As Patty's family searched for her, a trial was taking place far away in Lubbock. It was a murder case with no body, but because their was blood evidence and other circumstantial evidence, it resulted in convictions. Patty Vaughan's case arguably has more circumstantial evidence. Also, things were tense between Patty's family and her estranged husband JR, resulting in assaults, one, perhaps, more understandable than the other. The search for Patty and the longing for justice has taken its toll on her family, and also taken a toll on former Bexar County Sheriff's Office Investigator Adrian Ramirez, who worked the case as a young crime scene technician and again as a seasoned cold case detective. If you have any information about the disappearance of Patty Vaughan, please contact the Bexar County Sheriff's Office at 210-335-6000.If you're experiencing domestic abuse, please get help by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE, or 800-799-7233. Part 2 of 3. After the disappearance of Patty Vaughan in the fall of 1996 under suspicious circumstances, the Bexar County Sheriff's Office was reluctant to name her husband JR a suspect, although they admitted the investigation was centered around him. The circumstances surrounding Patty's abandoned Dodge Caravan were highly suspicious, as was the idea that she would leave her children behind. Blood evidence found in the minivan and in her Wilson County home certainly indicated foul play but still, with no body, authorities declined to make an arrest, or, it seemed, treat the case as a homicide. When a year had passed, the police were no closer to finding Patty than they were on day one.If you have any information about the disappearance of Patty Vaughan, please contact the Bexar County Sheriff's Office at 210-335-6000.If you're experiencing domestic abuse, please get help by calling the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 800-799-SAFE, or 800-799-7233. In the fall of 1996, Patty Vaughan separated from her husband JR after more than 10 years of marriage. While she worried about her children, the separation, which was likely leading to divorce, was necessary. She ran into an old flame while attending a rodeo, and an old romance started anew. Patty was lighter – and happier – than ever. On Christmas Day, she decided it would be best for her estranged husband to come over and spend the holiday with the kids, since it was their first Christmas apart. She wanted to make the transition as smooth as possible. But things didn't work out as she intended. After heated arguments between Patty and JR, she disappeared. But it wasn't without a trace. Dr. Phil is discussing a dangerous trend law enforcement calls a “Takeover,” which is an event organized on social media with the sole intention of gathering as many teens and young adults as possible, to literally “takeover” city and suburban streets, parks, malls, and houses to party in for profit. Law Enforcement reports that often these events result in businesses ransacked, and neighborhoods destroyed from chaotic behavior, reckless driving, and violence that ensues, many times leading to arrests and death. Dr. Phil will speak with the mother and teenage girlfriend of a 17-year-old boy named, Landyn, who was shot and killed at what has been described as a Teen Takeover party. Dr. Phil will speak with Bexar County Sheriff, Javier Salazar, who is investigating Landyn's murder, and reports that every weekend his office is responding to drug and alcohol fueled takeovers organized by online hosts, and attended by teens, who are armed with guns. Leading up tonight's episode, Dr. Phil's team worked to gather intel in order to track alleged takeover party hosts in the Bexar County and discovered information about a potential takeover party. Watch what happens when the Bexar County Sheriff's Office allowed Dr. Phil's cameras to follow them to that party, which resulted in numerous arrests, and firearms seized. Thirty two year old Patty Vaughan went missing on Christmas Day, 1996, from her home in La Vernia, Texas. Her family needs to know what happened and if she's no longer alive, to find her body and lay her to rest. Someone knows what happened and together, we might be able to convince them to come forward. Welcome to another episode of The Unlovely Truth. I'm your host, private investigator Lori Morrison. Join me for another captivating true crime story, where physical, spiritual, and emotional safety takeaways are waiting for us. If you are listening, I believe you have a unique calling—to become a different kind of PI, not a typical private investigator, but a person of impact! This is Season 4, Episode 46. Our case this week is the case of Patty Vaughan. Even after nearly 27 years, this case is still solvable. So let's investigate and share all over the state of Texas and the world. Lying on the south bank of Cibolo Creek, La Vernia Texas is a small town near San Antonio. Patty and her husband Jerry Ray “J.R.” Vaughan had been separated for a couple of months. Patty told friends and family that she had grown increasingly frustrated by JR's controlling behavior. They claimed that Patty told them he didn't allow her work and was verbally abusive. Some suspected there was physical abuse as well when they spotted bruises that Patty couldn't explain. Authorities in Patty's case say there is circumstantial evidence, but not enough to charge anyone. That's where we can help. A lot of people from the great state of Texas listen to this podcast. I hope you will all share it with your friends who live in the San Antonio area, or who did back in 1996 when Patty went missing. Sometimes all it takes to break a case wide open is one piece of information. Hearing about a cold case may stir up memories for people, or even a desire to share information they were once afraid to disclose. So let's share with friends, share on social media, and try to get some more answers for Patty's family and maybe even some justice. Proverbs 31:8-9 NIV Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. In Patty's case, I firmly believe there are people who have lost their voices, figuratively speaking. They know what happened. Patty cannot speak for herself, so it's up to someone else to stand up for her right to have justice done. If you are that person, you don't need to worry that speaking up may get someone in trouble. It's a person's actions that do that, not the reporting of those actions. Police and prosecutors can only work with the information that is available to them. You can't finish putting a puzzle together if you don't have all of the pieces. You might be able to say with certainty what picture the puzzle makes, but you still aren't done. Patty's case isn't done. It's still missing a few pieces. If you have any of them, look in the show notes for how you can contact authorities to tell them what you know. Someone, and maybe more than one someone, has literally gotten away with murder. While they've been free, who knows how many other people they may have hurt. Patty's family certainly still hurts. Let's do all we can to help them now. I'd love to know what cases or topics you'd like to see on the podcast in 2024! Send me an email a lori@theunlovelytruth.com or message me on social media. What's that smell? Maybe nothing…Title: Courts have long seen K-9 dogs as impartial. Now police bodycams hold them accountableVideo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bF52AnWEjAw&t=91sSource: NPRDate: 08 June 2023 Summary: Body camera footage is forcing people to reconsider whether drug-sniffing dogs are impartialSituation: For decades, American courts have presumed that drug-sniffing dogs were impartial as supported by training records and proper credentialing by local K-9 organizationHowever, body camera footage is now causing people to rethink the impartiality of these dogs, as evidenced by a newly filed federal lawsuit in TexasProblemIn the lawsuit, 37-year-old Houston resident Alek Schott accuses Bexar County Sheriff's deputy Joel Babb of pulling him over on Interstate 35 on false pretensesUpon refusing to give permission for law enforcement to search his pickup truck, Schott claims that K-9 unit deputy Martin A. Molina III prompted his dog to "alert" to the scent of drugs.ActionHistorically this would have been nearly impossible to prove, but with the advent of body cameras, things are changingSo Schott requested and received the body camera footage, which gave him almost the same view as that of K-9 deputy MolinaThe video shows the moment Molina gestured towards his attentive dog with his right hand, at which point the dog jumped up on the pickup's door, and Molina let him into the cab to search the truck."It's clear to me that he's telling the dog to alert," Schott says. "I thought, 'These guys are trying to destroy my life.' "ResultNo drugs were found in Schott's pickup, and the county later reimbursed him for damage done during the search — including dog scratches outside and inside the truck.Schott, who is suing the sheriff's office, is represented by Christine Herbert, an attorney with the Institute for Justice, a civil liberties organization focused on search and seizure.Herbert says they're pursuing the lawsuit because they believe the deputies violated Schott's rights — and did so in part by relying on the dog.The potential influence of a handler's agenda on their dog has long been a nagging doubt about drug-sniffing dogs - more specifically, handlers might influence them to alert to a scent that may not be there. Research has shown handlers may not even realize they're doing it. Some K-9 trainers have called for "double-blind" testing of the dogs to eliminate police biasIn double-blind testing, the location and existence of test drugs are randomized, unknown even to the dog's handler. Eliminating Police Bias When Handling Drug-Sniffing DogsBut that approach has been slow to catch on and is often met with hostility.Former K-9 officer and trainer Andy Falco hopes the spread of body cameras will change that hostility towards double-blind testingFalco, who works as an expert witness in cases involving sniffer dogs, says the number of legal challenges based on close-up video has exploded. Episode 59 Dallas Police Department Major Mark Harris #7877 ”The craziest rage I've ever felt in my life” Today the ATO crew is sitting with a genuine individual and true professional to discuss the “Charlie Brown Effect”. Dallas Major Mark Harris grew up in St Louis and found the love of his life Yvonne before joining the United States Marine Corp as he started his life of service. From 1986-1989 he began his life in law enforcement as an MP for the USMC before he traveled to South Texas to work for the Bexar County Sheriff's Office until 2000. In 2000 he joined the Dallas Police Department and has risen through the ranks up to Police Major and now commands the North Central Patrol Division. Mark has had several events in his life and career that have defined him and also strengthen him as he endured the “Charlie Brown Effect”. Every year at Thanksgiving Charlie would trust Lucy to hold the ball while he kicks it, and every year she would yank the ball away and Charlie would fall flat on his back. Yet Charlie still tries, every year, to kick that ball that Lucy holds. Life can be that way for all of us…..Falling flat on our backs. However getting back up and being persistent is what can define a person and establish growth. Throughout his career Mark never stopped trying to kick that ball and he is now a Major in one of the largest Police Departments in the country. Even as a Commander he never lost his genuine kindness he has possessed his entire life as he always treats his troops with fairness, compassion, and support. You can travel the halls of Dallas PD headquarters and you will be hard pressed to find anyone to say something negative towards Major Mark Harris. Special guest cohost Narcotics Detective Todd “T-Bone” Conway joins us as he is a longtime friend of Major Harris as well having a unique perspective as he was present when Mark was shot while running a Narcotics search warrant in the Pleasant Grove area of Dallas. Critical Incident: On 9/28/2006 at 9711 Pinehurst, Dallas Texas, Dallas Police Narcotics Division were involved in a shooting while they executed a search warrant. During this officer involved shooting Major Harris was hit with gunfire as his teammates returned fire at the barricaded suspect. #policenarcotics #criticalincident #fallenheroes #police #narcotics #narcos #policeresponse

Detectives had few leads in the April 11th, 1976, slaying of 38-year-old Joyce Packey Stein. But they did have a weirdo, the victim's boyfriend Dr. Gary Ferris. Perhaps prematurely satisfied with the alibis of other persons of interest, particularly Joyce's abusive ex-husband Stanley, the Terrell Hills Police and Bexar County Sheriff's Office put on their blinders and pursued Dr. Gary with fervor. But was the man's odd behavior simply come from his inability to cope with his girlfriend's brutal murder by gunshot? Part 3 of 3.If you have any information about the 1976 murder of Lillian Joyce Packey Stein, please contact the Terrell Hills Police Department at (210) 824-1009Special thanks to the Terrell Hills Police Department and Sgt. 38-year-old Joyce Packey Stein was found lying in a pool of blood on April 12th, 1976. As Terrell Hills and San Antonio PDs began investigating the murder scene and collecting interviews alongside the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, Joyce's ex-husband Stanley and boyfriend Dr. Ferris become suspicious to police for their odd actions and behaviors. When a so-called “little black book” is found, it creates problems for Detectives as they pursue many leads and eventually leads to a free for all feast of the imagination for local tabloid-style newspapers – the only kind that seems to have existed in San Antonio at the time. Spurscast: The Spurs Through 10 Games In Spurscast episode 674, Spurscast host Paul Garcia and Pounding the Rock writer Bruno Passos discuss: The Spurs through 10 games The Top-10 and Bottom-10 areas for the Spurs on offense and defense The starters and players off the bench The latest in the Josh Primo legal dispute The Spurs' roster at the moment The Spurs through 10 games Through 10 games, the San Antonio Spurs are a .500 ball club with a 5-5 record. After some early impressive wins against Minnesota, Philadelphia, and Chicago, the Spurs are facing a 3-game losing streak against Toronto, the Los Angeles Clippers, and Denver. The Top-10 and Bottom-10 areas for the Spurs on offense and defense The Spurs have more strengths on offense 10 games into the season compared to the defensive end of the floor. The Spurs are Top-10 in pace, assists, floater makes, 3-point shooting, and wide-open 3-point shooting. Turnovers, the Spurs' offense overall, the Spurs' finishing near the rim, and getting to the free-throw line are areas of concern for the team. On defense, one of the bright spots for the team is not putting their opponents on the free-throw line. In terms of concerns, the Spurs have multiple areas they'll have to work on this season including their overall defense, opponents' offensive rebounding percentage, and opponent shooting inside and outside. The starters and players off the bench The Spurs' starters Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, Jakob Poeltl, Tre Jones, and Jeremy Sochan are discussed in the episode, as well as second-unit players Josh Richardson, Zach Collins, Doug McDermott, Malaki Branham, and Keita Bates-Diop. The latest in the Josh Primo legal dispute On Friday, October 28, the Spurs waived guard, Josh Primo. On Thursday, November 03, former Spurs licensed psychologist Dr. Hillary Cauthen, represented by attorney Tony Buzbee, announced a lawsuit against Primo and the San Antonio Spurs for Primo allegedly indecently exposing himself to Dr. Cauthen nine times in private sessions, and the lawsuit against the Spurs is because they allegedly ignored Dr. Cauthen's complaints when she notified Spurs management. Primo's attorney William J. Briggs II responded to the allegations by saying they were false and misleading. Spurs Sports and Entertainment CEO R.C. Buford issued the following statement Thursday: “We disagree with the accuracy of facts, details, and timeline presented today. While we would like to share more information, we will allow the legal process to play out. Our organization remains committed to upholding the highest standards and will continue to live by our values and culture.” Friday, November 04, the San Antonio Express-News reported the Bexar County Sheriff's Office has opened a preliminary investigation into the allegations. The Spurs' roster at the moment With Primo waived and Blake Wesley suffering a Grade 3 left MCL sprain, the Spurs signed Jordan Hall to a non-guaranteed contract that fully guarantees on January 10, 2023. Hall was recently on a two-way contract with the Spurs during training camp and the preseason.
The move clears a pathway for those people to get a special visa to stay in the country that they otherwise would not have received.
According to the Bexar County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a shooting in Capstone Ridge on the East Side Saturday afternoon. Upon arrival, deputies found 41-year-old Allison Marie Cole in the backyard of the residence deceased, from an apparent gunshot wound to the head. According to Sheriff Salazar, videos from neighbors showed a portion of the violence, leading to an idea of who the suspect is. Once an arrest warrant was issued for the suspect, the SWAT team entered the suspect's residence through the garage. Sheriff Salazar says they released a robot camera into the residence, which showed the suspect dead from an apparent self-inflicted wound in his living room. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leah-gordone/support
