In this episode of Perfect Prey, I speak with Sarma Melngailis, author of The Girl with the Duck Tattoo and the central figure in the documentary Bad Vegan. Sarma shares her lived experience of sustained psychological coercion, how it felt to be worn down and re-anchored in someone else's reality, and what the recovery process looks like after a relationship that functioned much like a one-on-one cult. What we coverHow coercive control can operate like psychological warfare and the tactics that make it feel impossible to leave. Why intelligent, accomplished people can become victims: the slow wearing down, mirroring, and exploitation of hopes and vulnerabilities. The parallels between cult dynamics and one-on-one coercive relationships—why isolation and repeated micro-assaults change perception and decision-making.The aftermath: public shame, misrepresentation in media, and the ongoing work of reclaiming agency, safety, and reputation.Practical reflections for survivors and protective parents: how to notice red flags early, the power of sitting with your intuition, and how healing helps rebuild boundaries and clarity. Why listen Sarma's story illustrates that coercive control is not about intelligence or credentials — it's about a strategic, multifaceted assault on agency and reality. Whether you are a survivor, a caregiver, a clinician, or someone trying to understand how otherwise kind and competent people get trapped, this episode names the mechanisms, normalizes survivors' reactions, and offers concrete ideas for protection and recovery.Guest bio (short) Sarma Melngailis is the author of The Girl with the Duck Tattoo and the subject of the documentary Bad Vegan. In this episode of Perfect Prey I'm joined by my friend and colleague Dr. Ramani Durvasula, a clinical psychologist, author, professor, and internationally recognized expert on narcissistic abuse. We dig into why coercive control feels like imprisonment without bars, how systems (including family court) retraumatize survivors, and what survivors can do to protect themselves and their children. What we coverWhy coercive control is often invisible — and why the myth of “free will” makes it so hard for institutions to understand emotional abuse. How victim-blaming and the DARVO pattern (Deny, Attack, Reverse Victim & Offender) let abusers manipulate sympathy in court. The difference between milder narcissistic traits and the kind of malignant, coercive abuse that creates real danger and CPTSD-like responses.Practical, trauma-informed strategies for surviving family court: what to document, when to prioritize safety over “justice,” and how to protect your children while minimizing retraumatization. The “industrial divorce complex” — how systems and money can deepen harm, and what survivors can do strategically to preserve their safety and sense of self. Why listen If you're a survivor, a clinician, a legal professional, or someone trying to understand a loved one's experience, this conversation names the harms you may not see on the surface and gives clear, compassionate guidance for staying safe and getting validated. You'll hear clinical insight paired with real-world, tactical advice about custody, court behavior, and how to build a safety-first plan.Guest bio (short) Dr. Ramani Durvasula, Ph.D., is a licensed clinical psychologist, author, and media expert who writes and speaks widely about narcissism, personality disorders, and relationship dynamics. “He doesn't hit you, so it must not be abuse.” Yeah, no. That tired old line needs to die. This week, I sat down with Dr. Christine Cocchiola, a powerhouse expert on coercive control, the kind of abuse that doesn't leave bruises but instead, destroys lives. Christine breaks down how abusers don't need fists to dominate; they weaponize EVERYTHING from the court system, to churches, to your very own kids.If you've ever been dismissed, disbelieved, or labeled “too angry,” this episode is a masterclass in seeing the invisible, calling it what it is, and taking your power back, even if you have to fake it ‘til you make it from the ICU of your life. What You'll Learn: Why coercive control isn't a form of abuse, it IS abuse. Period. Full stop. How abusers hide behind charisma, charm, and a well-timed Bible verse. The horrifying way the legal system often rewards abusers and punishes protective moms. How abuse affects children, even when it's subtle, and especially when it's court-sanctioned.Why your anger is holy fire, not a character defect. How to start healing and parenting differently, even while walking through hell with a diaper bag.Read the full show notes and/or ask Natalie a question hereRelated Resources:Check out Dr. Christine Cocchiola's website.Connect with her on Instagram and Facebook. In this episode of Perfect Prey: A Coercive Control Podcast, Dr. Christine Cocchiola sits down with Dr. Peter Salerno to take a deeper look at the hidden dynamics of coercive control and the psychological abuse that entraps partners and children in cycles of fear, confusion, and dependency. We explore the defining traits of coercive controllers, how they manipulate both adult and child victims, and why survivors often struggle with cognitive dissonance, a mental conflict that can keep them tethered to abusive relationships long after the harm is clear. Together, we discuss the traumatic impact of cognitive dissonance, how abusers condition children to adopt distorted beliefs, and what protective strategies parents can use to safeguard their children's well-being.You'll also hear about the crucial role of trauma-informed therapy, ways to respond intentionally to children's conditioned behaviors, and how survivors can begin to break free from the psychological grip of coercive control. This conversation sheds light on the complex psychological dynamics of abuse and offers practical steps for supporting both adults and children who have been targeted by coercive controllers. If you've ever felt trapped in a relationship that left you doubting your own reality, or if you're working to protect children from ongoing manipulation, this episode will give you clarity, tools, and hope for the path forward.Connect with Dr. Peter Salerno:Website: https://www.drpetersalerno.com/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/drpetersalerno/Book a Consultation: https://www.drpetersalerno.com/new-page-1Book: https://www.drpetersalerno.com/new-pageResources Mentioned in this Podcast:

So you're getting out of your emotionally and spiritually abusive marriage (congratulations, by the way, you're a hero), and you think the hard part is over? Honey, buckle up. This episode pulls back the curtain on what actually goes down in family court and why women like you and me need to step into the CEO role of our divorce process.I talk with Amy Polacko, a woman who's been through it, wrote a book about it, and now helps other women survive it. We cover everything from strategic silence and choosing the right attorney, to the "he's such a good guy" nonsense that courts just eat up.Here's the low-down: You could be framed. Literally. Not metaphorically. Actually framed. So let's talk about how to not let that happen.Key Takeaways: You must be the CEO of your divorce. Do not—I repeat, do NOT—hand the wheel to someone else and hope for the best. The justice system isn't always just. Especially if you're a woman who dares to leave an abuser.Document everything and hire smart. Get a coach before you get an attorney. Better yet, get Amy. Abusers have a playbook. And Amy knows what's on every page.Your “Christian” husband might still screw you over. Faith language doesn't mean he's safe. It might just mean he's scarier.Kids grow up. Even if you lose custody, there's hope. Connection isn't court-mandated, it's soul-deep. We'll talk about what to do if the unthinkable happens.Read the full show notes and/or ask Natalie a question hereRelated Resources:Check out Amy's website and get some one-on-one coaching with her.Get Amy's FREE resource, 10 Divorce Mistakes You Can't Afford to Make. Sara Sharif's killers, Urfan Sharif and Beinash Batool, were sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday 17 December 2024. It was a Family Court Judge who delivered Sara into the hands of her torturers and killers, despite Sharif's extensive history of abuse against three women and two children. Sara's case is not an anomaly. Nearly every six days in the USA a child is killed amid a custody dispute or catastrophic family court decision. Join Laura, Dr Christine Cocchiola and Amy Polacko as they expose catastrophic failures in Family Courts where children are placed further at risk and protective mothers are framed as the problem. Can the family court system really be trusted to protect victims of abuse? Join us for a powerful and eye-opening episode as we welcome Dr. Christine Cocchiola and Amy Polacko, authors of the groundbreaking book "Framed: Women in the Family Court Underworld." Together, we tackle the systemic issues that plague family courts, often framing women as perpetrators rather than victims. Through their personal and professional experiences, Dr. Cocchiola and Amy Polacko reveal how patriarchal social conditioning and ingrained misogyny perpetuate these injustices, emphasizing the urgent need for greater awareness and education among legal and mental health professionals. We share harrowing stories from "Framed," featuring 22 women from across the US, UK, Canada, and Australia who have faced abuse and manipulation within the family court system. This episode highlights the shocking tactics used by abusive partners and the profound emotional, physical, and financial toll on the victims. As we explore these heart-wrenching narratives, the urgent need for systemic change becomes glaringly apparent. We dive deep into the concept of coercive control, illustrating how it serves as a gateway to more overt forms of abuse and how it is often overlooked by the courts. In our final segment, we focus on the crucial reforms needed to protect victims of abuse within the family court system. We discuss the inspiring efforts of advocates like Tina Swithin and the significance of grassroots movements in driving systemic change. The conversation underscores the importance of legislative action, collaboration among advocacy groups, and the necessity of believing and supporting victims. By spreading awareness through resources like "Framed," we hope to encourage societal involvement and push for changes that prioritize the safety and well-being of children and protective parents. Listen in as we advocate for better support and understanding within legal and social frameworks.
Have you ever learned from an expert in coercive control? Ever thought about the authoritarianism in a family structure? Maybe you or someone you know were married to a narcissist or knows of children being manipulated by an abusive parent. My latest guest, social worker Christine Cocchiola, is an expert on adult and child victims of coercive control. Dr. Christine Cocchiola has a doctorate in Social Welfare, is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, and is a tenured Social Work professor. Dr. Cocchiola also has a brand-new book with co-author Amy Polacko called Framed: Women in the Family Court Underworld. It consists of 22 stories from survivors of coercive control and narcissistic abuse and what it was like for them and their families dealing with the legal system. Dr. Cocchiola's work helps combat what I think is an unrealized epidemic, which is people who are harmful and toxic to others. During our talk, we focused on what I believe is vitally important in understanding authoritarian and coercive control when a parent acts like a cult leader. Join me in this fascinating conversation! Diving back into the archive for a replay of Part Two of our special two-part episode with Dr. Christine Cocchiola, a leading expert in Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) that delves into some of the most insidious forms of abuse: coercive control and post-separation abuse. In part two of this special two-part episode on Domestic Abuse, we delve deeper into a form of intimate partner violence (IPV) that's gaining attention in the media through high-profile cases like those of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, and Johnny Depp and Amber Heard: Post-Separation Abuse. Dr. Christine Cocchiola, a survivor and advocate, returns to further our understanding of this often covert and insidious form of abuse. While physical abuse is more overt and recognizable, Post-Separation Abuse encompasses tactics of coercive control and emotional manipulation that can continue to affect victims long after a relationship has ended. In part one, Dr. Cocchiola explored coercive control extensively. Now, she educates us on the varied manifestations of Post-Separation Abuse and highlights its dangers, emphasizing the need for awareness and support for those trapped in this destructive cycle. *** One note, as this is an archive episode, some of the links in the episode may have changed or no longer be in use.
