Finally, remember: summer is a reminder of what's at stake. Longer days, warmer nights, and the beauty of the natural world that Celtic music has celebrated for centuries. Scientists are united: human activity is changing our climate, and we're already feeling it. But here's what the headlines don't always tell you. We have the tools to fight back. Solar and wind are now the cheapest power sources in history. You can reduce your waste, choose cleaner energy, and push your elected leaders to act. Chris Hanrahan and Tom Lommel of Evil hat have an amazing conversation with John and Dylan about Evil Hat as a company, as a force in the industry, and as just some people having fun in the gaming space. Together they discuss WOTC's move to live service gaming, some exciting items coming to Gencon, and Evil Hat's RPG system FATE is already foretold.

Blending classic conflict simulation with Euro‑style area control, this two‑player design places you with the Spanish defenders doing everything they can to slow an advancing Ottoman siege. The Spanish side isn't trying to win outright so much as hold firm and make every step costly, creating a tense, measured experience where each decision carries real weight. With custom card decks and hidden wooden blocks shaping the flow of play, the game builds a steady, immersive pressure without ever feeling overwhelming. Shifting to a much lighter tone, Rebuilding Chicago and Toy Battle trade battlefield grit for creativity and quick, satisfying play. As the standalone follow‑up to Rebuilding Seattle, Rebuilding Chicago invites up to five players to reshape neighborhoods and guide a growing population after the Great Fire of 1871. It's a warm, engaging tile‑laying puzzle with plenty of room for clever planning. And if you're looking for something breezy to wrap up a game night, Paolo Mori's Toy Battle delivers a delightful 15‑minute burst of abstract strategy. With charming toy‑themed troops and whimsical double‑sided maps like the Volcanic Jungle or City of Clouds, it pairs simple rules with just enough tactical bite to leave everyone smiling. We're truly disappointed that we won't be able to host the Strike tournament at Gen Con this year. It's always a highlight for us, and we'll miss the energy, laughter, and chaos that only Gladiators in an Arena, I mean, a bowl of dice can create. This clever card game from IELLO forces you to play with a reverse hand—meaning everyone else at the table can see your cards, but you are left entirely in the dark about your own exact values. And even with a blind hind, you must predict exactly how many tricks you will win or take a safe bet to limit your points won. For those who believe true friendship is only forged in the fires of mutual betrayal, Renegade Game Studios' Diplomacy: The Golden Blade delivers the ultimate test. This iteration strips away the classic board and map, transforming the legendary grand strategy experience into a fast-paced card game. What it gains in speed, it may not bring home the tension that you feel when playing the original. But be honest, if you love Diplomacy, but don't have five hours, then this might be one to consider. Fruit Island is a casual strategy game by the legendary designer Reiner Knizia that balances accessible mechanics for all ages. Set on a quiet jungle island, players step into the fast-moving shoes of monkeys racing to harvest as much exotic fruit while avoiding a gorilla that wants what you have worked so hard for. If you are enjoying those games where you are going against some in a straight up slugfest, then DC: Brave & Bold by Resurrection Games may be something to check out. Instead of a dice pool with random likes like games before, this is a bag builder with chits and the only thing stopping you from pulling them out is your determination. This one is coming out later this year, but if going to Gen Con, be sure to schedule some time for a demo. Altay: Seafarers expands the horizon of civilization-building, taking the core deck-building and area-control mechanics of Ares Games' Altay: Dawn of Civilization and casting them out into deep, uncharted waters. This expansion introduces a brand-new “Forgotten Sea” board, rules for shipbuilding, and naval combat that injects mobility to the map. It introduces the Waterfolk faction, a magical, ocean-dwelling faction that can manipulate actions and navigate the waves without needing ships at all. If you enjoyed Altay and find it on the table often, be sure to check out this expansion. Send us Fan MailWelcome to You Heard it Here Last where we talk about news you've already heard. We are starting this episode off with one of Mike's favorite settings; Fallout. (You thought I was going to say Star Wars)https://ttrpgfans.com/fallout-rpg-new-vegas-setting-guide/Fallout is getting a new setting guide. Modiphius is launching the “New Vegas Setting Guide” and is hoping to cash in on the Amazon TV series. What's interesting about it is that it looks like we are getting more than just descriptions. The book looks to be chock full of NPCs, Locations, Character Options, and even Equipment. This could be a solid addition to the Fallout game and looks to drop in August…I bet you they will have copies at GenCon.Mike, we start with you, thoughts?Kick to MikeChristina, what about you, are you tempted by this setting guide?Kick to ChristinaNext up we've got a fun one…well at least I think it's fun.https://www.rascal.news/magic-the-gathering-arena-developers-unionize-alleging-forced-ai-use-and-return-to-office-mandates/Workers developing Magic: The Gathering Arena are forming a union called United Wizards of the Coast. They announced their formation under Communications Workers of America on Monday, April 27 and notified Wizards of the Coast and parent company Hasbro of their intent in a public letter. The new union asks to be recognized in their letter, which is strange because WOTC is based out of Renton Washington and the State of Washington requires them to recognize the new union. It also requires them to engage in collective bargaining. Finally, it allows the union to automatically draw funds from employees of the company even if the employees don't want to be a member of the union…The public letter demands protections from layoffs, the ability to keep working from home and not having to come into the office, protections from generative AI use, just to name a few.I'm pretty sure Norma Rae would be rolling over in her fictional grave right now, but I thought this would be a very interesting topic for our segment, mostly because I am betting we have some disagreement on this one.Mike, let's start with you. Thoughts?Kick to MikeChristina, I am expecting fire and brimstone…am I getting flamed here.Kick to ChristinaAnd there you have it, all the news that you've already heard.

Seasons that came and went like they always had. Those songs were written by people who assumed the world would look the same forever. It won't. Not if we don't pay attention. I travel a lot. I play music in fields and forests and festivals. And I notice things. Things that weren't there ten years ago. Things that are gone that used to be. The old songs are worth saving. In this episode of Epic Realms Podcast, I sit down with Toni Winslow-Brill, an accomplished RPG writer, editor, and project manager whose work spans multiple tabletop roleplaying game companies, including Dungeons and Dragons and the Adventurers League. Toni shares her origin story, from discovering a Monster Manual at a garage sale at age nine to attending her first Gen Con just a year later. She reflects on growing up during the Satanic Panic and how that era shaped her relationship with tabletop gaming and creativity. We also explore how her passion for writing influenced her educational path and early career choices. Our conversation dives into Toni's professional journey, including her work outside the gaming industry and how reputation, networking, and consistent delivery opened doors to new opportunities. She offers a candid look at how connections and trust fuel long term success in the RPG space. We spend time unpacking the often unseen side of RPG production. Toni breaks down the full lifecycle of creating a tabletop book, from writing and editing to layout, art coordination, and managing timelines across large creative teams. She gives insight into the realities of project management and what it takes to keep complex projects on track. We also discuss storytelling in adventure design, along with Toni's personal strengths and challenges as both a writer and designer. This episode is a thoughtful and behind the scenes look at the craft, discipline, and passion that drive the tabletop RPG industry. https://www.toniwinslowbrill.com/ Use Our DM's Guild Link - https://www.dmsguild.com/en/?affiliate_id=1089765 Use our Drive thru RPG Link - https://www.drivethrurpg.com/en/?affiliate_id=1089765 Also Check out our Youtube https://www.youtube.com/@epic_realms

Luke Gygax, the son of D&D co-creator Gary Gygax, is collaborating with Wizards of the Coast (WotC) to return the Gygax name to the game’s original setting, Greyhawk. This move was engineered by Dan Ayoub, Dungeons & Dragons’ Head of Franchise, who publicly stated that the game had “lost its way” and that involving popular figures like Luke Gygax is an effort to set it on the “right path”. The collaboration will produce Melf’s Guide to Greyhawk (Melf was Luke Gygax’s original player character) and new adventures set in the world. WotC also announced a full presence at Gary Con to mend rifts with the Gygax family and reinforce their commitment to the community, with Ayoub affirming that retailers and “face-to-face physical play” will remain central to D&D. Catalyst announced a new core product line for BattleTech, including a Core Rulebook, Starter Box, and Core Box, all scheduled to launch at Gen Con. These releases move the game's entry point away from the Succession Wars and firmly into the ilClan era, introducing advanced tech like pulse lasers and Clan tech early on. The Starter Box replaces the older Beginner Box, featuring the Hammerhead and Kontio, while the Core Box replaces A Game of Armored Combat and Clan Invasion with eight mechs from various eras. The new Core Rulebook, built off the Battlemech Manual, incorporates significant changes from recent playtests, such as front-loaded unequal initiative and basing charge damage on the Target Movement Modifier (TMM). Games Workshop announced Warhammer 40,000 11th Edition, slated for a June release, with a goal to bridge the gap between narrative and matched play. The edition refocuses the lore on the Armageddon conflict, pitting Imperial Forces against Orks. A key rules change eliminates fighting over objective circles, replacing them with combat for pieces of terrain. GW will allow current 10th edition codexes to remain usable at launch, and the new edition will feature over 70 new detachments. Other updates include reducing stratagem stacking (one per unit per phase), allowing players to roll charge dice before determining targets, and bringing back Combat Disembarking from transports engaged in melee. Hours before Games Workshop's major announcement, the “biblical horror wargame” Trench Crusade launched its first true starter set, Carcass Front, which is available for pre-order at $129.99 and set for a late July release. The box set contains 16 new plastic miniatures split into two warbands: the mobile, smaller-count Heretic Naval Raiders and the high model count, melee-focused Procession of the Sacred Affliction, a zealous cult who practice religious penance by deliberately inducing leprosy. Carcass Front emphasizes narrative play value, including two full campaigns: The Path to Leviathan, a 2-player narrative, and a map-based campaign designed for 2–8 players to battle over resources. #dnd #battletech #warhammer40k #trenchcrusade Warmachine Frontier: https://www.myminifactory.com/frontier/warmachine-lost-damned-salvation-5274 Definitive HATE on MyMiniFactory: https://www.myminifactory.com/frontier/hate-the-definitive-miniature-collection-5301 Sean Aaberg's Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/cw/seanaaberg Low Life Sign Up: https://www.dungeondegenerates.com/ Warmachine on MyMiniFactory: https://mmf.io/upturned Mantic Companion App: https://companion.manticgames.com/ Use our Referral code: MCTXEE Support us by Shopping at Miniature Market (afilliate link): https://miniature-market.sjv.io/K0yj7n Support Us by Shopping on DTRPG (afilliate link): https://www.drivethrurpg.com?affiliate_id=2081746 Matt’s DriveThruRPG Publications: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/browse.php?author=Matthew%20Robinson https://substack.com/@matthewrobinson3 Chris on social media: https://hyvemynd.itch.io/ Jeremy's Links: http://www.abusecartoons.com/ http://www.rcharvey.com Support Us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/upturnedtable Give us a tip on our livestream: https://streamlabs.com/upturnedtabletop/tip Donate or give us a tip on Paypal: https://www.paypal.com/ncp/payment/2754JZFW2QZU4 Intro song is “Chips” by KokoroNoMe https://kokoronome.bandcamp.com/
Part One: We speak with UW-Parkside librarians Shauna Edson and Heather Spencer about the research they have been doing into an interesting chapter in the school's history: how Parkside was host to Gen Con, the largest convention that gathers together fans of Dungeons and Dragons and other table-top role-playing games. Parkside hosted Gen Con from 1978 to 1984. They are in the midst of creating an oral history project about it and are still in search of first-person accounts from anyone who visited gen con at Parkside during those years. Part Two: best-selling author Rick Riordan, who has created (among other things) the popular Percy Jackson series for young readers. This particular interview concerns his "The Trials of Apollo" series.
Today, Chris, Don, and Jamie gather around the table to reflect on tabletop games of the past and how they've aged over the years. Have these classics matured like a fine wine, growing richer, deeper, and more nuanced with time, or have they gone sour, turning into vinegar? The Founders bring their picks: two games that have stood the test of time, becoming more refined and one that hasn't fared and is now relegated to the back of the kitchen cabinet, only to emerge when we're making deviled eggs. Yes, proper deviled eggs have vinegar in them.

Send us Fan MailWelcome to you heard it hear last, where we talk about news, you've already heard.Well, I guess it was only a matter of time.Deadline announced that Balder's Gate 3 is coming to TV.https://www.enworld.org/threads/there%E2%80%99s-a-baldur%E2%80%99s-gate-tv-show-coming.717787/Deadline Hollywood, the entertainment news site has reported that Balder's Gate 3 is coming to HBO and it is being run by the co-creator of the Last of Us, another TV show adapted from a game.Craig Mazin will “create, write, executive produce and showrun” the TV adaptation. Other executive producers include Hasbro's Gabriel Marano, plus Jacqueline Lesko and Cecil O'Connor.Chris Perkins—who used to work at WotC but now works at Darrington Press—will be acting as a consultant for the show.Larian Studios, which made the bestselling video game, is not involved with the TV show.Ok, So the company that made the game has nothing to do with it. The co-creator of the Last of Us that had an incredible first season and an abysmal second season is putting it together, and Chirs Perkins is climbing back into bed with Hasbro as a consultant. To quote another favorite movie of mine, “It's a trap, get an axe.”Christina what do make of this announcement.[Kick to Christina]Mike, What about you.[Kick to Mike.]Next up we have some news that's a little closer to home, and unlike most of our news, this will be the first time you've heard of it.Leviathan Rising will debut at GenCon 2026. It's got an inventive new mechanic that incorporates the chaos that happens when everything around you is coming apart. And to make it all sweeter, the game is written by our very own Dr. Christina. The game won't be available for sale yet, but you will be able to sign up for games being run and demo'd by Christina herself.Christina, give us some details about the demo's you will be running at GenCon this year.[Kick to Christina]Mike, you've seen the game, what are your thoughts?[Kick to Mike]So, if you are going to GenCon this year look for Leviathan Rising and sign up for a demo from Christina. And that's all the news you've already heard.

After seeing it at Gen Con, the production immediately caught our eye, and the designers hinted at the kind of tough, timing‑sensitive decisions players would face. That promise absolutely shows up in play. Turns are wonderfully clean—place your die, resolve the action, then move your Archon for a bonus action—but the simplicity hides a surprising amount of depth. Positioning is everything. The strongest move in the moment can easily create problems down the line, and the board state shifts just enough each round to keep you second‑guessing your priorities. On top of that, the looming battles add a steady undercurrent of tension. You can't ignore them, even when you're tempted to chase a clever combo elsewhere. Thebai ultimately becomes a race for victory points, and the endgame accelerates fast. Points pour in quickly, so timing your big plays matters just as much as choosing the right ones. It's a sharp, elegant design—easy to teach, but full of those delicious “oh no, that changes everything” moments that make Boards & Dice titles so satisfying. We love historical games that look beyond the familiar battles and instead explore the lesser‑told moments—especially those late‑war pivots where everything hangs by a thread. WunderWaffen fits that niche perfectly. The Allies are closing in on Germany, and the German player is scrambling for a last‑ditch path to victory through experimental research. It's a tense, asymmetrical setup, but not a simple 3‑versus‑1 scenario; only one player can win, so everyone has to keep each other in check, even if that occasionally means helping Germany to prevent someone else from running away with the game. One of the standout mechanics is the turn structure. Each round, you choose two of your three action tokens to use and must hand the third to another player. That single decision point creates delicious pressure—what you keep, what you give away, and who you empower all shape the board in subtle ways. It's a small rule with big strategic consequences. The game moves quickly, and for groups that enjoy negotiation, table talk becomes an extra layer of strategy. Deals, promises, and threats can shift the momentum just as much as the research tracks or battlefield positioning. WunderWaffen ends up being a fast, interactive contest of timing, leverage, and opportunism—exactly the kind of historical “what‑if” experience that keeps us coming back.
