@Notevend2 talks with 2023-24 1st Team All-NE10 player, Matt Becht on this week's episode. Matt Becht attended high school in Virginia where he played for Bishop O'Connell. After a successful high career, Becht committed to Mount St. Mary's. Early in his freshman year, Matt suffered a knee injury that required surgery. That would only be the start of the adversity Matt faced during his college career; in just two years playing for the Mountaineers, Becht went through three surgeries. Matt entered the transfer portal after his second year, and would commit to Division 2, NE10 member, Southern New Hampshire University. The next three years playing for the Penman would be filled with success; in three years Becht averaged over 14 ppg in every year, and shot 45% from three in his final two years with SNHU. In 2023-24 SNHU won a NE10 championship and made a run all the way to the D2 NCAA Elite 8. With one year of eligibility left, Matt entered the transfer portal where he would hear from plenty of Power 5 and high major schools. Becht committed to Merrimack for the 2024-25 season. Merrimack competes in the MAAC conference and kicks off their season Saturday (11/9) against Vermont. Hear about his basketball journey dealing with adversity, his dominant career at SNHU, and his expectations going into his final year of college basketball. Lanni Brown grew up surrounded by basketball. Her father, Dee Brown, was an NBA legend with the Boston Celtics. Her sister is currently playing in the WNBA and her brother is a D1 Basketball player. While she also found success in the sport, she faced lots of comparisons with her family, struggled to separate her self identity from her performance and ultimately realized that she was “not feeling basketball.” Her transition to the D1 level exacerbated her struggle as she felt different from her teammates because she didn't love her sport and even felt selfish, ungrateful and guilty that she was getting a scholarship despite not being fully invested. Lanni chose to shift her mindset and focus on energy, positivity and enjoying the moments and making an impact in her own way. Since her competitive career has ended, she is pursuing a Master's at Jacksonville University in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with the plan to pursue a PhD in Clinical Psychology She is combining her personal experiences and education to better support student athletes as an advocate, ambassador and future clinician. @alanni.noelle

Episode #101. Rafael Barlowe joins me on the podcast this week. After working in basketball operations for the Texas Legends (the Dallas Mavericks' G League affiliate), Rafael launched Barlowe Basketball, a coaching and player-development operation that led him to becoming a skills trainer for players with the NBA, EuroLeague, EuroCup, Champions League, G League, and the NCAA Division I. As a videographer, he created YouTube mini-documentaries for a few of the NBA players he trained and gained valuable experience working with elite AAU programs like Mo Williams Academy Elite and D1 Basketball that have produced McDonald's All-Americans and first-round NBA draft picks. His combination of skills training and the ability to create video content has afforded him the opportunity to see the world while doing what he loves and what he is passionate about. His video projects have led him to having numerous NBA and NFL players as clients, and his work has been featured on NBA.com, washingtonpost.com, USAToday.com, CBS.com, and NBA TV. He is the host of podcast, NBA Big Board. I loved this conversation so much. I first met Rafael when he came to my high school to recruit students for an internship program called INROADS. After listening to his presentation, I knew I wanted to be a part of this program. That program eventually led me to an internship and then a full-time offer at one of the biggest accounting firms in the world. I am so grateful to Rafael and I am so inspired by his incredible story. After leaving INROADS he went on to pursue his passion, basketball. He has an incredible story of perseverance. I can't wait for you to listen. Connect with Rafael: Website Connect with Lupe: Website Instagram
Today's episode is a little different. I've had a lot of questions about my journey and how I got to where I am today. If you've been following me for a while, yo know I played Division 1 basketball. Her life story takes on many adjectives. Inspring is one. Painful is another. Worldly could say it. But driven would be the word I would use. When you face headwinds, you must put your headdown; Brooke has and continues to do that. A model, a pageant winner, a Catholic, a Muslim, a mother and a wife has prepared her for a career that is completely unique; she motivates the motivators. Working with some of the great self-help motivators like Anthony Robbins, Brooke brings to the table a worldy view of how to move the needle. I think you will find this a "fascinating" conversation and inspiring too.

DWill The Coach flies solo for the 1st time in a long while as Coach Chill Will was in Louisiana dropping off Greedy at Northwestern State University. But as y'all know the show must go on and Coach DWill gives out "Free Game" in this episode as he drops some recruiting jewels that every player, parent, coach, etc...needs to hear!
Growing up in Florida, Jon Willis was very familiar with what it took for athletes to compete at the next level. His own brother, (who played football at the highest level) was a major example to him as Jon would often train alongside his older brother and his brother's teammates/friends. In today's interview, we'll discuss some of the ways that Coach Jon Willis prepared himself (as a player) for the opportunities that would end up presenting themselves later on, and how he took advantage of those opportunities himself. It's something ALL athletes should take notes on. Also, we'll chat in-depth about the scope of the college athletics world. Coach Jon has experience coaching at the D3, NAIA, and JUCO levels, and was a D1 Basketball player himself. So he'll chat about how even JUCO has changed and how the talent level has increased. We'll talk about some of the reasons for that (including the transfer portal and many other things) All athletes should take note of what Jon has to say today. You'll definitely be glad you did! And as we discuss in the interview, make sure to follow Jon on his various channels: Website: https://coachjonwillis.com/ Website: https://www.thejuiceuniversity.com/ Instagram: @coach_jon_willis And you can even purchase a copy of his book PUSH (highly recommend) by going here: https://www.thejuiceuniversity.com/courses/push Follow me on my social platforms too if you'd like to chat with the Guru! Few families can boast of one person competing in the NBA Dunk Contest, but the Nances have two: Larry Nance Sr beat Dr. J in 1984, and his son, Larry Nance Jr finished second in 2018. The latter currently plies his basketball trade for the New Orleans Pelicans after they acquired him from the Portland Trailblazers just before the trade deadline in February 2022. Beforehand, the Cavs had inked Larry to a four-year, $44.8 million contract. Previously, Nance played for three and half seasons for the Los Angeles Lakers, who selected him with the 27th pick of the 2015 NBA Draft. He earned this first-round status with a stellar career at the University of Wyoming, where he led the Cowboys to their first-ever NCAA Tournament berth and was named 2× First-team All-MWC, MWC Defensive Player of the Year, and 2× MWC All-Defensive Team. Beyond the accolades, Larry had to fight hard to live with Crohn's Disease, which stunted his growth as a teenager before the condition was diagnosed. In this episode, listen to Larry share about:What it was like growing up as the son of an NBA legendWhy being diagnosed with Crohn's Disease marked a turning point and a growth spurtHow he earned a scholarship despite his medical condition and only playing JV as a juniorWhat happened in his Lakers pre-draft workout that prompted the team to draft himWho gave him the secret to making it in the NBAKeep up with Larry on his Instagram feed and support the great work of his foundation, Athletes vs. Crohn's & Colitis, on their website.
