Ariel Kaye started Parachute 10 years ago with a focus on two things: quality and brand. The home goods and bedding company launched in 2014, as direct-to-consumer brands were starting to flood the marketplace. Like others, it steadily grew its audience and customer base on platforms such as Facebook and Instagram before expanding into physical stores in 2016, making an impression on shoppers with its easy e-commerce set-up and messy-chic lifestyle aesthetic.Today, though the DTC space has evolved, Parachute is still focused on creating a brand people can connect with — both virtually and physically — as consumer shopping habits continue to evolve. In this episode, Kaye chats about why she set out to launch her own company and why brand and storytelling have always played a key role in its success. Do you know what brand your bedsheets are? Probably not. Today's guest Ariel Kaye has been working to change that with Parachute, a DTC bedding and home goods company. Kaye started Parachute in 2013—the hayday of DTC brands. She joins Dom to talk about what it was like building as a solo founder while she's established a well-known brand and expanded beyond bedding. In 2012, Ariel Kaye saw a tantalizing opportunity, but wasn't sure she was the one to seize it. She'd never started a brand and didn't think of herself as an entrepreneur, until she noticed how frustrating it was to buy bed linens in a big box store. Taking inspiration from Warby Parker and Everlane, Ariel quit her day job to launch a brand of DTC luxury sheets, made in Europe but exuding a California vibe, with photos of models lounging in semi-rumpled beds. As a solo founder, Ariel had to figure out everything herself, from manufacturing to supply chains to how to get through to investors. Today, Parachute Home offers a wide range of home goods and has expanded beyond its website to 26 physical stores across the U.S. This episode was produced by Chris Maccini with music by Ramtin Arablouei.Edited by Neva Grant, with research from Katherine Sypher. Our engineer was Josephine Nyounai. You can follow HIBT on Twitter & Instagram, and email us at hibt@id.wondery.com.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Parachute doesn't look or feel anything like a Bed Bath & Beyond, but founder and CEO Ariel Kaye thinks her brand represents the next wave of home goods retailers. The stores are certainly smaller and more curated -- and they are focused much more on the experiential than pure conversion. But Parachute is focused on utilizing its growing store base as a way to bring in more customers and become a household name. Kaye joined Modern Retail to speak about her company's ambitions and strategies. Physical retail plays a big role in this. She spoke live at an event hosted at Parachute's new flagship store in Manhattan. "Last year, we doubled our store footprint," she said. "We went from 12 stores to 24 stores -- this is our 27th that opened last week. And, we just see retail as, like, this is the eyes and ears for the customer." Parachute launched in 2014 with the idea that bedding shouldn't be considered a mindless purchase. "These are aesthetic products that can completely transform a space, and they were they were [treated as] upsell opportunities -- they weren't actual products that any brand was focusing on," Kaye said. The bet seemed to work -- Parachute has grown from its California roots over the last nine years. While the pandemic put a stop to any store openings, the last year was when the company began to put retail expansion into overdrive. But Parachute's stores are as much about community as they are about sales, according to Kaye. "We really do want to just educate people and get people excited about the product," she said. But that does lead to better loyalty; Kaye said, "people that shop in-store first are our best-performing customers." Now is an especially interesting time to be in home goods. With Bed Bath & Beyond's bankruptcy, it leaves other players an opportunity to pounce. But Kaye also sees legacy retailer's demise as a lesson for other founders. "This happens in almost every category and industry," she said. "It's part of the reason why it's so important to continue evolving and growing with your customer and keeping your eye on what the next version of what you're building looks like."
“I'm really passionate about creating beautiful spaces,” says Ariel Kaye, founder of home and lifestyle brand Parachute, which she founded in 2014 after realizing that she and her peers were having trouble finding cozy, quality sheets to furnish their post-college apartments. Since then, Parachute has become an industry disruptor in the home and textile space, evolving into a lifestyle brand which provides essentials for all rooms in the home. In nine years, Parachute has earned $150 million, added 20 brick-and-mortar locations across the U.S. to its direct-to-consumer model, and expanded into the Canadian market with the Hudson's Bay Company. The brand is dedicated to sustainability and climate neutral certification as well as to cultivating wellness and kindness. Come on in and meet Ariel, the founder who is spearheading a comfort movement across North America.Top takeaways from today's episode:You know you have a good idea when you can't think of anything elseAsking for help isn't a weakness–people are happy to give you their timePR is importantLook for consumer feedback when making decisions–especially about product extensionsBeing a founder can be chaotic and lonely. Bed. We spend a third of our lives there, and yet oftentimes, our beds, or what we put on them, become somewhat of an afterthought. Ariel Kaye sought to change that. After spending some years in advertising, Ariel came to a point where she was looking for more excitement, and more of a direct way to connect with people. She had always been passionate about interior design and home goods, going so far as to maintain her own blog on the subject in her free time. As she was pondering a change in career, it dawned on her that there were little to no direct to consumer options for bedding. That is when the idea for Parachute Home was born. Now in its fifth year and about to open the fifth brick and mortar (!), Ariel fondly recalls the early days when she would drive around in her car, delivering orders directly to buyers in Los Angeles. Growth and success have come with their own challenges. Here Ariel discusses entrepreneurial ups and downs, what makes her passionate about her company, and how at the heart of it all it's really about building relationships. Thanks for listening! Ariel Kaye, the founder and CEO of Parachute, tells the precise offline marketing tricks her famed home lifestyle brand uses to great success, what the future of work—between office work and work from home—looks like in the direct-to-consumer space to her mind, and when it comes to the appeal discounting, Kaye offers a word of warning for any company that gets too comfortable going on sale."Discounting is a really slippery slope," she says. "It's just a hard relationship with the customer to back out of, and one that can dilute the brand and tell the customer essentially that they don't ever need to buy full price."Brought to you by Shopify Plus, the enterprise platform powering brands from Allbirds and Gymshark to Staples and Heinz. Known among her friends as the person to call for design tips, Ariel Kaye realized that she had an opportunity to use passion for interior design to start a home goods company. But instead of creating just another brand that sells bed sheets, towels and other products for the home, Ariel wanted to create a company that prioritizes its relationship with customers — in a way she wasn't seeing in the industry. When she launched Parachute, Ariel focused mainly on bedding, emphasizing the value of quality sheets when it comes to getting restful sleep at night.“Sleep is so important. [Bedding] impacts your life in such a phenomenal way,” Ariel says on this episode of The Empowered Challenger. “I knew that bedding was such an opportunity to build a connection and trust within the customer base to literally get in bed with them every night.” Though Ariel was new to entrepreneurship, her background in advertising has helped her see an opportunity to be a guiding light in this industry. She knows how to put customers first, cultivating the kinds of consumer-company relationships that are unique and make her company stand out amongst the rest. Tune in to this episode to hear how she changed career paths to fulfill her dream of challenging the home goods industry from the inside, as well as how she's positioned Parachute to help people create their dream homes. Parachute | Ariel Kaye, Founder & CEO Home used to be "where the heart is." Well, right now, home is where everything is. And no one knows that better than my guest on today's Authentic Avenue. Ariel Kaye is the Founder & CEO of Parachute, a home brand which focuses on bringing comfort to the everyday. I was especially excited to interview Ariel as I've previously featured her first hire, Luke Droulez. Once a bedding brand, Parachute has extended its presence across the entire home -- and along the way, Ariel has similarly stretched her business past the inflexibilities of the past year. Today, we talk about that journey, plus what makes for the next greatest Parachuter. Seeing as it all began with better sleep, I also made sure to ask Ariel what currently keeps her up at night, along with asking for her thoughts of that grand A word I study so closely (including what that particular page in her personal dictionary says). Finally we also touch on the Homes for Dreams initiative, which is Ariel's personal way to give back via mentorship and support Black-owned businesses. Enjoy! Ariel Kaye grew up in Santa Monica, CA, and moved to NY to attend college. After ten years of work experience, Ariel was itching for something more. One day while shopping for sheets, she realized she was surrounded by the same plastic packaging and a bunch of unidentifiable brands, most of which had sheets covered with synthetics and chemicals. So came the “ah ha” moment; most people knew where they bought their sheets but not the brand - there was no brand/customer connection. As someone who had spent her career building that connection in her years in advertising, Ariel knew it was an opportunity she had to take. So, she took some money out of her savings, and flew to Europe in search of a factory. She learned about craftsmanship, got some pricing, and came back home ready to disrupt the industry. She spent a year developing the brand, raising small amounts from friends and family, and launched Parachute in January 2014. In this episode, we discuss her creative process, the importance of the feeling of “home”, how she raised over 40 million, juggling being a momma and business owner as well as Parachute’s next steps. Brian sits down with Ariel Kaye, CEO and founder of Parachute Home to discuss innovation in crisis as a home goods brand.
Americans may have more reason than ever to appreciate the comforts of home and the value of making theirs their own. But even a company like Parachute, a luxury linens and home goods company founded in 2014, is feeling the pinch from the downturn in retail. "Our [physical] retail is about 25% of our business -- but it's a profitable part of our business," the company's founder Ariel Kaye said on the Modern Retail Podcast. "And it's really also how we connect with our customers and build relationships." The brand is accelerating some of the shopping alternatives it had already been planning before the coronavirus pandemic. "We've been excited about buy online, pickup in store, and curbside pickup for a long time, but it was always one of those things that we thought we would get to," Kaye said. "We want to make sure that we can deliver the experience that we want our customers to have no matter where they are."
Here Ariel discusses entrepreneurial ups and downs, what makes her passionate about her company, and how at the heart of it all it’s really about building relationships. Thanks for listening! The term ‘retail store’ isn’t in Ariel Kaye’s vocabulary. The founder and CEO of Parachute Home prefers to use “community centers” when referencing the digital-first bedding and bath brand’s physical locations. In true clicks-to-bricks fashion, Parachute is focused on cultivating its consumer community and providing value outside of just its European-made product. In this interview, Kaye shares how she built Parachute and its cult-like following, while also acknowledging the challenges of running a startup and the isolation that can come with being a sole founder. One weekend while studying abroad in Italy, Ariel Kaye checked into a boutique hotel on the Amalfi Coast and got into bed after a long day of travel. She felt sheets that were softer and more luxurious than anything she had ever experienced. The experience stuck with her. Ariel went on to graduate from NYU before spending ten years at an agency in brand development and advertising. In 2012, she was shopping for bedding and was faced with overpriced monotonous products. So in 2014, with those Amalfi Coast boutique hotel sheets in mind, she launched Parachute, a direct to consumer home essentials brand that offers quality, non-toxic bedding, bath, and table linens. In addition to their e-commerce site, the brand also now has their own hospitality line and in 2016 opened The Parachute Hotel. In this episode, Monica chats with Ariel about how she got started, how she best utilizes the advice and expertise of her investors, the importance of evolving with your customer and the number one thing you need to know about building a team.
