Send us a textWelcome to You Heard it Here Last where we talk about news, you've already heard.https://paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo70cy9?Gen-Con-Preview-BlogYou may not realize it, but GenCon is just around the corner, and while the online chatter wants to turn the tariff issues into doom and gloom for GenCon, I tend to believe it will be as big as ever. Paizo's recent announcement about GenCon events seems to bear out my sentiment.Paizo has announced they are running a Starfinder Society Second Edition event with their new 4-5 hour scenario “Collisions Wake.” They also will be hosting a Pathfinder Society adventure “Under the Eye of Mantis.” Finally, they will be releasing “Battlecry!”, official skirmish rules for leading armies. While I don't play much official Pathfinder, I think this just illustrates that GenCon will be as active as ever, not only with the games you love, but with new things as well.Dust off the credit cards, put on those compression socks, and get to GenCon.Mike, What do you think of Paizo's lineup for GenCon?[Kick to Mike]Christina, What about you?[Kick to Christina]Now onto something a little more heavy hitting.https://www.enworld.org/threads/goodman-games-revives-relationship-with-anti-semitic-publisher-for-new-city-state-kickstarter-updated.713282/In 2020 Judges Guild owner Bob Bledsaw II posted a variety of racist, homophobic and antisemitic statements online. These statements rightfully created a bit of a stir at the time and various game publishers including Bat in the Attic, Frog God Games, Goodman Games, and Drivethru RPG cut all ties with Judges Guild. It should be noted that these statements were all made by Bob Bledsaw II, not by Bob Bledsaw Snr, who co-founded Judges Guild and passed away in 2008.Fast Forward to today. Goodman Games has announced a new version of “City State of the Invincible Overlord” will be coming to crowdfunding this summer. The original version was written by Bob Bledsaw Snr and the license for “City State of the Invincible Overlord” is still owned by Judges Guild. Goodman Games will be publishing this new version through a license with Judges Guild Games.Understandable this has caused a bit of concern.EN World has a great article outlining the original issues and statements along with a current response from Goodman Games.Let's start with Christina on this one, thoughts?[kick to Christina]Mike, is this problematic or is this just business?[kick to Mike]And there you have it, all the news, you've already heard.

Well, officially Kickstarter hadn't started yet. It would be another four years before that happened. However, I ran the Kickstarter in a very similar way. I set different levels and ended up raising over $10,000 to fund the album. Admittedly, that was not all profit. In fact, I had far higher expenses back then because I didn't know how to run a fundraising campaign back then. Nevertheless, it was a huge success and I was able to order 1000 copies of this CD. I think I've printed over 3000 copies of this CD since it was released. But of course, now it is no longer available on CD with me at least. It's only available as a digital download or on an album pin. On June 6, 2005, I released the second episode of the Cat Lovers Podcast to fund this album. Here's a re-release of that podcast episode. 11:56 - CAT MUSIC LOVERS #2: “WHEN KITTY EYES ARE SMILING”, CATS STUCK IN DRAWERS (REBOOT) A tabby cat stuck in the dresser drawers A letter to Torre from Anthony Creech of Celtic Radio Keeping cats indoors Cat Galaxy, All Cats! The Irish song “Wild Rover” was stuck in my head as we started talking about cats. The chorus came around and I started meowing. An idea started growing in my head. What if I parodied a bunch of traditional Irish drinking songs with lyrics all about cats. I wrote my first three songs before the end of October. I then found Ari Koinuma in Austin to help me produce the single. I set up a website at CatDrinkingSongs.com. In December, someone posted the idea to Fark. I had 20,000 website hits in one day and hundreds of comments. I knew this was a great idea. In May of 2005, I launched a podcast to help raise money for a CD of Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers. Thus was born the Cat Lovers Podcast. 10:54 - CAT MUSIC LOVERS #1: “WILD KITTY” AND CATS IN PHYSICS (REBOOT) In honor of the 20 year anniversary of my first cat CD, Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers, I am re-releasing the Cat Lovers Podcast on this feed. Using a unique action-selection system, players produce and deliver cloth while contributing to the construction and decoration of the city's buildings. The game features dynamic scoring phases and strategic planning as you carefully plan out every turn. We enjoyed it then, but how about now? Sometimes we will find those games that are just so basic and fun that we wonder how we missed them back in the day. That is the case for Skyjo, where players aim to have the lowest score by the end of the game. Before narrative arcs, there was Acererak." Dive into Tomb of Horrors Part II and uncover how D&D's most infamous deathtrap shaped the game we love (and sometimes fear). In Part II of the RPGBOT.Podcast's deep dive into Tomb of Horrors, the hosts examine the legendary module not just as a harrowing dungeon crawl, but as a historical artifact that reflects the design philosophies, challenges, and mindset of early Dungeons & Dragons. The discussion unpacks how Tomb of Horrors shaped player expectations, influenced dungeon design, and helped define the adversarial relationship between dungeon masters and players in early editions. The episode also explores how Gary Gygax's approach to game balance, storytelling, and player mortality in Tomb of Horrors laid the groundwork for decades of D&D design choices—both embraced and rejected by later generations. Gygax wanted to challenge players who thought their high-level characters made them invincible. The Real Villain is the Dungeon: Unlike other adventures with monsters and villains, Tomb of Horrors uses the environment itself—full of traps and tricks—as the main antagonist. Acererak is more of a concept than a boss fight. Old-School D&D Prioritized Player Ingenuity: Surviving the module required lateral thinking, note-taking, and paranoia. Modern players used to forgiving mechanics or narrative safety nets can find the module jarringly punishing. The Adversarial DM Was Once the Norm: Tomb of Horrors epitomizes an era where the Dungeon Master was a challenge to be overcome, not a collaborative storyteller. Player Death Was Expected—Even Celebrated: Mortality wasn't a failure, it was part of the game's drama. Character death drove table stories and became a badge of honor for those who survived. Modern Reimaginings Have Softened the Edges: Later versions (3e, 4e, 5e) of the module add story hooks and balanced mechanics but often struggle to retain the tension of the original. There's a tradeoff between accessibility and authenticity. It's a Snapshot of D&D's Origins: Tomb of Horrors is more than a dungeon—it's a reflection of how the earliest games were played, judged, and shared. Studying it offers insight into the roots of the entire hobby. Not for the Faint of Heart—Then or Now: The module remains infamous for a reason. This is Folk Songs & Stories #298 0:39 - Tami Curtis "Keep Our Fire Burning" from Cavort 4:43 - WELCOME TO FOLK SONGS & STORIES I am Marc Gunn. Greetings my friends. Spring has sprung in Atlanta. Everything is covered in the yellowish glow of pollen. Fortunately, I've doubled up on allergy meds this year. It seems to have helped. I haven't lost my voice once this season, knock on wood. Even after a 4 hour show at the Wings Cafe & Tap House on St Patrick's Day. I call that a HUGE win. In the meantime, I've got a little challenge for you. It's simple, it's soulful, and it's rooted in the music we love. It's called the Celtic Spring Challenge, and it's happening all through the month of April. Here's how it works:

Episode Summary In this episode, the RPGBOT hosts take a deep dive into the origin, design, and legacy of the Pokémon Jr. Adventure Game—a tabletop role-playing game released at the height of the Pokémon craze. Despite achieving strong initial sales, the game was ultimately considered a failure by its creators due to issues surrounding pricing, marketing strategy, and corporate oversight. The discussion navigates through the creative process behind the game, its design for a young audience, and how it served as many players' first introduction to TTRPGs. The episode also reflects on broader topics such as missed opportunities in the tabletop space, the tension between business decisions and creative intent, and what lessons developers and publishers can learn today. High sales numbers can mask deeper structural and strategic failures. Overestimation of demand and poor pricing strategies led to the game's early demise. Designers had little control over critical business decisions, including marketing and pricing. The game was meant to be a gateway for young players into the world of TTRPGs. Focus groups revealed that intuitive, non-text-dependent design was crucial for child audiences. Nostalgia plays a powerful role in how the game is remembered today. Internal company dynamics, including sales team competition, had real impacts on product success. Missed opportunities included additional product lines and long-term brand building. The gravity of Changeling: the Lost's first edition corebook is slowly pulling us in... but before we get there, let's make a few stops along the way. Two whole months before the game was officially released at GenCon 2007, there were a number of introductory and ancillary materials that helped drive up interest. This includes the Demo rules summary and quickstart adventure, "Dwelling in Darkness", featured in previews on the White Wolf website, as well as the usual swag: Storyteller's screen, character sheet pad, fancy dice. While we're focusing mostly on the first one today, the others helped to set the aesthetic of the game that was about to launch, If you're looking to dip your toes into 1e, then the quickstart may be just the thing for you, before the headlong plunge.
