We had Darren Littlejohn on episode 176 two and half years ago to talk about his first book, The 12 Step Buddhist and he's back to talk about his latest work Compassionate Recovery: Mindful Healing for Trauma and Addictions. The importance and need for the work contained in the aforementioned book by my friend Darren cannot be understated. To paraphrase Darren and to attempt to encapsulate his latest work, compassion and mindfulness is in so many ways the direction, it is the journey, it is the result, it is the manifestation, it is the fruition of much of what we're trying to achieve in Recovery. Adverse Childhood Experiences, or ACES, trauma, and addiction cause emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual dysregulation that are very often well outside our window of tolerance. When this occurs, we resort to counterproductive thoughts and behaviors, that turn into patterns, that cause a negative feedback loop of deepening counterproductive behaviors. Addiction then, is on a spectrum and recovery too, is on a spectrum. Because addiction is progressive, so too must be our recovery. We must do the work, by identifying the wounds and applying the medicine so we can heal lest we experience unmanageable restlessness irritability and discontentedness or said another way dysregulation that can threaten emotional, physical, mental, and spiritual wellness and if left to continue to spiral downward can result in the ultimate consequence. The work and the medicine, in this case is self-compassion combined with mindfulness. Accept ourselves, connect with ourselves, be there for ourselves now and all times before this moment. When triggers come up, that threaten to be unmanageable the work is deploying tools and strategies to be there for ourselves with compassion and mindfulness. We can pause and choose to conjure self-compassion and mindfulness. Doing this work changes how we experience and respond to all situations in life in an increasingly manageable way that spirals up and raises our baseline and increasingly enables and strengthens our connection to ourselves, our spirituality and ultimately our connection to others which in a very visceral way is recovery personified. Dr. Fred speaks with Casey Hardison, who proactively describes himself as "a carbon-based bipedal life form committed to the possibility of passion, love, light and unity for all people." Casey is a chemist known for his work and advocacy for the advancement of entheogens (psychedelics). Growing up the son of an alcoholic father, Casey began using alcohol and other drugs at a young age, and after seeking support, became sober for eight years. He then discovered LSD, which led to a profound and revolutionary shift to his view of sobriety, drugs, and life itself. Casey shares the dramatic story of his first experience with LSD and his declaration to enroll in college and study these often misunderstood and underappreciated substances. Dr. Fred's mind-expanding conversation with Casey touches the following areas: How LSD led Casey to the spiritual awakening promised by the 12 Steps Discovering the urgency of stewarding and caring for mother earth and all her relations How Casey ended his self-identification with the "once an addict, always an addict" mindset "Toxic shame" as the real "demon" in Casey's life Are psychedelics produced in a lab profoundly different from "plant medicine"? The distinctions of the Landmark Forum The role of mindset and setting when approaching entheogens Why Casey says the English language contains "semantic spooks" from the past Shifting the context from psychology to ontology and epistemology Taking radical responsibility for the things we think and say to ourselves and each other Casey's arrest in the UK for making LSD, 2C-B, and DMT, and how he became a Constitutional scholar The legal defense that made Casey a "folk hero around the world" Why Casey will be running for President of the United States in 2024 (really!) In episode 2 of Season 2 Rachel speaks with Woman Warrior founder and sexual abuse survivor Halli Jastaran Faulkner. **Trigger Warning for anyone who has, or may know someone who has experienced sexual assault or abuse.** A little about Halli: Halli Faulkner teaches healing yoga workshops for women who have experienced sexual assault and abuse. As a survivor herself, Halli has spent the last seven years studying how to use the tools of movement, breath, and mantra to help herself heal. Her Woman Warrior workshops use these same tools to create a safe space where students tap into their own innate healing power. Halli first learned about yoga in her high school gym class in upstate New York and has been practicing and learning ever since. In 2014, Halli was trained in Kundalini yoga and she continues to be grateful for the people of color who created yoga and have shared this healing practice. In 2017, Halli started creating Woman Warrior workshops for survivors while going deep into her own process of healing from sexual trauma and post-traumatic stress. Halli has also spent some time in the formal academic world – earning her Master’s degree in education from Loyola Marymount University and her law degree from the George Washington University Law School, then working in education policy for over a decade. Halli is honored to have taught Woman Warrior workshops for sexual assault survivors in cities including Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Diego, New York City, Washington, D.C., and Rochester, New York. And she's grateful to spend her down time at home with her beautiful wife and their baby daughter. Welcome to Episode 32 of Catching Your Breath: The Podcast, with Steve Austin! In this episode, we're talking about what shame is, how it can impact your daily life, how to share it, and how to heal it. Keep scrolling for more great shame resources, plus my free workbook! Healing from shame isn’t something you can do overnight. It’s a process that can take months or even years. The good news is that you don’t have to take the journey alone. Many professionals have written insightful guides that can guide you on this journey. Here are a few books you may want to pick up… Self Care for the Wounded Soul: 21 Days of Messy Grace (by Steve Austin, with Kate Pieper, LMFT) If you have ever felt hopeless, if you have ever believed that all the bad things in your life were beyond redemption, if you have ever felt unworthy of being loved or accepted, if you have ever feared what would happen if people found out whatever it is that haunts you - I get it. I have been there, too. Maybe you are recovering from abuse, addiction, or a suicide attempt like me. Maybe you are struggling with anxiety or depression and don’t know why yet. No matter what your starting point is, the tools in this journal will help you begin to answer the question, “Now what?” You’re tired of living this way. You want to change your life, and you don’t know where to begin. I hope this 21-day self-care journal will help you answer that question. It’s time to take ownership of your life, and that begins with good self-care. It’s hard work, but you can do it. No more running, no more hiding, no more masks. No matter what your journey has looked like so far, recovery is possible. I am living proof. Healing the Shame that Binds You by John Bradshaw One book that can be helpful for you’re dealing with shame is Healing the Shame that Binds You. In this book, the author discusses shame, how it develops, and what to do about it. Much of the book has been influenced by the author’s own experience with alcoholism. He shares many of the same concepts found in the 12-step program. So if you’re dealing with an addiction as well as shame, you may find this resource the most helpful. I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn't) by Brene Brown Brene Brown’s book, I Thought It Was Just Me (But It Isn’t) isn’t just about shame. It’s about living authentically and letting go of the need for perfection. She encourages readers to embrace their flaws and imperfections and release their guilt. Although anyone can benefit from reading this book, many of the stories and interviews inside it are related to motherhood. If you’re struggling with being a parent, this can be an eye-opening read. If you want to learn more shame and how it’s affecting you, consider watching Brene Brown’s TED Talk titled Listening to Shame. It’s both educational and inspiring. The Soul of Shame: Retelling the Stories We Believe About Ourselves by Curt Thompson In The Soul of Shame, psychiatrist Curt Thompson, invites you to take a look at how shame is affecting your life. He explores the different ways shame enters your life and how to experience true and lasting freedom. The author is an expert in interpersonal neurobiology, so some people found his book can be a bit academic in parts. He’s also a Christian and much of his content stems from a Christian worldview, so you can expect to encounter some theology in this book as well. Living with Your Heart Wide Open by Steve Flowers and Bob Stahl When you carry shame with you, it’s easy to hold onto negative thoughts. That’s why in Living with Your Heart Wide Open, the authors spend much of the content focusing on mindfulness and self-compassion. Many reviewers loved that the book was good for self-discovery and healing of internal wounds. There’s a heavy influence on meditation and Buddhist principles. The authors discuss common scenarios and recommend healing meditations for them. Reading about how others are affected by shame can be freeing. It’s freeing to realize that you’re not alone in your pain and that healing can be found. It may not be easy but it is a journey you’ll never regret taking. How is shame affecting your life? Immunity Challenges Arise From Negativity And Past TraumaElicia Miller - Immunity & negativity connect in destructive ways. In our culture and most families, we often don't receive the support to process many of our emotions, and so we continue to repress them by distracting and numbing ourselves and through controlling and addictive behaviors. In this Episode, we connect the reality of trauma, negativity, chronic illness and immunity to support a comprehensive healing process. Unprocessed Emotions Also Create Physical/Medical ProblemsElicia tells us how she came to understand that unprocessed emotions cause chronic emotional and physical symptoms, as well as relationship problems. Elicia helps her clients understand their symptoms and triggers as a gift, a lesson for personal development. Her mission is to value all of their emotions as a necessary part of their authentic selves. Healing With IntentionElicia's journey of healing her underlying medical issues with https://www.corebrainjournal.com/2017/03/097-biofilm-candida-brain-fog-fresco/ (systemic Candida) gave her the experience to guide hundreds to freedom from digestive problems and chronic fatigue. With that advanced biomedical understanding, she next found the connections between anxiety, depression, autoimmune disease, eating disorders, codependency, addictions, poor body image, and perfectionism.
