In this fascinating conversation, Charlie shares his profound journey through music and mental health with Jayda. Talking about the incredible highs he's experienced as a DJ, but also the often unspoken harder parts of the industry, including the loneliness and depression he experienced. Diving deeper into his mental health, Charlie talks with Jayda about he was struggling the hardest at some of the most pivotal moments in his career, and how discovering running and yoga transformed his mental health. Jayda hears how the significant impact running had for Charlie, led him to found the urban running collective Run Dem Crew, to encourage more inner city Londoners to take up running. They talk about how running, movement and community are pillars of hope for them, internally and socially, as well as why Charlie works with disadvantaged communities, including in prisons, to share the practice of yoga with them, to help give hope and inner strength to those he feels needs it most. Charlie also expands on why yoga classes and wellness spaces must diversify, so people of all backgrounds can see themselves in the spaces and feel a sense of belonging and connection with wellness practice too. Follow Charlie DarkFollow Jayda GFollow Heres HopingMore on our guestRun Dem CrewHailing from South London, growing up on pirate radio and warehouses parties, Charlie Dark is a stalwart of the underground UK music scene, spinning records and igniting dance floors since the early eighties. From his time on Mo Wax records with Attica Blues in the 90's, a major label deal on Sony Records and the plethora of remixes and productions, DJing and bringing people together has been at the heart of everything he's gone onto achieve. If you ever caught his Blacktronica Parties, sets at the legendary Plastic People or listened to his Worldwide FM or NTS radio shows then you'll know that 'All forms of music in one room the way it used to be' has always been his motto and his record crates run deep. Charlie is also the founder of the urban run collective Run Dem Crew, a Yoga teacher and advocate for mental health and wellness within the music industry. Hosted on Acast. As a DJ, Charlie Dark MBE has traveled the world bringing people together on the dance floor. Getting people to find community through movement has always been his passion, whether as founder of the Urban Poets Society, a mentor for Bikestormz, through Bridge the Gap, and certainly with his London-based running group Run Dem Crew. Run Dem Crew was born out of his burnt-out from the music industry, when on Christmas Day 2006, Charlie decided to go for a run. Fast forward to 2024, and Run Dem Crew continues to transform running by encouraging the vulnerable and outsiders to take up space in running. "It's a sport not just for the professionals, elite or fast runners," as he describes it, "but also for those who run marathons in over five hours, because there, that's where you see the will power to and inner strength."
Buckle up! You're gonna wanna take notes, because in this convo, Stef and Carolyn talk with the indomitable Kayla Jeter and Charlie Dark! This episode was recorded live, from The View Boston, during the Boston Marathon weekend -- exactly one month following the completion of lululemon's Further ultramarathon project. We spoke about how we define ourselves and the importance of separating what we do from who we are. Charlie shared the impact of receiving Great Britain's MBE for his service and long-withstanding impacts on the community, as well as how running and training have evolved since he first entered the sport -- and what still needs to be done looking ahead. Kayla dove into her experience as a Black woman leader in a realm that often challenges accessibility, and the deeply personal significance to her of getting more people excited about health. We are experiencing a movement right now, not a moment. A movement that acknowledges culture and how diversity is what makes culture great. A movement that underscores inclusivity and bridge-building as the way forward. A movement that ultimately elevates, betters, and benefits everyone. We are so grateful to be a small part of it, and we hope you enjoy this convo as much as we did! Show Notes: Start: bios and intro by Boston Community Lead, Sarah Mulvanity 3:50 - overview of convo for the day, focusing on the running journeys of Kayla and Charlie 5:10 - personal intros by each speaker, answering “who are you?” 8:00 - the significance of Charlie receiving Great Britain's “M.B.E.” and what it represents to him personally, as well as its social and historical impact 15:20 - what role did movement have in each of Kayla and Charlie's upbringing 22:30 - Charlie discusses the shift from hedonism to health 30:10 - Kayla's experience as a Black woman, on accessibility and privilege in running 35:25 - deep dive into lululemon Further! 37:40 - each person's goals before, during, and after the ultramarathon (starting with Stef, then Kayla, then Charlie) 54:05 - “if you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go further, go together.” 1:01:00 - start of Q&A Links: Kayla on IG 100 Miles of Summer Charlie on IG Run Dem Crew Further Highlights, vol. 1 and vol. 2 More on Further Find Stef here. Charlie Dark is an instigator. Whether it's via his band Attica Blues, ICA night Blacktronica, or even his running club Run Dem Crew (which he describes as a "warehouse party that moves"), Dark has an opinion on everything. So it was a pleasure to catch up with someone who has thought long and hard about what we DJs do and how we do it. There are few people in dance music who use their voice as often and as wisely as Dark.

This is a behind the scenes chat about the film - This is our London which is available to watch via Youtube via this link: https://youtu.be/jBbV-lP3KNQ When I watched London marathons before I was a marathoner, whilst the leading runners were African. However as a Black British kid growing up in London, I couldn't relate to both British and African running culture. Sport was never a priority in my household, and I wasn't exposed to running clubs, or cross country as a youth. I couldn't relate to the runners from the elites, or to the masses, based on the people that I saw in the area I lived and existed within. However the London marathon was a celebration of the city I lived in. Often it is easy to live in a place but to not know it. The marathon seemed to provide a way to open up and show a space that was often closed off. For example Canary Wharf I remember going there as kid and it was fairly underdeveloped, and it's a world apart from the place we see today. Watching the London marathon on the BBC brought out the best of Londoners and the best of London. I was drawn to explore the unseen parts of my city that I called home. The marathon seemed to unite a group of people that in other days just passed each other like ships in the night. The London marathon means a lot to me because it was my first experience of it I ran 4:55. I earned a GFA 2.56 and last Sunday I ran 3:00:06. So it has taken me on a massive journey revealing what I'm capable of, which I've learnt through running. This translates into other areas of our life's and I hope that it inspires other people to take part. The film aims to bridge the gap between the existing running community and encouraging new people into marathon running. It tells the stories of runners based internationally, as they share their honest, at times funny and truly unfiltered thoughts about what running the 2021 London marathon means to them. Their stories create a powerful narrative showing what truly connects the runners behind the thousands of anonymous runners. Their collective voices show what London, and what it's marathon means to them, and ultimately what it represents to us. I hope that after watching the film that it inspires people to apply to run the 2022 London marathon. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is our London, shares the stories of runners based internationally, as they share their honest, at times funny and truly unfiltered thoughts about what running the 2021 London marathon means to them. There's a saying. If you want to go fast, go alone; but if you want to go far, go together. For DJ and poet Charlie Dark, these are words to live by. In 2007 Charlie founded Run Dem Crew - a running crew for people who don't typically consider themselves runners. It's been a lifeline for its members, who've not only found fitness but made lifelong friends. In just over 10 years, the collective that Charlie started to fight his way through depression, has members from all walks of life and has inspired crews and offshoot collectives in cities all over the world. You can stream the podcast below or subscribe through Apple Podcasts herefrom Spotify here or search for The Top 5 Records Podcast through your preferred podcast provider. Charlie Dark is a good friend of mine and a one time business partner when we founded FUN DMC together. Charlie has led an extremely interesting professional life and we delve into some of that here. Having started as a DJ he was singed to the Mo Wax label as part of group Attica Blues before going on to sign a major label deal with Sony that did not work out at planned. Disillusioned with the music biz he threw himself into self care and off the back started Run Dem Crew a running community which now meets weekly and has tons of members ranging from casual runners to those who run marathons around the globe. It is this ability of bringing people together than I think is Charlie's real strength. He is a vocal supporter of those around him always pushing them to achieve through all manor of initiatives including his latest project Run Dem Radio which will be taking to the airwaves in the upcoming weeks. #REPOST: This week on Hurdle, I’m reposting five back-to-back episodes featuring Black guests, hoping to amplify their voices and continue my commitment of being a better ally. Today's episode was originally recorded in November 2019. Spoiler alert: This Is one of my favorite live episodes to date. When Charlie Dark (@daddydarkrdc) started running, he was in a bad place. Dropped by his record label, the DJ and poet was teaching a poetry and creative writing class in east London and had recently lost a friend of his. It began under the cover of darkness. Between 1 and 3 a.m., he’d leave the recording studio in the early hours of the morning and run home. “I didn’t want anyone to see me. I didn’t need anyone to watch me fail.” Within a year’s time, he had shared his love for the sport with friends. Every Friday night, they’d link up to run a single mile. Soon after this #hurdlemoment, Run Dem Crew was born. Currently at more than 500 strong, Dark says that co-founding the collective gave him new purpose. “We’re changing lives.” In today's episode — recorded live at the Lululemon Re:Pair Lab — we’re chatting everything from how to defeat imposter syndrome to the highs and lows of conquering the marathon distance. Plus, following your true passion and the power of running culture. “Call me G,” was the first thing Gilad Jacobs told me when I met him, and that’s pretty indicative of the kind of guy he is. Personable. Friendly. Also — hardworking. For almost eight years now, Jacobs has been the CEO of Boston-based recovery favorite NormaTec — best known for their Pulse 2.0 Recovery system, which hooks up to the big compression boots you see everywhere from NFL sidelines to the local physical therapist’s office. In episode 80, he talks to me about his late mother — an MD and bio engineer who started the company — and the special relationship they had. He gets honest about the #hurdlemoment of losing her, and how that changed his life forever both personally and professionally. We also touch on things like navigating being “not-so popular,” and — of course — the benefits of compression. Poet Daniel Cockrill invites Poet and Playwright Nick Makoha round his house for a chat. During this chat they explore the visceral space between fact and fiction to reveal certain truths that can’t necessarily be explained by these other fields. They also attempt to answer the Poet Waffle Big Question: Where do problems come from? Topics covered include: My Shed, Educational Projects, Charlie Dark, Malika Booker, Roger Robinson, Jacob Sam La Rose, Polarbear, Inua Ellams, Humour, How Humour Can Help You Understand The World and How It Can Make The World Better, Writing, Learning To Be A Poet, Mastering Your Craft, What Words Can Do, Building A Universe Out Of Words, Encouraging Imagination and Creativity, and Playing Through The Problems.
In 2007, Charlie Dark founded Run Dem Crew in South London when he found running during a dark period of his life. His idea was to bring together unique individuals together for interesting conversations while also hitting the pavement, with a strong focus on all things mental health and community. 12 years later that crew has turned into a 500-person community in London and an international running movement landing him the position as the first global run ambassador Lululemon. Charlie chats to Chloe Wilde about everything from imposter syndrome, the importance of destigmatizing mental health, the power of meditation and why we should view running a race as a celebration above all else
We talk with Charlie Dark, founder of Run Dem Crew, about the evolution of run crews, the importance of a collective, and the mindfulness movement in London running.
This was an exploration into the evolution of Charlie Dark, the DJ, Poet, Founder of Run Dem Crew in London, Influencer, leader and yogi. We sat down for an intimate conversation in his home surrounded by thousands of 12inch and 45 records a collection which he amassed over the decades. When he's not rescuing dance hall records you'll probably find him running with his crew or teaching Yoga to beginners. "Running has had a tremendous impact on my life but yoga has had a bigger impact". I was curious to find out why, so invited him on the show to share his story. After signed to a major record label with Sony under the moniker Attica Blues and then being dropped Charlie became disillusioned with the music industry and fell into a deep depression. Running helped Charlie escape from that dark period in his life. Run Dem Crew was born out a simple desire and mission to keep his friends alive. Watching from afar over the years I realized there were many layers to the man. Charlie had no idea that his small selfless gesture would travel around the world. Decades early Hip Hop had traveled to London and other parts of the world, now the idea of running crews were popping up around the world. I grew up in an era when Hip Hop was in its infancy stages, I'm talking about when DJ's would hook up their sound systems to the light poles for power. I was curios about the rise in popularity of running crews and Charlies is a legend in the game. But, I was more fascinated with his ability to adapt to the change in the market. Change is the only constant in life and we refuse to change we cease growing; "I always feel disappointment is the best thing that can happen because it jolts you back to reality". It is this snap back to reality after being dropped that keeps him humble with a servant attitude. Before being an influencer was even a thing Charlie was creating relationships with brands so his kids would have a safe warm place to meet. After tuning in it would me so much to me if you'd rate and write a review on iTunes --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/derek-oxley/support

Today on the show we have Nathaniel Cole, co-founder of London based Swim Dem Crew. Swim Dem are an inner-city swim club who believe in the power of community, and who found their roots and mentorship in Charlie Dark's Run Dem Crew. As with Charlie's running crew, Nathaniel and his co-founders are providing a no pressure community based space, focused around a movement practice that allows everyone to simply be themselves. What we hear in this podcast is the reoccurring theme of Nathaniel's long held desire of wanting to help people firstly when he talks to us about all things Swim Dem Crew, and secondly when he tells us about his charity work with youth males exploring their masculinity. It's easy to see parallel's between the Swim Dem and Run Dem Crews, and clearly between Nathaniel and Charlie. The world certainly benefits from both of these people and their community creations.
This weeks episode is something a little different. Charlie Dark turns the mics on the founders of weMove, James & Chris. They talk about their previous lives running record labels and fashion brands to what made them decide to turn their backs and pursue something that back then was happening on the fringes and is now becoming more in the spotlight, that thing being movement. Connecting a community that is looking for a new way to express themselves without being labelled as one thing or another. Charlie is always a great host and conversationalist, inquisitive and passionate about what makes people tick Enjoy the show.
So each week, as I’m sure you know I chat to people about their lives and interactions with London, Culture and Creativity and this weeks chat is with Charlie Dark of London’s legendary movement, Run Dem Crew! Charlie has literally run through London’s hip hop scene.. all the way from a family friends Christmas in the New York in 81, though Soho in the early 90’s, TV shows, record labels, relased music and an accumlination of all his cultural skills to help him though the hard times and help start Run Dem Crew to take on London and the worlds running teams. A great convo wth Charlie, his interactions with cultural icons, stories from the UK and world wide Hip Hop archives and a mindset fuled by that passion, dope Charlie, thank you. This is F24.. Enjoy!
Charlie Dark is becoming a movement polyglot. Taking his message of connectivity and inclusivity to communities who would never have given a second look to ideas out of their line of sight. Founder of Run Dem Crew, one of the instigators of the running crew phenomenon which took running off the track and to the streets, turning DJs, creatives and the youth to the joy of 'pushing the earth down with your feet'. Now Charlie is taking to yoga and climbing with the same idea. As with all Charlie's movements, this isn't about idolising others this is about realising the individuals who come together. Charlie crystalizes the belief that together weMove.
Former DJ and producer turned poet and creative writing teacher, Charlie Dark, set up Run Dem Crew in 2007, drawing on his life experiences to establish a thriving running crew in the heart of London. Join George Lamb as he speaks to Charlie about finding joy in treading the tarmac, and how 90s warehouse culture inspired him to build stronger communities in an increasingly divided city.
Full episode info and Show Notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com For episode 036, I headed up to London to meet the inspirational Charlie Dark: runner, musician, DJ, thinker, leader, teacher, speaker, poet and much more. He's a member of seminal Mo’ Wax band Attica Blues, and founder of Run Dem Crew, the running community that has been the inspiration for and catalyst of the entire urban running movement that has taken off globally over the last decade. And if you do know Charlie? Then you’ll probably know the bare bones of the story. You’ve probably also read the same or similar interviews with Charlie countless times over - how he started RDC, the Nike years, his towering influence on the scene and so on. So understandably I was pretty keen not to go over the same old ground with Charlie during our time together. And I’m happy to say that what we’ve got here is a different Charlie Dark chat. One in which we cover plenty of old ground, sure, but also found out where Charlie is now, and what his plans are for the future. As you might expect from this legendary wisdom-dropper, there are plenty of though-provokers to get your head around in this one. I really enjoyed this one. Big thanks to Charlie for coming on the podcast, opening up and getting right into the spirt of the Looking Sideways podcast. Hope you all enjoy it. As ever thanks to Scott Nixon (www.scottnixon.co.uk) for post-production help and Matt Ward (www.linguistine.com) for the theme tune.
