In this episode of Climate Positive, host Gil Jenkins sits down with Mike Berners-Lee—author, professor, and leading expert on sustainability—to explore the central message of his latest book, "A Climate of Truth." In a world spiraling deeper into climate, ecological, and social crises, Mike argues that the most powerful lever we have isn't new technology—it's honesty. The conversation unpacks why truth in politics, media, and business is essential to breaking the deadlock on climate action and building a livable future.Links:Purchase “A Climate of Truth: Why We Need It and How To Get It” (Published April 2025)Mike Berners-Lee on LinkedInMike Berners-Lee WebsiteEpisode recorded March 26, 2025 Email your feedback to Chad, Gil, Hilary, and Guy at climatepositive@hasi.com.
JD Vance whines because Margaret Brennan wanted him to tell the truth. Ben riffs. Curtis Lawrence talks journalism in the post-truth era, when Trump and Vance believe they should be able to say whatever they want. Even if they're lying. Also, the Lu Palmer legacy. And the Abe Peck legacy. And reflections on the disappearance of great neighborhood high schools, like Harlan. It's here: https://linktr.ee/philosophyforourtimesFacts and reason are essential if we are to make progress and create a better world. At least that's how it used to be. But now it seems everyone has their own 'facts'. Our political leaders have 'alternative' facts, but so, it is also claimed, do the liberal elite and the mainstream media. Meanwhile, reason has been derided by many as a typically male bludgeon to deny alternative views. Should we welcome the challenge to facts and reason as a progressive move undermining the authority of traditional Western hierarchies? Or is the undermining of facts and reason a singularly dangerous exercise?Professor of Philosophy at the Open University Sophie-Grace Chappell, Professor of Philosophy at Stockholm University Anandi Hattiangadi and Professor of Philosophy at the New College of the Humanities Simon Blackburn dicuss the changing value of truth in contemporary society. #NatureTruthPower: Política ambiental na era da pós-verdade e das plataformas digitais Bram Büscher Professor and Chair of the Sociology of Development and Change group at Wageningen University How should we share the truth about the environmental crisis? At a moment when even the most basic facts about ecology and the climate face contestation and contempt, environmental advocates are at an impasse. Many have turned to social media and digital technologies to shift the tide. But what if their strategy is not only flawed, but dangerous? In this presentation, Bram Büscher traces how environmental action is transformed through the political economy of digital platforms and the algorithmic feeds that have been instrumental to the rise of post-truth politics. Building on a novel account of post-truth as an expression of power under platform capitalism, he shows how environmental actors mediate between structural forms of platform power and the contingency of environmental issues in particular places. Key in understanding this mediation is a reconfiguration of the relations between nature, truth and power in the 21st century. Its upshot is the need for an environmental politics that radically reignites the art of speaking truth to power. Bio Bram Büscher is Professor and Chair of the Sociology of Development and Change group at Wageningen University and is a visiting professor at the Department of Geography, Environmental Management and Energy Studies at the University of Johannesburg. His research and writing revolve around the political economy of environment and development with specific interests in biodiversity, conservation, new media, digitalization and violence. He developed the concept of Nature 2.0, which focuses on the political economy of new media and its implications for participation in nature conservation. He is the author of Transforming the Frontier: Peace Parks and the Politics of Neoliberal Conservation in Southern Africa (2013), co-author, with Robert Fletcher, of The Conservation Revolution: Radical Ideas for Saving Nature Beyond the Anthropocene (2020) and author of The Truth About Nature: Environmentalism in the Era of Post-Truth Politics and Platform Capitalism (2021). Are we living in a post-truth world? Are we entering, as Barack Obama claims, a crisis of epistemology? Separating truth from the misinformation and disinformation that permeates the internet is no simple task. So what does the spread of falsehoods online mean for democracy and society? Clare Precey and Prof Alan Finlayson discuss all this and more with Dr Sally Broughton Micova and Dr Maria Serban from the University of East Anglia.
Vinita Srivastava is the senior editor of culture and society for The Conversation Canada, and host of the podcast Don't Call Me Resilient, as well as a research associate with the Global Journalism Innovation Lab. This episode, Vinita and Elizabeth chat about post-truth politics and the idea that how people feel about information is sometimes more influential than the actual facts. They discuss differences between the facts contained in a story versus the perspective of who is telling a story, as well as the question of which stories get told, who gets to decide that, and the idea of truth as a product of power. Additional ResourcesElizabeth notes that “post-truth” was Oxford Dictionary's Word of the Year in 2016. This Washington Post story explains why (and also gives a good overview of the term). Elizabeth mentions that a key feature of a post-truth world is that there are no longer “universally recognized arbiters or referees of fact.” This idea comes from David Roberts' 2013 post on Grist. There is also general consensus that Roberts coined the term “post-truth politics” in this earlier post. For a more academic take, philosopher Lee McIntyre wrote a book called Post-Truth. Here's a 2020 interview with him. Also, this article by Matt Carlson looks at how the concept of post-truth politics affects journalism specifically.Elizabeth brings up the concept of the “relativization of facts.” Learn more about that in this article by Sebastien Schindler.Vinita gives an example of how India's press is being muzzled by its government. Reporters Without Borders generates an annual World Press Freedom Index to track where press freedoms are being violated and how. (India ranked 142 of 180 in 2020; Canada was 14th and the U.S. was 44th).Vinita brings up the old adage that journalism is “the first draft of history.” Here's the backstory of that saying.Elizabeth talks about how emotion is a big part of mis and dis information. Check out this study that showed how anger contributes to the spread of misinformation. This was also something Claire Wardle talked about in her episode earlier this season on information disorder. One of the more celebrated aspects of contemporary media is that it seems so much more participatory. In principle, at least, anyone can for example establish a Twitter or a YouTube account, and share their experiences or views with minimal censorious intervention. Some have explained this apparently more participatory media culture with reference to the capacities of technologies. After all, people can participate more easily when so many media functions are collapsed into an internet-enabled device like a smartphone. And yet, for others, this technological explanation is flawed, underplaying longer-term cultural shifts, which these new technologies might more properly be seen as crystallizing. In this episode, we begin with work by thinkers such as Henry Jenkins, who have notably opposed technological explanations for a participatory media culture. For Jenkins, ordinary people's participation in media creation is about more than gadgets, devices or platforms. Rather, it is a momentous cultural shift, towards new and potentially democratising forms of 'collective intelligence' that blur the old distinction between media ‘producers' and ‘audiences'. Jenkins' work has been widely discussed. For some, his model of ‘a convergence culture' overemphasises the individual agency of media participants. Sure, they may be technically freer and more enabled than in the past, but when someone creates or shares a meme, for example, they also partially reproduce or conform to cultural norms. We might also ask: does insisting on ‘culture' bring us back to the same unsustainable technology/culture dichotomy we have challenged in earlier episodes? It is probably difficult to conceive, for example, of the cultural conditions for a so-called post-truth politics without some account of the technical affordances of social media platforms. Thinkers Discussed: Tim Dwyer (Media Convergence); Lev Manovich (Software Takes Command); Ithiel de Sola Pool (Technologies of Freedom: On Free Speech in an Electronic Age); Thomas Friedman (Thank you for Being Late: An Optimist's Guide to Thriving in the Age of Accelerations); Henry Jenkins (Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide); Axel Bruns (Blogs, Wikipedia, Second Life and Beyond: From Production to Produsage); Pierre Lévy (Collective Intelligence: Mankind's Emerging World in Cyberspace); Bernard Stiegler (The Economy of Contribution); Jose Van Dijck (Users Like You? Dr. Bram Büscher is Professor and Chair of the Sociology of Development and Change group at Wageningen University and holds visiting positions at the University of Johannesburg and Stellenbosch University. His research looks at the political economy of environment and development, including in the politics of conservation, energy and extraction, ecotourism, new media, violence and social theory. He is the author of ‘The Truth About Nature. Environmentalism in the Era of Post-Truth Politics and Platform Capitalism and co-author of ‘The Conservation Revolution: Radical Ideas for Saving Nature Beyond the Anthropocene' . He is also a senior editor of the journal Conservation & Society. In this conversation we talk about the interaction between capitalism and conservation, and how the neoliberal fascination with growth influences our relationship with the natural world. We discuss the historical context of this ideology, the supply and demand approach to natural commodities including the green energy transition, and alternative ways we might relate to nature and the economy.Check out more at www.talkingferal.com where you can support the podcast and listen to more episodes.
That we live in an era of 'post truth politics' has become a widespread mantra since the shock of the Brexit vote and the 2016 election of Donald Trump. But Matt Sleat (University of Sheffield) believes this is a mistake: politics is no more 'post truth' now than it has ever been. To understand what has been happening, we need to look elsewhere. Join us on this episode of the Counterintuitive Series on the Governance Podcast.

This week, Twitter created a new policy and applied it to an edited video of Joe Biden that a White House official posted, and of course, President Trump retweeted. The material was not original – it had been tampered with. The video triggered Twitter to create a new policy banning the use of synthetic or manipulated media. In other words, videos that were not original would be in violation.Twitter has faced push-back from activists citing First Amendment rights and the difficulty in identifying what is “fake” versus what isn’t. Their policy reads:“You may not deceptively share synthetic or manipulated media that are likely to cause harm. In addition, we may label Tweets containing synthetic and manipulated media to help people understand their authenticity and to provide additional context.”The criteria Twitter laid out include: 1. Is the content synthetic or manipulated? 2. Is the content shared in a deceptive manner? 3. Is the content likely to impact public safety or cause serious harm? The best form of punishment for creating deceptive messaging, however, is not retweeting in disgust, but silence. According to former Twitter employee Nathan Hubbard, “Hot Twitter tip from someone who worked there: every time you retweet or quote tweet someone you’re angry with, it *helps* them. It disseminates their B.S.! Hell for the ideas you deplore is silence. Have the discipline to give it to them.”We hope you enjoy our discussion of the behavioral science implications of Twitter's new policy. © 2020 Weekly GroovesTim Houlihan: @THoulihanKurt Nelson, PhD: @WhatMotivates LinksTwitter Synthetic and Manipulated Media policy: https://help.twitter.com/en/rules-and-policies/manipulated-mediaPolitico – Biden video first manipulated media label: https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/08/manipulated-media-twitter-biden-video-124116?cid=apn“Misinformation and Its Correction: Continued Influence and Successful Debiasing” by Stephan Lewandowsky, Ullrich K. More at www.philosophytalk.org/shows/post-truth-politics. You've probably heard about the dangerous effects of fake news, and the spread of sensational and targeted falsities. But what about "legitimate" news, one might still ask? Well, do you want the "liberal truth" or the "conservative truth"? Just stick to the facts? What if my "facts" differ from yours? Listen to science? Those scientists are all in someone's pocket, you know. Can we know anything anymore in this age of epistemic nihilism? Have we entered the "post-truth" era? What does this mean for politics, policy, and accountability? The Philosophers don't fake it with Christopher Meyers from CSU Bakersfield, editor of "Journalism Ethics: A Philosophical Approach."
We've seen 'post-truth' politics flourish in the US and Britain - are New Zealand politicians also starting to adopt the tactic of 'alternative facts'?
Our current political climate as being centred around and influenced by emotions and hyperboles as opposed to level-headed factual analysis.

Based on a series of interwoven true stories, the story unfolds as personal and political perspectives shift.Following the brutal murder of a young woman, police suspicion rests on one of her close friends: Francois, a student of political science. Six years later, during the making of a film about the incident, Francois meets Lucie, an actress, and David, criminologist in charge of polygraph examinations. Together, they uncover a series of unanswered questions with dire implications for everyone involved.Written by the globally-acclaimed director, playwright and actor, Robert Lepage and presented by the physically dynamic, boundary-pushing OpticNerve Performance Group, POLYGRAPH has been metamorphosed to reflect the perception of our changing global reality. For more details, visit: https://theatreworks-premier.eventfinda.com.au/2018/polygraph/melbourne/st-kilda-east Theatre First RSS feed: https://audioboom.com/channels/4839371.rssSubscribe, rate and review Theatre First at all good podcatcher apps, including Apple Podcasts (formerly iTunes), Stitcher, Pocket Casts, audioBoom, CastBox.FM, Podbean etc.If you're enjoying Theatre First podcast, please share and tell your friends. Tired of living in a “post-truth” political world where lies become “alternative facts” and social media facilitates the spreading of nonsense faster than ever before? Worried about the way we often find ourselves, and others, in walled-off political and cultural silos, only hearing things that reinforce our pre-existing assumptions? Concerned about the way our brains seem almost wired for irrationality? You’re not alone. And luckily, things are not hopeless! On today's episode, I'll speak with Dr. Gleb Tsipursky, a professor at Ohio State University who specializes in the science of irrational decision making, and is committed to fostering fact-based inquiry and rationality in our daily and political lives. As co-founder of the “Pro-Truth Pledge,” Tsipursky is pushing for a renewed commitment to accuracy, fact-checking and honesty in our daily discourse, whether on social media or in politics. And as Tsipursky explains, there are strategies we can employ to foster the search for truth, short-circuit our own tendencies to irrational thinking, and encourage the same in others. This episode also features my commentary on the “post-truth” claims of conservatives and Republicans, to the effect that “they are the party of civil rights and anti-racism,” in which I explain the historical deception behind such a claim.
