This week on Yes But Why, I talk to independent filmmaker and artist, Kelli Horan. Active in the filmmaking community, Kelli Horan was the Screenwriting Co-Director and Programmer at Other Worlds Film Fest 2020; she was a member of Women Communicators of Austin; and she was the Marketing Chair for Women in Film & Television Austin for 2019. She loves to support fellow independent filmmakers to make their visions come to life. Originally from Tucson, AZ, Kelli has written, directed, and produced feature and short films that have been featured in festivals such as SXSW, Other Worlds Film Festival, and Arizona International Film Festival. Alongside filmmaking, Kelli creates visual artwork primarily in the medium of pyrography. Her work has been shown at Art for the People, Cherry Cola Dog, Black Lagoon Gallery, and can be found through the Etsy store, “From the Pyre.” In our conversation, Kelli and I talk about creating new worlds out of the ones we are living. Kelli shares that her start in fiction writing was borne out of teen angst. We examine journaling and its connection to storytelling. We talk about the difference between making art and selling art. Do you make your art for your audience or for yourself? We discuss. Kelli makes a lot of art. Not only has she written, directed and produced quite a lot of films (Between the Trees, A Grievance with Gravity, Maybe Shower, Summer League etc etc etc), but she also creates these amazing collages and pyrography art pieces as “From the Pyre.” And that's not even her dayjob! Kelli tells me about the way she prepares for film festival submissions after she completes a film! Because, as she shows us, the process is not complete when making a film if you do not put in the effort to get it seen and connect it with its audience. Kelli's meditative childhood games playing with marbles reveal a very organized and prepared artist. She taught me a lot about the work before the work and the importance of a writing ritual. To Support Kelli Horan, follow her on Facebook and Instagram for announcements about upcoming film projects and artwork releases. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/spacepugs Instagram for art/personal: https://www.instagram.com/fromthepyres/ Instagram for film: https://www.instagram.com/spacepugpics/ Kelli's artwork can be purchased through the Etsy store, “From the Pyre.” (Highly suggest! This week on Yes But Why, I talk to independent filmmaker and artist, Kelli Horan. Active in the filmmaking community, Kelli Horan is currently the Screenwriting Co-Director and Programmer at Other Worlds Film Fest, a member of Women Communicators of Austin, and was the Marketing Chair for Women in Film & Television Austin for 2019. Leaders of B2B - Interviews on B2B Leadership, Tech, SaaS, Revenue, Sales, Marketing and Growth
Filippa Noghani, Head of Marketing BFS and Strategic Accounts at Virtusa, shares her insights on working at both startups and large companies. She also shares her experience sitting on the Board and being Marketing Chair of NYC Fintech for Women, an organization that helps level the playing field for female business leaders in Fintech. She threshes out comparisons from her marketing experience. In addition, she lends her perspective as a female business leader in the workplace.Noghani takes a deep dive into the differences between startup marketing and traditional marketing. In startups, the marketing team needs to be involved with every department: Product, R&D, Sales, Customer Experience. All are heavily involved in helping make the company successful. More traditional marketing is about creating the copy and continuing with brand promotion. It's important to make sure that marketing is seen as a partner in generating revenue, rather than being the role of the sales team alone. Running market research and understanding your customer base are essentials for successfully selling your product and growing your company. Noghani talks about striking a balance at the workplace. As a woman, she has experience of having to continually work on messaging while standing her ground on ideas. She advises a firm but diplomatic path. And working for someone who values your insight—that's more precious than pay and should be cherished.Senior business leaders must be mindful of taking care of their employees. Demonstrating to employees that you are emotionally invested in them goes a long way. They spend a lot of their time at work, so investment beyond the financial level is crucial.Business leaders wanting to expand their marketing reach will find this educational. There's also some great insight on diversity and workplace culture that can be picked up on this episode.LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fnoghani/ This episode is brought to you by Content Allies.Content Allies helps B2B tech companies launch revenue-generating podcasts. On May 17, 2019, IAQradio launched the first of a 4 part exclusive series with RIA and IICRC on the Maturing of the Cleaning and Restoration industry. Frequent IAQradio listeners and "followers" of the Z-man's blog are aware, on May 1st, 2019 in Phoenix, Arizona an historic announcement was made at RIA's 73rd annual Convention and Exposition. RIA President Lee King, CR and IICRC Chairman Pete Duncanson taking a page from Reagan and Gorbachev's historic Glasnost agreement executed a Strategic Partnership on behalf of their respective organizations. After the execution of the agreement Mark Springer, CR who is RIA's President Elect announced the launch of RIA's AGA committee. The Advocacy and Government Affairs (AGA) committee chair is well known restoration contractor advocate and counselor Ed Cross known in the industry as "The Restoration Lawyer". The Part 1 May 17th show set the table for this week's Part 2 show as RIA's Springer counterpart from the IICRC, Kevin Pearson, IICRC Chairman Elect will weigh-in with his perspective of the strategic partnership and its impact on helping unify the industry leading towards the ultimate goal of "speaking" with one voice. Joining Pearson will be long time industry insider Craig Kersemeier who has roots in both RIA and IICRC. Kersemeier is IICRC's Marketing Chair and former board member who assisted with the negotiation process. His insights and past history helped both parties garner an understanding of past failures and the lessons learned that led to this historic breakthrough! Pearson will share his vision as he ascends to IICRC leadership in Oct of this year on how and why the partnership can help to advance the profession, protect stakeholder interests and increase the influence of cleaners, restorers, and other practitioners to the trade as the industry matures. It is the hope of each organization's leadership that the future of the industry for the next generation in the global marketplace will be one of harmony and collaboration for the greater good. Through Kersemeier's unique perspective he will share his thoughts in his marketing chair role how IICRC's support of the RIA advocacy movement through the AGA initiative can have a powerful impact of how restorer's are regarded by the insurance industry, government entities and the general public. This will set the table for the Part 3 show in the series when Ed Cross returns to delve deeper into the AGA's future plans and how industry stakeholders can support the advocacy initiative! Again this week, IAQradio's Restoration Global Watchdog will join the show. Pete Consigli and Craig Kersemeier have a history of collaboration trying to unify the industry through their respective influence as RIA and IICRC insiders that dates back over a decade. Pete who is known to IAQradio listeners as not holding back his enthusiasm, likens the announcement of the partnership agreement to a well know scene from the A Team TV show and movie sequel. During the closing scene A Team leader Hannibal Smith would light a cigar and say, "I love it when a plan comes together". Pete and Craig will have to flip a coin to determine who offers the other the match to light the cigar after this week's show! Please join the Z-man, Radio Joe, the Global Watchdog this week for the Part 2 show with IICRC's "A Team" members Kevin Pearson and Craig Kersemeier for IAQradio's exclusive 4 part series on industry maturation and unification.
