Ben Rothenberg is one of the most prolific and influential tennis journalists of the last several decades. He covered tennis for the New York Times for over 10 years, has contributed to The Racquet, and has been featured on BBC, CNN, and many other major news networks.I wanted to have Ben on to talk doubles and discuss his new book, Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power & Her Voice. I recently listened to Ben on Craig Shapiro's podcast where he said he thinks “doubles is in a position that's not sustainable.”In this conversation, we discuss:The problems facing the doubles tour including the lack of star power, poor marketing, small fan bases at many tournaments, and more. What the ATP & WTA might do to help doubles. What doubles players need to do to grow their fan base and help the sport. Why the Bryan Brothers were so successful in “marketing” themselves and doubles.Ben also has lots of great stories that he shares with me. I'd encourage tennis fans, anyone involved in professional tennis, and especially ATP and WTA doubles players to listen to this episode. Whether you agree with Ben or not, he has opinions worth listening to as someone who understands our sport so well.In my opinion, many of the ideas should be taken into consideration by both the tours and the players, particularly as the rumors around Saudi Arabia enter the scene.Follow Ben: Twitter | InstagramBen's new book, releasing January 9, 2024: Naomi Osaka: Her Journey to Finding Her Power and Her VoiceBen hosts the No Challenges Remaining PodcastFull shownotes for this episode here: Ben Rothenberg Interview-----**Doubles Strategy Courses** These video courses will help you play smarter doubles and make winning easier.25 Winning Doubles Tactics Video Course: https://the-tennis-tribe.teachable.com/p/25-winning-doubles-tacticsLeague Doubles Training Masterclass Video Course: https://the-tennis-tribe.teachable.com/p/league-doubles-training**Doubles Ebooks** These guides offer proven advice to improve your doubles strategy.25 Winning Doubles Tactics:  https://www.thetennistribe.com/25-winning-doubles-tactics/Return Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/return-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/Serve Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/serve-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/Net Play Strategy for Doubles: https://www.thetennistribe.com/net-play-strategy-for-doubles-ebook/

This week ATP legend Mike Bryan joins Chris Oddo to talk about his passion for biohacking and give us an update on how the Bryan Brothers are feeling ahead of the U.S. Open Series. We talk about Mike's evolution as an athlete and how biohacking now plays a key role in his ability to keep playing elite tennis at the age of 41. We talk about theraguns and Oura Rings (full disclosure: host had to look these up after the show!). Mike talks about his brother Bob's recovery from surgery and how he is beginning to embrace some of the concepts that Mike has been following for over a decade. Mike talks about that special cup of Bulletproof coffee that he likes to take on court with him for matches and how his fitness has benefited immensely from altering the ratio of court time to fitness time. We also chat about what it means to be back on tour after Bob's career-threating surgery and, of course, what the goals are moving forward, both for this season and beyond. Here are some of Mike's quotes: On the Bryan Brothers return to relevance in 2019: “We’re trying to ring out every last drop of potential out of these bodies." “We feel like we still have something to prove out there. We still feel like we’re in the conversation to win some of these big tournaments—we can compete and beat all the teams out there.” “We had no expectations coming into the year, now we’re expecting to win all these tournament that we enter, and we’re disappointed if we don’t.” On Mike's dedication to fitness and how it's a full-time job: “I’m sitting here in the living room, I have my two theraguns, I have my roller here, I have my roller stick, I have massage balls, I have a whole roomful of stuff.” “I’ll probably be biohacking my body until the day I die.” “I went gluten-free back in 2004, when it was unheard of. I’d go to restaurants and I’d ask ‘can I get this gluten-free’ and they wouldn’t even know what I was talking about.” “Every year I’ve felt a little bit better than the year before and it feels like I figured out something that I can hack.” On the future of the Bryan Brothers: “Once we don’t have smiles on our face and it becomes work, I don’t think we’re going to suit up and take the court.” “We don’t know if we’re going to play another Wimbledon or a US Open, so we’re walking into these places kind of wide-eyed and soaking it in a little bit more.” Thanks to Mike for joining and thanks to Bulletproof for helping us connect! This week’s Tennis Podcast starts by addressing the elephant in the room: last week’s prediction that Roger Federer might not even be on the list to win the title in Miami. Catherine Whitaker, David Law and Grad Matt discuss how Federer discovered his best form, the way he dismantled a legion of big servers en route to lifting the trophy, and how he will approach the clay court swing. Elsewhere in the men’s draw, breakthroughs for Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denis Shapovalov got everyone talking. But did Shapovalov approach his match against Federer in the wrong way? And are we beginning to find out what makes Auger-Aliassime so special? In the women’s draw, what’s changed to allow Ash Barty to produce her best tennis on the big stage for the first time? And will she go on to win Grand Slams? Finally, what might Andy Murray have felt while watching Bob Bryan win the doubles title just months after hip surgery? The Tennis Podcast is produced weekly throughout the year and daily at the Grand Slam tournaments, thanks to our Kickstarter backers, and in association with Telegraph Sport.
