A message from Emily Ruff at Sage Mountain: "On July 10th, a historic and catastrophic thousand-year-flood raged through Vermont. The entire Central Vermont region experienced tragic devastation as waters raced down mountainsides and rivers breached dams to levels not seen in our lifetime. That night, amidst torrential rain, the road to Sage Mountain Botanical Sanctuary turned into a raging waterfall of tumbling boulders and whitewater rapids, the flood tearing the only access to the Mountain down to the bedrock.  Your tax deductible donation helps sustain the Sanctuary through this long-term disruption so that we may continue our work of conservation, education and healing and continue the legacy of Rosemary Gladstar into the years to come." Twitter: @lucreti_a Thank you to the supportive EA members who encouraged me to publicly share this difficult experience, to my friends and research collaborators for your kindness, and to the courageous women who helped me in writing this post, who I hope can someday speak publicly. To those who know me, please call me Lucretia. This is a megapost. Each section has a distinct purpose and may evolve into its own standalone post. For the full picture, I recommend reading to the end. 0. Overview Introduction. I was one of the women who spoke to TIME magazine about sexual harassment and abuse in EA last winter. Here is my story without media distortions. Advice for Female Founders and AI Researchers in the Valley. Silicon Valley can be a brutal place for women. This is what I wish I knew five years ago. My Case Study. I am an AI researcher. I believe my AI alignment research career was needlessly encumbered by: My experience with the sexually abusive red pill and pickup artist sphere, which entwined with a branch of AI safety in Cambridge, MA and Silicon Valley. I describe the unethical core of red pill ideology, including the running of “rape scripts.” The recent retaliation by a Silicon Valley AI community to my report of harm. This community's aggressive reaction showed many gender biases latent in AI culture. Systemic Sexual Violence in Silicon Valley. I believe the male-dominated environment, nepotistic connections to investor money, extreme power disparities between wealthy AI researchers and aspiring young women in the AI and startup sectors, hacker house party culture, psychedelics misused as date rape drugs, cults of personality, substantial population of low empathy, risk-seeking, and/or narcissistic men, and lack of functional policing mechanisms make sexual violence a systemic problem in a critical X-risk industry. Why I Spoke to TIME. I address some misconceptions about the original TIME article on sexual harassment, and why I spoke to TIME in the first place. Helpful Books and Movies. I share learnings about sexual harassment and abuse after ~15 months of focusing on the problem, including my favorite books and movies about sexual harassment/abuse to flesh out more conceptual space. For all the seriousness of this post, these books and movies are entertaining, gorgeous, and healing! Future Sequences? Depending on the reactions to this post, I would love to write a Sequence of sexual harassment and abuse from first principles. Call to Action: Recovery and Litigation Funds. AGI should neither be built nor aligned in environments of deceit. We propose a call-to-action for a Recovery Fund and Sociological AI Alignment Fund / Litigation Fund to counteract the sexual predation Moloch in Silicon Valley, which is a sociological AI safety problem. Appendix Excerpts from red pill literature Rape vs Consent Culture 1. Introduction Some recent posts on the EA forum have thoughtfully and earnestly addressed sexual harassment and abuse. Thank you to the EA community for your insightful posts and comments, and for genuinely trying to address the problem, which made my distressing experience of speaking to the TIME magazine journalist more worth it. Given the mix of emotions generated by the TIME magazine piece published last winter, I want to clarify some points, avoid tribalism, and focus on first principles, mechanisms, and my own experience. This post isn't meant to be EA-hating. On the contrary, I deeply love parts of EA and AI alignment research, which has made these experiences somewhat heartbreaking. Red Cross Secretary General, Sarah Stuart-Black, says they're making sure they don't step on any toes. "One thing that might be worth clarifying is, we're trying to operate where there are gaps and the responsibility for clean-up of silt actually rests with others, local and central Government." A Chinese-American activist and writer, Wong fights for access and representation for people with disabilities from all backgrounds. Wong launched the Disability Visibility Project in 2014. It began as a partnership with StoryCorps to offer opportunities for people with disabilities to record their own oral histories. It grew into an online community that documents and amplifies disability media and culture. Wong, who never felt represented in popular culture while growing up as an Asian-American girl with a disability, wanted to help people tell their stories without the filter of the media, an act she hoped they would find empowering.    Wong's writing on disability issues has been published in numerous media outlets across the country. She has edited two anthologies that feature essays written by people with disabilities, and she published her memoir, Year of the Tiger, in 2022. In 2020, Time recognized Wong as one of 16 notable people fighting for equality in America.  Wong continues her intersectional advocacy for the disability community and the Asian American community through her efforts as an activist and writer. In her own words, “I want to create a world that is reflective of all of us. This is my life's work.” At about 10:50, Pete and Sandy discuss a recent Teen Vogue article, “ 'Year of the Tiger' By Alice Wong Is a Letter to Asian American Disabled Women and Girls,” excerpted from the book   At about 11:30, Sandy responds to Pete asking about what Alice means to the disabled communities and beyond and how she functions as an “oracle”   At about 15:10, Pete and Sandy reflect on how relatively short the post-Americans with Disabilities Act history is and about Alice and her contemporaries as “OGs”   At about 17:05, Sandy gives background on her meeting Alice and “community organizing” and how “Letters to Thrive” served as a catalyst    At about 20:50, Pete and Sandy talk about interdependence and community, including the symbolism of the peaches brought from Masumuto Farms   At about 26:55, Sandy tells of a recent birthday party that Alice threw for her; this serves as a shining example of Alice's copious generosity, selflessness, and care for others   At about 29:00, the two discuss Alice's emphasis in her book and in her life on rest and relaxation and recharging    At about 31:40, Sandy and Pete examine the word “ally” and Sandy discusses what we as a collective can do to be more than just “performative” allies   At about 34:00, Sandy gives out bookstores and libraries of note, including Green Apple Books   Alice Wong's Twitter Page   Disability Visibility Twitter Page   Buy Year of the Tiger: Activist's Life   From Eater Magazine, October 2022: "Constant Cravings"

Over the past 25 years, Africa has lost half of its lion population. The Lion Recovery Fund is a collaborative initiative created by the Wildlife Conservation Network in partnership with the Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation with a vision to double the number of lions in Africa. Their investments also affect biodiversity, climate, and the people who live in and around Africa's majestic conservation areas. With lions as their primary focus, they can address these issues together. Dr Peter Lindsey identifies Africa's most innovative and effective projects to conserve lions and restore their landscapes. In this episode, Peter reflects on how his childhood passion inspired him to pursue a career in wildlife conservation in his adult life. He recalls his first time seeing a lion on a trip to the bush in Zimbabwe with his parents. He outlines the three different threats to lions: direct - poaching, trophy hunting, captures and snares; indirect - habitat loss, farming, mining and logging; and food sources - the poaching of lion's prey for bushmeat, and how they all contribute to the decline in the lion population. He expresses the critical role they play in the ecological system as one of the top predators, explaining that they are an “umbrella species,” so if you protect habitats and prey that lions depend on, you know that the ecosystem is pretty intact. Peter reveals that a common misconception people have about lions is that male lions are lazy, and females do all of the hunting - explaining that the two genders have different hunting habits. Finally, Peter shares his goal to double the lion population by 2050 and describes how humans and wildlife can co-exist in Africa. If you wish to support the cause or want to find out more, visit www.lionrecoveryfund.org/***This episode is brought to you by Kase Filters.
