POPULARITY
In a heartwarming yet informative conversation, Janet Michael sits down with Andrea Ross, the executive director of Warren County Habitat for Humanity, to explore the multifaceted impact of the organization on the local community. The conversation delves into the essence of what Habitat for Humanity stands for and the incredible initiatives they undertake to provide affordable housing while creating robust communities. Janet introduces the discussion by shedding light on the myriad of responsibilities that Andrea and her team juggle daily. Andrea explains that while many associate Habitat for Humanity with building homes—as popularized by public figures like Jimmy Carter—the organization's mission extends far beyond that. "We build affordable housing alongside families that are going to get mortgages," Andrea says, emphasizing the importance of economic development, neighborhood stability, and sweat equity contributed by the families themselves. The conversation reveals that Warren County Habitat for Humanity also undertakes critical home repairs to ensure that residents can live safely in their homes. These repairs go beyond cosmetic changes; they include essential upgrades like installing ramps or fixing dangerous electrical issues. "Our goal is to keep people safe in their homes as long as possible," Andrea asserts. Janet and Andrea further discuss the financial realities and misconceptions about Habitat for Humanity. Drea clarifies that the homes built are not free; the families secure mortgages and invest their labor into building these homes, ultimately contributing to community development. "People assume it's for extremely low-income families, but many don't realize that even middle-income families can qualify," she notes, highlighting the pervasive reach of their aid. Warren County Habitat for Humanity is more than just a housing entity; it is a community builder. Janet points out the genius of community-centric projects like the Osage development, which aims to foster a neighborhood where families can grow together, sharing memories and mutual support. Andrea nostalgically recalls the essence of neighborhoods where kids played together and parents looked out for each other, emphasizing that rebuilding these communities can have significant economic and social benefits. To sustain these efforts, Andrea implores the community to get involved in any capacity they can—be it donating $20, sponsoring a family or attending fundraising events like the Canvas and Cocktails event. "Every little bit helps," she passionately states, reflecting on the impact of even the smallest contributions. The conversation concludes on a note of gratitude, acknowledging the support from local entities such as the Rotary Club and community contractors who make all these efforts possible. With numerous events lined up, including the Hope and Harmony Gospel Fest and their annual gala, there are ample opportunities for community members to engage and contribute. For those interested in keeping up with Habitat for Humanity's activities or getting involved, Andrea encourages visits to their website: https://www.warrencountyhabitat.org/ or Facebook where updates and calls for volunteers are frequently posted. "Our parents shouldn't have to be in places where they don't have heat or water or the basic necessities," Andrea poignantly remarks, encapsulating the heartfelt mission of Warren County Habitat for Humanity: to provide not just houses but homes, filled with warmth, safety, and community spirit.

I'm thrilled to bring you today's guest, Andrea Ross, author of Unnatural Selection: A Memoir of Adoption and Wilderness. Andrea shares how a health crisis lead her outdoors, and how a decade of spending time in the wilderness brought her a feeling of groundedness. We discuss the loneliness that adopted people can face and how we've both seen this theme of reconnecting with ancestral landscapes popping up more and more frequently. I just had to send a picture of my ID via email to confirm who I was. This service was free of charge. Colorado adoptees who want to get their OBC and Report of an Adoption (which is basically like an integrated birth certificate and lists your names pre- and post-adoption, your adoptive parents, your birth parents, the date, time and place of your birth, and the attorney who filed the court documents for the adoption), need to contact the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment or go to their website. There is a form to fill out and a fee to pay for this service. One piece of information regarding sealed adoption information in Colorado is that circa 1990 all of the paper files were collected from the county courthouses to be microfiched and held centrally. In this episode, Sarah and Louise discuss Chapter Five of “The Primal Wound” by Nancy Newton Verrier, and then they talk to Andrea Ross, author of "Natural Selection: A Memoir of Adoption and Wilderness." Adopted at birth, Andrea grew up inhabiting two ecosystems: one was her tangible, adoptive family; the other her birth family, whose mysterious landscape was hidden from her. In her early twenties, while working as a ranger in Grand Canyon National Park, she embarked on a journey to discover where she came from and, ultimately, who she was. After many missteps and dead ends, she uncovered her heartbreaking and inspiring origin story. She began navigating the complicated turns of reuniting with her birth parents and their new families. By way of backcountry travel in the American West, she also came to define her true identity and place in the world not by adopted nor biological parents, but through an expanded concept of family. Here's our affiliate link for Buzzsprout: https://www.buzzsprout.com/?referrer_id=1741800 When you sign up, you get a $20 Amazon Gift card. And if you want to support our show, you can go to our Patreon page here: https://yct.short.gy/auaRqTSupport the show (https://www.patreon.com/themakingofmepodcast?fan_landing=true)

Mark Blevis, from the Just One More Book podcast, interviewed me on our drive into Podcamp Philly about homework. This is a really honest and revealing interview about how we handle homework at our house, and what I see as the value and pitfalls of how homework is used in schools. Since I was the driver, the answers are about as honest and non-scripted as is possible- you hear exactly what was said, uncut and unedited, as two parents, two friends, discuss homework and their children. To give you some background, Mark and his wife Andrea Ross, interview authors and illustrators on their Just One More Book podcast, as well as give their reviews of different children's books. You can even call up and leave a review of your favorite book, and they'll play it on the show. Mark and Andrea are raising two fantastic daughters in Canada, and they always point me in the direction of fanatastic books my kids and I love to share, even though I have boys. The show helps me appreciate the richness of children's literature, and how it can enrich the lives of adults and kids alike.Let me know if you like the style of this show- please send feedback to ldpodcast@gmail.com. If this is interesting, we'll try to do work more unfiltered interviews with parents into the show. Thanks again to Mark for the audio, the idea, and the opportunity to go "unplugged".Click here to download and listen to LD Podcast Unplugged- Mark Blevis and Whitney Hoffman Discuss Homework
I was a traveller again these past few days. Iza la voyageuse ! This episode is a phone conversation between Dave and myself describing my stay in “Ottawa-The-Respectable” to meet Mark Blevis and Andrea Ross of the Just One More Book podcast (- and many, many other podcasts) at the Wild Oat Cafe. I felt like royalty spending time with Lord Blevis and Lady Andrea and their two beautiful and talented daughters. Their 6 yr old and 9 year old both speak French and English and each play the violin and the flute. Plus, they are incredibly smart and vivacious. This show is about my two days in Ottawa. The days were filled with various spheres in my life intercepting one another: history, art, podcasting, food, books, family, friends, life with a big L. Mark and Andrea made me feel part of the family by including me in their lives. I read stories with the girls and helped with French homework. What a delight it was to get to be a part of the everyday organized chaos that represents family life. I also enjoyed the company of Mark and Bob as I was a guest on the Canadian Podcast Buffet and I discussed podcasting at the Ottawa Meetup at the Arrow and Loon bistro with a bunch of rowdy people. Some of the podcasters, I had already seen at the Podcasters Across Borders Conference but for the most part, I did not know anybody. (You have to hear this guys’ story about the band Kiss... I still have cramps from laughing so much. What was that guys’ name? Was it Andy?) I apologize for all the mistakes I made with names in this episode: I am making sins of inexactitude. You will forgive me, as I was on my way to my Dad’s funeral and my head was in another dimension. Thanks again Mark and Andrea! Merci de tout mon coeur. Et bonjour aux deux petites etoiles qui vous accompagnent.
