Vidcast: https://youtu.be/czAdC2EQ59w The legendary Brit prime minister Winston Churchill once remarked that Americans always do the right thing…after they've tried everything else. That quote is so relevant to our continuing, wrongheaded mismanagement of CoVid. When the pandemic was originally raging in the winter of 2020-21, many refused to wear masks, distance, avoid indoor crowds, and flocked to outdoor super-spreader events. As the result, CoVid patients filled our hospitals, we ran out of ventilators, and we needed refrigerator trucks to warehouse our dead parents and grandparents when undertakers, cemeteries, and cremation facilities were overwhelmed. We shut down our economy and operated our businesses and schools using high tech remote communications. Things improved this past winter and spring with the availability of 3 CoVid vaccines. Older and sicker adults got vaccinated followed by teens and most recently younger children. Then too, more people but not all began using appropriate masking and modified their indoor activities and outdoor gatherings. Mass transit use resumed. Things were looking good through the summer. Plans were made to reopen schools, offices, indoor dining, theaters, and indoor sports events. Then over the summer the more transmissible Delta variant arrived from from India. It could cause asymptomatic infection even in the vaccinated, and those infected silently spread it. Indoor venues began to require proof of vaccination and masks, but some faked the vax cards and refused masking. Then studies began to show that immune protection against Delta CoVid dropped dangerously low by 5 to 6 months after vaccination. A booster campaign began and is ongoing. This month the super-transmissible Omicron variant arrived from South Africa, and it seems to require even higher levels of antibodies for neutralization necessitating boosters for all Cases are again raging, and hospitals are again filling. Omicron isn't helping, but it is likely not the main cause. The cause is the false assumption that we still have vaccine protective immunity and our failure to do something about it. Only about 60% of Americans are vaccinated, and we lag behind most other Western nations. The vast majority of us now have waning immunity and only 30% have been boosted. Despite our diminishing protection, indoor activities and outdoor mass events with sloppy or negligible masking continue. Don't be surprised if lockdowns, remote schooling, and virtual work again become necessary. Now is the time for all Americans to finally heed Winston Churchill. Isn't it obvious that we've tried everything else, and it's high time we did the right things. Everyone should have 3 shots, including the boosters, of the very effective Moderna or Pfizer vaccines. Those eligible for additional boosters as 4th or maybe 5th shots must get them. Everyone should wear 4 or 5 layer N95 or FDA certified KN95 masks indoors, on mass transit, and outdoors around others. Indoor dining should stop, and outdoor dining huts must be ventilated and distanced with public health guidelines standardizing their construction. Indoor theater and indoor sports events should be postponed until CoVid cases stop rising. We've tried everything else and now we must do the right thing. That means everyone must be vaccinated and we must have strict enforcement of masking, distancing, and ventilation. Look… personal choices stop when your choices expose others to a deadly disease and endanger the community. We will need timely changes to public health recommendations and crystal clear CDC recommendations. Short of these changes, this life-threatening pandemic will never end, and the virus will imprison us because of our own stubbornness and avoidance of public health necessities. The 800,000 Americans we've already lost will be joined by millions more. If you haven't yet figured it out, we're fighting a war, and every American is on the front line. Do your part! Uncle Sam and we all need you. #CoVid #delta #omicron #vaccination #masking #immunity
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/qryCnr7nrJg Receiving a third boosting dose of the Pfizer vaccine at least 5 months after the second immunizing dose reduces the risk of death from a Delta CoVid infection by 90%. Israeli public health investigators reviewed the data from 843,208 members of the Clalit Health Services who were 50 years of age or older. The mortality rate for those who only received the first two doses of the Pfizer vaccine was 2.98 per 100,000 persons per day. Receiving that third dose reduced the rate by 95% to 0.16 per 100,000 persons per day. Projecting that lifesaving statistic to the United State population of middle aged and older adults shows that a timely booster saves 3,686 of our parents and grandparents every day or 1,345,520 of our beloved family members in a year. The lifesaving plan is to get 2 shots of either the Pfizer or Moderna mRNA vaccines followed in 5 to 6 months by a booster of either vaccine since its ok to mix and match. Those who are immunosuppressed should get a third immunizing shot 1 months after the second Pfizer or Moderna. Then, they should get a boosting dose 6 months after the 3rd shot. Those who got the Johnson and Johnson vaccine should get a boosting dose 2 months later. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2115624 #CoVid #delta #booster
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/SxOANS2RUhs Unvaccinated persons cause up to 90% of all new CoVid infections. This the conclusion of a German mathematical modeling study seeking to understand the huge uptick in CoVid infections since October that is clogging German hospitals and driving consideration of lockdowns. The German mathematicians calculated that two-thirds to as many as three-quarters of all new CoVid infections occur in unvaccinated persons. In addition, their calculations suggest that 38 to 51 % of these infections occur because unvaccinated persons infect other unvaccinated persons. Said another way, unvaccinated persons contribute more to the spread of CoVid than waning immunity in the vaccinated. None of us wants to spend another winter locked up in our homes and unable to pursue any public indoor activities such as in-person work, in-person school and college, and indoor public activities including shopping, theater, and mass transit. The surge of Delta CoVid and the appearance of Omicron now make it clear that mandatory vaccinations and masking are a must. We have been fighting the CoVid War with the equivalent of a voluntary army, and we are losing. We have tried battling CoVid with voluntary vaccinations, masking, and testing. That strategy has failed miserably, and now, Uncle Sam want you! This is a public health emergency, and responsible governmental officials at the federal, state, and local levels must all act to require vaccination and boosting for all. They must act to enforce the use of masks in all public places but especially in stores, theaters, and on mass transit. They must act to require testing and isolation of all at risk for CoVid or with frank symptoms of it. To do less is just plain irresponsible and dangerous. We already ask and demand by the enactment of laws that everyone drive at safe speeds because reckless driving can not only hurt the driver but innocent bystanders. Vaccination and responsive masking against CoVid are the same, since the only way to control this virus is for everyone to possess immunity to it and to avoid spreading it. Your body, your choice is not your choice if you hurt others. And every doctor in the United States, those in clinical practice, medical education, research, and public health should be calling on their patients to get vaccinated and follow solid public health principles. They should actively and publicly support the efforts of public officials to mandate the same. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.11.24.21266831v1.full.pdf #CoVid #vaccination #breakthrough #boosters #masks #mandates #testing

Vidcast: https://youtu.be/mvIBVSrazAI The Pfizer CoVid vaccine was 90% effective in preventing any CoVid Delta variant infection in fully vaccinated teens 12 to 15 years of age. This from a collaborative study from Israel's Clalit Institute and the Harvard Medical School that studied 94,354 vaccinated teens and compared their outcomes with an equal number of unvaccinated controls. The study data shows a gradual development of effective Delta CoVid immunity as the teens received the 2 shots of Pfizer vaccine. Vaccine effectiveness against any Delta CoVid infection was 59% 2-3 weeks after dose 1, 66% 3 to nearly 4 weeks after dose 1, and 90% 1 to 3 weeks after dose 2. The vaccines ability to prevent a symptomatic Delta CoVid infection was 57% 2 to 3 weeks after dose 1, 82% 3 to nearly 4 weeks after dose 1, and 93% one to 3 weeks after dose 2. This study gives reassuring evidence that 2 doses of at least one of our current CoVid vaccines effectively protects children against the Delta variant of CoVid. This provides an excellent rationale for vaccinating all children. https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMc2114290 #CoVid #vaccine #children #teens
Vidcast: https://youtu.be/Z5oopP1-PhE The Delta CoVid variant triggered a huge spreader event on Cape Cod in association with this year's 4th of July holiday. A comprehensive epidemiological evaluation of those infected by researchers at Harvard and MIT determined that the majority of those infected and spreading the infection were fully immunized against CoVid. Genetic analyses were obtained from the viruses infecting 467 persons of the 1,098 outbreak cases associated with multiple 4th events including many indoors. The data showed that the super-spreader was powered by 40 individual sources of Delta CoVid yet 83% of the outbreak cases were attributable to a single person spreading CoVid during 25 separate transmission events most involving vaccinated persons as both secondary spreaders and victims. The bottom line: even if fully-vaccinated you can contract CoVid and spread it if you don't mask and distance, particularly indoors. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.10.20.21265137v1.full.pdf #CoVid #superspreader #vaccine #mask #distancing #indoor

With John DiLeo Recorded 17th October 2021 by Auckland Unitarian Church Well, it finally happened. On the 17th of August, New Zealand joined the rest of the world in dealing with an outbreak of the Delta COVID variant in the community. Our government's “short, sharp” response announced that afternoon turned out not to be all that short…and, recently, has lost a great deal of its sharpness, as well. Vidcast: https://youtu.be/8l8KbQFbEIM When Delta CoVid infects children and teens, the duration of symptomatic illness and the need for hospitalization is about the same as for the initial British variant. London researchers studied 694 kids who tested positive for CoVid during the Delta predominant May to July 2021 and compared their data to 706 kids who tested positive during the Alpha predominant December to May. The median illness duration was 5 days with a range of 2 to 9 days for either Delta or Alpha. The median duration by age for both variants for the younger 5-11 year old children was 4 days (3-8d) and 2 days longer at 6 days (4-10d) for older 12-17 year old children. The 7 most prevalent symptoms were the same for both variants: headache, fatigue, fever, smell issues, sneezing, runny nose, and sore throat. Symptoms tended to be more prominent with Delta than with Alpha. Hospitalization for Delta CoVid was necessary for 3.5% of younger kids and 1.7% of the older ones. For Alpha, it was 2.2% of younger and 1.9% of older. https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.10.06.21264467v1.full.pdf #CoVid #delta #children #duration #hospitalization
Nearly a week after oil was first reported off the coast of Orange County, investigators still have not been able to determine exactly how much crude has spilled into the Pacific. Tar balls have been spotted further south in San Diego County, but it's unclear if they're from the oil spill. During the pandemic, people have taken up lots of new hobbies and activities. That includes yoga. And some yoga instructors have found ways to create culturally sensitive spaces for students of color, in an industry where many feel white westerners have co-opted the practice. Reporter: Gabriella Frenes, The California Report As COVID-19 cases decline in California, Los Angeles County health officials are encouraged by another metric -- more teenagers are getting vaccinated. In the past month, there was a 5% increase in Latino 12-15 year olds receiving the free shots. The percentage was similar for Native American children in the same age group, followed by Black children. This is not a devotion in the normal format. Instead, I recorded an account of having recently survived the Delta variant of Covid-19 in August 2021.I hope to give an understanding of the effects of the virus and its sometimes deadly consequences. I survived due to 3 factors: 1) The diligence of my wife who woke me at 3:00 am on August 11th after taking a sample of my oxygen levels with a pulse oximeter and I was at 51%. She strongly urged me to go with her to the ER for the 3rd time in two weeks. I was very sick by this point and resisted, but eventuall yielded. The ER doctor, after having a CT scan performed on my lungs, told me if I had not come in when I did it was likely I would not have survived that day.2) The excellent care and treatment by the staff in the ICU of a nearby hospital over the next 6 days. (The fact I was released so soon after being told initially I would likely be there 3-5 weeks was due to the medical treatments and prayer.)3) As mentioned above, prayer made my recovery possible through medical means and I believe also by direct intervention from GOD. I try to explain it in this episode.I discovered after recording this episode I got the dates I off by a week when the event occured - it was actually on 8/11-17 when I was hospitalized. My apologies - Full show notes at hopesharbor.netHope's Harbor Gritty Bible DevotionsEpisode #22Title: My account of surviving the Delta variant of covid.Date: October 4th, 2021Contact: info@hopesharbor.netKey verse(s):Intro: When I recorded the following account as part of E21 it was too long to put in a regular episode since I try to keep them less than 10 minutes. The reason I left my account long on details is my belief many people are dying from complications from covid that aren't realized until it's too late. A beloved uncle died last year from one of these complications and I've had a couple of friends/former coworkers who also died from similar causes.I too, nearly lost my life to one such complication. For this reason and the spiritual experience, I offer this on the off chance it may help someone.Episode focus: We are eternally safe in GOD's care regardless of events that happen to us in this life.First of all, I'm not someone who flaunts any experience with GOD, because these are deeply personal. Secondly, I don't believe in showcasing experiences with GOD in an attempt to motivate GOD's people. I believe it often leads to Christians seeking GOD for some kind of experience, something to generate excitement. This belief is based on experience while attending a church as a child that focused much attention on emotional stimulus. However, I will try to share what happened, but caution against seeking this kind of experience. Anyone who seeks GOD in order to know Him better and serve Him out of love for Him will experience sometimes wonderful revelations. But these have been few and far between in my walk with GOD for the last 44 years this month, September 2021. The walk of faith, by definition believing what we cannot see, implies we should serve GOD without demanding or expecting a visible, physical show of evidence. Jesus said better are those who believe without seeing (evidence). This principle is found in John 4:48 – ‘Then Jesus said to him, "Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe." And also: John 6:26 - Jesus answered them and said, "Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled.”'On July 28th I became ill, thinking it was a cold and sore throat only, but by the next day recognized it as the same symptoms as covid that I had

Canadians who travel internationally (58 per cent) remain wary about trips abroad due to the rise of the Delta COVID-19 variant, and less than one quarter plan to travel internationally in the next six months, more than two-thirds (78 per cent) say international travel is one of the things they're most looking forward to as the pandemic stabilizes. Tina Cortese discusses this survey by Wise Technology. Jim Lang looks into a survey from the Ontario Lottery Corporation that suggests sports fans are super-excited about the new legal option to make single event sports bets.

TEANAU TUIONO to the Minister of Foreign Affairs: Does she stand by her statement that “We're acutely aware of the environmental risks associated with deep-sea mining”; if so, why did New Zealand abstain on a motion supporting “Protection of deep-ocean ecosystems and biodiversity through a moratorium on seabed mining” at the International Union for the Conservation of Nature last week? CHRIS BISHOP to the Minister for COVID-19 Response: What percentage of the eligible population in New Zealand had received two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine as at 7 August 2021, and what modelling, if any, has he seen relating to how the level of vaccination coverage could affect the severity of COVID-19 restrictions? IBRAHIM OMER to the Associate Minister of Research, Science and Innovation: What recent announcements has she made about helping New Zealand's COVID-19 response and preparedness for future pandemics? Dr JAMES McDOWALL to the Minister of Immigration: What communications, if any, has he received from Afghan translators who live in New Zealand about bringing their families to New Zealand, and what actions is he taking as a result? BARBARA EDMONDS to the Minister for Women: What support is the Government providing for women and girls adversely affected by COVID-19? Hon SCOTT SIMPSON to the Minister of Corrections: Is he confident that the Department of Corrections' policies are keeping New Zealanders safe from COVID-19; if so, why? ANGELA ROBERTS to the Minister of Conservation: What recent announcements has she made regarding Jobs for Nature projects in Otago and Southland?
On the Season 3 premiere of Momentum: A Race Forward Podcast, Western States Center Executive Director and Race Forward Senior Fellow Eric Ward joins us to ground and center us, and you, our listeners, in our racial justice work! Update: Hiba is back from sabbatical, and now Chevon is taking her well-deserved time off, and in the meantime, Dennis is back to fill in! Hiba and Dennis open the episode with a short recap of recent happenings –– the Delta COVID-19 variant, Climate Change/flooding in NYC, the ongoing fight over critical race theory being taught in schools, and refugee resettlement efforts triggered by global events. Holding all this, Dennis and Eric have a conversation inspired by Grace Lee Boggs' quote “what time is it in the clock of the world”, and what it means for the hurdles we are facing as racial justice practitioners. Eric also discusses the urgent work of racial equity, how work towards a multiracial democracy is the alternative to the spread of white nationalism, the case study of the city of Portland, and extremist backlash and insurgencies, and how we can use that backlash as fuel to carry us forward in our work to “12:02AM”. A month ago, we thought things were getting better. We could take off our masks around vaccinated friends, we could go out to eat— we felt safer going to church and to the grocery store. Then the Delta variant hit and it's a game changer, especially for children. Because of low vaccination rates the virus was circulating widely in our community— then it mutated, and we have Delta Covid. We are on the verge of having schools shut down again. Delta Covid is so much more contagious, and it seems to be hitting children much harder. Covid patients are filling...Article Link

國際媒體相關報導 ●CNN:〈Vaccine shortage holds back developing world as rich economies roar ahead〉(疫苗短缺,制衡了發展中國家追趕已開發國家的腳步) ●Macau News澳門日報:〈WTO says disparities in vaccine rates can hit economic rebound〉(WTO認為,令人失望的疫苗接種會打擊經濟反彈) ●Economist經濟學人:〈Why have some places suffered more covid-19 deaths than others?〉(為什麼有些國家疫情致死率比其他國家高?) 國際媒體相關報導 ●Reuters路透社:〈Emerging market investors worry about economic growth -HSBC poll〉(新興市場投資人憂心當地的經濟增長) ●Financial Times倫敦金融時報:〈Rising dollar stokes nerves for emerging market investors〉(美元升值觸動新興市場投資人的神經) ●The Wall Street Journal華爾街日報:〈Investors Lost Hundreds of Billions on China in July〉(投資人在七月份的中國投資損失數千億美元) 分析解讀 新興市場是什麼? Powered by Firstory Hosting

Los Angeles has a new logo! No, it's not the seal of the city........and you can be forgiven if you never realized that we had a logo to begin with........but the city of angels has some new branding and it's got a very nostalgic, 80's vibe to it -- will it work? We'll go In Depth.Former President Trump is filing lawsuits against Facebook, Twitter and YouTube arguing that the social media giants violated his rights when they booted him off of their platforms. And the Olympics are set to begin in Tokyo in less than three weeks -- right when the city will be put in a state of emergency, thanks to the COVID outbreak. So you, your family, and your teenage kids are all fully vaccinated against --- but your youngest child, still too young, is attending summer camp. How worried should you be with the Delta variant out there? We're taking a closer look at working mothers, who after carrying a lot of the responsibility during lockdown ... are getting left behind in the economic recovery. And how does a 4-day work week sound to you? Research suggests it might be just as productive as working the full five. Welcome to Times Will Tell, the weekly podcast from The Times of Israel. This week, as Israel is experiencing a minor surge of the delta or Indian variant of the coronavirus, we speak with The New York Times's South Asia bureau chief Jeffrey Gettleman, who is based in New Delhi. We discuss the horror of the height of the pandemic in India, which the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist describes as every nation's nightmare. Prior to his four years in India, Gettleman has reported from war fronts in Afghanistan and Iraq, was taken hostage in Fallujah, has covered conflict in Sudan, Somalia, Egypt, Yemen and Ethiopia. Covering the pandemic is different, he said, and much closer to home. Hear about the overloaded health care system and how India is slowly stymieing the pandemic. On one hand, we have some states with high vaccination rates and where people are still practicing mask wearing even after they've gotten the shot. On the other hand, we have stagnating vaccination rates in the south, especially among adolescents and anti-vaccine movements, bring in the Delta COVID variant and it might be a lot of trouble across the South in the months ahead.
