Opening Song: I Don't Have Much (https://open.spotify.com/track/3GhH76hVaJTOVGSBR683Vi?si=b41748defc7846be) by Taylor Leonhardt, sung by Mission House Lyrics: How can I respond To the love that You have lavished on me How can I respond To the love that You have lavished on me I don't have much I don't have much But I have a heart that beats for You I have a heart that beats for You Ev'ry part of me Wants to love You like You've loved me Lord Ev'ry part of me Wants to love You like You've loved me my Lord I have a heart that beats for You I have a heart that beats for You I have a heart that beats for You I have a heart that beats for You I have a life I'll give to You I have a life I'll give to You I have a life I'll give to You I have a life I'll give to You Passage: 1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and Timothy our brother, 2 To the saints and faithful brothers in Christ at Colossae: Grace to you and peace from God our Father. 3 We always thank God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, 4 since we heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and of the love that you have for all the saints, 5 because of the hope laid up for you in heaven. Of this you have heard before in the word of the truth, the gospel, 6 which has come to you, as indeed in the whole world it is bearing fruit and increasing—as it also does among you, since the day you heard it and understood the grace of God in truth, 7 just as you learned it from Epaphras our beloved fellow servant. He is a faithful minister of Christ on your behalf 8 and has made known to us your love in the Spirit. 9 And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, 10 so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God; 11 being strengthened with all power, according to his glorious might, for all endurance and patience with joy; 12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in light. 13 He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins. (Colossians 1:1–14 ESV) Musical Reflection: All to Jesus I Surrender (SURRENDER) by Winfield S. Weeden Reflection Notes: This tune was originally intended to have two-part harmonies on the verse and four-part harmonies of the refrain; the additional harmonic fullness adds to the repeated emphasis of the words “I surrender all.” Prayer: Almighty God, who resists the proud and gives grace to the humble: send thy Holy Spirit and let that mind be in us, which was also in Christ Jesus, that we may be meek and lowly of heart and never by our foolish pride provoke thine indignation, but, receiving into humble and thankful hearts the gifts of thy providence and of thy grace, may thereby be continually refreshed. Teach us not to think of ourselves more highly than we ought to think; to be modest in speech, just and merciful in action and benevolent to all. Let us prefer nothing to him, who preferred nothing to our salvation; but grant us that adhering inseparably to his kingdom and standing bravely by his cross, we may be found faithful to death, and at the end may be admitted into the joy of his most blessed presence. Amen. -Cyprian

We are the workmanship of a creative God. Our new lives in Christ are supposed to mean something. We are called to walk in a manner worthy of the calling on our lives, and God planned out the good works for us to walk in. Taylor Leonhardt's song "Poetry" led me to ponder this, and more, in Paul's letter to the Ephesians. Join me in spending time in this letter, with a deep look at the profound transformation we experience in Christ and what it's all for. In this episode, I discuss: Taking a B.I.T.E. out of Scripture - this week's Bible Interaction Tool Exercises include: Read in context Consider historical context Consult an overview Follow the cross-references Mark up the text Make a list Meditate on Scripture Differentiating the art from the inspiration for the art Seeking to know more about Scripture to better appreciate the art created inspired by it The focus verse - Ephesians 2:10 Reading the entire letter to the Ephesians Consulting overviews for historical context - Ephesians Bible Book Overview Video by the Bible Project | ESV Study Bible Amazon Paid Link Identifying the similarities in the culture at Ephesus and our culture today Following the cross-reference to the book of Acts to see Paul's experiences in Ephesus - Acts 19-20 Studying our focus text - Ephesians 2:1-10 Marking up the text Making a list of observations of our lives before Christ Making a list of observations of what God did for us in Christ Making a list of observations of our new lives in Christ Seeing that we are God's workmanship, His poema, for a purpose - Ephesians 2:10 Getting inspired to go back to the whole letter to see more about how we are to "walk" now that we've been saved by grace through faith More Than a Song Playlist Additional Resources Lyrics for Taylor Leonhardt's song "Poetry" - TaylorLeonhardt.com "Are We God's Poem?" - Bill Mounce Article Introduction to Ephesians - Reformation Study Bible Amazon Paid Link "Free from Bondage God's Way: Galatians/Ephesians" by Kay Arthur - Amazon Paid Link Weekly Challenge Dig in to God's Word this week. Together, they unpack how God uses messy stories with imperfect characters, just like us, to bring about righteousness and fulfillment. In the midst of a crisis or injustice, sometimes the only thing we can do is give our situation up to God. Let's dive in. Opening Song:   In Times of Trouble by Taylor Leonhardt and Paul Zach Lyrics: I was like a shipwreck out in the sea Storm clouds, rain poundin', left alone in the deep Winds were blowin' right through me, no help to be found Lost my sense of direction, water's takin' me down   Then God lifted up his hand And he delivered me again When all of my hope was gone He turned my fear into a song, singing God is my help in times of trouble God is my help in times of trouble   I was like a city under attack I cried, O God, take pity, keep the enemy back I waited and I waited, but no answer came Seemed like all was finished, enemy at the gate   Then God lifted up his hand And he delivered me again When all of my hope was gone He turned my fear into a song, singing God is my help in times of trouble God is my help in times of trouble God is my help in times of trouble God is my help in times of trouble Passage:  14   King Herod heard of it, for Jesus' name had become known. Some said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him.” 15 But others said, “He is Elijah.” And others said, “He is a prophet, like one of the prophets of old.” 16 But when Herod heard of it, he said, “John, whom I beheaded, has been raised.” 17 For it was Herod who had sent and seized John and bound him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife, because he had married her. 18 For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother's wife.” 19 And Herodias had a grudge against him and wanted to put him to death. But she could not, 20 for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.   21 But an opportunity came when Herod on his birthday gave a banquet for his nobles and military commanders and the leading men of Galilee. 22 For when Herodias's daughter came in and danced, she pleased Herod and his guests. And the king said to the girl, “Ask me for whatever you wish, and I will give it to you.” 23 And he vowed to her, “Whatever you ask me, I will give you, up to half of my kingdom.” 24 And she went out and said to her mother, “For what should I ask?” And she said, “The head of John the Baptist.” 25 And she came in immediately with haste to the king and asked, saying, “I want you to give me at once the head of John the Baptist on a platter.” 26 And the king was exceedingly sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests he did not want to break his word to her. 27 And immediately the king sent an executioner with orders to bring John's head. He went and beheaded him in the prison 28 and brought his head on a platter and gave it to the girl, and the girl gave it to her mother. 29 When his disciples heard of it, they came and took his body and laid it in a tomb.   (Mark 6:14–29 ESV) Musical Reflection:  St. Matthew Passion, BWV 244, Pt. 2, No. 39, Aria: “Erbarme dich” by J.S. Bach Reflection Notes:  The exquisite aria “Erbarme dich” from Bach's St. Matthew Passion opens with a melancholy violin solo, where each phrase decays like a sigh of anguish. The mezzo-soprano's text reads “Have mercy, my God, for the sake of my tears! Look here, heart and eyes weep bitterly before you. Have mercy, have mercy!” Prayer: Into your hands, O God, we commend ourselves and all who are dear to us this day. Let the gift of your special presence be with us even to its close. Grant us never to lose sight of you all the day long, but to worship and pray to you, that at eventide we may again give thanks unto you; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Through countless slings and arrows, and her own mainstream pop superstardom, Amy Grant has remained the defining face and voice of contemporary Christian music for over forty years. She was the first CCM artist to have a platinum record, (followed by five more platinum albums, three multi-platinum albums, and four gold albums.) She was also the first CCM artist to have a #1 pop single and has placed 17 hits on the Top 40 Adult Contemporary chart. She has earned 6 Grammy Awards and numerous Dove and other statues. With sales in excess of 30 million units, Amy Grant is the best-selling contemporary Christian singer of all time. But beyond all that, she crafted and delivered songs that spoke honestly, and vulnerably, to a generation. Amy Grant is currently marking the 30th anniversary of her breakthrough Heart In Motion album as well as a brand new collaborative worship album, Faithful that finds her working alongside a slew of talented young women, including True Tunes Podcast alums Taylor Leonhardt, Christa Wells, and Sandra McCracken. She graced the cover of the original True Tunes News in 1993 and is back with us for this very special episode of the True Tunes Podcast.   As the Christian subculture seems to have become defined by that to which it is opposed, its political meanderings, and any number of culture wars and distractions, Grant’s legacy as a person of warmth, generosity, grace, and hospitality only continues to grow. What might young artists, songwriters, and listeners have to learn from someone with such an unlikely story?   And on a special extended edition of the True Tunes Jukebox, we welcome two guest commentators to reflect on many of Grant’s most significant songs from very different perspectives. Industry veteran and radio expert Chris Hauser and singer-songwriter (and childhood Amy fan) Michelle Lynn Thompson join host John J. Thompson for a comprehensive dive into the deep cuts and musical watermarks of Grant’s amazing career. It’s our longest, fullest, episode yet. Singer-songwriter Taylor Leonhardt has been on some big stages lately, playing guitar with Amy Grant, Andrew Peterson, and others, and has a slew of collaborations over the last couple of years. Her “star” is certainly on the rise. But as she prepares for the release of her third independent solo album, this Texas-born, Carolina-bred, new Nashville resident is leaning into her Americana roots, and her circle of friends, for both her songs and her sound. In this episode, we get to know this engaging artist as we explore the power of community and influences in the pursuit of our voice. We also talk about the difference between taking some classes, and really learning a language, and what Taylor’s adventure in Paris might teach us about listening to understand.   On the Jukebox, we survey four of the artists cited as influences by Leonhardt and featured in her specially curated and corresponding playlist. Carole King’s Tapestry, Emmylou Harris's Wrecking Ball, Patty Griffin’s 1,000 Kisses, and Krauss & Plant’s Raising Sand. We also consider some wisdom about Southern Writers from Flannery O’Connor on our Soapbox feature. It’s a full episode, for sure, but you can handle it. We believe in you. Taylor Leonhardt is a worship leader and singer/songwriter based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Taylor was born and raised in Texas, where a childhood love for country music rooted deep in her heart.  A strong yet subtle lyricist with silvery vocals reminiscent of Patty Griffin and Emmylou Harris, Leonhardt has taken those roots and crafted a sound all her own.  Her latest release, RIVER HOUSE (available on iTunes and Spotify), has garnered praise for its warm, spacious production and soul-stirring songwriting. In this inspiring conversation, Taylor and our host Adam Russell explore Taylor's journey as a songwriter.  From the "brackish waters" of writing for both the Church and outside world to the role hospitality plays in our songwriting, Taylor's creative self-awareness invites us to dive deep in this special podcast!
