Today's poem is hoop snake by Rebecca Wee. The Slowdown is currently taking a break. We'll be back soon with new episodes from a new host. This week, we're going back into the archive to revisit Ada Limón's time as host. Today's episode was originally released on October 21, 2022. In this episode, former host Ada Limón writes… “A few days ago, a friend told me that Spanish Moss, a moss I love, the way it droops down over the water oaks like mint-colored lace draping the world in a gauzy dappled light, was actually killing the trees. But this myth is gratefully not true. We investigated further, and it turns out Spanish moss gets no nutrients from the trees, but rather takes the moisture and sunlight out of the air. It's also not a moss. It's a bromeliad. It's also not Spanish, but native to the U.S. and Mexico and South America. I like that I can still love Spanish moss and can still think of those beautiful fabric-like threads floating through the canopy as benevolent. I want all the good myths to be true. Because I want to believe in wonder.” Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. Every donation makes a difference: https://tinyurl.com/rjm4synp
You've probably seen it if you've ever driven down a sleepy road in the American South—maybe through Georgia, Louisiana, or northern Florida. Long, ghostly strands of gray-green threads dangle from oak branches like forgotten tinsel after a storm. Spanish moss sways in the breeze with a rhythm all its own, creating a scene that's equal parts romantic and haunting. It's one of those things you notice, even if you don't know what it is. But what exactly is Spanish moss? Is it alive? Is it harmful to trees? Why is it called “Spanish” moss when it has nothing to do with Spain—and it certainly doesn't look like moss as we know it? As it turns out, this mysterious plant has a backstory as intriguing as its appearance. From colonial rivalry to folk tales, from mattresses to medicine, Spanish moss has been tangled into people's lives for centuries. Let's pull on one of those gray strands and see where the story takes us... For this episode of Processa Talks, we have the pleasure of hosting Artist Diana Eusebio and Dr. Omaris Z. Zamora where they discuss Eusebio's solo exhibition, Alchemy: Pigments of Probability, opening at the Art and Culture center in Hollywood, Florida. Alchemy: Pigments of Probability, is a culmination of years of extensive research on the indigenous art of alchemizing plants and natural materials into color. In this specific body of work, she features seven different natural materials native to Miami, Peru, and the Dominican Republic, such as Cochineal, Avocados, Bija (Annatto), Spanish Moss, Indigo, Jagua, and Palo de Campeche (Logwood), often sourcing them directly from the landscape. The imagery in the works is digitally printed onto fabric and combine both archival photos of her past experiences with family and landscape, and imagined photos created with AI to reconstruct images of her family's history in the Dominican Republic and Peru. Combining traditional practices and modern technologies, Diana explores collective memory processes, constructing familiar archives and textile traditions reflective of her ancestral past and family's future legacy. The multi-layered process of creating these compelling new pieces is reflective of the complexities of recovering and recording Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean histories. The exhibition brochure includes a text by Dr. Omaris Z. Zamora. -------------- About Diana Eusebio: Diana Eusebio is a Peruvian-Dominican multidisciplinary artist based in Miami. Her artistic practice is centered on color and its cultural significance. She researches natural dyed textiles from Indigenous Latin American and Afro-Caribbean traditions, recognizing their connection to nature and their role as carriers of ancestral wisdom. Eusebio's fusion of ancestral and modern techniques, including dyeing and photography, contributes to contemporary cultural preservation and celebrates the rich heritage and Pre-Columbian knowledge embedded within these communities. Her work is a powerful testament to the enduring cultural tapestry of these regions. IG: @dianaeusebiostudio Website: https://dianaeusebio.com About Dr. Omaris Z. Zamora: Dr. Omaris Z. Zamora is a transnational Black Dominican Studies scholar and spoken-word poet. Her research interests include theorizing AfroLatinidad in the context of race, gender, and sexuality through Afro-diasporic approaches. Her forthcoming book, Cigüapa Unbound: AfroLatina Feminist Epistemologies of Tranceformation examines the transnational Black Dominican narratives put forth in the work of Firelei Baez, Elizabeth Acevedo, Nelly Rosario, Ana Lara, Loida Maritza Pérez, Josefina Baez, Cardi B, and La Bella Chanel. Dr. Zamora pays close attention to how they embody their blackness, produce knowledge, and shift the geographies of black feminism. Today I am joined by Lydia Schrader! While working as an Interior Designer at an architectural firm in Greenwich, Connecticut, Lydia found time to illustrate the scenes which most inspired her during the day. She decided to focus on building her eponymous brand as an artist full time in 2015. Lydia's artwork features a strong attention to detail and typically showcases interior and architectural elements throughout her work. Her own sunny disposition floods into her art resulting in a joyful body of work. It is often also nostalgic. Often painted off site in her studio from photographs, Lydia's artwork invokes the emotions of the remembered (or sometimes daydreamed) moment. What is so intriguing about buildings is their reflection of those who inhabit them. Interiors and architecture are what we intentionally surround ourselves with- for both shelter and comfort.Lydia's home studio has been in the lush gardens of Greenwich Connecticut, amid the city lights in Philadelphia, under the palms in Palm Beach, the lakes of Maine, the rolling hills Loudoun County in Virginia, and the latest— under the Spanish Moss in Savannah, Georgia. Home is where her husband, Brent, and their Cuban kitty cat, Lulu, are. Lydia's WebsiteLydia's InstagramHanley FoundationSprout

TRANSCRIPT OF AUDIO From the Cumberland Gap to the Atlantic Ocean, this is Virginia Water Radio for the weeks of May 9 and May 16, 2022. This episode from is part of a series this year of episodes related to trees and shrubs. MUSIC – ~14 sec – instrumental. That's part of “New Spring Waltz,” by the late Madeline MacNeil, who was a well-known and highly regarded musician based in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley. Each new spring brings a chance to focus on the life cycles of wildlife. This mid-spring episode of Water Radio explores some connections among nesting birds, trees, and water. Have a listen for about 30 seconds to three mystery sounds, and see if you know these three bird species who nest in trees near water, either always or at least sometimes. And here's a hint: you'll be singing a melodious trill, if you hit this mystery out of the park. SOUNDS - 29 sec. If you guessed two warblers and an oriole, you're right! And you get bodacious bird bragging rights if you recognized, first, the Prothonotary Warbler; second, the Northern Parula, also a kind of warbler; and third, the bird for which Baltimore's baseball team is named, the Baltimore Oriole. All three of these songbirds are found in Virginia in the spring and summer breeding season. During that period, the Prothonotary Warbler is common in Virginia's central and southern Coastal Plain and can occasionally be found in some other parts of the Commonwealth; the Baltimore Oriole is common outside of the Coastal Plain; and the Northern Parula is common statewide. The three species show a range of attachment to water-side trees as their nesting habitat. The Prothonotary Warbler is particularly known for nesting in cavities in trees around water; in fact, the bird is sometimes called the “Swamp Warbler” in the southeastern United States. The Northern Parula typically nests in trees along rivers and wetlands, especially in areas where it can find the materials it prefers for making its hanging nests: Spanish Moss or a kind of stringy lichen; this bird is also known to make nests out of debris left in trees after floods. The Baltimore Oriole is the least water-attached of these three species, being found nesting high in trees in many areas outside of deep woods, including parks and yards; however, streamsides are among the species preferred areas for the bird's fibrous, hanging nests. If you're near streams, rivers, or wetlands and you see or hear any of these three birds, look to nearby trees for cavities or hanging materials that may be harboring the birds' next generation. Thanks to Lang Elliott for permission to use the bird sounds, from the Stokes Field Guide to Bird Songs. Thanks also to Janita Baker of Blue Lion Dulcimers and Guitars for permission to use Madeline MacNeil's music, and we close with about 25 more seconds of “New Spring Waltz.” MUSIC – ~26 sec – instrumental. Life is good for the plantation owner, his wife, and their five lovely daughters. Life is a lark. A frolic. An Independence Day picnic at the swanky plantation down the road. A blissful carriage ride home beneath the towering Chinese elms billowing with Spanish Moss. But wait. What is that? Up ahead. Hanging from the thick limb of that yonder Chinese elm. Is it? Oh my God! It is. A man! Lynched! Independence Day: Gone with the Wind, with a twist. Not for the squeamish or the faint of heart.

Traveling through the swamp lands of Louisiana is an adventure, not only through nature, but through history. The dank humid air and large oaks filled with Spanish Moss add an air of the creepy. So much is haunted here. These swamp lands were once dotted with large plantations and some of them still exist today. Laura Plantation and Oak Alley Plantation are found near Vacherie, Lousiana. Today, they are museums that one can explore and possibly interact with a few ghosts. Join us as we explore the history and hauntings of the Laura and Oak Alley Plantations! The Moment in Oddity was suggested by Jared Rang and features The Johnny Cash Tarantula and This Month in History features the pardoning of gunslinger John Wesley Hardin. Michael and Julian go back to the past in this episode and publish the previously unheard pilot episode. It's rough and ready, but has some merit (if you look hard enough). In the episode, we discussHomeschooling. Julian explains why it's much more popular in the US than in Europe Savannah. We both love it. We think you will love it too. Mass Shootings. We used to have a topical news item on each episode. This topic, sadly, always seems topical in the US. Julian tries to explain why they are difficult to stop. This week's guest is a team of authors, Connor and Kevin Garrett, co-authors of Spellbound Under the Spanish Moss. This father and son also happen to make for a fascinating conversation. “Spellbound Under the Spanish Moss tells us, ‘magic is channeling what you feel into something you can touch and see. First, you have to believe.' I believe in Connor and Kevin Garrett and in the magic they have channeled into every glorious page of this pitch-perfect lowcountry fever dream of a hero's quest. This novel is a welcome reminder of the transcendent power of family and that the aspects of ourselves which make us different also make us powerful. Spellbound is a gift, destined to be treasured and shared.”—Jonathan Haupt, executive director of the Pat Conroy Literary Center and co-editor of Our Prince of Scribes: Writers Remember Pat Conroy“Connor and Kevin Garrett have spun an exceptional 'Tale of Southern Magic' in Spellbound. The blackwater swamps of southern Georgia are the perfect setting for this mythological folktale of betrayal and dark magic. But heroic sacrifice and love balance out the story, whose landscape is dotted with witches, shapeshifters, poisonous fruit, dreamcatchers, and a flower that never dies.” —Susan Cushman, author of Cherry Bomb and Friends of the Library, and editor of Southern Writers on Writing and The Pulpwood Queens Celebrate 20 Years!Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. "Our journey along the Natchez Trace Parkway, north out of Natchez, Mississippi has brought us to a site near Port Gibson, the town U. S. Grant found too beautiful to burn during the civil war. Today's site is called SUNKEN TRACE. "SUNKEN TRACE is a place you can walk along a section of the old trail and see how the footsteps of animals and people over the centuries have worn their way deep into the loose topsoil deposited here by windstorms hundreds of thousands of years ago. "If you decide to take a few minutes to walk the Old Trace, you may be fooled by the shadows and the tangle of vines, and roots, and the Spanish Moss that makes beards for the trees, and believe this to be an enchanted forest; but as you walk, try to imagine how the travelers in the early 1800s felt having 500 miles to endure, not knowing if they would survive the swamps, and the heat, and the swollen rivers and streams, the insects, disease, and accidents that lay ahead for them. "Join us next time when we'll visit Grindstone Ford where early travelers along the Trace took their first steps into the wilderness. This is Frank Thomas, your guide along the Natchez Trace, a road through the wilderness." For more about Natchez Trace: A Road Through the Wilderness, visit eddieandfrank.com

After a week off, we’re back with some cool facts from the world of plants and gulls. Did you know that gulls know your every move? There are probably some on the roof as we speak. They see you when you’re sleeping, they know when you’re awake. You better not pout, you better not cry. Sea gulls are coming to town.
The Deep South is both romanticized and disparaged. As non-Southerners who've lived in the South for nigh on seven years, we (Mike and Elizabeth) offer our views on life in the region. Such things as these are discussed: the friendly folk, the sweet tea, the southern ramblers (old timers who sound like characters from Faulkner novels and will keep talking literally to the end of time unless you walk away from them, and even then they will follow you and continue to talk), beautiful streets dripping in Spanish Moss, confederate flags, swamps, alligators, hurricanes, wonderful neighbors, southern charm, the fact that folk from the south are basically the same as folk from anywhere else in the world, the fact that the south and its people seem to be utterly unique, old mansions filled with ghosts, streets and elementary schools named after civil war generals, the fact that we don't know what we're talking about, the fact that we think we might know what we're talking about and so we're both setting novels in the South, and other topics. Please forgive us real Southerners. We love you.

Hello Gardeners, I'm Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Dean Moss is the “unpaid” executive director of the Spanish Moss Trail in Beaufort. He spent the day with us recently as we filmed this incredible infrastructure treasure that is transforming life in Beaufort for many citizens. Beaufort is flat, the weather is generally pleasant, and bike riding would be delightful except that our culture does not safely accommodate bike and vehicle traffic sharing the same roads. As a fine example of the rail to trail movement, this trail connects urban and rural spaces with room for walkers and bikers and skaters. Bikers use the left lane to pass and call out loudly – passing on the left – alerting pedestrians to their presence. Dean brought his wife's bike out for me to ride. Oh, what a delight. No dogs chased me, no cars frightened me, trees did shade me, and birds did serenade me.
Hello Gardeners, I'm Amanda McNulty with Clemson Extension and Making It Grow. Making It Grow spent a lovely day in Beaufort recently learning about and filming portions of the Spanish Moss Trail. The Magnolia Rail Line began in the late 1800's carrying freight for twenty miles to the Port of Port Royal. Both the port and railroad were decommissioned in the early 2000's, the train right of way now belongs to Beaufort County and has become the Spanish Moss Trail. Almost halfway complete, the former rail bed is a twelve-foot-wide concrete path which skirts in backyards, across marshlands, and near shops and restaurants. People fish from specially constructed trestles, throw cast nets in the marsh, ride bikes, push children, skate, and walk dogs in a safe, vehicle-free atmosphere enhanced by markers for historic sites, restrooms, and beautiful landscaping at trailheads, with trees, wild flowers, and birds galore.
