In 2002, the French Colombian politician Ingrid Betancourt became perhaps one of the best-known hostages in the world when she was kidnapped and held for over six years, deep in the Colombian jungle, by the Farc. Watching Ingrid's emotional release on TV in 2008, was a young Canadian journalist called Amanda Lindhout. A month later she herself was taken hostage at gun-point, on a work trip to Somalia. For the 460 days of Amanda's captivity, she thought about Ingrid nearly every day, inspired by the thought that she too could one day end her ordeal. This is the first time they have spoken to each other.

My friend Mary Johnson of mary@bridgeworkscoaching.ca recently had the privilege of introducing Amanda Lindhout at a speaker series presentation during the Certified Professional Accountants Elevate celebrations. I was so impressed with Mary’s story of Amanda’s message that I asked Mary if I could use her story in this newsletter. I’ll let Mary take it from here…
How do we understand those who are different from ourselves, particularly when these are people we may have never met? Maine authors of both fiction and non-fiction can help us bridge cultural divides. Today, we speak with journalist and Telling Room cofounder, Sara Corbett, who writes the true story of Amanda Lindhout, another journalist who was held in captivity for more than a year by Somali extremists in the book, A House in the Sky. We also spend time with Eleanor Morse who explores her own experience with South African apartheid in the novel, White Dog Fell from the Sky. https://www.themainemag.com/radio/2014/03/cultural-divide-130/
Robin on "unnatural" Republicans and the first Atheists' PAC. Guests: Amanda Lindhout, captivity survivor; Lindy West, WMC Social Media winner; Amy Richards on MAKERS; and Christine Stark on Duluth's vanishing Native women. Plus, Saudi Arabia in the Surrealism Corner—again.
Many of us remember the 1978 movie Midnight Express, where Billy Hayes is held and tortured by his Turkish captors, as attempts are made to extract ransom.Well imagine today, a young woman caught in a similar situation, kidnaped and held by brutal captors, not because of an attempt to smuggle drugs, but because she was trying to tell a story as a young and struggling and aspiring journalist. The location was not Turkey, but Mogadishu, Somalia, considered by some, one of the most dangerous places on earth. What brought Amanda Lindhout to this place, and what in her background gave her the strength and grace to survive a devastating 460 day ordeal? Her story A House in the Sky, tells us a great deal about her, and also about the indomitable resiliency of the human spirit. My conversation with Amanda Lindhout:
