The loss of federal food assistance due to the government shutdown will affect nearly 2 million Illinoisans. Gov. JB Pritzker is directing $20 million to help close the gap, but Sun-Times reporter Tina Sfondeles explains that's only a fraction of the need. She talks with executive producer Simone Alicea and Alex Nitkin with the Illinois Answers Project about what's next. Plus, they discuss the charges facing local political candidates, transit funding, suburban tax loopholes, and a couple of architectural projects worth taking a look at.  UPDATE: Early Friday, about an hour after this episode came out, state lawmakers passed a $1.5 billion transit bailout. Instead of some of the more controversial statewide taxes, money will come from the Road Fund and a localized sales tax increase. We'll have more next week. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss an announcement made by the IRS back in July that churches and other houses of worship are now allowed to endorse political candidates directly to their congregations. This type of political activity had previously been barred by the IRS because of the tax-exempt status of nonprofits, but that's no longer the case. Today's conversation explores why this ban was initially put into place and what led to the change of heart. Episode Links You may be interested in reading more about this decision from the article in The New York Times that prompted today's conversation. “I.R.S. Says Churches Can Endorse Candidates From the Pulpit” was written by David A. Fahrenthold, and you can read it HERE. And Dr. White wrote a blog earlier this year titled “Pastors Endorsing Politicians,” which you can read HERE. As Dr. White mentioned, while he wouldn't personally make the choice to endorse a political candidate from the pulpit, that does not mean that he feels the Church should shy away from speaking out on cultural and political topics. You may be interested in checking out the following series that were given by Dr. White at Mecklenburg Community Church: “What the Bible Really Says About…” explored the topics of A.I., immigration, abortion, politics and angels, and “Where Angels Fear to Tread: Meck Talks Politics” looked at how we, as Christians, are called to engage the political realm. On this episode, Sam and Josh unpack a landmark development for churches: the Internal Revenue Service's shift on the 1954 Johnson Amendment. In a joint court filing with two Texas churches and the National Religious Broadcasters, the IRS now affirms that clergy can endorse political candidates from the pulpit without risking their tax-exempt status. The IRS reframes such endorsements as comparable to a “private family discussion” within the congregation during worship—with statements made via usual church communication channels not qualifying as political intervention. Pastor Allen teaches about the biblical leader Joshua and the hardships he endured through faith, as well as New Testament examples of perseverance and trust in the Lord. Fulfilling our purpose in God's Kingdom will require faith, trust, and endurance—but it's the most important thing we will ever do.

Churches in the United States have been regarded as a kind of sleeping giant for elections. The issue is, because of different regulations on nonprofits, churches have not been able to endorse political candidates. And because of this, they've been forced, to an extent, to stay out of politics. Critics have criticized the issue the other way though, noting that the regulations have acted as a government restriction on religion. And now, things have changed. The Internal Revenue Service has determined that churches can now endorse political candidates.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and guests and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

In this episode, we delve into the alarming intersection of politics and violence in Mexico. From September to May, a shocking 34 candidates or aspiring candidates have been assassinated across the country. Security analysts point to drug cartels as the primary culprits, using intimidation and murder to sway local elections.Cartel election violence in Mexico significantly impacts the electoral process in various detrimental ways:Intimidation and Coercion: Cartels use violence to intimidate candidates, voters, and political parties. This can force candidates to withdraw from races or alter their platforms to align with cartel interests. Voters may also be scared away from participating in elections due to threats or actual violence at polling stations.Candidate Selection and Manipulation: Cartels often support or oppose specific candidates, manipulating elections to ensure their preferred candidates win. These candidates are usually those who will turn a blind eye to cartel activities or actively support their operations once in office.Undermining Democracy: Violence and manipulation by cartels undermine the democratic process by eroding public trust in the electoral system. This can lead to lower voter turnout and a sense of disenfranchisement among the populace, weakening the overall legitimacy of the government.Political Corruption: Cartel influence fosters corruption within political institutions. Politicians supported by cartels may engage in corrupt practices to maintain cartel favor, further entrenching criminal elements within the political system.Policy Influence: Elected officials backed by cartels may prioritize policies that benefit criminal organizations, such as weakening law enforcement efforts against organized crime or facilitating drug trafficking operations, rather than addressing public needs and concerns.Increased Violence and Instability: The presence of cartel violence during elections can escalate overall violence in the country, contributing to broader social instability and insecurity. This environment can make it difficult for genuine political reform and effective governance to take place.(commercial at 7:07)to contact me:bobbycapucci@protonmail.comsource:Nine deaths, two assassination attempts, and candidate's HQ ambushed by barrage of 50 bullets: Political violence reaches boiling point in Mexico ahead of elections | Daily Mail Online
