Send us a Text Message.Do you know a super ager? Maybe you are one? To be honest, we hadn't even heard of the term until a few days ago — but we wanted to learn more, so we reached out to a person who knows a whole lot: Dr. Angela Roberts, a University of Western Ontario professor who is the Canadian research lead on an international study into super agers. It turns out a super ager is someone 80 or over who has the memory of someone 20 or 30 years younger. It also turns out that researchers have found quite a few of them, with the hopes of understanding more about what makes these people tick. What her team discovers could help us all live longer, more enjoyable lives. Spoiler alert: We asked Roberts to weigh in on Joe Biden's debate performance. Take a listen.
On the morning of Thursday, June 20, unionized nurses at Ascension St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore held a rally outside the hospital to raise awareness of their efforts to secure a first contract and to show management that they're not backing down from their core demands for safe staffing and an operational model that puts patients and patient care first. "St. Agnes nurses are calling on Ascension to accept their proposals to improve safe staffing and, subsequently, nurse retention," a press release from National Nurses Organizing Committee/National Nurses United (NNOC/NNU) stated. "Nearly 20 percent of nurses at St. Agnes began employment at the hospital after January 1 of this year. Meanwhile, just over a third of nurses have more than four years of experience at the hospital... The Catholic hospital system is one of the largest in the country with 140 hospitals in 19 states and also one of the wealthiest, with cash reserves, an investment company, and a private equity operation worth billions of dollars—and, because of its nonprofit status, is exempt from paying federal taxes." In this on-the-ground episode, we take you to the NNOC/NNU picket line and speak with Nicki Horvat, an RN in the Neonatal Intensive Care unit at Ascension St. Agnes and member of the bargaining team, about what she and her coworkers are fighting for. National says its candidates have been subject to incidents of violence and intimidation during the election campaign. Its campaign chair says one candidate has been forced to move house after a gang threat. Another candidate had a bottle of beer thrown over them and had their house broken into. Some volunteers have been subject to death threats, intimidation and a dog attack. Last week, Te Pati Maori candidate Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke had her home invaded and vandalised in an attack the party says was politically motivated. As well as that, Labour candidate Angela Roberts says she was slapped on both cheeks during an election debate. National's Auckland central candidate Mahesh Muralidhar was filmed in a restaurant wearing his blue National Party jacket. The video has now been shared with a gang boss narrating over the top. Mahesh speaks to Susana Lei'ataua. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6338218966112
Political candidates are facing increased violence. National says a volunteer's faced death threats, another was attacked by a dog, and one candidate has moved house after threats from a gang. In the past week, Labour's Angela Roberts says she was slapped at a debate, and Te Pati Maori's Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke says her home was invaded. Parliamentary Service Chief Executive Rafael Gonzalez-Montero told Mike Hosking that they've seen a rise in attacks and intimidation this election campaign. He says what's concerning is volunteers and support staff are also experiencing it. LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
National has disclosed allegations of violence and intimidation threatening to disrupt their election campaign. Allegations claim a gang threat has forced a candidate to move house, a volunteer's faced death threats, and another's been the victim of a dog attack. Labour's Angela Roberts has reported being slapped at a debate, and Te Pati Maori's Hana Maipi-Clarke says she's had a politically-motivated home invasion. National Campaign Chair Chris Bishop says the gangs are campaigning for a third Labour term and aim to keep National out of Government. "The behaviour our candidates have experienced on the campaign trail has been disgraceful. There's been death threats, there's been people having to move house, one of our candidates has had a Head Hunters member threaten them when they're out at dinner." Police are investigating after a Labour Party candidate was allegedly assaulted following an election debate earlier this week. Angela Roberts, who's standing in the Taranaki-King Country electorate, says a man grabbed her shoulders, shook her and slapped her cheeks with both hands after the debate in Inglewood on Tuesday night. She has filed a report with police, and they're making inquiries. The Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins says he is very concerned about the incident, and candidates seem to be feeling more at risk this election campaign than in previous years. Angela Roberts speaks to Lisa Owen. [embed] https://players.brightcove.net/6093072280001/default_default/index.html?videoId=6338047673112
National has released its fiscal plan ahead of the election. But the operating allowance is the biggest difference between it and Labour's – with Labour having $3.5 billion to National's $3.2 billion. National has also allowed a $9.9 billion buffer for anything extraordinary like a natural disaster. Finance Minister Nicola Willis has also said they will do a mini-budget ahead of Christmas if elected. But National's potential coalition partner NZ First could throw a potential spanner in the works, particularly with tax cuts. Meanwhile, Labour candidate Angela Roberts has taken to social media to say she was slapped by a member of the public. The event happened at a campaign debate at her local Rotary Club at Inglewood in Taranaki. Newstalk ZB Political Editor Jason Walls joined Heather du Plessis-Allan. On this week's Personal Best, Gillian Russell looks at whether prescribing exercise is a realistic step... Angela Roberts talks about her experience of exercising during and after chemotherapy for breast cancer. Dr Anna Campbell from Napier University explains how exercise can benefit a cancer patient, what type of exercise and how often might it be useful ... and how much of an impact it can have on our mental health. Plus is there any evidence it might help to prevent recurrence? Personal Trainer Kristeen Pollock describes how her mum's cancer diagnosis led her to start working with cancer patients. Dr Juliet McGrattan explains why her passion for fitness has led her to quit her job as a GP to concentrate on encouraging others to become more active, believing she can have more of an impact on people's health that way than writing prescriptions for tablets. Angela Roberts had a dream to become a food blogger, so one day she jumped in and simply did it and has been more energetic, happy and thrilled with life than ever, mainly because she believes she's living her true purpose. In this episode Angela describes how we can know what our life's purpose is because once we've found it, we become a person who is thrilled to get out of bed in the morning to work more towards fulfilling that purpose. Angela Roberts, is publisher, founder of SpinachTiger.com, a food, blog with over 900 recipes, and beautiful food photography. Angela has moved from the corporate world to decorative painting to food blogging, where she feels she has found her true creative zone. Angela has an M.A. in clinical psychology and has a great interest in family issues, especially the role that food and dining plays in the dynamics of family life. Nuggets of Wisdom from Angela: "Do the right thing because it is the right thing." "Sometimes people do the right thing for the wrong reason. They do the right things to get ahead, kind of maybe the wrong kind of ambition." "I really believe as human beings, God has created us to be on a particular path. "When we are on the path that is the right path for our DNA for who we are, then we are anxious to get up in the morning. And when you do not want to get up in the morning, there is something wrong. And that's where I was. I was really sad. I remember talking to people, not feeling a lot of hope. And that was until I found my next new reinvention of myself."I said to myself, "That is what I am going to do. I am going to be a food blogger," and that was 8 years ago, and I have never lost that buzz. And that is how I know I am doing what I am supposed to do." "There is something that is so you. It is just YOU. Everyone has a dream. If you have some kind of dream. Just do one thing that starts it, and you may fail. Just try something and then let it evolve and be willing to embrace the journey and not the goal." “I have a strong spiritual life that keeps me grounded and keeps defeating thoughts at bay. I have to remember, I could be just one blog post away from a big break. If I am doing what I’m happy doing, and I am excited, that is all I need to do.” “Tomorrow’s always going to be better.” “Even though I am not a Millennial, I do not want people to think I cannot do technology.” Some of Angela's Favorite Things: Personal habit: "For my whole entire life, I have been a person who exercises consistently, and I think that it helps your brain. I just think it helps me feel really good." Easy meal: "A little olive oil in the pan, some chopped onions, some ground beef and some frozen peas. Salt and pepper. And then you can add in what you want, you can put in rice." Recession Delicious – Italian Ground Beef, Peas and Onions Possession: "Silicon spatula from Oxo, for eggs or frittatas. It works for everything. The big one." Angela's Favorite Book: Willpower: Rediscovering the Greatest Human Strength Book by John Tierney and Roy Baumeister Best advice received: "Do not ever put anything in writing you do not want the whole world to see." Angela's Happiness Formula: "I am happiest when I have a purpose and when I act on it, when I work with intention and I live on a schedule." A Challenge from Angela: "I challenge all the listener's today to take one day this week or next week and fail at something. Do something you have always wanted to do."
