impact in their communities and fight for global issues like world hunger, access to education, the water crisis, saving endangered species, and climate change. “I'm for survivors surviving.” - Nelba Márquez-Greene Nelba Márquez-Greene is a marriage and family therapist, and she's an advocate for survivors of tragedy. What her offical bio doesn't say is that her child was murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary. Each time there's a new act of public gun violence, the media erupts with sound bites and headlines: survivors of past acts of violence tell us what the newest survivors are thinking and feeling. Not only do those interviews come at a cost, they don't tell the whole story of what it's like to live on after people you love have been killed by gunfire. On this week's show, Nelba and I discuss what it's like to live such a public grief, and what it means to find joy - and hope - in an often violent world. In this episode we cover: Supporting each other: the difference between an “inside the house” friend and an “on the porch” friend. Here's what they cover: Ten of the top U.S. universities have endowments worth more than $200 billion even as President Biden plans to cancel up to $20,000 of student loan debt for many Americans. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis described retiring Dr. Anthony Fauci as an “elf” and called for him to be chucked “across the Potomac” River. House Republicans were blocked Wednesday from criticizing President Biden's student loan forgiveness plan by Facebook, saying such posts violate community standards, according to officials. Dems on the House Select Subcommittee on the Coronavirus Crisis released a report Wednesday alleging the Trump administration pressured health officials to approve unproven COVID-19 treatments and rush authorization of vaccines. First Lady Jill Biden has tested positive for COVID-19 once again in a rebound case. Hillary Clinton and her daughter, Chelsea Clinton, have landed an Apple TV docuseries based on their previously-released book titled "Gutsy Women."

But with that, it's like a fight that you're just going to keep fighting and keep fighting and eventually lose. As we start the new year, we’re pleased to share the episode named by Second Act Stories listeners as the “Best of 2020.” Fraidy Reiss’ story is among the most inspiring tales we’ve profiled on the Second Act Stories podcast. Part of the Orthodox Jewish community in Brooklyn, New York, Fraidy was married at the age of 19. It was an arranged marriage to a man she barely knew. He demonstrated a violent streak within a week of the wedding punching his fist through a wall and threatened to kill her. Over the next twelve years, she feared for her own life on a daily basis. But she eventually she found a way to get a college education, achieve financial independence, divorce her husband and escape with the custody of her two daughters. Today, she is the Founder and Executive Director of Unchained At Last, the only organization in the United States dedicated to ending forced and child marriage through direct services and advocacy. Want to learn more about Fraidy Reiss and Unchained At Last? Check out her TED Talk on YouTube or visit the Unchained At Last website. Fraidy is also featured in Bruce Feiler’s book “Life Is In The Transitions” (which is how we first heard of her) and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s “The Book of Gutsy Women.”

Fraidy Reiss' story is among the most inspiring tales we’ve ever profiled on the Second Act Stories podcast. Check out her TED Talk on YouTube and visit the Unchained At Last website. Fraidy is also featured in Bruce Feiler's book "Life Is In The Transitions" (which is how we first heard of her) and Hillary and Chelsea Clinton’s "The Book of Gutsy Women."
By now it’s an all-too-familiar phenomenon: A woman who dares to defy stereotypes or step out of her “place” gets called “shrill,” “bossy,” “ambitious,” or worse. But more often than not, those are the women who get the job done. Hillary talks to feminist activist Gloria Steinem about her life and career, and sits down with pediatrician Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha, who spoke out about the Flint Water Crisis. With each of these gutsy women, she asks what -- or who -- made them think they could make a difference, and how they overcame the obstacles they faced along the way. Gloria Steinem is a feminist journalist and activist, best known as a pioneer of the women’s rights movement in the 1970s. She began her career in 1962 with groundbreaking pieces about contraception and about her experience going undercover as a Playboy Bunny. Later, she founded Ms. Magazine and was a major figure in the fight for the Equal Rights Amendment. Her memoir, My Life on the Road, was recently turned into a film called The Glorias starring Julianne Moore and Alicia Vikander. Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha is a pediatrician and public health advocate who in 2014 helped expose toxic levels of lead in the water in Flint, Michigan. Her book, What the Eyes Don’t See: A Story of Crisis, Resistance, and Hope in an American City, recounts her experience of the crisis. A full transcript is here.

Alice Min Soo Chun is an architect who is used to overseeing large-scale projects, but her greatest design is an item that weighs just over two ounces. After the catastrophic 2010 earthquake that hit Haiti, the Columbia University professor set out to invent something that could be used to help the victims who were left in the dark. The effort eventually culminated with the launch of Solight Design, a New York-based startup known for its origami-inspired "SolarPuff" lantern. Made out of a sturdy, waterproof cloth that folds flat and pops open to emit light from its solar-powered LEDs, SolarPuffs have be sent around the globe to aid impoverished areas. Solight officially took off in 2015 with a KickStarter program that yielded unprecedented results. Alice also went on to win numerous awards including the US Patent Award for Humanity and her products have been exhibited at MOMA, the Modern Museum of Art in New York City. She is also featured in "The Book of Gutsy Women" by Hillary Clinton. And she's still inventing! With the current pandemic still disrupting everyday life, Alice is hard at work devising a new type of mask that can help prevent the spread of Covid-19.

Former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and daughter Chelsea Clinton feel great (but a little apprehensive) about being Conan O’Brien’s friends. Hillary and Chelsea sit down with Conan to discuss the stories that inspired them to co-write The Book of Gutsy Women, Chelsea’s teenage years in the White House, unusual Halloween costumes, the incredible pace of technology, and why we should never quit betting on optimism. Plus, Conan spins an alternate history of Idaho in response to a listener’s voicemail. Got a question for Conan? Call our voicemail: (323) 451-2821.
THE BOOK OF GUTSY WOMEN: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience is the first book that Secretary Clinton and Chelsea have written together, and they are excited to welcome readers into a conversation they began having when Chelsea was a little girl. Join them as they discuss the women throughout history who have had the courage to stand up to the status quo, ask hard questions, and get the job done. Inspired by women whose tenacity blazed the trail, the two global leaders lay out a vision for how these stories of persistence can galvanize women and men, boys and girls around the world. There’s Greta Thunberg, a 16-year-old climate activist whose Asperger’s syndrome has shaped her advocacy. Civil rights activist Dorothy Height, LGBTQ trailblazer Edie Windsor, and swimmer Diana Nyad, who each kept pushing forward, no matter what. Writers like Rachel Carson and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, historian Mary Beard, who used wit to open doors that were once closed, and activists like Harriet Tubman and Malala Yousafzai, who looked fear in the face and persevered. And so many more. This groundbreaking celebration of gutsiness is a call to action – not just for women, but for all of us, especially now. The authors write, “Ensuring the rights, opportunities, and full participation of women and girls remains a big piece of unfinished business of the twenty-first century. Finishing it is going to take all of us standing shoulder to shoulder, across the generations, across genders. This is not a moment for anyone to leave the fight, or sit on the sidelines waiting for the perfect moment to join.” The event took place at the Omni New Haven Hotel at Yale on October 29, 2019. Are you owning your individuality? Hillary and Chelsea Clinton talk to Viv Groskop about our narrow notions of what female speech and power should be - and how they must be expanded. They discuss The Book of Gutsy Women (co-authored by the Clintons), plus pant suits, press bullying, Greta Thunberg and Hillary's very first public speaking "trial by fire".
This week we're doing a mini book report! We each read a few sections of Hillary and Chelsea Clinton's new book and we're here to tell you what we learned.
Pete doesn't mind the Greens playing politics with Australia's bushfires - it's just that they're wrong. Heroes and villains this week includes the Geelong council that won't declare a climate emergency, the beer company telling everyone Epstein didn't kill himself, Q&A cancelling itself and Hillary Clinton's Book of Gutsy Women not including Thatcher. We talk to comedian, podcaster and YouTuber Bridget Phetasy about whether it's time to cancel Obama, woke culture and Beto O'Rourke withdrawing his campaign (15:00-32:47). James gets his sheriff badge out to challenge Member for Wentworth Dave Sharma MP on Brexit and whether Malcom Turnbull's Breitbart subscription still comes to the electoral office (32:47-47:47) before another round of Hey What Did We Miss? where Pat's behaviour is simply out of control. There will be repercussions (47:47-57:35). At the end of the show we debut our new segment Pete's Tweet which sees us directly contact a guest we've been circling for a while, talk about Micky Mouse and Albus Dumbledore being included among 11,000 climate scientists demanding a climate emergency, share the story of the guy who dumped his girlfriend for not panicking enough about climate change and James has an unusual solution and frankly alarming solution to Pete's cricket team's horrendous start this season.
Steve and the team speculate on what could happen if Ruth Bader Ginsburg cannot finish the current presidential term, and Steve picks apart Hillary Clinton’s argument that Margaret Thatcher wasn’t a sufficiently “gutsy” woman. Then, Aaron combines his three questions with Theology Thursday. Finally, Mike Woody joins the program to talk movies and watch trailers for the entire second hour. Learn more about your ad choices. In this UK-exclusive event, introduced by Southbank Centre Chief Executive, Elaine Bedell, the pair discuss how and why they chose to write this book. In this podcast recorded from their talk you’ll hear the stories of some of the women featured in The Book of Gutsy Women, including Juliette Gordon Low, founder of Girl Scouts of the USA, young Ruby Nell Bridges Hall, the first African-American child to desegregate an all-white Elementary School in Louisiana. The Clintons also discuss the challenges that women continue to face today, particularly in politics.
The former US secretary of state, senator and First Lady, is joined by her daughter Chelsea to share with Fearne stories of their favourite females from across the world - all taken from their new book, Gutsy Women.
Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton were at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre in Los Angeles on November 6, 2019 hosted by Book Soup as part of their book tour for The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience. Bridget casually recorded some snippets on her iphone and was moved to share them her. She sought and received permission to share them in honor of these two Superhero of Love authors who celebrate over 100 Gutsy Women who also happen to be Superheroes of Love. Brilliant interviewer Maria Shriver led the conversation through heart territories that some had never heard about before, and led to Hillary giving some hints about another possible presidential run. Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton and Chelsea Clinton visited the National Constitution Center last week to unveil their new book The Book of Gutsy Women: Favorite Stories of Courage and Resilience. They shared stories of the gutsy women profiled in their book – some close to them, including Chelsea’s grandmothers; some historic figures like Claudette Colvin and Frances Perkins; and some modern day trailblazers like Greta Thurnberg, Abby Wombach, and the students of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. They also detailed the groundbreaking work done by these women in areas including equal pay, the Equal Rights Amendment, athletics, gun policy reform, and more. Sec. Clinton also explains why she thinks we are in a constitutional crisis and shares her thoughts on the current impeachment inquiry.
