Ep. 102: When Mike and Bob Bryan retired from professional tennis in 2020, they held 118 doubles titles and 16 grand slam doubles championships. They spent 439 weeks ranked #1 in the world, which doubled the streak of any other duo. And while singles tennis tends to capture the popular imagination more than doubles, the brothers' infectious energy on the court earned them the ATP Tour "fan favorites" for 13 consecutive years. These charismatic geniuses of the court valued their relationship more than winning, offering a fitting lesson for any leader who knows that how you react to your teammates when you lose can determine how well you improve to win the next time. Hello everyone, welcome to The Coach Steve Clark PhD Show where the aim is to encourage, inspire and equip coaches, players and parents who in turn inspire and equip others to promote tennis, foster sportsmanship, and develop greater players and people. So thanks for joining me and I hope you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the conversation. I’d like to thank Wayne Bryan for the intro and Mike ’n Bob Bryan for the music. A special thanks to all they do for tennis through the Bryan Bro foundation and more. Today I have the pleasure of reconnecting with a coaching colleague and friend I have not gotten to chat with in years but have seen him go from successful college coach to tour coach extraordinaire. Brad Stine. We are going to chat about junior-college-and pro tennis, parents of players, coaching at various levels, getting in an inside look at the best. And if you want to improve you should model the best, so today is a great opportunity to listen and learn. In 1991, after leaving college coaching, Brad coached Jim Courier to a #1 ATP ranking, 2 French and Australian Open titles and 4 Slam finals. He went on to coach other top players like Top 10 Medvedev, Top 5 Kevin Anderson, and numerous others and currently coaches Tommy Paul to new heights including a top 100 for the first time in his career, 3rd rd at the 2020 Australian Open with a 5 set win over Demitrov and a quarters appearance in Acapulco with a win over Zverev.

The Coach Steve Clark PhD Show with Allon Khakshouri Hello everyone, welcome to The Coach Steve Clark PhD Show where the aim is to encourage, inspire and equip coaches, players and parents who in turn inspire and equip others to promote tennis, foster sportsmanship, and develop greater players and people. So thanks for joining me and I hope you can just sit back, relax and enjoy the conversation. My guest today is Allon Khakshouri, with whom I discuss the mental side of tennis particularly gleaning from his background as an agent of professional tennis players, three of them world #1’s including Novak Djokovic and Marat Safin. Allon is a current member of the ATP council, has written a helpful The Ultimate guide to High Performance and his insights are not just for tennis but business etc. We will be discussing what makes a mentally tough tennis player, how to become a tough competitor (what shapes our practice and how to play like we practice better), what do do after painful losses, how to balance the passion and drive to win and the ability to “not care” so much about the outcome, etc. All these and more are seen from the perspective of what separates great players from good players at the every day level and what separates the better even among great players. “I’m going to look forward to just sharing these moments with my family. I told Micaela the plans for retirement—she actually was crying and she was like, 'You can still go back, if you’re retired you can still come back and play, right?' I'm like, yeah, but it’s pretty final." On Wednesday, Bob and Mike Bryan announced that the 2020 season will be their final year on tour. They broke the news on Tennis Channel and sat down with the TENNIS.com Podcast's Nina Pantic and guest co-host TENNIS.com Senior Content Editor Matt Fitzgerald (Irina Falconi is playing the 125K Series in Houston). The twins dropped some more breaking news on the show: Bob Bryan is actually the older twin. For their entire lives, they thought Mike was older by a few minutes, but a close inspection of Mike's birth certificate tells otherwise. "It said 'twin', but it said 'second,'' Mike said. "So for these 41 years, I've thought I'm the oldest twin, and we told everyone I'm two minutes older than Bob: Bob's actually, officially, the older brother." They discuss the plans for their final year on tour, the future of the Bryan Bros Band, which might have to include a rerelease of "Autograph", and how life will change when Mike's baby boy arrives in April. His big brother already has three young children (Micaela, Bob Jr. and Richie). The Bryans played their first ATP match together at the 1995 US Open, and 25 years later, the 2020 US Open will be their final tournament. They have won 118 titles together, including 16 Grand Slams. When Bob needed hip replacement surgery last season, Mike teamed with Jack Sock and won two more majors, putting him at 18. Watch TENNIS.com Podcast episodes on Youtube and Facebook. This week’s Tennis Podcast starts by addressing the elephant in the room: last week’s prediction that Roger Federer might not even be on the list to win the title in Miami. Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Grad Matt discuss how Federer discovered his best form, the way he dismantled a legion of big servers en route to lifting the trophy, and how he will approach the clay court swing. Elsewhere in the men’s draw, breakthroughs for Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov got everyone talking. But did Shapovalov approach his match against Federer in the wrong way? And are we beginning to find out what makes Auger-Aliassime so special? In the women’s draw, what’s changed to allow Ash Barty to produce her best tennis on the big stage for the first time? And will she go on to win Grand Slams? Finally, what might Andy Murray have felt while watching Bob Bryan win the doubles title just months after hip surgery? The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly throughout the year and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments, thanks to our Kickstarter backers, and in association with Telegraph Sport. Dan Evans didn’t beat Roger Federer, but he pushed him hard, and did himself proud. That’s the view of David Law, Catherine Whitaker and Grad Matt on The Tennis Podcast at the end of day three at the 2019 Australian Open. How did Evans cause Federer problems? Should he have won the opening set? And how confident should we be that Evans has got his career back on track and won’t have another lapse?Elsewhere, the biggest shock of the tournament so far saw Kevin Anderson lose to Frances Tiafoe. How much was Anderson’s injury a factor? And why does this feel like a significant step forward for Tiafoe?Anderson’s loss opens up the draw for Grigor Dimitrov. How did he look today against Pablo Cuevas? In the night session, David’s man-of-the-tournament Roberto Bautista Agut won a second straight five-setter, this time against John Millman. How does he keep doing it? There was better news for home fans when Alex de Minaur held his nerve to win in five. But is he showing signs of fatigue? There’s also discussion about Bob Bryan’s insight into Andy Murray’s hip injury and surgery, news of David (Thomas Fabbiano) beating Goliath (Reilly Opelka - 67 aces and all), and word on Aryna Sabalenka’s victory over Katie Boulter. The Tennis Podcast will be produced daily throughout the Australian Open (and at all the Slams) after our Kickstarter was funded by our listeners. Today I will be talking with Paul Goldstein, Stanford’s Taube Family Director of Men’s Tennis. Like most players that play for and represent Stanford, Paul had a stellar career at from the juniors through college and into the professional ranks. As a junior he was Top 10 in the World, was the first USTA junior in history to win 3 consecutive national championships in 14,16, and 18s. As a collegian (at Stanford 1994-1998) he Lead the Cardinal to 104-6 record, was the 1st player in NCAA history to start on 4 consecutive NCAA Championship teams. He was a 4-time All American, 2-time Aurthur Ashe JR Sportsmanship, recipient of the Rafael Osuna Sportsmanship award, and inducted into the ITA Collegiate Tennis Hall of fame 2013. In the professional ranks, Paul had an ATP high of 58 singles and 40 doubles with a US Open doubles semifinal appearance in 2005. He had wins over Novak Djokovic, James Blake, Lleyton Hewitt and Patrick Rafter. At the time, he was the highest ranked player with a college degree. Brandon Coupe is the James and Martha Poppy Associate Head Coach of Men’s Tennis. He played for San Jose State University from 1990-94 where he held the school record for most wins in singles and doubles. Unfortunately one of those wins kept one of my players out of the NCAA’s and while fortunately catapulting Brandon into the NCAA’s and his subsequent professional playing stint (this is always a good story we tell the campers when we do camps together). He was an All American, Arthur Ash Sportsmanship Award recipient as well as a recipient of the Rafael Osuna Senior Player of the year and National Van Nostrum Most Improved Player Award. He was a semifinalist at the 1994 NCAA indoor championships. On the professional tour, Brandon played in 14 Grand Slam events, with a high of the 2002 US Open quarterfinals in doubles. He had the pleasure of playing against the likes of Federer, Roddick, Black, Agassi, Hewitt, and Becker. His highest individual doubles ranking was 61 and as a team he was 20 ATP. As a collegiate coach he joined Stanford in 2007 and in 2014 was the ITA NW Region Asst Coach of the Year. I know you will enjoy the conversation.
