It's Tuesday, April 15th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Kevin Swanson Nicaraguan government cancels Resurrection celebrations The Nicaraguan government is cancelling Resurrection week celebrations, and replacing them with their own events, reports International Christian Concern. Exiled Nicaraguan leader Felix Maradiaga explains that “The model that Sandinistas want to implement is very similar to that of China.”  The government “has a long history of trying to create a parallel church [and] of wanting to take possession of the symbols of faith.” Russians bombed Ukrainian city on Palm Sunday, kids' playground The Russian army bombed the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy on Palm Sunday, resulting in at least 34 citizens losing their lives, reports The Associated Press. Two children were among the dead. Last week, Russians bombed a children's playground in the city of Kryvyi Rih, killing twenty, nine of whom were children, reports the BBC. The United Nations calculates that over 12,600 Ukrainian civilians have been killed, and over 29,000 injured since the war started three years ago.  In addition, Reuters reports that Russia has dropped over 50,000 guided bombs on Ukraine since 2022. China has stopped exports of products for aerospace industry As the global trade war continues, China has stopped exporting certain products to America, including minerals and magnets used by the aerospace industry, automakers, aerospace manufacturers, and semiconductor companies. China's Ministry of Commerce has also issued regulations forbidding Chinese companies from doing business with a number of American companies. China's trade surplus with America jumped in March China's trade surplus exploded in March  — 12.4% year over year. China's trade surplus is the largest in the world, running around $1 trillion. Germany, Russia, and Saudi Arabia also lead the world in trade surpluses. China's surplus with the U.S. was up 4.5% in March, up 14% for India, up 11% for Africa, and up 17% for Vietnam.   The nation with the worst trade deficit is the United States -- running over $1.1 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom, India, France, and Turkey. Chinese students leaving U.S. universities Chinese students are leaving American universities. The official Chinese government's news service announced a 40% drop off of Chinese doctoral students at U.S colleges. Today, only 277,400 Chinese students are enrolled in U.S. higher education institutions which is down from 373,000 four years ago. Fewer Europeans traveling to United States Europeans are more reticent to travel to the United States. The numbers have dropped by 17% in March, year over year.  This represents the largest decline since the COVID-19 pandemic. More Gen Z men profess faith in Christ Here are more surprising numbers coming from the Barna Group. Since 2019, the percentage of Gen Z young men who profess to be committed to Jesus has increased by 19%.   Sadly, the metric is not improving for young women. Numbers remain “mostly flat in their commitment levels to Jesus.” Let's remember Paul's words in 1 Corinthians 16:22. “If anyone has no love for the Lord, let him be accursed. Our Lord, come!” United Kingdom bill would curtail home schooling The U.K. House of Lords has scheduled a second reading for an education bill that is set to curtail homeschooling. The law would require homeschooling parents to submit an extensive curriculum plan, along with other stipulations. Gold up; Nasdaq and Bitcoin down Gold continues its rise. Remarkably, it's value is now $3,200 per ounce, an increase in value of 16% since January 1st.   The Nasdaq is down 12% since the start of the year, hovering around 17,000 points. Bitcoin is down 9% since January at $85,000 per bitcoin.  Jair Bolsonaro survived 12-hour surgery after assassination attempt By the mercies of God, Brazil's previous president, Jair Bolsonaro survived a 12-hour-long surgery. This is his fifth medical intervention after a stabbing attack in 2018. His wife, Michelle, took to Instagram to announce that “the surgery concluded with success. My heart overflows with gratefulness for each one of you who have been praying.”  Michele's Instagram account describes herself as a servant of the Lord.  She writes, “Honor, glory, strength, and power to King Jesus!” Trump's powerful Christian message during Holy Week And finally, in one of the most explicit Christian messages ever issued by a world leader in our day, President Donald Trump issued a tribute to the Christian “holy week” on his Truth Social account. He wrote, “This Holy Week, Christians around the world remember the crucifixion of God's only Begotten Son, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. And, on Easter Sunday, we celebrate His glorious Resurrection and proclaim, as Christians have done for nearly 2,000 years, ‘HE IS RISEN!' “Through the pain and sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross, we saw God's boundless love and devotion to all humanity and, in that moment of His Resurrection, history was forever changed with the promise of Everlasting Life. … “I want to wish Christians everywhere a happy and very blessed holiday. America is a nation of believers. We need God, we want God and, with His help, we will make our nation stronger, safer, greater, more prosperous, and more united than ever before.” Psalm 72:10-11 speaks of the king's Son, who rules, and is to be praised by all nations. The Scripture declares, “The kings of Tarshish and of the isles will bring presents; The kings of Sheba and Seba will offer gifts. Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; All nations shall serve Him.” Close And that's The Worldview on this Tuesday, April 15th, in the year of our Lord 2025. Subscribe for free by Amazon Music or by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. [originally published on Patreon February 15, 2024] Today I discuss more criminals involved in the banana trade, introducing the Vaccaro Brothers and Sam the Banana Man Zemurray. I discuss that intersection between organized crime and Wall Street that intersected precisely in the banana trade through these figures.  I go through Zemurray's career, from his start in Alabama, his Cuyamel Fruit Company, the Honduran coup of 1911 and the concurrent takeover of Honduran national debt by JP Morgan bank, and the ensuing takeover of Honduras by United Fruit Company. Then, I discuss Zemurray's takeover of United Fruit Company (brokered by Sullivan & Cromwell) as well as the decisions Zemurray took at the helm of the company. After that, I discuss Zemurray's role in the creation of the modern state of Israel, especially regarding the multiple votes at the United Nations for the Partition Plan for Palestine in 1947. Then, I cannot avoid discussing Zemurray's children who just so happened to have become scholars of Central American studies.  [note: at the time I wrote and recorded this episode, I had not purchased The Heritage of the Conquistadors: Ruling Classes in Central America from Conquest to the Sandinistas by "Samuel Z. Stone", but I subsequently purchased the book and confirmed that it does not mention Samuel Zemurray or Cuyamel whatsoever. The book does mention United Fruit Company, though the author does not see fit to mention that his grandfather at one time ran said company.] Finally, I end the episode mentioning the Melville Collective's guerrilla actions against UFC offices in 1969. The Sandinista Revolution and its victory against the Somoza dictatorship in Nicaragua gripped the United States and the world in the 1980s. But as soon as the Sandinistas were voted out of power in 1990 and the Iran Contra affair ceased to make headlines, it became, in Washington at least, a thing of the past.  In The Sandinista Revolution: A Global Latin American History (UNC Press, 2024), Mateo Jarquin recenters the revolution as a major episode in the history of Latin America, the international left, and the Cold War. Drawing on research in Nicaragua, Cuba, Mexico, Panama, and Costa Rica, he recreates the perspective of Sandinista leaders in Managua and argues that their revolutionary project must be understood in international context. Because struggles over the Revolution unfolded transnationally, the Nicaraguan drama had lasting consequences for Latin American politics at a critical juncture. It also reverberated in Western Europe, among socialists worldwide, and beyond, illuminating global dynamics like the spread of democracy and the demise of a bipolar world dominated by two superpowers. Jarquin offers a sweeping analysis of the last left-wing revolution of the twentieth century, an overview of inter-American affairs in the 1980s, and an incisive look at the making of the post-Cold War order. In the 1970s in Nicaragua, left-wing rebels, calling themselves the Sandinista National Liberation Front, fought to overthrow their country's dictator. It worked. The Sandinistas led a coalition that took over the government in July 1979, in what became known as the Sandinista Revolution. However, within a few years, the Sandinistas faced a violent backlash, which pushed the country into a state of unrest that lasted for almost a decade. This period of violence, from roughly 1982-1988, was known as the Contra War. To many Americans, it's often associated with the Cold War and Ronald Reagan. It's been described as a proxy battle between the Soviet-supported Sandinistas on one side, and the U.S.-supported counter-revolutionaries, or Contras, on the other. But in this episode, we'll go beyond that Cold War framing of the conflict, to uncover a fuller explanation of why the Sandinista Revolution was successful in Nicaragua in 1979, why it was replaced by a liberal democratic government in 1990, and why that democracy has since fallen apart. Mateo Jarquín is a historian and author of The Sandinista Revolution: A Global Latin American History.” Through interviews with former Sandinistas and archival research conducted across Latin America, Mateo tells the story of this momentous decade in Latin American politics from the perspective of those who lived it. In doing so, he challenges our understanding of the Cold War's impact on Latin America, from the 1980s straight through to the present. In the second half of the episode, we'll talk with Watson Senior Fellow Steven Kinzer about Nicaragua's repressive political regime today, and a surprising act of resistance whose full effects are yet to be seen. Nicaragua Must Survive: Sandinista Revolutionary Diplomacy in the Global Cold War (University of California Press, 2023) tells the story of the Sandinistas' innovative diplomatic campaign, which captured the imaginations of people around the globe and transformed Nicaraguan history at the tail end of the Cold War. The Sandinistas' diplomacy went far beyond elite politics, as thousands of musicians, politicians, teachers, activists, priests, feminists, and journalists flocked to the country to experience the revolution firsthand. Drawing on extensive archival research and interviews, Eline van Ommen reveals the role that Western Europe played in Nicaragua's revolutionary diplomacy. Blending grassroots organizing and formal foreign policy, pragmatic guerrillas, creative diplomats, and ambitious activists from Europe and the Americas were able to create an international environment in which the Sandinista Revolution could survive despite the odds. Nicaragua Must Survive argues that this diplomacy was remarkably effective, propelling Nicaragua into the global limelight and allowing the revolutionaries to successfully challenge the United States' role in Central America. Perhaps no country has been subjected to the whims of US imperialism as much as Nicaragua. In the 1800s, it was seen a new breeding ground for the Monroe Doctrine, and sent mercenaries over there to fight wars. In the early 1900s, during the quest for colonies, the US marines invaded again, and through the efforts of Agosto Sandino, they were pushed out, not before establishing a foothold in the form of Anastasio Somoza and his sons who ruled the country with an iron fist. Somoza and his allies grew wealthy while most of the peasants starved and impoverished. Somoza, even took blood from the Nicaraguans and sold it to the US. However, the Sandinistas began their resistance in 1961 to the Somoza dictatorship. It was a David vs Goliath fight. Somoza had bombers from the US, while Sandinistas merely had their guns. Through their determination, the successfully defeated the Somoza dictatorship not before Somoza absconded with over $3 billion of aid. However, even victory was bittersweet as the US decided to train one of the most horrific militias known to man: the Contras. No action was deemed off-limits for the Contras. They beheaded children, they gouged out eyes of peasants. As one activist puts it, “The contras don't win the hearts and minds of the people. They take the arms and limbs”However, the Sandinista Revolution improved the lives of the Nicaraguan people in unprecedented ways. Within just 5 short months, the literacy rate rose up from the 50s to the 80s. But, they were fighting a brutal civil war with the Contras for the next decade, while under US sanctions.Being under the axe of imperial sanctions, and tired from the constant civil war, and under the pressure from the US, the Nicaraguan people voted out the Sandinistas for a US-backed leader: Violeta Chamorro. Once again, the gains from the revolution were rolled back. Literacy went down, many essential services were privatized. But, the Sandinistas did not give up. They continued to organize for the next 16 years and finally, their efforts paid off. Daniel Ortega and the Sandinistas came back to power in 2006. However, they Sandinistas have been under attack by the US through organizations like the NED that fund the violent opposition including the coup attempt in 2018 where 100s of innocent civilians in Nicaragua were killed. The US put Nicaragua under economic sanctions. The Sandinistas and Ortega skillfully navigated through this minefield using caution. For example, they did not immediately recognize the one-china policy because of all the factories Taiwan had put in. Only when the opportunity came forward did they do that. Finally, we walk about Ben and Dan's experience in the latest Nicaraguan elections and compare it with the US elections. We also discuss the US propaganda campaign against Nicaragua. As the Sandinista Revolution is finally able to make its platform a reality, Nicaragua has made significant achievements in healthcare, education, housing, renewable energy and food sovereignty, to name a few. One achievement that is starting to get more attention is the gain in equality for women. The Global Gender Gap Report for 2022 ranked Nicaragua 7th in the world for gender parity. Clearing the FOG spoke with Jill Clark-Gollub, who recently returned from a delegation to Nicaragua that focused on conditions for women. She describes the country as "run by women" who connect their feminism to the struggles against capitalism, colonialism and patriarchy. Clark-Gollub also dispels misinformation about Nicaragua being promoted in the US corporate media and explains how the US is working to undermine the gains of the Sandinistas through hybrid warfare. In this episode: I am joined by Pink and Blue, Sam, Josey, and Dave Wick, from the Stereo app. Follow me on Stereo - www.stereo.com/andanotherthing We go deep down the rabbit hole of the corruption of 3 letter agencies and the potential for World War 3. It is funny/not funny how wherever the CIA is operating, there seems to be a problem with drug smuggling. The CIA learned under the Kennedy administration that if they want to carry out the black ops without interference from the government, they need to raise their own funds. The CIA is not happy with the ridiculous amount of money bestowed upon them by the taxpayers of the United States, so they engage in nefarious activities to raise money so they can fund operations with no governmental oversight. The Iran Contra scandal was a prime example of this. This was really 2 scandals in one and named to deceive the public. Congress refused to fund the CIA's covert operations, so the CIA engaged in cocaine smuggling to raise the funds needed for their operations. Directly opposing the wishes of congress, the CIA sent weapons to Iran in the hopes to delay the release of U.S. hostages taken following a CIA led coup to overthrow the democratically elected leader of Iran. The second part of the scandal involved the CIA funding a rebel group in Nicaragua called the Sandinistas which was fighting to overthrow the democratically elected socialist leaning government of Nicaragua. All of this was paid for by the CIA arranging for cocaine to be smuggled into the United States and sold to U.S. citizens. The program was overseen by ex-CIA and current vice president, George Bush Sr. The cocaine was flown into Mena Arkansas, where Bill Clinton was governor. The drugs were then distributed to 10 major U.S. cities where street gangs carried out the retail sales. The overabundance of cheap cocaine is what led to the crack epidemic. Gary Webb a reporter for the San Jose Mercury News broke the story. Link to his book below. Americans have a love-hate relationship with the CIA. On the one hand, we revere and glamorize the agents who fight for our country in the shadows. On the other hand, we are shocked when we learn the CIA plays dirty. In this episode, Eli and veteran intelligence journalist Mark Hosenball discuss how the CIA looked the other way as the Contras they supported in Nicaragua trafficked cocaine to fund their war against the Sandinistas. My guest on today's show was so interesting, his life story couldn't fit in just one episode! So, look for episode two of this interview to go live on June 12, 2022. My guest on the show today is New York Times Bestselling Author and retired Operations Officer of the Central Intelligence Agency Enrique “Ric” Prado. Mr. Prado is a twenty-four-year veteran of the Central Intelligence Agency where he served as an Operations Officer in six overseas posts. Mr. Prado spent his first ten years at CIA as a paramilitary officer in Special Operations Group/Special Activities Division (SOG/SAD, Ground Branch), the CIA's “special operations force.” His service included 36 months in Central American jungles as the first CIA officer living in the anti-Sandinista “Contra” camps. Subsequently running counterterrorism/insurgency operations in Latin America and in the Philippines.  Cuban born and immigrating solo to the US at 10 - which landed him in an orphanage in Pueblo, Colorado - “Ric” inherited early on a “debt of honor” to the USA. Thus, he volunteered for military service at 20. Ric joined the US Air Force elite Pararescue Teams P.J.'s.  In today's episode we discuss:·      Why Ric carried the Walther PPK as a backup weapon, the iconic spy gun used by James Bond.·      The false portrayal of the Central Intelligence Agency spun by Hollywood common in movies and television.·      Common C.I.A. terms and vocabulary.·      Ric's early memories of Fidel Castro's forces invading and occupying Cuba.·      John F. Kennedy's betrayal of the people of Cuba and the failed Bay of Pigs invasion.· What life in Castro's Cuba was really like, including the government taking all your possessions, public lynchings, children encouraged to spy on their parents, and what a Castro neighborhood watch looked like. · Ric's escape from communist Cuba to the United States at age ten without his parents and landing in an orphanage in Pueblo, Colorado.· Ric's path to becoming a member of the Air Force's elite Pararescue Teams known as the P.J.'s, him being a firefighter/paramedic for Miami Dade Metro, and how those experiences helped him eventually become a C.I.A. Operations Officer. · Ric's first job with the C.I.A. as a contractor helping the Contras fight the communist Sandinistas in the jungles of Honduras. All of this and more on today's episode of the Cops and Writers podcast.Visit Ric Prado's website to learn more about him and his book, Black Ops. Enjoy the Cops and Writer's book series. Please visit the Cops and Writers website. If you have a question for the sarge, hit him up at his email.Come join the fun at the Cops and Writers Facebook groupIf you are a new author and are wondering how to maximize sales or you are a published author who wants to elevate your author career, check out Smart Passive Income PodcastWeekly interviews, strategy, and advice for building your online business the smart way.Listen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the show
