How do you talk money without losing trust—or your audience? From quarterly earnings calls to investor pitches, the world of financial communication is a tightrope walk of clarity, persuasion, and credibility. What makes numbers sound good? When does transparent/positive become too transparent/positive? And why does jargon sometimes feel like the best financial armour? Tune in for a lively dive into the art (?) of financial storytelling—with three experts sharing plenty of insights, red flags, laughs, and a nudge to rethink your next fiscal update and/or investment, especially when your are being pandered to with pathos and patriotism. Long notes: In this episode we discuss financial communication and start with readability. A few selected studies are: Bonsall, S. B., & Miller, B. P. (2017). Annual report readability, current earnings, and earnings persistence. Journal of Accounting and Economics, 45 (2-3), 221-247. Both Bernard and Erika mention PhD work on financial communication. Bernard's student Nils Smeuninx completed his thesis in 2018; the title is “Dear Stakeholder. Exploring the language of sustainability reporting: A closer look at readability, sentiment and perception”. Erika refers to a PhD study on how small investors respond to plain English as opposed to more complex or less readable text: Rennekamp, K. (2012). The complexity of qualitative accounting disclosures: Managers' choices and investors. Cornell Theses and Dissertations. https://hdl.handle.net/1813/31452 For her part, Veronika co-supervised a student - Xiaoxi Wu, now at Bocconi University in Milan (Italy) - with the Accounting department at Lancaster University (UK), resulting in this article: Koller, V., & Wu, X. An agentless passive, the sentence ‘mistakes were made' helps to avoid blaming anyone for making mistakes. It has become a catchphrase, often used humorously to hint at disaster, including in gifs and memes Back to financial communication: Referring to the gendered metaphors that it often features, Erika mentions this book chapter: Boggio, C., Fornero, E., Prast, H., & Sanders, J. (2017). Seven ways to knit your portfolio: Is investor communication neutral? In Garzone, G., Catenaccio, P., Grego, K., & Doerr, R. In the first part of the episode, we also discuss tone as an important concept in financial communication. Intriguingly, media studies have shown that coverage in itself is good enough for the so-called “markets” (investors, analysts, fund managers) to have a positive attitude towards a company: Engelberg, J. E., & Parsons, C. A. (2011). The causal impact of media in financial markets. Journal of Finance, 66(1), 67-97. Finally, the 2019 annual report by Lockheed Martin, which includes the CEO statement that we analyse at the end of the episode. For more details make sure you visit our blog! Imagine you're leading a small organization, but you're struggling to recruit and afford the senior talent you need to grow. You could hire a part-time executive. So-called “fractional leadership” is common in startups and is spreading to other businesses and nonprofits. But while a fast-growing number of senior leaders seek this work arrangement, many companies are unsure of how to go about it. Tomoko Yokoi and Amy Bonsall are experts on the practice. Yokoi is a researcher at the TONOMUS Global Center for Digital and AI Transformation at IMD Business School. Bonsall is a former executive at IDEO and Old Navy who works as a part-time chief product officer with several organizations. They explain when and how fractional leadership works best—for the individual as well as the organization—and how to do it right. Yokoi and Bonsall wrote the HBR article “How Part-Time Senior Leaders Can Help Your Business.”

'Proclaim Liberty' with Clint Armitage (Christian Liberty, Motivation & Leadership)
In this episode of the Radio Coffee House, Clint Armitage takes us to a certified organic fruit farm in Bonsall, California, to explore the profound concepts of living, laughing, and loving forever through the lens of faith. Join Clint as he delves into how these timeless principles can be transformed when viewed through the eternal perspective provided by God's word. Clint begins by discussing the popular phrase "Live, Laugh, Love," and reframes it within a spiritual context. He introduces the Hebrew word "tamid" to illustrate God's perpetual love, linking it to the sacrificial practices in the temple and ultimately to Jesus Christ's final sacrifice. This powerful analogy emphasizes that God's love is continuous and eternal, offering a foundation for believers to live from a place of victory rather than striving for it. Moving on to the concept of "forever live," Clint draws from Daniel 2:20-21 and other scriptures to highlight God's sovereignty over the seasons of life. He reassures listeners that God is in control, even when circumstances seem dire, and encourages them to seek God first in all things. Through the example of Paul's endurance and faith, Clint underscores the importance of living with an eternal perspective, focusing on others, and walking in the Spirit. Finally, Clint explores "forever laugh" by sharing a personal anecdote and reflecting on the importance of maintaining joy and laughter even during tough times. He references Colossians 3:2 and the life of Helen Keller to demonstrate how perspective can transform our experiences. By focusing on things above and trusting in God's plan, believers can find joy and laughter amidst trials and tribulations. Tune in to this episode of the Radio Coffee House to discover how to live, laugh, and love forever through faith in God. Learn how to embrace God's perpetual love, live with an eternal perspective, and find joy in every circumstance. ----- 00:20 - Clint Armitage is at an organic fruit farm in California 02:25 - The word tamid means to live your life with love and laughter 05:24 - Daniel 2:20-21 says God is in complete control. He deposes and raises kings 06:45 - Trust the Lord in everything is super, super hard when the seasons come up 09:01 - Look to Paul when it comes to struggle and suffering during these tough seasons in life 16:21 - A man was giving a testimony about his life and his wife left him 22:49 - Clint Armitage: You know, God loves you. You know, God is the giver of joy -----

Joe Bonsall, 76, the longtime tenor vocalist of Country Music Hall of Fame group Oak Ridge Boys, has died from complications of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. In this very special conversation, Joe gives us a glimpse of the future, almost as if it was a "Message from Heaven." Six months ago, citing the half-decade onset of the previously-mentioned disorder, Bonsall retired from performing on the road with the group after 50 years.Notably, alongside his Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry membership, Bonsall was an inductee of the Philadelphia Music Hall of Fame and Gospel Music Hall of Fame."It has been a great 50 years and I am thankful to all the Oak Ridge Boys, band, crew and staff for the constant love and support shown to me through it all. I will never forget, and for those of you who have been constantly holding me up in prayer," stated Bonsall.Rest in peace...our friend. Pro-Palestinian protests are continuing this morning at campuses both across the country and right here at home, as students at UCSD have established a "Gaza Solidarity" encampment along the campus' Library Walk. Oceanside has declared a state of emergency over last week's fire on the pier. Two growing sinkholes are threatening a family's home in Bonsall, and the county says it's not responsible for fixing the damage. Natalie talks with LEGEND Will Bonsall and we're really excited to bring this conversation to you! Will is legendary for his seed saving efforts, the Scatterseed Project, as well as his radical homesteading in western Maine. He is the first to admit that he is not a market gardener and some of the things he does on his homestead aren't feasible if you're trying to make a living selling food, but many of them are! I love his approach to what he calls “eco efficiency” and there is a lot to learn with how Will has designed his systems to use plants to their maximum capacity and make the most of his land. Have you given art a chance to help you grieve? For some people, art is much more than a coping mechanism; it is the only way out. In this episode, I'm joined by the incredibly inspiring author Barbara Bonsall (BB) Wood. After her young adulthood in Europe, Barbara settled in Virginia, earned a Ph.D., and won state, national, and international recognition as a highly successful biology teacher. She lost her father almost at the same time she was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease, which impaired her dominant hand, forcing her to stop teaching. Many people would have seen that situation as a dead end, yet for Barbara, it was the complete opposite; it was the beginning of a beautiful story. Throughout our conversation, you'll hear about Barbara's extraordinary and inspiring grief story, her ability to resignify and transform setbacks into daunting challenges, and how she turned audio tapes recorded by her later father about his experiences as a World War II prisoner and his experiences as an Olympic gymnast into the book: "The Violent Years."Additionally, Barbara shares some of her favorite stories about her father, talks about how writing and drawing saved her, shares her thoughts on relying on our families to heal, and much more. Tune in and listen to episode 198 of Grief and Happiness and be inspired by Barbara's incredible story of resilience, hope, and healing. In this episode of Bean There, Done That! Phil chats with brand strategist and marketing expert Allan Bonsall. Also known as a successful author and long-standing panellist on ABC Radio's Hidden Persuaders programme, Allan and Phil discuss the importance of standing out in a crowded market, creating a compelling brand story, and understanding the customer's needs and emotions. Allan emphasises the shift from seller-controlled to customer-controlled markets and the need for businesses to differentiate themselves to attract customers. He also highlights the role of technology as a tool, not a solution, and the significance of customer experience in building trust and loyalty.Summary
William Bonsall was captured and imprisoned by the Germans three months after landing in the second wave at Normandy during World War II. Bonsall later escaped to Poland and ultimately competed on the 1948 U.S. Men's Gymnastics Olympic Team. Forty years later, he recorded his life experiences in a series of audio tapes that cover the decade between 1940 and 1950. THE VIOLENT YEARS, a nonfiction novel, is a creative account of Bill Bonsall's transition from an impoverished urban neighborhood “hoodlum” during the Great Depression, to a scrappy 20-year-old dodging German bullets. The tale then follows his transformation from a passionate poet, wooing, losing, and regaining the love of his life, and rising to the epitome of athleticism and elegance as an Olympic gymnast—all in the span of a single decade! Here, his daughter tells his story! This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5351305/advertisement

Self-sustainability is important for safeguarding the well-being of our planet and our future generations. Adopting sustainable practices can help mitigate the depletion of natural resources, reduce environmental impact, and foster resilience in the face of global challenges. This week, we welcomed Lan Thai, also known as Chef Lando. She has an inspiring story that led to the unique vision for Neu Mune farmstead, a 19-acre farm in Bonsall, California. As a Vietnamese refugee and successful San Diego restaurateur, Lan values sacred customs that have sustained life for thousands of years. With her farmstead, she plans to address both the tyrannical and environmental concerns with regenerative farming and sustainable living. You won't want to miss this inspiring episode that offers a REAL solution for the problems we face today. Quotes: “The essence of being the boss is managing people and knowing how to get the best collective effort out of them.” – Lan Thai “We need to continue these things. They were rituals for a reason, and we've done them for thousands of years.” – Lan Thai “We truly need to do some more critical thinking. We need to not always just listen to what everybody says and question things, even those you don't usually question.” – Lan Thai Key Takeaways: Being the boss isn't just about authority; it's the art of managing people and extracting their best collective effort. Rituals carry the wisdom of time. Their endurance suggests an intrinsic value. Don't just accept what's said; question and explore. Challenge even the unquestioned. Originally from Ohio, Issa enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was a senior in high school. Through his military service, he received an ROTC scholarship and graduated with a degree in business from Sienna Heights University in Adrian, Michigan. Upon graduation, Issa was commissioned as an Army officer, and ultimately obtained the rank of captain. He completed his active-duty military service in 1980 and turned his interests to the private sector. At the height of his career in business, Issa served as CEO of a California-based electronics company that he founded and built in the mid-1990s, which became the nation's largest manufacturer of vehicle anti-theft and auto security devices. In 1994, Issa was named Entrepreneur of the Year. Issa also served as chairman of the Consumer Electronics Association, an organization of 2000 companies within the consumer technology industry.Issa is a senior member of the House Judiciary Committee and the House Foreign Affairs Committee. From 2011-2015, he was the Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and previously served on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, the Energy & Commerce Committee, and the Small Business Committee. As a congressman and leader at California's grassroots level, Issa has championed smart, limited government and advanced legislation to balance the federal budget and promote transparency to hold government accountable to the people.A holder of 37 patents, Issa has been vigilant about protecting intellectual property rights. His successful efforts to fight human trafficking along the U.S. border have resulted in tougher laws, stiffer penalties, and more consistent enforcement. His watchful concern to guarantee that U.S. taxpayers receive the royalties they are owed from mineral interests on federal lands exposed fraud and mismanagement at the Mineral Management Service (MMS) in 2006. In 2008, when Congress was asked to pass the Troubled Asset Relief Program (TARP) in the wake of that year's financial crisis, Issa stood by his experience starting and growing successful businesses, opposed giving a blank-check bailout to Wall Street, and voted against all government bailouts.-The Sandlot Cast:Chauncey Leopardi is an American actor known for playing Michael "Squints" Palledorous in the 1993 film The Sandlot and Alan White in the 1999 series Freaks and Geeks.Marty York is an actor, known for playing Alan “Yeah-Yeah” McClennan in The Sandlot (1993).

We're so busy and focused on teaching and making sure our students achieve and meet each of our content and grade level standards, but is that all we want them to learn? As teachers, we know we're teaching the whole child and helping develop and learn skills that are necessary for outside the classroom as well. One of those important lessons is gratitude, and I have the perfect person to help us with this topic. I met today's guest at a conference in Utah, knew I had to meet her, accidentally ran into her at a restaurant, and the rest is history! She embodies gratitude and created a way to involve kids in the process. So in today's episode, we're discussing cultivating gratitude with kids featuring guest Elle Rowley, author of Agnes and the Sheep. Elle Rowley is a writer, investor in family-owned businesses, and founder of the award-winning baby carrier company Solly Baby. She lives in Bonsall, California with her husband and four children on a small, three-acre farm with a barn that they have turned into a one room schoolhouse for the community. Teaching skills outside the curriculum might be easier than you think. Elle gives two tips on cultivating gratitude with kids in your classroom, and they both involve you! She also wrote a book, Agnes and the Sheep, which will be a series that is surrounded by the idea of gratitude. Therefore, Elle provides ways for parents and teachers to utilize Agnes and the Sheep to help teach gratitude, for cultivating gratitude doesn't just have to be learned in the classroom. Throughout the episode, we also discuss a wide range of topics beyond gratitude, but honestly, they all end up going back to cultivating gratitude in some way. Elle has so many different experiences that she shares from homeschooling her kids with a community, how her first business impacted her second career, and her journey to becoming an author. With each topic discussed, you can't help but notice the wisdom and gratitude she expresses. With the current stressors of our job, life, and world, it's easy to slack off when practicing gratitude and instead have our minds wander to the negative. But after listening to this episode, I hope you see the beauty in every day. By cultivating gratitude for ourselves, students, and kids, we're going to see the positive and be grateful for the things in our everyday lives. As a young girl growing up on a farm in San Diego County, Lan Thai's dad would hand her shrimp shells from that night's dinner and tell her, “Go feed the trees.” Lan was too young to understand why, but she did. The trees grew gaudy with fruit. Years later, as she was becoming a chef and diving deeper into the nutritive and health properties of food, she learned you can't grow healthy food without healthy soil. And shrimp shells are star soil-makers. Born in a Thai refugee camp as Lan's family fled the communist takeover of Vietnam, they found their way here. Started growing their own sustenance, fishing local waters for proteins. Her father hadn't studied soil science, or farming for that matter. “I asked my dad how he knew shrimp shells were good for soil,” she says. “He said ‘Grandma told me.' So, in addition to science, I'm a strong believer in the wisdom of ancients.” On top of passed-down food wisdom, she started studying the scientific studies of healthy food. Her restaurant—Enclave, a small cafe inside the workspace of hard kombucha company, JuneShine—incorporates what she learns. It's not all twigs and probiotic superseeds. She serves fried chicken and waffles. But every dish on the menu, she explains, has some fermented element. In this episode of HHH, Lan explains why fermentation is a key to unlocking healthy properties in food. We also talk about her newest project: she just took over a 19-acre regenerative farm in Bonsall where she'll grow food for her restaurants (she just opened a second location in UTC Westfield)—everything from fruit trees to a medicinal herb garden—and eventually plans to make it into a destination with cabins and an education center, classes on permaculture, food preservation, composting, cooking. In “Hot Plates,” the longtime Mission Beach staple, Saska's, is being reborn as Mo's—a new, Tecture-designed steakhouse with private liquor cabinets and a throwback wood-and-vinyl booth vibe. Cross Street Chicken has opened its third location in the Del Mar Highlands Town Center, with a full cocktail bar run by a former drinksman from Sycamore Den and Fernside, and local steakhouse success story Rare Society is about to become a nationally known brand. In not-so-good news, the economic fallout of the pandemic hit local brewery Modern Times, who had to close their outposts in Portland, Oakland, Santa Barbara, and L.A. But fans of Texas brisket can rejoice—after three long years of renovations and the world falling apart, our perennial winner of “Best BBQ,” Grand Ole BBQ, is reopening its original North Park location. For “Two People, Fifty Bucks,” Troy has been out at brunch venues across the city filming a preview for SDM's upcoming “Brunch Bash.' While “working,” he discovered the cover star of this month's issue of SDM—the fried chicken and waffles at Brian's 24. David went to Whiskey House for all the Whiskey, and Lan went to Lola 55.

In this episode, I'm joined by Amy Bonsall, founder and CEO of Nau, a business designed to support teams and individuals in flourishing at work. And in this conversation that's exactly what we delve into—what does it take to flourish at work? Amy shares three areas she focuses on in her work with organizations and groups around connection, adaptability, and fair potential, pointing out what we as individuals can work on and what needs to be supported by organizations. We talk about the impact of the pandemic and the need to build back boundaries, routines, and rituals into our work norms. Hailing from IDEO, it's not surprising to hear Amy champion experimentation and prototyping as we step into this new hybrid work environment, its benefit being to de-risk trying solutions and always being open to adapt to what's not working. And in support of Sustainable Ambition, Amy speaks to the need to build rest and recovery into every day, not just waiting for a vacation.I love how Amy shares great stories in this episode, pulling from her work experiences, as well as research that supports her counsel and the work she does.I so enjoyed this conversation with you, Amy! Curated News Small Flowering Shrubs with Big Impact | Garden Gate Magazine | Susan Martin Important Events September 23, 1717 Birth of Horace Walpole, 4th Earl of Orford, English writer, art historian, and Whig politician. His father served as the first British Prime Minister. As an adult, he designed a picturesque summer home for himself in southwest London, which he called Strawberry Hill. Horace's little castle caused a sensation, and he opened his home to four lucky visitors each day. An 1842 admission ticket spelled out rules for tourists: The House and Garden are never shown in an evening; and persons are desired not to bring children with them. The Gothic Revival architecture complete with a round tower was a nod to his accomplished ancestry and is gorgeous inside and out. The stained glass and the library are two favorite aspects among visitors. Horace was a hardworking writer and a serious scholar. Horace coined the word serendipity after he finally located a painting he wanted for his home. He wrote the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764), ten years later. In addition to his other works, Horace wrote The History of the Modern Taste in Gardening (1771). A fan of natural gardens, he famously observed that his garden hero William Kent was the first garden designer to “[leap] the fence, and [see] that all of nature was a garden.” Horace immensely enjoyed his five-acre romantic garden at Strawberry Hill, which he affectionately called his “enchanted little landscape” and his “land of beauties.” In addition to a grove of lime trees, the garden featured a sizeable Rococo shell seat with a back designed to look like an enormous shell. Today the one-of-a-kind bench has been recreated, and copies are available for gardeners to place in their own gardens. The oldest tree on the grounds is called the Walpole Oak, and a servant is said to have hung himself from the tree after stealing silver. In 2019, the first Strawberry Hill House Flower Festival offered local florists a chance to share their creations inside Horace's Gothic masterpiece. The event is now an annual celebration of flowers. Today Strawberry Hill House hosts a community garden. Rose lovers can enjoy their own nod to Horace Walpole with the bubblegum-pink David Austin rose Strawberry Hill. As for Horace, this industrious man often found inspiration in gardens, and he once wrote, One's garden... is to be nothing but riant, and the gaiety of nature. Horace was also a fan of greenhouses and, in particular, the control they afforded gardeners. In a letter to William Mason on July 6, 1777, he wrote, Don't let this horrid weather put you out of humour with your garden, though I own it is a pity we should have brought it to perfection and [then] have too bad a climate to enjoy it. It is strictly true this year, as I have often said, that ours is the most beautiful country in the world, when [it is] framed and glazed... Finally, it was Horace Walpole who wrote, When people will not weed their own minds, they are apt to be overrun by nettles. September 23, 1861 Birth of Mary Elizabeth Coleridge (pen name Anodos), English writer, polyglot, and poet. She was the great-grandniece of the English poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. In her poem September, she wrote, Now every day the bracken browner grows, Even the purple stars Of clematis, that shone about the bars, Grow browner; and the little autumn rose Dons, for her rosy gown, Sad weeds of brown. Now falls the eve; and ere the morning sun, Many a flower her sweet life will have lost, Slain by the bitter frost, Who slays the butterflies also, one by one, The tiny beasts That go about their business and their feasts. She also wrote an utterly charming little garden poem called Gibberish. Many a flower have I seen blossom, Many a bird for me will sing. Never heard I so sweet a singer, Never saw I so fair a thing. She is a bird, a bird that blossoms, She is a flower, a flower that sings; And I a flower when I behold her, And when I hear her, I have wings. September 23, 1958 On this day, the Dayton Daily News (Ohio) shared a little article about an old park that had been created to teach botany students. Back in 1930, Brother William Beck, a member of the University of Dayton biology department, filled two purposes with one park. The campus green needed re-landscaping and botany classes needed nearby, well-stocked gardens to study. [William] set to work on his project, with the aid of local nurseries, and collected over 200 varieties of plants and shrubs in the central campus park, labeling all of them with their Latin names and English derivatives. Since that time, the University of Dayton… tended such out-of-the-ordinary plants as a Logan elm (a transplanted sprout from the famous tree); a coffee tree; pyramidal oaks; black alders; and ginkgo trees, to name a few. Brother Beck's well-worked-out plan seems to have been practically forgotten through the years. Botany classes no longer wind among the shrubbery... September 23, 1986 On this day, Congress selected the rose as the American national flower. The Journal News (White Plains, New York) reported that, The House, brushing aside the claims of marigolds and dogwood blossoms, corn tassels and columbines, ended decades of indecision Tuesday and crowned the rose, that thorny beauty, America's national flower. The voice-vote decision... [ended] a debate over an appropriate "national floral emblem" for the United States that had flickered off and on since the late 19th century. Unearthed Words Even now, as the graves of these women went untended and their passings unmourned, the seeds they had scattered turned the hillsides red and orange from May to September. Some called the pirates' bounty flame trees, but to us, they were known as flamboyant trees, for no one could ignore their glorious blooms, with flowers that were larger than a man's open hand. Every time I saw them, I thought of these lost women. That was what happened if you waited for love. ― Alice Hoffman, The Marriage of Opposites Grow That Garden Library Will Bonsall's Essential Guide to Radical, Self-Reliant Gardening by Will Bonsall This book came out in 2015, and the subtitle is Innovative Techniques for Growing Vegetables, Grains, and Perennial Food Crops with Minimal Fossil Fuel and Animal Inputs. Today's Botanic Spark Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart September 23, 1869 Birth of Edgar Lee Masters, American attorney, poet, and writer. His most famous work was his collection of poems that narrate the epitaphs of a fictional town named Spoon River in The Spoon River Anthology (1915). Edgar grew up in Lewistown, Illinois, which is near an actual Spoon River. The book features an epitaph for a fictional nurseryman - a lover of trees and flowers - named Samuel Gardener, which ends with these words: Now I, an under-tenant of the earth, can see That the branches of a tree Spread no wider than its roots. And how shall the soul of a man Be larger than the life he has lived? Edgar once wrote a poem about love, which began, Love is a madness, love is a fevered dream, A white soul lost in a field of scarlet flowers. His poem, Botanical Garden, is a conversation with God and ends with these words: “If it be comforting I promise you Another spring shall come." "And after that?" "Another spring - that's all I know myself, There shall be springs and springs!" Thanks for listening to The Daily Gardener. And remember: “For a happy, healthy life, garden every day.”

Will Bonsall is the visionary gardener whose half-century of experimentation and iconoclasm can help us save human civilization from collapse. His method, which he refers to as "gardening without borders," takes into account all the inputs and outputs of a garden or farm, in contrast to the usual methods of conventional, organic, and permaculture production. In addition to gardening, teaching, and seed saving, Will is also a novelist. His 2010 work, Through the Eyes of a Stranger: Yaro Tales Book One, takes his philosophy and imagines it in practice in a working, sustainable civilization.
