HBs, we're back with more Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole! The second (first?) book in the series, A HUNGER LIKE NO OTHER, did not disappoint! This book starts at 11 and then refuses to simmer down. Get ready for big feelings, incredulity, and enthusiastic cackling (though, you should be used to that by now). There were so many times when Mel thought the hero could not be redeemed and somehow Kresley Cole pulls it off beautifully. She's a wizard! TW: short mention of suicidal ideation and brief conversations about dubious consent, non-consent, and coercion. Bonus Content: Sabrina went to SteamyLit Con and Sherdidn't ask Anita Kelly about London's cow story... but she might have mooed? (the jury is still out), gaslighting with beautiful cross stiches, "yes-and"ing friends with barnyard noises, gnawing your own leg off as the reader meet-cute, Emmaline is an Immortal Youth ^TM, "all the checks are cashed!", he's a sledge hammer wielded by a ticking time bomb, a Kresley Cole behind-the-back handy ^TM, picturing cartoon-mascot-wolf-action during the super hot werewolf schmex scenes (why brain?!), and so much more!Lady Loves: Sabrina: dye your hair! Sabrina is finally going to have green hair again!Melody: consider a front flip! Mel panic-purchased a one month membership to her local trampoline park to close out the summer with house-bound kids and SHE DID A FRONT FLIP for the first time in YEARS. It was so empowering! So fun! Your body can do shit you might not even know about anymore! So, just noodle on maybe doing that front flip at the next opportunity.Subscribe! Rate! Review! Hearts & Daggers

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 26, 2024 55:33

Summary: You're out of this world, listener! Join Holly and Devin today as they discuss books set in or featuring outer space. Devin has always been obsessed with space exploration and studied it in college, whereas Holly only really wants to read about this subject in her books. Whether you have a passion for astronomy or astrology, whether you dream of flying to the moon or are glad your feet are firmly planted on earth, these books have something for you!  Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:41): Devin discussed A Cosmic Kind of Love by Samantha Young, a unique romance following event planner Hallie Goodman and NASA astronaut Christopher Ortiz as they orbit each other and then collide. After discovering his video diaries from the ISS (International Space Station), Hallie develops a crush on the charismatic astronaut and starts to send her own recordings to his discontinued NASA email address. Little does she know, though, that Chris is watching them and developing a crush of his own. Devin's key takeaways were: Not only is the book full of videos where Chris describes what it's like to live on the ISS, but there's metaphorical space for better and worse laced throughout this novel. Chris works for NASA and did 5 months in space, but both he and Hallie struggle with space, taking up more of it in their lives and not letting it get in the way of their fledgling romance. Both protagonists have a lot of trauma and a lot of current struggles with their families, especially their parents. This informs how they show up in their relationship and how they react to various triggers. A lot of the book involves the repair or boundary setting of Hallie and Chris with their families.  Chris, having dated a socialite named Darcy and Hallie who is consistently wrapped up in the world through her work have to fight for their positions in society and for authenticity in their relationships. Even Hallie's dad struggles with posturing and connection when he buys a gigantic house to make his ex jealous. The Dagger (23:48): Holly discussed Station Eternity by Mur Lafferty, book one in the Midsolar Murders series and a novel following Mallory Viridian, a human living on the space station Eternity amongst various species of aliens. Having left earth after realizing that people connected to her are murdered at an alarming rate, Mallory's existence on Eternity is peaceful… until a shuttle full of humans comes to the station and the bodies begin to pile up again. Holly's key takeaways were: One of the best aspects of the book was the various aliens on board, ranging from the Gneiss who are creatures made of living rock to the Sundry, an insect species similar to wasps who have a hive mind and can only communicate with you if three or more of them gather together.  The murder mystery component of the story felt misleading - there wasn't so much the real focus of this story and didn't come together in a way that felt satisfying; there was some confusion on the core thrust of the plot and what the reader should be focused on.  Ultimately, this book had a lot of promise and intriguing world building of alien species cohabitating in a sentient space station, but the execution felt chaotic and messy. If you're looking for a sci-fi thriller with a unique twist, though, check out this series.  Hot On the Shelf (47:34): Holly: Shark Heart: A Love Story by Emily Habeck Devin: How You Get the Girl by Anita Kelly What's Making Our Hearts Race (50:52): Holly: Dune Part 2 Devin: Bread baking weekly   Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com   If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Mark Sanderlin narrates this charming romance set on the Pacific Crest Trail with the perfect mix of emotion and humor. Host Jo Reed and AudioFile's Emily Connelly discuss this hiking romance full of beautiful vistas, surprise rattlesnakes, and trail magic. Alexi and Ben set out to hike the PCT for very different reasons, but when they meet each other on the trail and decide to be hiking partners, they discover a sweet connection. Sanderlin's narration sounds natural, and he smoothly captures Ben's distinct laugh, Alexi's nerdy monologues about birds, and their growth as they connect on the trail and off. A vivid and transporting listen. Read the full review of the audiobook on AudioFile's website. Published by Hachette Audio. "I would never in my life want to do this, but I enjoyed reading about it." This is the audio from our in store book launch with Anita Kelly for their latest romance Something Wild & Wonderful which, if you follow us on Instagram, you will already know that Becca cried her way through. In a good way. This is one of our favorite conversations yet. You'll hear Anita talk about their background as a romance reader and writer, the process of getting Something Wild & Wonderful from great idea to final draft, how they approached writing what is a version of a classic queer trauma narrative in a realistic but hopeful way, writing hiking that hard core PCT through-hikers approve of, the trials and tribulations of writing a book where nothing really happens (which we mean as a high compliment), discovering they'd written an autistic main character. You'll also get a sneak peek at book 3 in this series and a discussion of Alanna of Trebond as an underappreciated queer icon.

Summary: Lace up your aprons and preheat the oven to 350 degrees, friends! We're talking Cooking Competitions today. Holly and Devin unpack the way that a competitive atmosphere can turn up the heat on both romantic tension and animosity with two books that follow the same plot of filmed cooking competitions but land with completely different outcomes. They both agree that food adds two more senses to descriptions in books; instead of merely visual and auditory prompts, food descriptions add taste and smell to ensure the reader is immersed in the created world.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (3:30): Devin discussed Love and Other Disasters by Anita Kelly, a novel centering around two contestants on the cooking show Chef's Special. Dahlia Woodson is a queer divorcée starting her life over again and hoping the competition will jumpstart her new direction. London Parker is an openly nonbinary, pansexual person out to show their haters and the world that they're more than their gender identity (and that their desserts are truly the best). Her key takeaways were: Our protagonists are just as easy to fall in love with as they were falling in love with each other; Dahlia is spunky, energetic, and has dark flowing hair that London can't help but gaze at. London is focused, reserved, and brave in a way that will inspire any reader.  Chef's Special, which is similar to the real shows MasterChef or Top Chef, serves as a romantic catalyst by proximity but also to add tension and uncertainty to our burgeoning love story - at any point, either London or Dahlia can be sent home.  There are trigger warnings for transphobia, homophobia, and misgendering. Devin also wants to add more for toe sucking and sex with foods because she hates being sticky. That being said, the sex in this book is fantastic.  The Dagger (18:42): Holly discussed The Golden Spoon by Jessa Maxwell, a debut true crime novel that will be released on March 7, 2023. It opens on the gothic family estate of host and celebrity chef Betsy Martin, where the 10th season of the hit TV show Bake Week will be recording in the next 7 days. Betsy is faced with a massive thunderstorm on the property in chapter 1 and let's just say that things don't improve from there. Holly's key takeaways were: The baking show itself was reminiscent of The Great British Baking Show, and Holly thoroughly enjoyed the descriptions of food and baking throughout the novel, though it is eventually overtaken by the mystery at the core of the story. The book peeks behind the glossy curtain of these kinds of shows and digs into the night scenes, post-filming, where the cast dine and sleep together (including all the tensions and discomfort that involves)  The POV alternates between all the characters, which can normally be tricky for the reader. Maxwell is able to execute such that it worked for this novel, and while Holly felt confused on a few occasions, overall felt it was the best choice based on the plot.  Hot On the Shelf (34:57): Devin: Thistlefoot by GennaRose Nethercott Holly: Flight by Lynn Steger Strong What's Making Our Hearts Race (39:23): Devin: Snow skiing in Colorado Holly: Barbarian, a horror film Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Having been published just back in January, this contemporary romance revolves around a cooking competition on reality TV, where sparks fly between London Parker, who has come out as the show's first openly nonbinary contestant, and Dahlia Woodson, a klutzy and quirky divorcee with huge hair. Aside from diving into the book itself, this particularly lengthy episode diverges onto some tangents, such as the giant size and weird flatness of halibut, The Lake House being a comfort watch despise its blatant plot holes, and Bruce quoting The Magnus Archives's Alexander J.
