Description: Welcome to a truly invigorating episode where we get a chance to converse with Heather Markel, full-time travel coach. Heather is not your everyday professional; she's an international speaker, a bestselling author, and an advocate for a lifestyle that frees you from the chains of a desk job. Heather shares her unique story about trading her corporate America desk for a life of exploration and self-discovery. We delve into her journey from the streets of New York City to the beautiful landscapes of Normandy, Italy, France, England, Switzerland, and Costa Rica, reflecting on how her travels to 27 countries have shaped her perspective and helped her embrace her life's purpose. This episode explores Heather's transition from a frustrated corporate worker to a successful entrepreneur, steering others towards a life brimming with global connection, community, and freedom. Heather candidly talks about her experiences, challenges, and the life-altering decision to step away from the safe path and create her own trail. If you feel like you're too old to change your life course, or if you're under the impression that full-time travel is only for the wealthy or retired, Heather is here to debunk those myths. She guides us through the realities of embarking on a full-time travel lifestyle and how it's often less expensive and more fulfilling than a static life. Heather also addresses the concerns of professionals who are considering following in her footsteps. She stresses the importance of planning, trusting oneself, and the liberating power of breaking free from societal boxes. This episode is more than a conversation; it's an invitation to stop asking 'what if?' and start living your dreams. It's a call to wander, not because you're lost, but because you're on a quest to discover your destiny. Be sure to tune in and be inspired to begin your own journey of exploration and self-discovery. Heather grew up as an only child in New York City. When she was 16, she was encouraged by her stepmother to live with a host family in another country. Heather chose France, and ended up living with a farm family in Normandy. She was a shy teenager, but with the help of her French host mother and a family cow named Amazonie, she was pushed out of her comfort zone and into her self-confidence. That experience eventually led to studying abroad during college, where she spent a year in Italy, France and England, and worked in Switzerland during the summer. Throughout this time, Heather learned the value of immersing herself in different cultures and languages as opposed to being a passing tourist. After high school, Heather earned her BA in International Relations at The George Washington University. She then spent more than 25 years working in the corporate world. In 2017 she decided to take a 3 to 6 months break and 6 years later she is still on the road. She realised that travelling the world is more fun than sitting at a desk and became a full time nomad.https://heatherbegins.com/

BiographyI quit my 25+ year career in corporate for a career break in 2017. I turned that break into a way of life, traveling solo to 27 countries and 6 continents over the past four years. I've learned that full-time travel is a lot more meaningful than a vacation - it's one of the greatest ways to find personal meaning in life, learn about foreign cultures, and discover your deepest resourcefulness. While full-time travel / being a digital nomad has typically been thought of as something Millenials do, I advocate that nomadic life after 40 should be an expected part of life, for those who dream of finding what they want for the rest of their lives.I've been featured in The New York Times, the New Zealand Herald, entrepreneur.com, and am a regular contributor to Travel Awaits magazine.https://heatherbegins.com/

Anxiety is both a good thing and a bad thing. Too little and you have no motivation to get off the couch. Too much and you are too overwhelmed to get off the couch. The spot in the middle is ideal. But how do you get there and then not let it tip over into too much? I got to talk to Walker McKay, Heather Markel and Greg Burton about exactly that. It is always fun to hear other people's perspective on "everyday" things. How do you notice when the pressure in your life has gone beyond being useful and then what do you do about it? How do you professionally accept an apology?

During this conversation we realized there are at least three different types of apology. The emotional apology - I'm sorry I hurt you. The end the problem apology - I'm sorry you feel that way. And the customer service script apology - I'm sorry this is happening (but there is nothing I can do about it).  Regardless of the type of apology, humans are pretty awkward about it. In many situations saying, "It's okay" is simply not true. But saying "Your apology is worthless" is also not the right answer. With all that messiness in mind I asked Heather Markel, Simon Coles and Brian Bielawski (apologies for his audio - this is a "warning" apology - as in, I know it is bad. I can't fix it. But I think the content is valuable enough to post it anyway.) how they handle professional apologies. The conversation was enlightening and too short. Heather Markel recently joined Lesley for an exciting conversation about her bold decision to shift from successful New York executive to being a single woman living an audaciously free worldwide experience. Sharing pivotal moments in this personal journey, Heather reveals the moment of learning to navigate from her heart instead of her head, the angst of where to land first, and her discovery of a surprising number of people already living either an expat or nomadic life. Heather also shares insights from her inner journey of learning to accept help and care, after a lifetime of supreme independence. Fascinating is how she is maximizing the blessing of our current virtual world, especially since COVID, to create her new full life. Through her business coaching, development of The Expat Coach Association and The Expat Coach Directory, and now coaching people interested in making a similar shift, Heather is building a network of friends that spans the Earth. This is a conversation that is sure to inspire and entertain.    Heather Markel, CPC, quit her 25+ year career in corporate (France Telecom, British Telecom and AT&T) in 2017 to pursue her passion; traveling the world and meeting wonderful people. She intended to take a career break, and turned her passion into a way of life. Since January 2018, she's been to 6 continents and 27 countries, including the blessing of getting marooned in New Zealand for 2 years during the pandemic. Heather now teaches frustrated professionals over 40 who want to leave their job to travel full time, tackle the mindset, money and planning logistics to make it happen. She may have inadvertently started The Great Resignation. Heather speaks 6 languages. Her passion for culture and travel started when she spent a summer, as a teenager, living with a French host family in Normandie, France. She went, an only child of divorced parents from New York City, and found herself with 8 siblings on a farm in the middle of nowhere. She learned to love beer, appreciate Calvados, and love cows. Heather created The Expat Coach Association and The Expat Coach Directory in 2010 to help this unique industry get more attention. She then transitioned to business coaching, creating BullBuster Business Coaching, where she helps 6-figure clients in a business slump to identify why their business has slowed, and then create a plan for them to achieve the success she wants. In 2018, she launched Heather Begins. It started as a travel blog, and has become a resource to inspire others to travel full time, with, or without, a full time job. In 2021, she launched a Facebook group, Full Time Travelers And Nomads, which now has almost 3,000 members.   Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/heathermarkel/ Website: https://heatherbegins.com Business Coaching: https://bullbusterbusinesscoaching.com Expat Coach Association: http://theexpatcoachfoundation.com Expat Coach Directory: http://theexpatcoachdirectory.com Facebook profile: https://www.facebook.com/heatherjourneys/ Facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/fulltimetravelersandnomads LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/heathermarkel/

Welcome, this week's guest Heather Markel! Heather Markel is an intuitive business coach, speaker, professional traveler, and author. She's been featured in The New York Times, entrepreneur.com, the New Zealand Herald, and Travel Awaits. After quitting her 25+ year career in corporate and becoming a full-time traveler, she now inspires frustrated professionals and nomad-wannabees with the tools, resources, and empowerment to comfortably afford full-time travel. Links below! Heather goes into her story of how she learned that she loves to travel and what helped her to make the switch from a normal 9-5 job to traveling the world as a nomad. I ask her questions about how others can do it and about how you can even do it without leaving your home. We then talk about what it is that we gain from travel and how it affects us for the better and how it relates to other areas of our lives. We give a few examples of how you can travel in your everyday life, which I think is super cool. I share my 46th Vision Board success and we talk about it a little bit as well and relate it right back into the conversation. We share a few more thoughts on how to make the most of your life and give out a few awesome tips as well. In this season I'm talking with my guests about their story and how they've been able to "rewrite their stars" in their own life. Then after they've shared their story we transition into talking about vision boards for a little bit and I share one of the successes that I've had. Again, why I'm sharing my successes with you is to show that you can do the same thing, to use a vision board yourself and that you can rewrite your stars in your own life. Also, if you want to be a guest on my podcast, then be sure to fill out this questionnaire so that we can see about making that a reality. Because there are so many stories of people rewriting their stars, and I want to share them! https://forms.gle/obKbT739sukbrWWE6 Thanks for listening!
