In this fascinating conversation, Charlie shares his profound journey through music and mental health with Jayda. Talking about the incredible highs he's experienced as a DJ, but also the often unspoken harder parts of the industry, including the loneliness and depression he experienced. Diving deeper into his mental health, Charlie talks with Jayda about he was struggling the hardest at some of the most pivotal moments in his career, and how discovering running and yoga transformed his mental health. Jayda hears how the significant impact running had for Charlie, led him to found the urban running collective Run Dem Crew, to encourage more inner city Londoners to take up running. They talk about how running, movement and community are pillars of hope for them, internally and socially, as well as why Charlie works with disadvantaged communities, including in prisons, to share the practice of yoga with them, to help give hope and inner strength to those he feels needs it most. Charlie also expands on why yoga classes and wellness spaces must diversify, so people of all backgrounds can see themselves in the spaces and feel a sense of belonging and connection with wellness practice too. Follow Charlie DarkFollow Jayda GFollow Heres HopingMore on our guestRun Dem CrewHailing from South London, growing up on pirate radio and warehouses parties, Charlie Dark is a stalwart of the underground UK music scene, spinning records and igniting dance floors since the early eighties. From his time on Mo Wax records with Attica Blues in the 90's, a major label deal on Sony Records and the plethora of remixes and productions, DJing and bringing people together has been at the heart of everything he's gone onto achieve. If you ever caught his Blacktronica Parties, sets at the legendary Plastic People or listened to his Worldwide FM or NTS radio shows then you'll know that 'All forms of music in one room the way it used to be' has always been his motto and his record crates run deep. Charlie is also the founder of the urban run collective Run Dem Crew, a Yoga teacher and advocate for mental health and wellness within the music industry. Hosted on Acast. Sub to the PPM Patreon to access the unabridged version of this blue ribbon, gargantuan ep: patreon.com/ParaPowerMapping I think our MHCHAOS Agents primary & secondary source assemblage is coming along nicely.  In this episode, we set the foundation of our ethnographic & forensic recreation of the Columbia Uprisings, illustrating how the Communes were both a significant moment in New Left history, inciting a new militant stage in various NL groups' political development, and also how the Communes triggered the formalization & reprioritization of COINTELPRO, showing how it looms large over the history of American counterintel & counterinsurgency in the past 60 years. We also roll out some proper COINTELPRO & targeting of New Left and Civil Rights mvmt context to effectively situate our half audio-documentary, half Ramparts report Columbia Uprising history. Charlie Dark is an instigator. Whether it's via his band Attica Blues, ICA night Blacktronica, or even his running club Run Dem Crew (which he describes as a "warehouse party that moves"), Dark has an opinion on everything. So it was a pleasure to catch up with someone who has thought long and hard about what we DJs do and how we do it. There are few people in dance music who use their voice as often and as wisely as Dark.

Dossier AS 1937… This was an exploration into the evolution of Charlie Dark, the DJ, Poet, Founder of Run Dem Crew in London, Influencer, leader and yogi.  We sat down for an intimate conversation in his home surrounded by thousands of 12inch and 45 records a collection which he amassed over the decades.  When he's not rescuing dance hall records you'll probably find him running with his crew or teaching Yoga to beginners.  "Running has had a tremendous impact on my life but yoga has had a bigger impact".   I was curious to find out why, so invited him on the show to share his story.  After signed to a major record label with Sony under the moniker Attica Blues and then being dropped Charlie became disillusioned with the music industry and fell into a deep depression.  Running helped Charlie escape from that dark period in his life.   Run Dem Crew was born out a simple desire and mission to keep his friends alive.  Watching from afar over the years I realized there were many layers  to the man.  Charlie had no idea that his small selfless gesture would travel around the world.  Decades early Hip Hop had traveled to London and other parts of the world, now the idea of running crews were popping up around the world.  I grew up in an era when Hip Hop was in its infancy stages, I'm talking about when DJ's would hook up their sound systems to the light poles for power.  I was curios about the rise in popularity of running crews and Charlies is a legend in the game.  But, I was more fascinated with his ability to adapt to the change in the market.    Change is the only constant in life and we refuse to change we cease growing; "I always feel disappointment is the best thing that can happen because it jolts you back to reality".  It is this snap back to reality after being dropped that keeps him humble with a servant attitude.  Before being an influencer was even a thing Charlie was creating relationships with brands so his kids would have a safe warm place to meet.   After tuning in it would me so much to me if you'd rate and write a review on iTunes  --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/derek-oxley/support

He's a member of seminal Mo’ Wax band Attica Blues, and founder of Run Dem Crew, the running community that has been the inspiration for and catalyst of the entire urban running movement that has taken off globally over the last decade. And if you do know Charlie? Then you’ll probably know the bare bones of the story. You’ve probably also read the same or similar interviews with Charlie countless times over - how he started RDC, the Nike years, his towering influence on the scene and so on. So understandably I was pretty keen not to go over the same old ground with Charlie during our time together. And I’m happy to say that what we’ve got here is a different Charlie Dark chat.
