In this fascinating conversation, Charlie shares his profound journey through music and mental health with Jayda. Talking about the incredible highs he's experienced as a DJ, but also the often unspoken harder parts of the industry, including the loneliness and depression he experienced. Diving deeper into his mental health, Charlie talks with Jayda about he was struggling the hardest at some of the most pivotal moments in his career, and how discovering running and yoga transformed his mental health. Jayda hears how the significant impact running had for Charlie, led him to found the urban running collective Run Dem Crew, to encourage more inner city Londoners to take up running. They talk about how running, movement and community are pillars of hope for them, internally and socially, as well as why Charlie works with disadvantaged communities, including in prisons, to share the practice of yoga with them, to help give hope and inner strength to those he feels needs it most. Charlie also expands on why yoga classes and wellness spaces must diversify, so people of all backgrounds can see themselves in the spaces and feel a sense of belonging and connection with wellness practice too. Follow Charlie DarkFollow Jayda GFollow Heres HopingMore on our guestRun Dem CrewHailing from South London, growing up on pirate radio and warehouses parties, Charlie Dark is a stalwart of the underground UK music scene, spinning records and igniting dance floors since the early eighties. From his time on Mo Wax records with Attica Blues in the 90's, a major label deal on Sony Records and the plethora of remixes and productions, DJing and bringing people together has been at the heart of everything he's gone onto achieve. If you ever caught his Blacktronica Parties, sets at the legendary Plastic People or listened to his Worldwide FM or NTS radio shows then you'll know that 'All forms of music in one room the way it used to be' has always been his motto and his record crates run deep. Charlie is also the founder of the urban run collective Run Dem Crew, a Yoga teacher and advocate for mental health and wellness within the music industry. Hosted on Acast. For the final episiode in this first series of Unknown Exclusives, Unknown.FM proudly presents DJ Junk, a UK-based DJ/Producer that has been a massive influence on many of the Unknown.FM djs since way back in the early 90's. Dj'ing since 1988 and producing since 1992, DJ Junk started producing rave / jungle 12"'s in 1992 and released a series of white labels called 'Junk 001', 002, 003 and so on up to volume 12. Since 1992 he has released 71 vinyl releases under various names / genres and labels. He also distributed a series of rave mix tapes starting in 1991 known as 'Junk Hardcore'. DJ Junk's dj style avoids the well-known tunes and goes for those unknown, under-rated gems. In 1994 he produced a series of house / hard house 12"s under the artist name of 'Blister Sisters' and ran a house label called 'Completely Suitable'. This ran from 1994 to 1997 and had 14 releases, some of which were white labels. In the early 90's he produced a series of tapes called 'Breakbeat Mix' . These were mixes of hip hop breakbeats and other samples. Produced on a sampler rather than turntables they were like very long tracks rather than dj mixes. In 1996 the best parts of the 'Breakbeat Mixes' were compiled on a vinyl album called ‘Breaker Breaks Volume One'. This album also had sections of film samples and hip hop noises for scratch DJ's. The label this was released on was known as ‘Second To None' which was the B-Boy crew of which DJ Junk was a member and so used that name for the new label. The ‘Breaker Breaks' albums were followed with other volumes to reach volume 6. The ‘Second To None' label which was ran by DJ Junk also had other releases – ‘B-Boy Anthems Vol 1-6' , ‘Weapons Of Mass Deckstruction Vol 1-4', ‘Prone Breaks', ‘Ultimate B-Boy Funk' , ‘Trouble With Funk' plus several other LP's and 12”'s. DJ Junk has also had tracks released on other labels including, ‘Ministry Of Sound' , ‘MZEE', ‘Bomb' , ‘Pepper', ‘Mo Wax', ‘Ozone', 'Telstar', 'Spandangle Selection' , 'NMRK' . 'MPS', 'Vinyl Fanatiks', 'Funkin' Pussy', 'Meditator Music', ‘Rave Radio'. DJ Junk has D.J.ed all over the UK and Europe since the early 1990's and regularly plays at b-boy events such as the dirty 30's at UK B-Boy Championships and IBE Holland, Breaking Convention, Vile Style in Bournemouth, Breakfest, plus many clubs. He has played at rave/jungle events – Calling The Hardcore , Remixed, WDA ,Up The Anti plus others as well as various soul and disco events. For this mix DJ Junk has put together 2 hours of early 90's breakbeat which is has mixed seamlessly in his formiddable style.

Открывает программу новейший промо-трек культового проекта UNKLE, который вскоре выйдет в рамках нового альбома The Road Part II - Lost Highway на лейбле идеолога группы Джеймса Лавеля Songs For The Def. The Man from Mo'Wax, Full episode info and Show Notes: www.wearelookingsideways.com For episode 036, I headed up to London to meet the inspirational Charlie Dark: runner, musician, DJ, thinker, leader, teacher, speaker, poet and much more. He's a member of seminal Mo’ Wax band Attica Blues, and founder of Run Dem Crew, the running community that has been the inspiration for and catalyst of the entire urban running movement that has taken off globally over the last decade. And if you do know Charlie? Then you’ll probably know the bare bones of the story. You’ve probably also read the same or similar interviews with Charlie countless times over - how he started RDC, the Nike years, his towering influence on the scene and so on. So understandably I was pretty keen not to go over the same old ground with Charlie during our time together. And I’m happy to say that what we’ve got here is a different Charlie Dark chat. One in which we cover plenty of old ground, sure, but also found out where Charlie is now, and what his plans are for the future. As you might expect from this legendary wisdom-dropper, there are plenty of though-provokers to get your head around in this one. I really enjoyed this one. Big thanks to Charlie for coming on the podcast, opening up and getting right into the spirt of the Looking Sideways podcast. Hope you all enjoy it. As ever thanks to Scott Nixon (www.scottnixon.co.uk) for post-production help and Matt Ward (www.linguistine.com) for the theme tune.

The Man — « Rich Friends »    (La voix des Bangles, tout simplement! Kaleena Zanders) — «  Work!

Tranquility Bass was the stage name of Michael Adam Kandel,(1967/1968 – May 17, 2015) an American musician whose music has been variously categorized as ambient house, trip hop, and funk rock. He released various singles during the 1990s, followed by his first full-length album, Let The Freak Flag Fly, in 1997 on Astralwerks. Kandel was born and raised in Chicago. He learned to play guitar and keyboards at age 12. By the age of 15 he had begun to record experimental electronic music in his bedroom. Kandel attended the Chicago Academy for the Arts, after which he moved to Los Angeles in the early 1990s to attend CalArts. It was there that he met Tom Chasteen, with whom he started the Exist Dance label in 1991 The two released several singles, including some as Tranquility Bass, later that year. In 1993, Kandel released the single "They Came in Peace", which has been described as an ambient-house classic and appeared on the Mo' Wax compilation album Headz the following year.[4] After the duo released this and a few other singles, including two songs that appeared on the FFRR compilation album, California Dreaming in 1994, Chasteen left Tranquility Bass and relocated to Tucson.[6] Tranquility Bass's touring bassist, Matt Lux, is also the bassist for Chicago-based band Isotope 217. In 1994, after Chasteen's departure, Kandel joined Tyler Vlaovich to record an album on Lopez Island in Washington.[8] More than two years later, the album was released as Let the Freak Flag Fly on Astralwerks Records. Kandel sometimes ceased talking to people, or from using his voice, for two or three days on end during the recording process.[8] According to Billboard, the album led to Kandel developing "a cult following that spans several genres beyond the dance realm." The Los Angeles Times gave the album a rating of three stars (out of four) and described it as "the electronic progeny of acid rock." IIt was also reviewed favorably by Greg Kot, who described it as "a grand journey through nearly a century of recorded music, a densely layered montage of electronic manipulations and live instruments made under conditions that were certainly unusual."[11] The album contained the song "We All Want To Be Free", made more popular by its airplay on MTV's Amp. Heartbreaks & Hallelujahs[edit] After a long hiatus from studio recording and rumors of drug abuse, Kandel returned in 2012 with a sophomore effort entitled Heartbreaks & Hallelujahs. The album was completed on March 21, 2002. Kandel reportedly tried to have the album released on multiple labels, only to have each of them fold after he sent it to them. The album ended up being released on Exist Dance, although it is readily available in digital format on Amazon MP3 and iTunes. The album is mostly new material with the exception of yet another remix of an early days single, "Mike's House". Kandel seemed to try to get away from the idea of being an electronic musician (although some of the album still has electronics), with a dose of various types of rock such as funk rock and surf rock.

Where is your favorite spot? A: This is the toughest question somebody can ask me as I've been traveling the world ever since I was three weeks old. There is no particular spot that I would call my absolute favorite, there are just tooo many I could think of. If there was a list South Africa would be really high on it, same as Los Angeles. This year I fell in love with Mallorca, where - funny enough - I as a German have been for the first time. Q: Talking about your mix: what do these tracks mean to you? A: All these tracks were game changers in my musical evolution. I still play most of them from time to time. Maybe not original Nuttah or that Prodigy joint but the other ones for sure. It took me quite a while to fully adapt house music to be my main focus as a DJ, that is why I chose some tracks from the early 90s and some from 1999. When I first started listening to electronic music, everything happening in the UK between 1993-1996 had a huge impact on me, labels like Ninja Tunes and Mo Wax for example but also Jungle and all sorts of break beats. The second major influence was French House music. Super Discount and Motorbass' Pansouls album were and still are everything for me. After that came digging into American house music and its originators in the early 2000´s following a short stop soaking up everything happening in West London. I'm trying to showcase all those influences in this mix. Some tracks might be the obvious choice, but when you grow up in a little town in Germany without pirate radio stations, local record stores and DJ heroes, that's how you first start to find your way into it. Q: There´s a new TILL VON SEIN-EP upcoming on Suol in January I heard? What else is planned for the next year? A) I’ve been working on this EP since summer and to me it has a solid throwback vibe, back to when there were records with four dope tracks. I always loved buying a diverse 12 inch with more than just that typical A side banger, so this was my goal behind this EP. I’m really happy with the way it turned out. I just sent off three remixes, one for a new label run by Steve Mill which looks really promising, one for friends of mine from Panama for whom I played three times in the past and I'm super stoked to see them starting a label and getting more and more recognition, and the third one is for an old buddy of mine called Malente and his label No Brainer. For 2017 I'm working on a new EP for Pets recordings, Catz n Dogz Label and two split EPs, one with Kid Enigma and one with Meggy.

Welcome to another installment of the DJ Tomas Early Mix Series. After about 15 years of promises and procrastination I've finally been able to digitize this mixtape. "Love For Earth Volume 2: Indian Summer Jazz" was one of my most popular mixes, or so I've been told over the years. Interestingly it ended up in a lot car tapedecks in Los Angeles and elsewhere and probably soundtracked number of comedown drives from desert raves. The title references California's extended late summer and early fall bouts with bucolic weather. Musically it represents a peak in the trip-hop/downtempo electronic period in the mid-90s when nary a week passed without a clutch new of must-have singles being released from labels like Mo'Wax, Ninja Tune, Cup of Tea, Talking Loud and dozens of smaller imprints. This mix was definitely enjoyable to do and to hear the reaction it produced. I'm happy to offer it again after all these years. One caveat: this is a direct cassette-to-digital transfer, without any mastering (I'm lazy), so the sound is accordingly lo-fi. Song-wise, though, it's pretty stellar! Cover design by Guy from Funk Pistol, Hawaii.

Ana's birthday has come and gone - a more festive time out than she'd thought it would be (still I was hoping for more but as these things go I am always more optimistic than is reasonable). The night began with a re-visit to the Tea Lounge in Park Slope, a gathering and launch off point for the various parties who I had hoped would congregate there before setting off to trip the light retrotastic at the Culture Club. Such was not to be the case - as ominously a Fleetwood Mac CD (Greatest Hits, I do believe) had gotten stuck in an infinite loop and everyone was subjected to two hours of breathless early 80's pap. Due to time constraints Fleetwood Mac will not be represented in this podcast. When complaints were lodged with the staff the music quickly got shuffled around to the likes of Modest Mouse - here freely intrepreted in a nice piece by World Famous Audio Hacker. The highlight of the first phase of the night was the presentation of the video compilation done by our friends back in Portland. A lot of good memories and sad nostalgia got built up and released by this singularly awesome reminiscence. This kernal of solid awesome is represented here by our friends doing a birthday ballad to Ana, a fine little track that is a bit more coherent than anything I've ever done. The fun continued with a surprise visit from super-student Tomohiro. Luckily enough he is a conspicous character, and was quickly besieged by the family of English teachers and their various lessons of puppy and "hanging in there". Tomo is here represented by Hifana a not to be missed breakbeat group that I have featured before. It was due to Tomo that I myself was introduced to their fiery tempo of heavy breaks. Be sure to check out their incredible video over here. When we finally did set out it, wasn't to any high-falutin' Manhattan culture hole, but a half-block down to the Union Hall! A Brooklyn Birthday entirely contained in the space of a football field. Upon entry to the Home of the Park Slope Famous Bocci Ball Courts, we got a the first taste of the retro back pedalling that is a bar playing the Clash's Rock the Casbah. Here to keep the feeling alive I've replaced the original with the mildly modified Rythm Scholars version. The downstairs dance floor was awash with the solid dance tracks of the obscure, which unfortunately I could not find representatives for, such as a track from the Mo'Wax label I couldn't place but know I've heard before, a track from Hot Butter, and many more. Great Fun was had by all and is here represented Blondie's "Heart of Glass", The Beastie Boys "So Whatcha Want", a clip from Grant Stetski, and Belle and Sebastian's "We are the Sleepyheads". Incredibley of those four songs - three were played on the dance floor but the one that was not is actually the most dance dance song of them all. To clarify, yes I shook it like I made it to the intermitentment beats of Belle and Sebastian. Rounding this all out is a bit of primal scream therapy from Aa the tribal electro punk outfit from (drum roll) Brooklyn. Nothing like a soul shattering mournful yelp to express the rightful existential quagmire that are birthdays. Thanks for having another year on Earth with me Babe - we'll try our best to keep this all together. Thanks also to all the well wishers, visitors, guests, dancers, and contributers who helped make it a good night out. 1. World Famous Audio Hacker - Dashboard 2.0 Retouch22.
