We all have patterns we wish we could break—procrastination, people-pleasing, perfectionism—but what if the real reason we stay stuck isn't what we think? In this episode, we're exploring the quiet, powerful force behind so many of these cycles: shame. Not the kind that shouts, but the kind that whispers just enough to keep us second-guessing ourselves, over-functioning for others, or avoiding things we care about. This conversation is about shining light on the loops that keep us stuck and offering a more compassionate lens to understand them. Instead of pushing through with more pressure or self-blame, what if the key was curiosity, awareness, and a new way of relating to yourself in those hard moments? If you've ever wondered why you keep doing the thing you said you'd stop, this one's for you. Three Key Takeaways Some of our most frustrating habits are actually protective responses we've learned to survive discomfort. Lasting change doesn't come from pressure—it comes from self-awareness and a shift in how we talk to ourselves. You're not doing it wrong. You're learning to recognize what's really going on beneath the surface. Shame doesn't motivate - it paralyzes. It keeps you stuck in the very patterns you want to break. How do we heal a marriage that has been broken by betrayal? Is it even possible to move past the shame and condemnation that can come after choices that harm our closest relationship? There was a time when author and podcaster Jill Savage could not see a road to redemption after her husband, Mark, then a pastor, had an affair and was ready to end their marriage. Through what can only be described as the work of God in Mark's heart, their marriage was healed and they stayed together after betrayal. But, the road to that place was not easy. It was full of heartache and shame that threatened to end their relationship. Mark says it was only when he was able to fully surrender to the Lord that true healing came. Now, the couple coaches others who are walking through a similar pain story and have written several books and resources to help couples whose marriages are at a breaking point. In this episode, Davey talks with Mark and Jill about how to love a spouse when it feels impossible, the incredible power of surrender, and the difference between condemnation vs. conviction. Whether your marriage is on the brink of divorce or you are working through shame over a past sin, this conversation will help you find a way through the emotions that can keep us stuck, hurting our most precious relationships, and into hope and healing. It’s always a privilege to have Dr. Jeffrey Rediger on the show, and this chat sure did not disappoint. Dr. Jeffrey’s a Harvard-trained physician, researcher, and the author of Cured, who has spent decades exploring the extraordinary link between trauma, spontaneous healing from so-called 'incurable' illnesses, and the mind-body connection. We talk about the power of the nervous system, the role of trauma in shaping who we are, and how healing isn’t just about fixing what's broken - it's about rediscovering the parts of ourselves we’ve tucked away. From navigating complex emotions like shame to understanding the layers of consent and the subtle ways we reenact unhealed wounds, this conversation is raw, real, and transformational. He's one of my favourite guests! Whether you're on a personal healing journey or fascinated by the intersection of science and spirituality, this episode will leave you inspired to dig deeper into your own story. He's a dear friend and transformational coach who's inspiring a whole new approach to authenticity, overcoming shame, and embracing true self-empowerment. This isn't just any episode—Zachary joined me on his 35th birthday......a milestone he had long awaited as his "spiritual awakening birthday." The energy, insight, and raw vulnerability in our conversation were off the charts! Zachary's journey, rooted in years of healing and self-discovery, is nothing short of transformative. From navigating and ultimately shedding layers of internalized shame to stepping into his most authentic self, he has risen from rock-bottom moments to a place of profound inner peace and purpose.
This podcast episode delves into the topic of shame and its impact on spiritual and emotional healing. Fr. Michael, Fr. Christopher, and Joe discuss how shame is often a subtle and deeply rooted wound that affects people's ability to experience God's love and delight. They emphasize that shame is not just another wound, but a core wound since the fall of humanity. The hosts explain how shame can prevent individuals from walking confidently in their faith, as it leads to self-rejection, a sense of inadequacy, and a distorted view of one's worth. The discussion also covers how shame can manifest in different ways, such as scrupulosity, striving for perfection, or struggling with vulnerability. Healing from shame, they argue, requires vulnerability—bringing one's wounds to God and others in trusted relationships. They stress the importance of confession, openness, and allowing oneself to experience God's love even in moments of brokenness. Ultimately, they encourage listeners to seek healing by addressing childhood wounds and learning to accept love and forgiveness instead of living under the burden of shame.
This story is a powerful reminder that our healing comes from facing the uncomfortable emotions and beliefs we carry, even when they feel overwhelming. It's through sitting with our pain and giving it space that we find freedom and peace.Download my free Shadow Work and Inner Child Guide to get a printable worksheet that you can use again and again!Upcoming Events for Codependency Alchemy
Alison Armstrong is a sought after teacher, thought leader and the author of the best-selling books „Keys to the Kingdom“ & the „Queen's Code“. For over three decades, she has been teaching and speaking about men, women, human behavior and relationships. Through her seminars, books, online programs and media contributions, she has been giving millions of people access to more fulfilling lives, loving relationships, stronger families and more productive organizations. By now, her philosophy and approach have been referenced and taught by many other authors, speakers, and therapists. Alison's exploration of human behavior and relationships began in 1991 when she decided to study men in an effort to understand how she was, in her words “bringing out the worst in them,” with the hope of learning how to bring out the best. Her success in understanding men naturally led her to study women's behavior as well, making vital connections between the two. As her work evolved over the decades, Alison now illuminates the human characteristics that shape the behavior of both men and women, regardless of gender, age, or upbringing. She distinguishes the common human instincts hat often create conflict in relationships and communication, but also reveals how understanding these instincts can help us thrive in relationships. In my conversation with Alison, we revisited the defining moment in her personal journey when she discovered that she was, quote-unquote, “a frog farmer,”. This realization sparked an immense personal evolution, as she learned to bring out the best in men by recognizing how she was contributing to the difficulties in her personal relationships. From there, we dove deep into how shame manifests itself in men, how they can find their way back to empowerment and forgiveness, and how to normalize their relationship with sexuality. Throughout this exploration, Alison offered powerful insights, emphasizing that the capacity to feel shame is actually evidence of our sense of honor. She introduced a process she calls “Noble Forgiveness” to help men find restoration, providing a lens through which they can see themselves more clearly. I believe that one of the greatest gifts I've received from Alison's work is the release of the residual shame I carried for being a man and the discovery of the beauty within men and masculinity through the incredible ways she speaks about them. My hope is that you receive the same gift Some key themes we explored: Alison's personal journey of discovering how she was bringing out the worst in men The defining moments that helped her reshape her view on men and she ended up bringing out the best in men The difference between "caring" & "loving" for men Men's relationship to shame & how it's created Defining courage & honor as men Healing shame & restoring our sense of wholeness through the process of "noble forgiveness" Normalizing sexuality & redefining it as nourishment And much more... — Connect with Alison Armstrong: Website: https://www.alisonarmstrong.com/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/thealisonarmstrong/?hl=de Listen to "The Queen's Code": https://www.alisonarmstrong.com/products/qc-audiobook.html Join Alison's mentioned course "Extreme Freedom": https://www.alisonarmstrong.com/extreme_freedom/ Connect with Alex Lehmann: Website: https://www.alexlehmann.co/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alexlehmann_/?hl=en Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@HeartofManPodcast/featured Listen to this conversation on Apple Podcasts and leave a review: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/heart-of-man/id1697289478 Email: alexlehmanncoaching@gmail.com Interested in working with me 1:1? In this episode of "Lead with the Enneagram," we dive deep into the world of Enneagram Threes, particularly those with a self-preservation instinct like our guest, Laurel Boylan. We explore how the Enneagram can be applied to family dynamics, especially in a household as diverse as Laurel's, with six different Enneagram types under one roof. I offer practical advice on how to communicate effectively with each type, emphasizing the importance of understanding their core motives and fears.Laurel and I discuss the challenges of overcoming a scarcity mindset, particularly around money, and the shame that can accompany it. I highlight the significance of meeting these fears with compassion rather than trying to eliminate them, and the power of nurturing our inner child's emotions to foster growth and change. We also touch on the concept of flow and how operating at a higher frequency of gratitude and compassion can unblock blessings and create a sense of fulfillment that hard work alone cannot achieve.Connect with Tracy:Tracy's Website http://tracyomalley.com/ Tracy on Instagram https://www.instagram.com/tracy_omalley/ Tracy on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/tracy.omalley Tracy on Twitter https://twitter.com/TracyOMall Tracy on LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/tracy-o-malley/Resources:Attend Tracy's Enneagram Group Workshop https://www.tracyomalley.com/workshop Access Tracy's Enneagram Blueprint https://www.tracyomalley.com/workwithmeUsing Your Stress Number to Eliminate Shame & Self-Sabotage on Lead with the Enneagram EP356 https://open.spotify.com/episode/111YMhtJjtw4sgBsN4fHs7 Book a Power Session with Tracy http://tracyomalley.com/workwithme/Learn More About Tracy's Enneagram Team Dynamics Workshop https://www.tracyomalley.com/workwithme Book a Partner Session with Tracy https://www.tracyomalley.com/workwithmeApply for 1:1 Coaching with Tracy https://www.tracyomalley.com/workwithmeEmail info@tracyomalley.com

Many of us feed our shame with the very food that makes it grow: criticism and cruelty that inspires deeper disconnection and despair. We think that we can control and punish ourselves into perfection, that we can banish our exiled parts into the shadowlands and transcend hurt and vulnerability. And yet, if we take the risk to feed our shame with love, acceptance, and compassion, we will see what's underneath: a young, soft part of ourselves who is here to help us heal. How do we find that love and compassion and heal our shame? This is what we explore in today's episode. Everyone feels shame at one time or another. For some of us, shame is an occasional or even rare experience. It's an awful feeling, but manageable. For others, shame is a state that we are particularly prone to; our shame gets activated quickly and intensely. We might even walk around in a haze of free-floating shame, inhaling it with the air we breathe. In today's episode, Sheryl and Victoria explore shame and some of its shifting forms: shame as a creature of the dark that hides out in our innermost places, that flees when we attempt to bring it into the light. Shame as a voice we hear deep inside, convincing us that we don't deserve love and belonging. Shame as a cloak, shielding us from the vulnerability of exposure and visibility. Join us in this episode to tug at the cloak and take a peek at what's underneath. Today my guest is the fabulous host of The Chasing Heroine Podcast. I just wanna say, buckle up, because you are in for a wild ride. When you get two ADHD women together who are super passionate about Game of Thrones, telling stories and recovery, you get a wild episode! I loved this episode because Jeannine is so transparent, vulnerable, and honest about her struggles with her 15 year addiction. She isn't afraid to tell it like it was or share the wisdom of lessons learned in recovery. She is a living miracle of transformation and I can't wait for you to meet her! But before we jump in, I would like to share a quote that has really been working on my soul as of late. The quote is from Peter Crone who said ”Life will bring you people and circumstances to reveal where you are not free.” I heard it right when I was feeling super triggered by someone very close to me who is suffering. I immediately recognized it as very old pain from my childhood when I watched my sister struggle with mental illness. In my young mind, I thought it was my job to save her, but I always felt like I failed her which made me feel horrible about myself. I remember what a hopeless and powerless feeling it was. So to have been triggered in my current circumstance, it absolutely showed me where I'm not free. What I am reminded of is the idea that I can take a moment to acknowledge my feelings, validate them and to let go of what's not mine. Other people's feelings are not my responsibility, especially when they don't want my help. Freedom comes when I can process through the cycle and return to peace. That's how I regain my freedom from obsession. So if you have challenging people or circumstances in your life, I hope this will help you to let go of what's not yours so you can be happy, joyous and free. That's it from me, please enjoy this episode with Jeannine. Having a healthy sense of self-worth means balancing both external and internal validation. In part 2 of the two-part series, we are focusing on internal validation, the skill of fuelling your self-worth from within you, rather than seeking it through external sources. Developing your sense of worthiness from within you is fundamental to living authentically as you become less attached to the opinions of others, and more focused on living in integrity with your personal core values. This episode covers topics such as: What gets in the way of feeling internally validated? How exactly do you do it? What does your self-worth come from? What makes you feel valued? Whitney Durmick is author of Half Wild: A prayer for a generation of roaming malcontents. The book takes an uncompromising look at her self-destructive behavior as she lovingly untangles herself from the throes of anxiety, addiction and loneliness. Using excerpts from the book, Whitney and I unpack the emotional disconnect that has haunted her since childhood (me too!). Moving around a lot, Whitney became very adaptable--able to fit in wherever she was. But that skill left her feeling untethered as she molded her personality into the most-liked version. Little girls are not taught how to interpret the shame that occurs naturally in our developing bodies. So we grow up assuming that uncomfortable emotions mean something is wrong with us. Do you ever feel ashamed? Many people find it among their most physical emotions, resulting in a big knot of tension or a hot flush that washes over their whole body. But what is shame, and where does it come from? I recently read a LOT of academic papers and books, and also popular books about shame, and the most helpful resource I found among all of the ones I read was written by my guest today, A.J. Bond. A.J. is a wrier and a filmmaker who experienced a shame-related breakthrough in his own therapy several years ago, and who subsequently became certified as a Healing Shame Practitioner through the Center for Healing Shame in Berkeley. We discuss, among other things: The origins of shame all the way back in our childhoods What kinds of shame really are helpful in our lives How to heal from toxic shame so we don't pass it on to our own children AJ's book: Discomfortable: What is shame and how can we break its hold? As you're listening to this episode you may well hear the connections between the things you feel ashamed of and your triggered responses to your child's behavior. That's not a coincidence! When we were little we used to advocate for our needs as well (which is what our child is doing), and we were shamed by our parents or caregivers for doing it. And now when our child does that same thing, all those old shame reactions - which had seemed like they were under control! - come raging right back up to the surface. Want to go beyond keeping a lid on your triggers to actually healing, and learning new tools to parent in line with your values even in the difficult moments? Taming Your Triggers will help!
