Are You One of More Than 700,000 On U.S. "Watch-Lists"? Craig Peterson: You've heard about the no-fly list, right? Yeah. How about the terrorist and other watch lists? It's impossible to get your name off, even when there was no reason to be there in the first place? Well, I got some news. The Department of Homeland security has been criticized for many things over the years. One of the things that they have been criticized quite a bit about is this watch list that they maintain. They have a watch list for no-fly. People get put on that watch list. It was initially intended to be, we know this guy's a terrorist, so we're going to put them on, right. [00:00:45] It's not always the way it goes. It starts out almost innocuous, and before you know it, there are all kinds of people getting caught in this big, big net. [00:00:55] That's what's been happening lately. But, unfortunately, it's going to worsen because the Department of Homeland security has decided to hire regular old companies to help develop this no-fly list and this terrorist watch list. [00:01:14]Apparently, these companies will be looking through all kinds of public data, maybe some private data, social media to provide information for this new domestic terror watch list. [00:01:28] So you look at that and say, okay, I can see that. [00:01:32] We've talked before the problem, man, 20 years ago. I think I was talking about these data aggregators and the issues they create. They're taking public records; they're putting them all together. They're figuring out how it all meshes together, and they come up with a pretty accurate picture of who you are. [00:01:53] Now, I've got to say when I've had them on my show here before, I was talking to them and said, okay, I want to look up my own records. So I looked them up on their platforms. I did not see a single one that was more than about 30% correct about me. This was again, some years ago. I think it's probably been almost a decade since I last spoke with the data aggregators. They really are trying to blend into the background, [00:02:21] Nowadays, this data that's put together by these artificial intelligence systems is not necessarily that accurate, and that gets to be a real problem. [00:02:33] So who is DHS gonna hire? Well, from the description reported here by the Conservative Tree House, it is going to be big tech, specifically, Google, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and more. [00:02:54] The DHS will put them under contracts to hire and organize internal monitoring teams to assist the government by sending information on citizens they deem dangerous. Again, what could go wrong? [00:03:10] Our government is not allowed to spy on us. How many times have we talked about this? You have, of course, the five eyes, and then they added more and more. These are governments that spy on each other's citizens for each other. [00:03:26] So, for instance, the US cannot spy on US citizens. So we have an arrangement with the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, Canada to spy on the US citizens for us that makes sense to you. [00:03:44] Can you believe that? [00:03:46]We spy on their citizens for them, and they spy on our citizens for us. All is good. [00:03:57]What's happening here is The Department of Homeland security realizes it cannot spy on us directly. This is what they've been doing for a very long time, they go to the data aggregators, and they pull up the data that they want. [00:04:12]They want to see if this guy is maybe selling illicit drugs, and they pull up public records. [00:04:19]What cars does he have? How many homes do they own? Who's he dating? Has she all of a sudden been buying diamonds and mink coats? What's going on here? [00:04:31]Now we're seeing that the US intelligence apparatus. It's really going live quickly to put together lists of Americans who could be potential threats to the government and need to be watched. [00:04:49] Now it's all well and good. It's just like president Biden this week saying, Oh, we're going to have these red flag laws. We're going to stop the sale of certain types of firearms and things. It all sounds good. [00:05:04] The reality is we have known about some of these people before, right? So this is all just a red herring that the federal government is doing right now because the real problem is these terrorists, the domestic and otherwise that have shot up schools, have almost always been reported to law enforcement as dangerous people. Some have even been on lists that say they cannot buy firearms, yet they get guns. Bad guys. [00:05:39] It's like here in the US. Where does our fentanyl come from? We're not making a domestically. Our fentanyl is coming from China often through Mexico. It is killing people here in the US. [00:05:54]The whole George Floyd incident, and what's happening with fentanyl in his system, right. The question is, did the police operate properly? What killed him? According to the coroner's report? It was the fentanyl that killed him. [00:06:09]One way or the other that fentanyl got here from China and is being used on the streets, and people are dying from it. Fentanyl's illegal. How could they possibly get it? [00:06:24] It's illegal for a felon to be in possession of a firearm. So how did a criminal get the gun? [00:06:32] The police were warned about people in San Bernardino, California. They were warned. The people in that business told the police. We were calling. We're apprehensive about this guy, and nothing happened. [00:06:48] So now what are we going to do? We're going to cast an even wider net. We cannot take care of the reports that come in right now. We're going to get even more reports, and they're going to be coming from these AI systems. Again, what could possibly go wrong here? It's absolutely incredible. [00:07:12]They look at these reports. They try and determine these are actionable, the FBI or other law enforcement agencies. They've been deciding no, it's not actionable. They've been right sometimes, and they've been wrong other times. This is a real problem. [00:07:29]What shocked me is NBC news with Andrea Mitchell, NBC news. Not a centrist news organization, very far left. NBC News is even reporting on this. They realize the consequences. Here's a quote from NBC. "DHS planning to expand relationships with companies that scour public data for intelligent and to better harness the vast trove of data it already collects on Americans." "The department is also contemplating changes to its terrorist. Watch listing process." Absolutely amazing. [00:08:16] Two senior Biden administrative administration officials told NBC News that Homeland security whose intelligence division did not publish a warning of potential violence before the January sixth Capitol riots are seeking to improve its ability to collect and analyze data about domestic terrorism, including the sorts of public social media posts that threatened a potential attack on the Capitol." [00:08:44] "DHS is expanding its relationships with other companies that scour public data for intelligence. One of the senior officials said, and also to better harness the vast trove of data it already collects on Americans, including travel and commercial data through customs and border protection, immigration, customs enforcement, the coast guard, secret service, and other DHS components". There you go from NBC news. [00:09:11] So remind yourself what the FBI contractors with access to the NSA database already did in their quest for political opposition, research, and surveillance, and then get everything we were just talking about. [00:09:28]The director of national intelligence declassified a FISA judge's ruling. This is judge James Boasberg, 2018 ruling, where the FBI conducted tens of thousands of unauthorized NSA database queries. Do you remember that story? Very, very big deal. This judge is obviously passing these things out like candy and the FBI misusing its power and authority. Again, what could possibly go wrong? [00:10:00]By the way, President Obama apparently has been telling us that we should use the no-fly list to keep people from owning guns. [00:10:08]There's already a database maintained by the FBI. So this whole thing is, as I said, a red herring. Things are going to get really bad if law enforcement does this. Frankly, they're going to do it. There are no two ways about it. [00:10:25]We have to be more careful about keeping our information, our data private. [00:10:32] That's what my whole course: "Improving Your Windows Privacy and Security," is all about. Locking it down because the way Microsoft ships windows and how it installs and configures itself by default does not keep your data private. That's a problem. So that's what we're going through. [00:10:54]Remind yourself of this and just keep chanting, "nothing bad could happen here," right? Ah, the joys of all of these computers and databases and the way they work nowadays. [00:11:07] By the way, if your information is out there at all, even if you use fake names and numbers and addresses and things like I do when it's not required. Right. [00:11:20] I don't lie to the bank. I don't lie to the IRS. Nobody else needs to know the truth. Even if you have been, trying to keep it private. Good chance that they know who you are and where you are. Crazy. Crazy. [00:11:36] Hey, visit me online. Craig peterson.com. Make sure you subscribe to my weekly newsletter.

In today’s episode, you will meet Ben Reuter. He is a lifetime mover with a wide variety of experiences in the movement field. Until a few years ago Ben took this for granted. However, a significant injury illness, a diagnosis of epilepsy for one of my dogs, and the realization of the importance of movement for maintaining his quality of life and physical and mental health let me arrive at the realization that movement is a lifestyle, not just an activity. At the end of the day for anyone movement is key and discussing how it is a lifestyle can potentially allow people to move more or to move better i.e. more efficiently or without pain. Treating it as more than a workout requires a change in mindset and a realization of what the end goal this – maintaining a high quality of life. To connect with Ben, find his links below:Linkedin:

Welcome to podcast 39 of the Security Box. Looks like we've got commentary from the replay of broadcast 38's airing. We'll answer any questions from those comments if any, as well as talk about yet another story I read afterword in regards to Facebook and why it might be a good idea to remove your telephone number or use something like Google or Text Now as your number instead of your primary one. We'll have news, notes, commentary and more. We hope you enjoy the program as much as I have bringing it to you. Thanks for listening! Topic: More on Facebook, why Brian Krebs deleted his Facebook account In an article that I read on April 7th, Brian goes in to detail on why he eventually deleted his Facebook account sometime in 2020. According to the article, a paragraph says: The phone number associated with my late Facebook account (which I deleted in Jan. 2020) was not in HaveIBeenPwned, but then again Facebook claims to have more than 2.7 billion active monthly users. We know that Facebook has never been trustworthy after any type of incident, and I honestly don't believe that Mr. Krebs couldn't be part of the 533 million people affected by the breach. Checking with the site, yours truly isn't effected either, but I honestly wouldn't believe it now-a-day especially since news of this is two years old. The supposed database has been kicking around the Internet Cybercrime community since Last Summer, according to the article. I've never seen any of these databases, and with the massive amounts of databases out there and what they contain, who could confirm every piece of data in it? I like what Have I been Poned and what it is trying to offer, so don't get me wrong when it says that I'm not in there when I put my mobile number in the site to check. We now learn that the database was put up since June 2020 and include names, mobile number, gender, occupation, city, country and marital status. It includes data for 100 different countries and there is a link to a January 2021 twitter post within the article. KrebsOnSecurity goes on to talk about what might happen if someone with malicious intent gets ahold of your mobile number. One of the things that could happen is your phone number changing hands, otherwise known as a Sim-swapping attack. This happens because an employee at the store you got service is tricked in to changing the information to the attacker and you don't find out until you use your phone. Brian talks about how it is probably time to remove your number from services like Facebook once verification of the account is complete. I'm almost tempted on doing this myself. There is a very interesting paragraph in which I got interested in. It says: Why did KrebsOnSecurity delete its Facebook account early last year? Sure, it might have had something to do with the incessant stream of breaches, leaks and privacy betrayals by Facebook over the years. But what really bothered me were the number of people who felt comfortable sharing extraordinarily sensitive information with me on things like Facebook Messenger, all the while expecting that I can vouch for the privacy and security of that message just by virtue of my presence on the platform. We can't vouch for a presence of a sensitive message just because we're on the platform. I've never used Facebook or its messenger client for anything secure anyway, but that paragraph is very important. Are You One of the 533M People Who Got Facebooked? is the question and article title we're talking about in this segment, do read the article. News notes on the blog. Enjoy!

Session 76 This week, we're joined by Allison who has previously shared her story of burnout. We discuss burnout as well as the birth of MedDiaries - our newest project to help with this. This episode is actually taken from The Premed Years Podcast since we're announcing this new project that will greatly impact premed students, medical students, residents, and physicians! [03:35] The Prevalence of Burnout in the Physician Community Allison talks about there are bad days as much as there are good days, which is highly prevalent in the physician community. In fact, 42% of physicians in the 2018 Medscape Report are burned out. Based on personal experience, Allison is passionate when it comes to this topic. She also works in the field of Neurology which ranks second on the list of fields that are most likely to experience burnout, second to Critical Care. More and more people are now researching burnout due to its prevalence in the community of physicians, residents, and medical students. Allison describes how burnout has affected her emotional wellbeing, feelings of self-worth, and even the ability to care for herself. "If you can't take care of yourself, you can't take care of other people well. All too often as physicians, we are sacrificing our own wellbeing so that we can take care of other people." [05:05] Burnout as a Sign of Weakness In the onset of burnout, you begin to feel detached, dissociated, resigned, and separated in some way from the job you were trained to do. And even though it's a high percentage of physicians having burnout, it's not something you experience with other people. You experience it by yourself. "Burnout isn't something you experience with other people. You experience it by yourself." In medicine, what has been taught to us is that if you're strong enough to do it then great; but if you can't handle it, then you shouldn't do it. So if you're struggling with emotional difficulty or feeling exhausted, or if you're experiencing the human side of how difficult it is to be a physician and you talk about it or complain about it, or let it affect your work, then that's seen as a weakness and that it's not acceptable in medicine. This is a subconscious thing, but at the same time, it's something directly taught in a lot of places. You would then have to bury that way deep down inside of you, not in the hospital or in the clinic, but someplace else. If you can't handle it, then there's got to be something wrong with you. This is all a bunch of hullabaloo, but this is what we're taught, unfortunately. But it's not we, the people practicing medicine, who are at fault here as we are all human beings. The problem is we're surrounded by unbelievable pressures and so many different obligations, and other things that take away from the ability for us to practice medicine. For instance, these are things like clicking boxes and EMRs, filling out authorizations - things not about practicing medicine but fulfilling guidelines and nothing to do with directly looking after a patient. "The numbers and pressures on physicians, the number of things that people are being asked to do these days just gets bigger and bigger. The list gets longer and longer." [07:50] Premeds Experience Burnout Too! Premeds experience the same things as well, trying to live up to the standard they think they need to live up to - being a 4.0 student, 520 on the MCAT, and getting all the extracurricular activities in - shadowing and clinical experience. You try to get into the best medical schools and best residencies and be the best doctor. "Burnout is prevalent at every stage of the game. Unfortunately, suicide rates are high among med students and physicians." We can't fix the systemic issues and reason we're discussing it now so as you're going through this process, you get into a position of power where you can make some of these differences. It may be not on a national scale, but on a local scale, specifically for your hospital. That being said, we can change the discussion around burnout. This impetus behind our new project. [09:00] Are You One of Us? Are you a physician and feeling down or burned out? Have you had a terrible day and just need to vent and get something off your chest? Are you a resident working 80+ hours a week in a hospital and watching your patients suffer without any dedicated space or time to talk about it? Are you a medical student feeling the toll of studying all night after working in a hospital all day and wondering if life will look any better when you're an MD or a DO? Are you a premed student with a dream of becoming a physician but you're feeling discouraged by a bad grade or rejection letter, and wondering if you'll ever get there? Wouldn't it be wonderful if there were an anonymous safe place where you could speak your mind and have your voice heard? In this time of extraordinary demands on physicians with 42% of physicians feeling burned out in the latest 2018 Medscape Report, we need a place to be heard. All over the United States, medical centers and medical schools are trying to find ways to help physicians with burnout. Wellness groups and conferences and employee assistance programs have formed. Some residency programs have created programs to help their residents process their grief and other emotions that arise in medical training. There are islands of awareness popping up to try heal and support our exhausted physician workforce and help prevent them from self-destructing and from leaving medicine altogether. [10:22] We All Need Support: Join the Movement! But we cannot do this alone in silos. we need support in a way that we feel connected to all those around us, those who are feeling the way we do but never discuss it openly for fear of looking weak. As attending physicians we are often told to meditate, exercise, and do whatever we can to "fix" our burnout. But we argue that we are not the problem. The systems around us create untenable demand that inevitably leads to burnout. EMRs and endless boxes to check, notes to write, prior authorizations, loss of autonomy, fear of litigation, and lots of reimbursement for doing the incredibly hard work this profession demands everyday. As residents and medical students, we are told to bury our feelings deep down and just get the work done. Yet, we lose a part of ourselves when we don't acknowledge the depths, the fear, the enormous responsibility of telling a family member that their loved one is gone no matter how hard we try to save them. While we don't know the fix for this, one thing's for sure: talking about it helps. Welcome to MedDiaries... When you're having a down moment, call 1-833-MYDIARY and leave an anonymous voicemail. Speak your mind. Drop your guard. Say whatever needs to be said. You will be heard by others feeling the weight of burnout too. This is a place to be heard. Join the movement! [11:53] MedDiaries as Your Trusted Resource All over the country, people recognize there's a problem with burnout. Physicians and people all through every stage of training need a place to talk, and people to talk with about how hard this whole process is. The journey never stops right until you die. "There are pockets all over the place and there isn't a place where people can go to just have their voices be heard." MedDiaries is creating a space where people at every stage of this journey - premed, medical student, resident, physician, or attending physician - can go anonymously and talk about what's going on. We're not going to "fix" it but talking about it is a starting point. And this is what's really missing across the board. Under the MedDiaries umbrella, we're going to have four podcasts: The Premed Diaries Med Student Diaries Resident Diaries Physician Diaries And Allison is hosting the shows! So, whether you're happy because you saved somebody for the first time. Or you're struggling because your boss yelled at you. Call 1-833-MYDIARY. You will be allotted 30 minutes to leave a voicemail. While it's anonymous, you're also welcome to say something about yourself. But we want to keep you protected as well as who you're talking about protected. Tell us what you're feeling. There's no right or wrong. Treat us as a diary. There is healing in speaking what's in your mind and getting it out of your mind and out into the world. "You will be amazed at how much what you say can benefit other people." We're targeting releasing two episodes per week where we get your voicemail. We listen to it, play it, and Allison gives her comments. Then we're going to ask the audience to call in and leave feedback. Again, we're not trying to fix anything. But we're all in this together. When we start sharing our struggles and successes, you'd be surprised at the impact this can make! So the recent outburst then subsequent apology from Diddy pertaining to his actions at a club in Atlanta over the BET AWARDS weekend made me realize something: FAMOUS PEOPLE CAN BE REAL ASSHOLES! I mean of course not all of them are, and to be fair the entertainment industry can make the nicest person become one. Its the backstabbing and shady deals that make you grow hardened skin and numbs your emotions. Still, that is no excuse for some of the behavior we see from famous people, and frankly some people in our everyday lives. To be transparent, I have been called an asshole on numerous occasions. Some may have been warranted, and some were simply people not understanding my position. Truthfully no one really likes an asshole, in fact being called or considered one is a negative, until being an asshole become profitable. You see we have some assholes who became famous because they are assholes. Rush Limbaugh, an obvious asshole, Howard Stern, yep asshole, Donald Trump..total asshole, Simon from American Idol, asshole and most of the cast members of housewives, assholes (in their case splashed with some bitch also) and many more. Diddy's making the band series was more about him being an asshole than it was about the artist. So being an asshole (or an over opinionated profanity laden internet radio show host..hint hint) can actually be a GOOD thing. Don't agree? Well KISS MY ASS! lol Questions: 1) DO YOU THINK FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO ARE ASSHOLES WERE ONE BEFORE THEY GOT FAMOUS OR FAME MADE THEM THAT WAY? 2) NAME SOME FAMOUS ASSHOLES YOU STILL LIKE AND SUPPORT, KNOWING THEY ARE ASSHOLES 3) DO YOU KNOW ANY ASSHOLES IN REAL LIFE, WHY DO YOU CALL THEM THAT? 4) HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH AN ASSHOLE 5) ARE YOU ONE? IF SO WHY?
