I'm author-illustrator, Shanda McCloskey. And our topic today is all about putting on writer's workshops with kids, with our special guest, author, and writing teacher - Lola Schaefer! Welcome, Lola! (Shanda) We always start by telling how we've been doing for the past few weeks, so I'll start. (Shanda) Finished a reeeeally rough sketch dummy for the Rube Goldberg book, Visited my sister in Greensboro, NC, and now I'm working on my first keynote for the Arkansas Literary Association's Annual Literacy Conference (Doll-E 1.0 won 2nd place in the Arkansas Diamond Children's book award)... How've you been, Lola? (Lola) Lola tells about how busy she's been incredibly busy with gardening and books lately. First, can you tell us a little about yourself, the books you make, and your experience with writing workshops? (Lola) Lola tells how she began as a classroom teacher and learned on the job how to get students writing! During this talk, Shanda and Lola discuss the following… What exactly is a writing workshop? How does a regular classroom writing workshop differ from an author visit writing workshop? How long do they last? One session? Multiple? What ages do best in writing workshops? How does a writer-in-residence differ from a writing workshop? What do you write in a writing workshop? How many students per session? What are some nuances that authors/educators might need to know or think about if they've never done a workshop before? In this episode, I interview my childhood friend Lada Beatz who is also the youngest brother of AP Muzzika that interviewed in episode 20. I wanted to speak with Lada because I wanted to personally thank him for his contribution to my music as promote him on my platform. Even though we grew up together, he was a lot younger, so I really hung out with older brothers more. We talked about how I found out that he produced beats out of no where, and how I wanted to work him one day. Well the day came in 2019 and we released a full 5 song EP, 4 songs of which he produced and it was a success. Lola Lola has over 200K Youtube streams and became reaction videos for youtubers in Cambodia. We also talked about our musical influences and favorite producers what are long term goals are in music and in life. I hope you guys enjoy this episode and have some good takeaways from it. The film that introduced Marlene Dietrich to America, Josef von Sternberg's The Blue Angel tells the tragic story of a man who gives up everything for love. Emil Jannings is delightfully pompous and uptight as Professor Rath, a schoolteacher charmingly disarmed by Dietrich's seductive cabaret star Lola Lola. The two marry, but unable to change and consumed by jealousy, Rath loses his status, dignity and the woman he loves. Dietrich is captivating as Lola, wearing a seemingly permanent smirk of knowingness - much of the film's action takes place backstage, an environment she controls effortlessly, in which the fewer items of clothing she wears the more uncomfortable Rath grows. José notes a moment in which she ungraciously adjusts her underwear, and who cares who's watching - Mike remarks upon her legs, which at times are posed and filmed to take on a character all of their own. José considers the greatness of Dietrich's collaborations with von Sternberg, of which this was the first, and in particular the way he composes layered, complex imagery here. We discuss the film's characterisation and morality - it's a tragedy, and to some extent its cabaret world is responsible for Rath's decline, but because of his inability to understand and adapt to his new life, rather than an inherent immorality to the setting. Lola, too, isn't simply some succubus; she may find Rath socially useful to marry, given his status as a professor, but moreover her affection for him is apparent. And we consider the film's two-part structure, how it mirrors itself through its two memorable tracking shots in the classroom, the clown character into whom Rath is transformed, and Rath's rooster-like crowing on his wedding day taking on a different significance at the film's climax.
